49ers.com’s pre-draft coverage turns its attention this week to the Atlantic Coast Conference and the top talent hailing from the competitive football league.
Currently, four players on San Francisco’s roster played collegiately in the ACC, most notably tight end Vernon Davis and running back Frank Gore, who starred at Maryland and Miami, respectively.
The 49ers haven’t drafted a player out of the ACC since 2008, but several talented players from the conference could be prime candidates to join the team in 2012.
Top to bottom, ACC conference play was quite competitive last season with the Clemson Tigers edging the Virginia Tech Hokies 38-10 to win the school’s first ACC title in 20 years. The Tigers, however, had their season end on a bitter note as they were defeated soundly in the FedEx Orange Bowl (70-33 by West Virginia). Likewise, Virginia Tech also represented the conference in the BCS Bowl series, but were defeated 23-20 in an overtime loss to the Michigan Wolverines in the All-State Sugar Bowl.
Despite the outcomes both teams suffered to end their respective seasons, both clubs produced some of the top prospects headed to this year’s draft.
We’ll profile seven ACC talents this week on 49ers.com.
But first, which ACC talent would you like to see in a 49ers uniform next season?
