Morning Tailgate: March 22

Posted by Taylor Price on March 22, 2012 – 9:20 AM

The field of 32 is set.

Patrick Willis and 31 other stars of the NFL will vie for the 2013 EA Madden video game cover.

Willis made the final eight last year, and this time around he’s a No. 11 seed in the opening round facing No. 6 seed Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte.

Voting information and more 49ers headlines can be found after the jump.

49ers Faithful can vote for Willis from now through March 28 by visiting ESPN.com’s SportsNation page.

The 49ers bolstered their receiving corps on Thursday by signing talented wide receiver Mario Manningham to a two-year contract. Manningham, who spent the first four years of his career with the New York Giants and won a Super Bowl last season, also spoke to 95.7 The Game earlier this morning.

Another one of the team’s prominent figures was in the news quite a bit recently as well (you might have heard). Quarterback Alex Smith signed a three-year deal to remain with the 49ers through 2014 and spoke exclusively with 49ers.com and TV49 afterwards.

Our Wednesday coverage also extended to San Jose State’s pro day, where former 49ers Pro Bowl quarterback Jeff Garcia was one of the noticeable faces in attendance.

For those losing track of the latest in 49ers free agency, Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com has an updated scorecard for the club.

Stanford’s pro day is taking place today and we’ll be there to cover it. Stay tuned to @49ers on Twitter for more updates from Palo Alto throughout the day.

I am really happy to be a 49er fan, we have the best team ever. I just know that we are going to do great this year. I cant wait to see the young talent we wil draft. We have some good veteran players sure to keep our young guys in check and up to par. We are going to be a dynasty again. GO 49ers!!!!!!

dave g. to me the niners ol is not like it was when bob mckittrick was the ol coach it hard to keep that together for 4 yrs because of the dreaded, FA as for a WR either HILL or jeffery . That kid out of GA its Glenn he ll be ok because he play in the SECand we all know about that conferance look at our rooster . niners Glenn is in the top 5 for the draft at Guard

  7. By rjdniner on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

oh no i got 2 neg rating hhaa:)

hello everyone aint it great to be a 49ER . I GUESS I SAY THIS JOKINGLY BUT IVE NEVER SEEN SO MANY 49ER FANS THAT SHOULD BE HAPPY , CALL EACH OTHER NAMES . LOL . WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS MAKE SURE WE DONT SIGHN ANY FORMER SAINTS BECAUSE THEY ARE LIKELY TO BE SUSPENDED LATER FOR BEING INVOLVED IN THE BOUNTY . IT COULD HURT ANY TEAM IN THE MIDDLE OR ANY TIME DURING CONTRACT IF WE SIGN THEM.

  9. By rjw49ers on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

I dont think that I would want willis to be on the new madden that is such a curse and we do not need him to get hurt

Excellent points RJDNINER & DYENNY. No Saints players which I am sure JH and Baalke have figured out and if we are to analyze any positions, offensive line is not a bad area to start because we could improve a lttle there. I never liked the fact that we gave up on Baas who went on to win with the Giants last year but oh well thats over. Lets see theres G- Iupati (GREAT), T – Davis (Good), T – Staley (GREAT), Center- Goodwin (Good), which leaves the other guard. I am thinking the other G will be between Person OR Gilgore which the team has been developing both and it will be a battle. I am sooooooooooooooo happy Chilo Rachel is gone. Man that dude was soft. I think, we should draft WR if Stephen Hill is there…that dude looks like he could be a beast! If not we should go for the best OG/C on the board. Just my thoughts but I am not an expert ; )

yep so would like to see a little more aggressive DT…or DE so we can have more push for our LB’s to create havoc …also we need a good guard who can compliment lupati and we should be able to get a good receiver to build up the offense even more ….not that alex will throw to any but still looking forward several years here when he finally has to retire at 30 with all the millions he got for yes subpar what ever he was doing …..build up the team and the new QB shall prosper right now it is just a guessing game as to how the defenses are going to splatter alex ……thanks to our all probowl kicker and punter we should be able to break some more records and at least be able to bring in a new kicker maybe 3 years down the road

  12. By rjdniner on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

dave g. What happen with that guy from the panthers, schwartzs he didnt play last year due to a hip injury or the guy who play for dallas . DAVIS . Iam realy looking forward to watching Dobbs at dt that is another SEC product . YA that MADDEN is voodo hahaha . HOPFULY HE WONT GET PICK I work out at crossfit so if they need a third string on the line i am ready :)

  13. By scott on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

hey eight year get off alex the 49ers are going to be really good this year and what is going on with the saints the 49ers are the team to beat this year go 49ers.

DAVE G . VERY WELL PUT .It is nice to see people talking real football. i agree with tour picks . hill and jeffreys is great picks and ive seen JEFFERY AT WR AND GILMORE AT CORNER AND INGRAM ALL LIVE AT BALLGAMES IM A SC FAN LIVE CLOSE TO STADIUM. GILMORE IVE WATCHED HIM GET BURNT ALOT. JEFFRERY 2 YEARS OUT HE WILL NEED TO BE DOUBLE TEAMED. NOT TRYING TO BE A HOMER BUT INGRAM CAN PLAY AT LINEBACKER OR END HE IS A BALL HAWK CAN START LIKE ALDON SMITH RIGHT AWAY. GUARD OUT OF STANFORD WOULD BE REALLY NICE HE ALREADY KNOWS SYSTEM . AND IT WOULD BE A GOD SEND IF POE FROM MEMPHIS FELL TO US BUT AT 30 IITS A STREACH.

  15. By kram on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

i think they should wait on o. line in draft and see who gets wavied this summer and pick up someone who fits niners scheme..draft wr from g tech if he’s there then some o line in later rounds like to see them get LT or try for him still think he would fit team seasoned vet, hof guy.. use for third downs and some short yardage plays. move the stcks this year and score in red zone..just think what d will be like if that happens. akers will be rested lol

  16. By Ladybug on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

yup…..I too want to see our O line beefed up a little. They couldn’t hold em good enough last year….and sometimes they just caved. Otherwise, I am really pleased and excited about what I am seeing so far. One day I might mosey over to 49er HQ and watch them , from the sideline , practice . Nothing like watching a team meld and come together as they work out the kinks. Waaa Hoooo go NINERS !

  17. By rjdniner on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

DYENNY Draft peaple say that some red flags on POE, OVER ALL PERFORME when does FA end anybody. HARBOUGH recruited decastro . dyenny i delivered meny house in and around COLUMBIA, SUMTER , ORANGEBURGE . CANT WAITE FOR DRAFT DAY .

  18. By candlestick faithful on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

with ginn re-signed it looks like we will be going after o-line and def. back in the draft,,,and d-line in the late rounds unless we move up and try to pick twice in the 2nd round,,,thats what I would like to see

  19. By dave g. on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

RJDNINER you are right about Demarcus Dobbs on the D.Line…I almost forgot about him. He was a beast in last years preseason games & I really think he is going to come on after working on the practice squad last year. He was very raw.

  20. By rjdniner on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

IF the kide maks the starting roster there going to be alot of happy peaple in SAV GA . Glade to see ginn back in RED AND GOLD AHH YAAAA.

  21. By okcniner on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

Can’t see bringing in a guy like LT when we have Kendall Hunter already

  22. By rjdniner on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

ok now that we have 4 QBS Dose anybody know anything about Johnson ?

  23. By EIGHT YEARS WITH ALEX on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

i believe freeagency is 30 days ….could be wrong but sounds about right …as in bringing in more guys …competition is the best thing for a team ….and even better for a good team like the niners …push everyone to perform even higher and push harder for excelence…..i loike the josh johnson signing ….niners are looking for best leader and they mean business perform or sit ….that makes great teams …not just oh well we have no other so you start ….ginn signing is huge he likes it here and wants to perform at a high level for us ….

  24. By rjdniner on Mar 23, 2012 | Reply

8 yrs congradulations you finly made a comment without talking about a certin some one and thank you for answering my qustion :)

  25. By NINERSS ALL DAYYY on Mar 23, 2012 | Reply

LOVE the GINN signing that gives us the best special teams again…O LINE im sure Kilgore will fill that hole for us…I cant see us drafting an Offensive Lineman in the first round although JH may take the OL or TE from Stanford…We could probably get a stud receiver in the 2nd round maybe even Jeffrey i dont know what his 40 time was but he will prob drop because of it….Id still take him he is built like Calvin Johnson and has Great hands just gotta slim down a lil bit and the speed will come with it…Now our team is set Looking forward to the draft!!!! Does anyone think Wallace is worth the 1st round pick?

  26. By Hermie on Mar 23, 2012 | Reply

Josh Johnson signed by the 9ers…INTERESTING!!!

  27. By rjdniner on Mar 23, 2012 | Reply

I would say no, it a roll of the dice . Trentt gets the big bucks making deceision like that . Alson he better slime down . to get back to Wallace me i realy dont want to give Pitt 2 picks in the 1st rd . Ladybug i really dontt want to hear about you just MOSEYING OVER TO WATCH THEM PRACTICE and iam stuck here on the east coast not right :) :)

and if you try and watch when they do practice outside security will come and ask you to leave,,,there are no loiterring signs everywhere,,,but most practices are held inside during the regular season,,,

without a doubt we will be drafting an O-lineman in thye 1st round unless something crazy happens before we pick,,,that is where we need some 1st round talent at RT,,

  34. By rjdniner on Mar 23, 2012 | Reply

MAYBE SOMEONE BETTER MAKE SURE HES GOT HIS GAME TOGETHER .

  35. By candlestick faithful on Mar 23, 2012 | Reply

we are set at WR,,TE,,,RB,,QB,,,need a solid RT,,,we are set on defense,,,draft a DB for depth along with DL for depth,,, and we got dobbs who showed great promise last year,,,,this team is ready to WIN IT ALL right now,,,GO 49ERS!!!!

I wish that the niners were coming to the east coast to tampa or atlanta or the dolphins that along trip to south fl .

  37. By kram on Mar 23, 2012 | Reply

i”ll get to see them in new england this year hope niners crush the pats..never forget 9 years ago niners sucked and pats were smoking the niners when on fourth and 1 at the niners 30 with 2 seconds in third qtr. belichick calls a time out and has brady come in for a qb sneak for first down then he throws a td to start 4th..i can’t stand the pats and i’m from n.england..not many niner fans here everyone knows me. go niners this year baby..they r going to be solid this year! i need braging rights..

  38. By NINERSS ALL DAYYY on Mar 23, 2012 | Reply

Last year I drove 5 hours to see them play washington…This year they come to NY Baby and Ill make the trip up to New England so im happy about that…But CANDLESTICK FAITHFUL dont u think its pointless to draft a OL traditionally they cant play right away and I think the ones who can will prob be gone by then…DB i agree but we do have Brock, Culliver and just signed Cox…DL i can see us going after…or Wideout we are set this year but We are not getting much more than 1 year out of Moss…after that we got 2 receivers who are not #1 targets.
