Morning Tailgate: March 23

Posted by Taylor Price on March 23, 2012 – 9:52 AM

Thursday, March 22, 2012, might go down as one of the busiest days in 49ers.com history.

Where do we begin.

First, there was the announcement of former New York Giants wide receiver Mario Manningham signing a two-year contract with the 49ers, complete with a reveal of the top of Manningham’s contract.

Then, we attended the 2012 Stanford Pro Day to see potential No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck perform in front of representatives from every NFL team. Luck even went out of his way to showcase the talents of his teammates who caught passes in his workout.

As soon as 49ers.com returned from Palo Alto, news broke out on two key free agency signings: we first reported wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. signing a one-year contract and later shared the news of quarterback Josh Johnson reuniting with his college coach Jim Harbaugh on a two-year contract.

And don’t forget about the team’s annual Celebrity Winter Fest. We sure didn’t. Scott Kegley filed his first report from Lake Tahoe where the team hopes to raise $1 million dollars at the team’s 12th annual charity event.

All that took place, and we profiled West Virginia linebacker Bruce Irvin in our “49 in 49” series.

Safe to say, it was a busy day.

And yet, there are still more 49ers-related headlines to check out after the jump.

The NFL’s “Greatest Team of All Time” tournament is down to its final eight teams and three 49ers teams (1984, 1988, 1989) are still alive. Vote now and help make it an all 49ers final.

Those 49ers teams coached by Bill Walsh would certainly have been impressed with the performance of Andrew Luck at Stanford’s pro day.  Luck joined NFL Network to discuss his strong workout, and later spoke with CSN Bay Area to sum up his day.

49ers tight end Vernon Davis visited with KNBR this morning to discuss his offseason charity efforts and the return of Alex Smith to the club.

Lastly, perhaps the most interesting news from Thursday came from Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee, who reported that all of the 49ers quarterbacks (minus Scott Tolzien who was out of town) played racquetball with Harbaugh once Johnson visited with the team.

Per fullback Bruce Miller’s Twitter account: Racquetball might be the new offseason training regimen for 49ers players.

Having 4 solid guys that can flat out play is a great problem to have. They will all get the best out of each other, great job Baalke and Harbaugh.

Im more jacked about the resigning of Ted Ginn we need you baby, catching kicks is your game you the best out there and having you in the slot is key for us. Im upset we let Josh Morgan go I have a lot of respect for him and loved what he did before he got hurt last season yet with the addition of Moss and Manningham this group can grow arguably into the best bunch in the league. Know Alex has someone besides Vernon to go deep too. Alex Smith you my boy I have always stood behind you and look forward to seeing you tear it up this season. No hurt feelings it is Peyton Manning you know they had to at least try afterall it is Peyton Manning. I didn’t want it though I hated they even flirted but it is the business of football. Your back thats all theat counts. I love my niners yeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

ugh ok smigh refused to sign with the niners so they went with the best on the board people ///alex was the reason he want signed yet when the niners went after manning or anyone else who could throw down field …..alex’s agent made the niners take him back by leaving nothing left to grab …..vote for alex be his athletic supporter vision him any way you like he refused to play for the niners for said contract then he had no choice and signed the same deal …..now for all the other signings it is apparent that the niners are real serious about making the niners a househod name again ….coach is putting his team together and looks like he will stop at nothing to make us the great team we used to be before the shotty QBing plagued us …siefert would still be here if the QB situation was at all good enough to compete

Wow, a true competition at quarterback. Each one has their own strengths… Now taking bets on who will start week 1, lol.

8 yrs explain the siefert connection since you brought it up .

I feel lke the way the niners handle free agency is smart. They have a value they set for each player and if they can sign them for that they do. Alex wanted to look around the league to see if he could get more money. The Niners wouldn’t pay him more than they thought he was worth. When he couldn’t get more elsewhere he signed with the 49ers.

In the last Siefert year there was trouble at Quarterback….the team was falling apart, and key players were deserting the sinking ship. In the ensuring years, starting with Mariucci, the coaching got worse and worse until finally Harbaugh was courted and stepped in.
Thank God he did. He has started the rebuilding in a spectacular fashion, and you can bet it’s not over yet. The 49ers will once again be a powerhouse…an elite team to be feared. Last year was exciting…..but I am looking forward to a new season with some great talent now on board.

The QB position has changed over and over through the years ….teams all went with the gun or the runner or the accurate guy or the guy who would never quit or the guy who would just plain make it happen …all teams would follow suit this happens every few years and teams get QB’s with a style that the league has hyped up …yet dont work out for those teams because of style differences and lots of times prro fundametals at this stage of the game are the reason why the bust phrase is used ….the 3 year deal for a rookie was just that 3 years and we will see where you stand …at times you saw the big 5 year deal out the gate ….this is a paid performance league that has turned into because the money now is so huge teams say well lets wait 11 years to see what we got….remeber back then freeagency was fround upon and when you signed with a team you were there …wich is where young and montana turned out to be the greatest draft choices for the decade ..yeah young sat behind montana for years because that was the way …now you can be cut mid season and or after 1 season and the team will find someone else …..wich in turn startd the QB controversies and competitions ….i am gald to see that harbaugh is old school and want sot do the right thing and make a QB not only work hard but if he dont cut it hey look there are 3 other guys …he will get the best on the field and believe me we will see a superbowl and keep our tradition of when we go to the bowl we win 5-0 still stands babay

ummm,,seifert had steve young the whole time he was coach so I dont know what QB poroblems you are referring to lady bug,,but policy and clark knew what kind of trouble they would get into later,,,and we as fans knew that we ere mortaging the future to win know,,,that’s why it was us or dallas going to the super bowl in the 90’s

But thank you for putting up with me and helping me understand about what the coaches are looking for…….I love you Niner-Fans…..

LADYBUG YOU GO GIRL :) What iam noticing is that the nfc weast is getting stronger the stronger the better Somebody made the comment if MOSS dosnt get the ball like he want then he start shooting off his mouth in the locker room all i got to say is dont look a gifted horse in the face he ll bite back When i look at QB coming out of colleage there , conference and strenght of schedule . and that the reason i like SCOTT TOLZIN . WIS is no joke when it comes to football , the harder the conferance makes a better QB , coming into the nfl .A nd we all saw that last year . GOTTA GO . IAM FOOTBALL 24 / 7 .

  39. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Mar 25, 2012 | Reply

here we go i say it evrytime i only comment on people who try and tell me that alex is the king …wich obviously he is not …its not hate fools …pay attention his skills are very poor and for some to say he is the best we got …and happy to havehim fall right back to us …is sad really …i like the competition that coach is brewing and yeah i do not think alex will cut it whith a full offseason and the coach haveing guys with better talent than alex and more drive than alex it may be his down fall …but if he does come out to be the guy …then we will see and if he still is doing the checkdown game and has no concept of reads still than i will bring those to light ..EVERY TIME …MAKE NO MISTAKE ….ITS NOT HATE JUST FOOTBALL …and when he plays garbage ball yyyeeeeeeppp i will say something

Here tip bit of information , cant aford to have the big contract on the side lines even though the lesser of the contract is kicking tail , exampl if josh comes in and beat out ALEX then you have the media talking it a snowball effect .We all know the coach is going to put the best one on the field . When JH took over i was really happy for alex , outstanding year . With the addiation of the of those two WR time to put or shut . iam goin to read that web sight later

8yrs: ladybug is right should be 8yrs against. you are truly a joke. do us a favor and leave blog until AS contract is over 3yrs, please. we are going to SB with or with out you.
    go niners

Jeromy…First off who cares what this Theder thinks & second off we don’t care who wins the starting job as long as its the guy who gets us to the SB. The point you continue to miss with all your Alex hating is it would have been stupid not to resign Alex based on what happened last year AND ultimately Jim Harbaugh will make the decision on who he thinks gives us the best chance. Why are you continually scrapping for any morsel, break crumb or atom to prove to us that Alex sucks? You are lame dude. We really don’t care who wins the starting job as long as we WIN THE SB!!!!!! Geeeeez. You and 8 years need to move forward, seriously. Dave G. slapped you silly on some other blogs previously and I would have thought after crying in your blankie you would have gotten over it.

Jeromy..tissue what the hell are you talking about??? You the dumb@ss who keeps whining about Alex. Its over we signed him. Get over it..you say his days are numbered like its what you want. THATS NOT A FAN. I don’t care to research your stupid blog cuz all you care about is tryin in any way to prove that Alex sucks. Where are you getting love from saying it made sense to sign Alex instead of not signing him. It was the logical thing to do, dumb@ss. You would not know about logic CUZ you use emotion like a little girl. You a damn emotional and a drama queen and your arguments continue to be weak. Even if someone out plays him and wins the role than great, they deserved it according to Harbaugh & what is best for the team. The whole point of what you trying to say is we should not have signed Alex this year, AND I am saying that would have been stupid. THATS THE WHOLE POINT!!!!! Man…you are stupid.

  46. By SHIP on Mar 25, 2012 | Reply

Jeromy BTW: We all got a kick on how badly Dave G. slapped you silly on all these blogs. HAAAAAAAHAAAAAAA!

  47. By okcniner on Mar 26, 2012 | Reply

Seriously, why is the conversation always about Alex Smith? Why would you idiots keep dogging him after the progress he made last year? Say what you want but that guy has more heart than 90% of the quarterbacks int he week. Get a life or please go find another team to root against.

  48. By dave g. on Mar 26, 2012 | Reply

OKCNINER & SHIP: You two are absolutely right. These losers 8 Years & Jeromy needs to get a life. All they want to do is use every waking hour trying to prove that we should get rid of Alex. They completely miss the point. Whether you lik ethe guy or not, it would have made ZERO sense to not sign him after helping us get one play away from the SB with only one starting WR. I like Colin K. & Josh Johnson BUT you really don’t know hat you have until they play a string of real NFL games. If one of them ends up outperforming Alex than so be it BUT Alex has proven he can get it done with one starting WR. Now that we reloaded with WR’s, we will see & if he does not than at least we have a solid stable of QBs. Keep in mind though Theder is bias & no one can deny Michael Vick has better pure athletic skills than Brady, Manning, Brees, Rivers & Eli BUT does that mean you woul drather have him over them? Dave…you truly are short sighted in your pure hate for Alex. But whether you like him or not, I just can’t seem to understand how a true 49er fan can possibly ever root against whichever QB starts. It means its all about your ego and quest to want to be right over all other things. That is pathetic!

  49. By rjdniner on Mar 26, 2012 | Reply

THANK GOODNESS WE DONT HAVE THE MESS THEY HAVE IN NEW YORK A (BACK UP) DOING A PRESS CONFERANCE . Cant wait for us to play them that wild cat will not work aginst a well prepare def and beside our all pro line backers will knock him on his a–.

I am in no way a side-taker,,but to say that someone is not a fan of one team or another just because he dis-likes the QB is kinda lame folks,,,I am no big fan of alex smith either,,,but at the present time he IS our starting QB,,so,,,,like it or not I must get behind and support him,,,because as a fan ALL I CARE ABOUT IS WINNING,,,and if that happens with alex,,,great,,,if it happens with kaepernick or tolzien,,,great,,,but if coach harbaugh see’s alex struggling,,,he now has some options at QB to make a switch,,which he didnt have last year,,,if he has to,,,,looking forward to the start of the season,,regardless of who is our starting QB,,,

  54. By dave g. on Mar 26, 2012 | Reply

Candlestick Faithful…what you are saying is exactly what I have been saying. “I don’t care who we win with as long as we win.” But you need to look at the 1,000’s of tired blogs of Jeromy’s & Eight Years just continuously finding any way possible to keep attacking our starting QB. Now you correct on it does not matter who starts BUT you are wrong about commenting about him just disliking. He is not just disliking, you jumping in on the tail end of these blogs without the full history. ALL they have been doing is b1tch, complain, hate and root for him to get sacked or hurt. Yes they have been quoted as saying that. Now DO YOU CALL THAT A FAN????

  55. By dave g. on Mar 26, 2012 | Reply

Jeromy…you did not get your way. We signed him, you lost. If Colin outplays him than it will be because he truly earned it, BUT it would have been stupid going into the season with 2 unproven QB’s regardless of the potential and ride our whole season on it. THAT WAS THE POINT! That would have been an amature knee jerk move just cuz you hate a guy. Its not about loving or hating for me, its about making smart calculating moves. With you your moves are all about hating & letting your emotions guide your decisions. Houston went ALL the way down to their 3rd string QB last season, so its important we are deep and they are all ready. Its about being smart and logical minus the emotions like drama queen Jeromy with his love and kleenex comments. What a dueche.
