Morning Tailgate: March 21

Posted by Taylor Price on March 21, 2012 – 10:13 AM

Shockwaves were felt across the NFL landscape this morning.

Sean Payton, head coach of the New Orleans Saints, has been suspended for a full year for his role in the team’s player performance payment scandal. Subsequently, the team will forfeit second-round draft picks in 2012 and 2013. General Manager Mickey Loomis has also been suspended for eight games and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, now with the St. Louis Rams, will be suspended indefinitely. ESPN senior analyst Chris Mortensen believes Williams will be out of football in 2012.

This matters especially to 49ers fans as the team moves up one spot in the second round of the 2012 draft and will face the Saints on the road in 2012 and the Rams twice next season.

Oh, and former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow was reportedly traded to the New York Jets for a fourth-round draft pick. The 49ers will face the Jets on the road in 2012, too.

Quite a busy Wednesday morning to say the least, but there are plenty of 49ers-related headlines to examine after the jump.

Sources confirmed to ESPN senior NFL writer John Clayton that quarterback Alex Smith has agreed on a three-year deal to stay with the 49ers.

Get your 84 jerseys out, or get ready to purchase them when the NFL unveils its Nike branding on April 3. New 49ers receiver Randy Moss announced on Twitter he’ll be wearing No. 84 this season. Also, running back Rock Cartwright has selected No. 28 for his 49ers uniform.

ESPN NFC West blogger Mike Sando examined the production of receivers aged 35 years and up like Moss. Sando notes that receivers in the mid 30s have produced at a high level.

Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle writes that free agent offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz visited with the 49ers on Tuesday.

According to Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports, Jim Harbaugh will attend the Sweet 16 this weekend to support his brother-in-law, Indiana head coach Tom Crean. Feldman also noted that Harbaugh along with his brother John, spoke with the team recently and the talk inspired a 10-2 stretch by the Hoosiers team ever since.

So the next chapter in the alex experiment can he live up to last year and what excuses will be used for his inabilty when all the pieces seem to be in place and will his fans or athletic suporters be able to handle his failure….or he may indeed amaze everyone with his amazing abilty to get better after 8 years as the rookies from last year are on his tail …can he outperform the 1 year guys and still can he do anything to help them team besides not throw the ball and rack up numbers for no int’s since he refuses to throw down field ….will the check down king amaze the rank and file

oh and if you are looking for an agent condon is the one he made the niners take alex smith back …the man is a genius got paid both ways and made his client get back on the team that he refused to sign with and yet signed for the same money ….hmmm that was wierd…no i dont want to sign that …oh wait not 1 team wants me after by non probowl year performance …well better sign …and the fans cheer for the bottom of the barrell …..welcome to n iner football and welcome to 3 more years of mediocre but we will try to get better alex …..8 years and nothing yet maybe after 15 years of loseing seasons the niners have just given up getting to the superbowl …they sold out the year of tickets all ready why bring in or rather get rid of old news just ride the wave and hang on is what the yorks and the coach are going to do …..i thought harbaugh was smarter than that

So Seven Years continues to dominate the first blogs right from the get-go with his Alex bashing. Why am I not suprise? What a miserable NO LIFE loser! Let it go man, your wish was not granted and you are spending every waking hour trying to convince us that you are right. All you convincing us is how pathetic of a loser you are. We signed Alex, do you want to hear us tell you, you are right & Jim Harbaugh is wrong? Whats the f@&king point now? The next step is focusing on the NFL Draft and signing more free agents. You continue to show how lame you are. Is your life that lame dueche?

They signed both Moss and Manningham so they could concentrate on guard and DB!! WR is much less a priority now, with Morgan coming back, they can draft one farther down in the draft!

alex got paid,,,and every single radion station,,sports analyst,,,and sports reporter,,even former head coaches like gruden and dungy all think that the 49ers over paid alex when there is a good possibility that the guy wont even be around next year,,,good luck alex,,,you will need it with all the naysayers around you and the brutal schedule that come along with a 13-3 record from the previous season

  17. By scott on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

alex is going to have another good year i like the people we signed if we dont get hurt we will be in the super bowl this year cant wait.

I agree Dave, 8 years is pathetic. I think maybe 8 ears and 49er faithful is the exact same person.

So what if there are nay sayers, when it comes to the niners, there are ALWAYS nay sayers. Sports annalists, writters, bloggers, talkers etc.. always count us out. Last year, we were figured to be bottom of the division again and what happened??? We made it to the NFC Championship game. Alex was just as much A Contributor in bringing that a foot as our def. and special teams were. It is a TEAM SPORT. Yes, our D was our strong point, but contributions were made by all three fazes. I am not worried about this tough schedule, I rather relish in it. The greater the challenges over come, the more the nay’s will start believing. 2 years with the same coaches and scheme, add the additions that were made and yet to come to solidify the roster, we will be just fine this season. FAITHFUL even after death… GO NINERS!!

Amen…Ur Conscience…Now here is a a dude who is making some sense. Nay sayers are wrong all the time. Who cares what they say! It adds no credense to any argument. These dueche bags are weak with all that, so and so says this and so and so says that, and this person did not work him out and these people booed Alex and this team did not want to sign him. It means NOTHING. Seattle signed Whitehurst for huge money a few years ago, so now they know true QB talent????? I don’t care who says what and who signed who. It mean DIDDLY. They are not GOD, when GOD says his opinion when I will give credense to it. Like those so called “experts” never made mistakes. Do you know how many “experts” criticized Walsh & Montana in the past? If you don’t remember those days than you really have not been a SF49er Fan for as long as you say. MAN there are a lot of weak dudes in this world. Its great to be me & I love my 49ers! ;)

  22. By dave g. on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

Yeah I am talking to you to “A TRUE 49ER FAITHFUL FAN” (as well as Jermomy and Seven years) ..Jon Gruden could never settle on a QB in Tampa & needs Redilin and Tony Dungy never had a good QB untl he inherited Peyton and he is a very insecure man who really does not know offense. Gruden could not win a SuperBowl until he inherited a great defense & Dungy could not win a SuperBowl until he inherited Peyton. What they think means DIDDLY like I said above! You are laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame.(see above for more of me slapping you b!tch and change your name because no you are not faithful duesche)

  27. By EIGHT YEARS WITH ALEX on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

same old story cant find anything good to say about alex and his talent so you resort to bashing true opinions and facts about how not 1 team wanted this guy and now we are stuck with him again …and no i dont have to wish for alex to be mediocre …he allready is he is the same QB as he was when he came here ….no talent and less between the ears than all the hype says about him he turned down …the offer handed to him and said it was an insult to his talent and yet when not 1 team really wanted him his agent had to save his carreer and make us wait for paytons choice wich was always going to be denver ……concodn made us wait till all the other QB’s were gone so we had to sign alex …..wake up and open your eyes …i cant believe you are so happy we got the bottom of the barrell of QB’s ….this based on facts not 2 team wanted him yet ..tebow has several teams that want him and flynn was given the same contract as smith and he only played 2 games lol facts and they are not disputed…..root for the draft no matter how many people we get on this allready awesome team it wont help a no talent QB who is all ready past his prime and usefullness

  28. By EIGHT YEARS WITH ALEX on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

oh and i am for the the players that bust there butts to make this team awesome ( not a QB who gives up and starts throwing balls in the dirt during a title game) wich he did …he is a quitter and i will not stand for that while these other guys make progress every game and yet alex stays the same you will get the same from him this year and it will not result in anything but more excuses from you about what else he needs to do his job

Deuche Bags like Seven Years (aka Eight Years), & A TRUE 49ER FAITHFUL FAN, and Jeromy seem to think Alex has pulled a con job over all of our heads and has ZERO skills and we somehow have to prove to him these skills. We don’t have to prove sh!t to you. We saw what he did last year with only ONE starting WR and Jim Harbaugh (Oh yeah remember him????). Jim Harbaugh believes in Alex. You can’t have it both ways. Either you trust Jim Harbaugh or you don’t. Are you saying you have a keen insight to quarterbacking that Jim Harbaugh does not. He is basically riding his career on a guy who has ZERO skills and he is clueless to seeing this? Is this what you are trying to convince us? You are somehow much more knowledgable than a guy who has proven to develop QB’s AND is in the ring of honor in Indiana Colts Stadium for NFL QB’ing BUT somehow Eight Years you are more perceptive than him in QB play…Is that what you are trying to convince us? Do you really honestly see yourself in that high esteem of football knowledge that you know better than Harbaugh OR do you think Mr. Smith has casted a magical spell on him. If thats what you honestly think than it sounds to me that you are also giving unicorns bl@wjobs on your free time. Unbelievable the idiots like Eight Years & his aforementioned cronies on thse blogs!

  33. By dave g. on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

Eight Years…You are lame & weak and come up with all these rediculous scenarios to somehow conjure up your case without having “A CLUE” what was happening behind the scenes. Do you think every conversation teams have with agents are leaked in the media????? Are you that naive? Where you there when Alex’s agent was talking to teams???? Do you really know for a fact which team or teams aside from Dolphins was and was not interested? Do you know who did and did not contact his agent? How you acting like you Jason LaCanforia with all this inside info. ? What a freaking joke…like we are now going to say…”Oh my god, you are so right Mr. Eight Years. What a strong case you have made”. 2 teams want Tebow and no one wanted Alex. Really is that what happened? Well that does it…you have been right all along! As I said before you are a loser on these blogs and in life! Yeah you smarter than Harbaugh on QB’s…REALLY? What a cheesed!ck.

  34. By dave g. on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

Eight Years….more like Eight Slaps that I have slapped you on these blogs…you lil b!tch. HAaaaaaaaaaaa! You have no game, and I will keep slapping you like the lil b!tch you are! Yeah keep coming with laaaaame comments like , “well this team wanted this guy and did not want this guy” based on what was leaked- yeah that really tells the whole story {sarcasm}. Or they will say , “I went to every home game last year” Oh really you diiiiiid. So Harbaughs seat was obstructed & missed the insightful ZERO skills that Alex displayed that you saw????? You know what story really means something….how about what a great coach like Harbaugh sees firsthand & believes in & is riding his NFL coaching career on??? I think I will stick to that instead of all your rediculous gossipy this player tried out here and this player was called but this player was not. And this team wanted this guy instead of Alex like you know every conversation that was had by all the NFL teams with all the players agents. Get it through your head….YOU DON’T KNOW MORE THAN HARBAUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just hope Moss actually plans on playing every offensive down instead of the ones where he knows he’s getting the ball. Manningham was a good pickup. Would have rather had Morgan on the team than Moss though. Glad to see the REAL NINER FANS have things to talk about than the same crap they spout evey week. It’s more annoying than the guy that has to tell everybody how he found five bucks on the ground eberytime he see’s you. Anyways, I dont think last years schedule was all that easy but this year’s does look more challenging. Oh well… thats why they play the game. GO NINERS!!!!

In 2011 season, Alex Smith also posted a career-high 90.7 QB rating, while leading the 49ers to five, 4th-quarter comebacks in the regular season, including four on the road. His four come-from-behind road victories tied the franchise record set by a guy named Joe Montana in 1989. And during the postseason, Smith tossed five touchdowns and no interceptions in two games WITH ONLY ONE HEALTHY STARTING WR…oh but according to the QB GURU named Mr. Eight Years, we need to somehow prove to him of any kind of skills he has because according to the GURU himself he has ZERO skills. Hear that Jim Harbaugh, you should have consulted Seven Years (aka. Eight Years). What a joke and pathetic dillusional cheesed!ck you are Eight Years!

I’ve been saying all along that 7/8 Years and Jeromy should look up Alex Smith’s profile, and see why last year was almost like his rookie year. Dave g..you are right on…I’ve said the same stuff in your blog to those 2 jokers….Manning himself had like a 92 QB rating…so Smith was right there in the mix. He can only improve with Harbaugh coaching him and having the same coaches around him for 2 years in a row.

All 7/8 years and Jeromy can do is whine some more …. They are trying their best to destroy the moral of fans …. their opinions don’t carry any weight and only serve to annoy. It makes you wonder if they are really from another team, trying their best to kill the 49er spirit.

Oh…wait….7/8 and Jeromy know more than the 49er coaches…..maybe they can be hired on…….NOT !

You have have a piont , what do you do with gore and we also got Dixon ? if gore can stay healthy we never had a serious down field threat then gore or hunter on option plays . One concern is RG get a FA and possiably get that kid from Standford that the one i like and we all know it goes back to one thing if the long ball isnt there teams wont take it serious .
