Shockwaves were felt across the NFL landscape this morning.
Sean Payton, head coach of the New Orleans Saints, has been suspended for a full year for his role in the team’s player performance payment scandal. Subsequently, the team will forfeit second-round draft picks in 2012 and 2013. General Manager Mickey Loomis has also been suspended for eight games and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, now with the St. Louis Rams, will be suspended indefinitely. ESPN senior analyst Chris Mortensen believes Williams will be out of football in 2012.
This matters especially to 49ers fans as the team moves up one spot in the second round of the 2012 draft and will face the Saints on the road in 2012 and the Rams twice next season.
Oh, and former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow was reportedly traded to the New York Jets for a fourth-round draft pick. The 49ers will face the Jets on the road in 2012, too.
Quite a busy Wednesday morning to say the least, but there are plenty of 49ers-related headlines to examine after the jump.

Three teams shared the Big East Conference crown in 2011, but it was the West Virginia Mountaineers who represented the conference in a BCS bowl game.
West Virginia did it in great fashion as they defeated the Clemson Tigers soundly in the Discover Orange Bowl by a score of 70-33. However, the conference will seek different representation in the BCS bowl series this upcoming season as the Mountaineers will join the Big-12 Conference in time for the 2012 season.
Things will soon look completely different in the Big East, the latest conference to be featured in our “49 in 49” series.
The conference has added seven schools since December, with Temple being the most recent to join. Temple could take on the schedule of West Virginia, too. However, most of the seven Big East newcomers will join in 2013. Temple, on the other hand, will start conference play in 2012 and will join all sports in 2013.
The 49ers themselves are familiar with Big East players having last selected a player out of the Big East in 2010 when Rutgers tackle Anthony Davis was the team’s choice with the No. 11 overall pick.
Davis has started in all 32 of his career appearances with the 49ers.
In total, the 49ers have four players on its current roster with Big East ties. Besides Davis, All-Pro punter Andy Lee and tight end Nate Byham represent Pitt, while All-Pro kicker David Akers represents Louisville.
Which players from this year’s crop of Big East talent would you like to see in a 49ers uniform next season?

It’s been a frenzied start to the 2012 free agency period.
The 49ers have already signed two players to the team who were out of football in 2011, but look to be primed for breakout returns under NFL Coach of the Year Jim Harbaugh.
A longtime NFL writer, who once covered the 49ers as a beat writer during Bill Walsh’s heyday, believes Harbaugh is best suited to get the most out of Randy Moss and Perrish Cox.
