Morning Tailgate: April 5

Posted by Taylor Price on April 5, 2012 – 9:41 AM

The NFL regular season feels like its right around the corner now that the league released the 2012 preseason schedule for all 32 clubs. Oh, and mock drafts, those are coming out fast and furiously with the NFL Draft just three weeks away.

As for the preseason, the 49ers will face the Denver Broncos on the road in the important third preseason game, viewed by many to be a team’s true dress rehearsal for the regular season. The game will also be televised nationally on Aug. 26 on FOX.

San Francisco opens up the preseason at home against the Minnesota Vikings and then travels to face the Houston Texans and Broncos, before finishing the preseason at home against the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers and 49ers will meet in the preseason for a 26th consecutive season.

More analysis on the preseason schedule release, a few of those mock draft offerings and highlights from Patrick Willis’ day at ESPN can be found after the jump.

ESPN.com NFC West blogger Mike Sando highlights the noticeable preseason matchups, which includes a Week 3 meeting between the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins.

Don Banks of SI.com shares his fourth mock draft of the 2012 offseason. In his latest offering, Banks has the 49ers taking Stanford tight end Coby Fleener, who previously played under head coach Jim Harbaugh.

According to Sando, ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper has the 49ers taking Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill in his fourth mock of the offseason. Kiper believes “Hill is the biggest home-run threat in the draft.”

Patrick Willis remains in contention for the 2013 EA Madden video game cover and let the world know that he’s open to gracing the cover. In comments Willis made on ESPN’s SportsCenter (transcribed by Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News), Willis believes he has what it takes to be the first defensive player to be featured by himself on the Madden cover since Ray Lewis. Vote for Willis by clicking here.

Lastly, 49ers.com spoke with players who are getting a head start on offseason workouts by training on their own at team headquarters.

I guess the world will get a look into Peyton’s neck pains when we head out to Denver. What a better test for him than to face the top ranked defense and a front seven as fierce as ours. Think Its just a coincidence? Doubt it. I think its more likely he calls into work sick that day.

  2. By DYENNY on Apr 5, 2012 | Reply

THESE MOCK DRAFTS ARE FUNNY . WE DONT NEED A TIGHT END AND HILL FROM GEORGIA TECH. IS TOO SOFT. RATHER HAVE ALSHON JEFFREY IF WE R GONNA DRAFT A RECEIVER. WE NEED LINEMEN ON DEF . OR OFF U CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY. EVEN WHEN THE SAINTS TRIED TOO CHEAP SHOT US ALL DAY WE SENT THEM HOME I THINK ITS FUNNY. AND PAYTON MANNING ENOUGH ABOUT HIM HE WASNT WINNING IN PLAYOFFS WHEN HE WAS HEALTHY. BRONCOS WANT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS REMEMBER I SAID IT . BRONCOS WONT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS

  3. By marcos g on Apr 5, 2012 | Reply

EXACTLY WHAT I SAID,REMEMBER HE LOST THE LAST SUPER BOWL HE WENT TO, HES NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING FOR THE BRONCOS. MAYBE A BETTER RECORD THAN LAST YEAR, THATS ALL! IM TIERED OF HEARING THATT THE BRONCOS GOT AN ELITE DEFENSE THATS A BUNCH OF CRAP ITS GOING TO TAKE MORE THAN JUST VONN MILLER, AND DUMERVILLE TO BE AN ELITE ‘D’.
OH MANNING WILL SEE AN ELITE ”D” IN THE PRESEASON, HE MIGHT THINK ABOUT SITTING THAT GAME OUT!

  4. By Jason on Apr 5, 2012 | Reply

Coby Fleener will probably be the niners first pick…think hernandez and gronk. after that maybe Sanu and then O-line after that. the defense is straight. I agree with you on the broncos, but if they do make the playoffs brady will win that battle.

People, I understand that these are just comments, but please learn how to spell. And it’s Peyton Manning and Sean Payton. Get it right.

    STOP WITH THE CAP LOCKS!
Ashlon has been mentioned multiple times by scouts as having the biggest bust potential out there. Buyer beware. The reason people are asking for offensive threats and not DL, is that RJF, Tukuafu, and Williams in the developmental phases and doing well

You just have to remember that preseason games are primarily to let new players trying to make the team show the coaches what they can do. Although the starters do play in these games, it is not for more than a quarter or two, so you can’t really judge how well a team will do in the regular season by how they play in preseason games. I’m sure that Payton will play for a few downs against the 49ers, but probably not against their starting defense, at least not for long as, for both teams it is more important to identify the best players who will make the final roster cut, than it will be to win the game.

Coby Fleener in the headline picture. Is that a subliminal hint? I really hope it is.

That kid would compliment Vernon Davis and be able to learn from the games best!

I think this whole gregg williams thing is disgusting,,,the guy should NEVER be allowed to coach again AT ANY LEVEL,,,encouraging GROWN MEN,,,to go out and hurt and possibly end the career of other players is horrific,,THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THIS!!!!!!, and head coach sean peyton cannot say he didnt know anything about this,,,to do so is farce,,,he is responsible for EVERYTHING that goes on with THE ENTIRE TEAM,,,,the penalties are severe and they are just

  11. By dave g. on Apr 5, 2012 | Reply

Jason…you really spell checking and razzing a guy for getting “Peyton” Manning with an “a” instead of an “e”. Really dude?…like we did not know who he meant? There has been a lot worse on these blogs. Where the hell have you been? Its a blog! Get over yourself! And on Coby Fleener, “think Hernandez & Gronk”???? How about think Delanie Walker & Vernon Davis? Do you honestly see us taking a Tight End with our first pick? Really. Please Jason go back to reading your books on you Kindle with spell check and leave the football to the REAL MEN & WOMEN. Where do these people come from? Geeeez

  12. By dave g. on Apr 5, 2012 | Reply

Dyenny..where are you getting WR Stephen Hill is soft? WR Alshon Jeffrey has bust written all over him!

candllestick All that crying the saints fans are doing there going to flood thier own city and they still havent signed Brees to a contract. WILLIAMS wont be able to coach a county rec team .

So let me get this stright everybody thinks that coby fleener is the second coming of clark or jones if we get him .

  16. By Ladybug on Apr 5, 2012 | Reply

Ya…re: Williams….I see Yahoo Sports has dug up all the nasty dirt on this guy again, and how he encouraged the Saints to deliberately try to injure our finest……What a terrible attitude he has. I’m glad he is barred from coaching and I hope it is permanent.

    What sleeze-bag

  17. By candlestick faithful on Apr 5, 2012 | Reply

coby fleener is a dallas clark type of TE with a bit more speed and no blocking skillz at all,,,great hands but to be a TE in the NFL you have got to be able to block,,,how many times did we see delainie walker go in motion and fall back to the fullback posistion to block for gore last season?,,,no,1st pick in the draft has to be an OT,,PERIOD,,,then go from there,,,

  18. By candlestick faithful on Apr 5, 2012 | Reply

there are only 2 maybe 3 WR’s coming out worthy of a 1st round grade,,we have got to OT in the 1st round,,,S/DB in the second,,,wayyy too much talent at the safety posistion in this years draft not to take one with our 2nd pick,,,,dashon is a free agent next year and we cant count on re-signing him and reggie smith is a back-up so me have GOT to take a safety with our 2nd round pick,,,

  19. By dave g. on Apr 5, 2012 | Reply

Jason…I am not saying Fleener has no game. If he is there with our second pick than maybe BUT as our first pick with us having Vernon and Delanie? Look Jason, just cuz you see it in a mock draft somewhere don’t try recycle it as your own thoughts cuz anyone can make a mock. It don’t mean anything. Mocks & Real drafts for that matter is off the mark every year. Realistically with everything we have and need….you really see a TE as the first pick? And don’t try to correct my spellllllliiiing as a come back!

  20. By dave g. on Apr 5, 2012 | Reply

Ladybug…you absolutely right! There is noooo place in the game we love for this crap. Greg Williams should never be allowed back in no matter how many appeals & years go by. I know he is banned indefinately BUT I really hope they stay true to NEVER! He should not be allowed to coach at any level. We try to teach our kids sportmanlike conduct AND this goes against everything!

  21. By rjdniner on Apr 5, 2012 | Reply

williams probably got 20 yrs of coaching and it gone the players that bought into it , there careers will be in the G–PER . The super bowl win will be tainted. And I DONT FEEL SORRY FOR THEM NOT ONE BIT

how can you call Stephen Hill soft that guys is gonna be a great reciever and he is who I want us to take with our 1st pick and after that we could use OL to build depth and then DB to bring more youth into or group who are very good as they stand. Lets remember all 11 starters from last year are returning and Alldon Smith will be a fulltime starter this year. Ahmad Brooks is getting better each year and our front office didnt sign him to a 6 year deal for no reason they saw what I saw and thats a fricking beast whos entire goal is to knock the crab atta whoever is carrying the ball. Lets Go Niners!!!!!!!!!! Superbowl is our destination lets do it.

  26. By candlestick faithful on Apr 6, 2012 | Reply

those of you clammering for a WR in the 1st round,,,why do you think we spent the offseason signing WR’s?,,,so we can grab one of these kik butt O-linemen coming out this year in the 1st round,,pay more attention to what the team is doing and not what you wish for,,,we are stout at LB and D-line,,,we need to use the draft to beef up our O -line and our S/DB spots,,,look at the roster and be more realistic about what we really need

  27. By dave g. on Apr 6, 2012 | Reply

Candlestick Faithful… Lets really look at who is really “paying attention” son! Lets break this down. We have Manningham in place of Josh Morgan AND we have Moss in place of what Braylon Edwards should have been last year. How did that work out for us? You act like we are sooo loaded on Wide Outs its coming out of our ears when in reality we where we should have been last year. One got hurt and one never panned out. Now we are hoping Manningham stays healthy. Now with Moss, this is the part we “NEED YOU TO PAY ATTENTION”…cuz we have. Moss is NOT signed to a guarantee. If he doesnt make the starting roster…he does NOT get paid…yeah its in his contract! Why do you think they did that AND have you listened to Hargaughs comment about Moss being a risk? And how old is he? Do you really think we have that locked in for a few years? Common dude? Do you really think the door is slammed on needing a WR for now & the future? Don’t get me wrong, I want Moss & Manningham to do GREAT! But are you fully comfortable with not having a plan if Moss don’t pan out like Edwards did last year?????? Have you seen enough from Moss the last 2-3 years to feel totally good about that? Common Amatuer…think before you try to sound like YOU HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS!

  28. By dave g. on Apr 6, 2012 | Reply

Candlestick Faithful..before you try to school someone on not paying attention, I suggest you do your research cuz you really show the lack of knowledge you have. I am not saying we should definately draft a WR, OL or whatever with our 1st pick. A lot of times it has to do with what’s available when our turn comes at pick #30. I don’t want the team to reach for a WR if the good ones have been taken when they can get good value at the 2nd or 3rd pick if the remaining WR’s grade close BUT if we have a great one fall to us at pick #30, DO YOU REALLY THINK ITS OUT OF THE QUESTION TO GRAB ONE???? Seriously?

  29. By dave g. on Apr 6, 2012 | Reply

Candlestick Faithful-If a great OL, DB, DE or WR drops to us we should snatch them. REMEMBER, it all depends on who is still there. You never reach just cuz you need a particular position more than another because if the remaining grades on the players are close you be patience.

  30. By dave g. on Apr 6, 2012 | Reply

Candlestick Faithful- If a players falls to us or is close enough for a trade up WHO THE TEAM FEELS IS GREAT regardless of position there for the taking WE GRAB IT (period). Comprendo muchacha???
