49 in 49: Best of the Rest

Posted by Taylor Price on April 16, 2012 – 3:41 PM

The best players from non-BCS schools, or as we like to call them, “The Best of the Rest” will be profiled this week on 49ers.com as we conclude our “49 in 49” pre-draft series.

Just because you didn’t perform in one of the nation’s power conferences doesn’t mean you won’t be drafted. The 49ers have a long history of finding talented players from non-BCS programs. Does the name Jerry Rice ring a bell? The 49ers snatched the Hall of Fame wide receiver in the 1985 draft from little-known Mississippi Valley State. It’s safe to say that pick worked out brilliantly for the 49ers.

In recent memory, the 49ers have not shied away from selecting non-BCS players either. Last year alone, six of the team’s 10 draft picks were from such schools.

Currently, 21 players have non-BCS ties on the team’s current roster. Judging by past drafts under general manager Trent Baalke, the 49ers won’t hesitate from adding a small-school, or non-BCS player.

Which non-BCS prospect would you like to see with the 49ers in2012?

Leave your thoughts in the comment section below.

Pick up S Duke Ihenacho. He’s a SJSU product, big fan of the 49ers, and a local favorite. He also wowed scouts at the SJSU pro-day, where he improved some of his physical tests from the Combine

I like Justin Bethel from Presbyterian College. He is a sleeper DB. Looks like a great catch for Special Teams!

Kellen Moore is a gem from the “Gem State” Boise State Broncos and should be grabbed if possible not only for his QB prowess but his offensive coaching mind. The winningest QB in FBS history would make an invaluable addition to the club… possibly even contend with Smith for the starting job in a season or 2. Think about it long and hard Niners… but on draft day dont think too long… Moore is a lock in my book…. Go get him!

EASY, pure and simple: Kellen Moore. The guy has mad skills and is a genius, if he last that long. I have a feeling he’ll be drafted alot higher than most think.

I’d love to see the Niners draft Kellen Moore! He’d be a great backup for Alex and you can definitely build an offense around him. He takes care of things!

I’d love to see either Robert Turbin or Bobby Wagner drafted by my Niners. Wagner is an awesome linebacker that has starter written all over him.

the 49ers should trade there first round pick this year then they will have enough picks to trade up and draft Barkley from USC in next years draft and finally have that franchise quarterback that we all have been waiting for.

Kellen Moore would be a great addition. Some time in the NFL to get that arm strengh down he could have a brilliant career in the NFL. He already has the instincts just need to get the arm strengh.

I’d love to see Kellan and Rival Kap battle it out for second string. Man if you could put Kellens Football brain in CK what a player that would be.

Ladies and gentlemen; we’re talking high speed accessories here. Seems that a balance of nuts & bolts is needed~ O line and D line depth. Can’t be denied though it would appear this years squad is awesome! Who’s got it better than US? NOBODY!

Kellen Moore baby! He would be the greatest back up qb ever, maybe even be a starter someday. Not fast enough, not big enough, arm not strong enough; ever heard of Joe Montana?

There are a lot of gems out there, but we need to be focusing on needs that will put us over the top, like the best OG available with our #1 and follow it up with a quality WR, because I do not believe our current crop will surfice.

Take a look at Miles Burris OLB . He is well worth a 6th round pick, but could go sooner.

  31. By jrparker on Apr 18, 2012 | Reply

Another late round gem could be RB Michael Smith out of Utah State.

Boise State gets a lot of love here, but I haven’t seen anyone mention my favorite:

    Billy Winn, DL, Boise State
