Morning Tailgate: April 20

Posted by Taylor Price on April 20, 2012 – 10:06 AM

What a day. The 49ers broke ground on a new football stadium in Santa Clara, giving California its first pro football groundbreaking ceremony in over 50 years.

CEO Jed York, head coach Jim Harbaugh, Patrick Willis, Vernon Davis, Alex Smith, Joe Staley and several of the team’s former players were on hand to witness one of the most memorable days in the franchise’s proud history.

It was also a significant day for the city of Santa Clara, who will welcome the team into town to kickoff the 2014 season.

More details on the stadium’s design, latest NFL Draft topics and additional groundbreaking headlines can be found after the jump.

Before reading up on the stadium groundbreaking, take a look at the current state of the stadium site in Santa Clara thanks to the New Santa Clara Stadium’s website’s live look-in camera.

If you were unable to watch the live 49ers.com groundbreaking feed, the folks at NinersNation.com transcribed the entire ceremony.

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee previews some of the stadium minutiae, like the team’s goals for the stadium roof. Barrows writes, “The roof will be the first of its kind in the NFL, and CEO Jed York wants it to be the 49ers’ version of the Green Monster at Boston’s Fenway Park.”

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com shares comments from York who confirmed the 49ers will make a bid to host Super Bowls 50 and 51 in Santa Clara.

Can Inman of The San Jose Mercury News shares memorable anecdotes from the groundbreaking ceremony which had a heavy turnout of current and former 49ers.

ESPN The Magazine’s Seth Wickersham offers an insightful feature story on the four Stanford players (recruited by Jim Harbaugh) who could be potential first-round draft picks.

West Bunting of NationalFootballPost.com continues his week-long mock draft with his third-round offering. Bunting has the 49ers taking Utah State Robert Turbin with the No. 92 overall selection.

A New Santa Clara Stadium replica cake was certainly a sweet ending to a memorable day in 49ers history.

I am hoping for a beast wide out in round 1 and a safety in round 2 to supplant slow as a turtle reggie smith,,and that corner from montana state,,cant recall his name but at 6’2 230 he reminds alot of people of ronnie lott when he came out,,lott was a corner at first but moved to safety to lay down the WHOO HITS,,regardless of coach harbaugh and trent baalke draft,,,even if I dont agree with any of the picks they make I will support the decision to draft them for I believe in harbaugh,,,,WHO’S GOT IT BETTER THAN US??????? LET ME HEAR YA NINER FANS

also, I would like to see boise state RB doug martin in a 49ers uniform,,gore is nearing the end as he has been ran into the ground the last 7 years,,hunter is a good change of pace back,,jacobs is a one year band aid,,and dixon cant control his emotions enough to crack the line up,,doug martin of boise state is a between the tackles runner with great hands out of the back field,,I have seen a bunch of games of this kid and he runs like jones-drew and catches the ball like roger craig,,man I cant wait for us to be on the clock,,,WITH THE 30TH PICK IN THE 1ST ROUND OF THE 2012 NFL DRAFT, THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS SELECT,,,,,

lol gor has been run into the ground over the past seven years …imagine that same time that alex has been here ….sorry gore you had to pay the price along with the yorks for alex and his underACHIEVING WAYS

  14. By the fanster on Apr 20, 2012 | Reply

yea gore got pounded into the ground due to alex’s inability to have a coaching staff with the ability to develop a quarterback,,c’mon 11 years,,even you have to admit that alex didnt have a coach who could properly teach a young quarterback anything before harbaugh got here,,look what harbaugh got out of alex this past season,,nolan and singletary didnt have any kind of consistency from the QB spot no matter who was throwing the football,,that alone should clue you in as to their inability to develop and teach a young quarterback,,,

just watched the 49ers draft preview show on comcast sportsnet bayarea,,the local concensus seems to think we will draft a DT in the 1st round to bolster our DT spot in our mighty 3-4 base defense,,thats coming from the local reporter who covers the 49ers for the bay area,,,you know the one reporter who is always in the locker room and in the way,,dontari poe is the guy most 49ers front office staff seem to think baalke and harbaugh will take in the 1st round,,,wow that really goes against what dave g and myself and many others think we will do,,,will it be stephen hill from GT,,or will it be coby fleener from stanford,,,will it be konz,, the guard form wisconsin,,this is what makes the draft so much fun for me,,,the months long speculation and research coming to fruition,,,thursday cant get here soon enough,,, GO 49ERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. By the fanster on Apr 21, 2012 | Reply

Its also been floating around that the 49ers will draft kellen moore the QB from boise state if he is still available in the late rounds like 5 or 6,,very interesting,,,harbaugh is for sure looking to increase the competion at the QB spot,,,

  36. By the fanster on Apr 21, 2012 | Reply

remember, this team doesnt have an outstanding need for starters,,,it has a demanding need for depth,,with the loss of reggie smith I think safety is a spot we need to address early in the draft like with our 2nd pick

wow ok 1st off i said if we pick up the TE @30 then trade VD for a high 2nd rounder to get either a good CB,or O-lineguy or receiver or what ever at a high 2nd round …..read entire post if you want to bash it ….2nd the schedule is 4 times harder this year …..if we go 10-6 ill be happy …as for playoffs…PLAYOFFS….PLAYOFFS….sorry had to do it ….as for the playoffs though all depends on offense again who ever is at QB needs to a leader and get the offense together and making plays ….of wich alex did not last year and i can prove it ………..WE LOST …..there is your proof …….with al the QB’s comin in it does not look good for alex we shall see how the preseason goes to get real look ….since alex thinks he is so good and turned down our offer …only to have no where to go ….maybe he will realize that he has to throw more than checkdowns all day long to start for this team ……….have fun and stay safe this weekend ……….

I honestly think Jeromy is completely deranged! What is wrong with this person? He is emotionally unstable based on all the past & current blogs I have read with his comments…seriously. Not everyone has to like or even appreciate a players talent or lack of talent BUT to be filled with continuous hatred & venom in the manner you do causes me to want to seriously call the cops to investigate your comings & goings. You a freaking lunatic! And you are obsessive & lacking being able to talk about anything else! 11 Years is just bias and seems to dellusionally think he is more observant than everyone else BUT you Jeromy seriously has emotional & psychological problems…seriously.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Alex, so I really want to see him play again this year. If he actually does better than last year, and say throws 3+ 300 yard games, I will defintely be impressed. But otherwise, I would at some point like to see us draft another QB, as we’re not sure that Colin is still the #2 guy.

  49. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Apr 22, 2012 | Reply

you say i spit venom that is your opinion yet you refuse to try and counter obvious flaws in alex with ……well steve young had to wait 7 years and he was better than montana ………..cant even believe you would tarnish the great montana like that but hey yeah im the one spitting venom on a 7 year bust and you are spitting at a hall of famer ……see the point …..

  50. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Apr 22, 2012 | Reply

and yes walker is a better overall TE than vernon …vernon relies on god given talent wich he uses rarely and walker has had to bust his butt to get how good he is and he is good and should start …..so yes if we can get fleener and trade vernon for a really good pick than i say it might be good now will they do that no ….but i would think that walker will leave and be better than vernon on another team ….that is no good for us to let a guy go who is better than our starter ……right
