Morning Tailgate: April 4

Posted by Taylor Price on April 4, 2012 – 9:39 AM

In the biggest uniform unveiling in professional sports history, Alex Smith donned the new-look 49ers threads at Wednesday’s NFL uniform launch.

At the event, Smith was all smiles (and not looking as menacing as his Nike photo shoot) when speaking with NFL Network about the changes to the 49ers uniforms. The 49ers quarterback was supportive of the changes and especially pleased with the improvements made to the uniform collar.

Smith also gave an interview with Sirius/XM satellite radio where he discussed his offseason as well as some of San Francisco’s offensive additions in free agency.

Smith’s comments, more fallout from the uniform unveiling and a pair of mock drafts can be found after the jump.

Smith’s radio interview, transcribed by Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News, echoed the quarterback’s comments made to 49ers.com after he signed a three-year contract. Smith told Sirius he felt he was always supposed to be with the 49ers and also said he’s looking forward to throwing to Randy Moss. “To have a guy like Randy Moss line up outside and throw the ball to him, I can’t wait. I can’t wait for it. I’m excited.”

Smith’s presence at the Nike event, along with 30 other NFL representatives, was slightly overshadowed by the uniform changes made by the Seattle Seahawks. Tim Newcomb discussed the NFL-Nike partnership for SI.com, pointing out how the uniforms combine flash and increased function.

Five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis has made it to the EA Madden cover tournament round of eight for the second consectutive year. Willis takes on New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz in the third round of the tournament after previously defeating running backs Matt Forte of the Chicago Bears and Maurice Jones-Drew of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Voting at ESPN’s SportsNation website lasts today until April 11.

Willis joined SportsCenter this morning to discuss his Madden cover candidacy and made it clear that he wants to become the first defensive player to grace the video game cover (solo) since Ray Lewis.

According to Adam Caplan of Sirius/XM Radio, St. Louis Rams free agent offensive lineman Jason Brown will visit the 49ers this weekend.

Safety Reggie Smith has signed with the Carolina Panthers, the team confirmed Wednesday morning.

Lastly, two recently released mock drafts have the 49ers going in completely different directions with the No. 30 overall selction. Wes Bunting of NationalFoootballPost.com believes Stanford tight end Coby Fleener will be San Francisco’s selection; Pat Kirwan of CBSSports.com thinks Clemson defensive end Andrew Branch gets the nod.

wow marcos you don’t know much do you. First Reggie Smith is a great player and hes a backup not even a starter. We have Goldson one of the biggest hitters in the league and Whitner is amazing the two of them are one of the best safety duos in the league. Also we have Spiller and Smith backing them up we are set at safety. We need another young corner and a young DT to grow with our veterans. Come on man think before you blog. Go Niners!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After seeing all of our free agent pick-ups, I am guessing Harbaugh is going to spend our number one pick on an OG, a definite need. If that is the case we might be seeing a trade down take place, because a quality OG can still be picked up around the 45th pick overall and because we could use another 3rd round pick.
