Morning Tailgate: March 20

Posted by Taylor Price on March 20, 2012 – 10:06 AM

There’s plenty to discuss this morning in our reoccurring week day post.

First, there’s talk regarding the top perimeter players available in this year’s draft and a prominent draft evaluator who has broken up the top wideouts into different tiers.

One of those players mentioned, Rutgers wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, was also the first player profiled in our 49 in 49: Big East Week coverage.

More on the top receivers in the 2012 NFL Draft class and of course, the latest in 49ers free agency headlines can be found after the jump.

Wes Bunting of the National Football Post breaks down the various tiers of receiver talent available in this year’s draft. According to Bunting, only Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon (photographed above) stands out as a top-tier prospect at the position.

As for the latest in 49ers free agency, the team would like Alex Smith to sign the contract that was reportedly offered to the eighth-year veteran. CEO Jed York spoke with reporters outside of team headquarters on Monday and told Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, “We’d like for (Smith) to be here.”

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports the team will host guard/tackle Geoff Schwartz at 49ers headquarters on Tuesday.

Lastly, with the Golden State Warriors retiring the No. 17 jersey of Hall of Fame forward Chris Mullin last night, the team recently aired a video of Mullin playing hoops with 49ers players at a charity event in the mid 90s.

you gotta feel pity for the fools who want to try and win with a qb who is,,,AT BEST,,,an avg. qb,,you cant say alex smith is an above avg. qb,,,anyone who does is not an informed football fan,,,THE FACT THAT NOT ONE SINGLE TEAM WAS INTERESTED IN SIGING ALEX SMITH DURING FREE AGENCY SHOULD PROVE WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT THAT THE REST OF THE GM’S AND HEAD COACHES FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT ALEX SMITH,,and dont start talking about how the dolphins were interested in him,,,,only after the fact they were dismissed by manning,,,yup,,,we got to the NFC CHAMPSHP GAME LAST YEAR,,,do you think alex had most to do with that,,,or was it our defense and special teams providing good field posistion for us to kick field goals,,,,ths saints played man ALL GAME LONG,,,look back at ALL the games like i do every day,,,i have watched every game from last season about 5 times each,,and besides the bucs game,,,which the players obviously quit on their coach,,,every analyst was in agreement on that,,,,and the saints game,,alex was indecisive and inaccurate for most of each game,,,it was rad watching THE DEFENSE GET US BACK IN THE EAGLES GAME,,,SAME GOES FOR THE LIONS GAME,,,,BUT IT WAS NO FUN WATCHING ALEX MISS THROWS OR UNDER THROW WIDE OPEN RECVRS.,,,TIME FOR A CHANGE,,,AFTER 7 YEARS OF FAILURE,,,YOU SO CALLED FANS WANT TO SEE MORE OF THAT?????SHAME ON YOU FOR CALLING YOURSELFS FANS WHO WANT TO SETTLE FOR MEDIOCRE,,,I WANT WINNERS,,,,AT LEAST SINGLETARY HAD THAT PART RIGHT!!!!!!

Of course our defense is the dominant force of our team, we spent the last 7 years buildingin it up, Alex has had a different offensive system every single year and in year ONE of having an offensive minded coach who would publicly back him we got to one game of the superbowl and if it wasnt for he who shall not be named giving the ball to the giants twice we would have gone to the superbowl. After the RUN and the CATCH III its ridiculous for anyone to doubt smith, hes our guy, what the niners have to do is divide up the money that were planning for peyton give alex 4 years 40 mill, and then give our rd 1 30th pick and the other 50 mill to land mike wallace, CUT williams, and resign ginna and we have a dynasty once again pure and simple. Start livin up to your name if you call urself part of the FAITHFUL or go across the bay

OK CHECK THIS OUT . THE 49ERS HAVE OFFERED ALEX SMITH WHICH I AM A FAN OF GO BACK AND LOOK AT MY PAST COMMENTS THE SAME CONTRACT THEY OFFERED FLYNN WHO IS A 1 GAME WONDER. I HOPE WE SIGHN ALEX . BUT LET ME SAY THAT WE CAN GET IT DONE WITH COLIN CAPPERNICK . ESPECIALLY WITH ALL THE TALENT THE ORGANZATION HAS ASEMBBLED THIS TEAM WITH ON OFF. AND DEF./ ALEX DESERVES A 4 YEAR DEAL W/ A 5TH YEAR OPTION .

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO……you guys are grabbing from the bottom of the barrell and saying that he is the best ..and better than a guy who obviously put up decisive wins coming off the bench with good mechanics and a nose fo the game …flynn i am talking about of course ….alex has not proven anything accept that after 8 years he needs more training …i bet that Kap will need less than alex as in 8 years to make an impact in the league

WTF is your problem so called 49er faithful? Why all the caps, dick? Alx isn’t great but no one is saying he is. We need a QB to bridge the gap for Kaepernick and Smith is it. Sure Manning would have been perfect for that, but smith is the next best option of the available QBs. Plus smith is healthy, and for the first time has a Oline that doesn’t suck. Harbaugh took the pressure off him last year and look what happened. He didn’t strive but he won us a few games. And those few games HE won us, Philly, was the difference of playing in NO or in San Fran, which resulted into a playoff win. I’m not saying Smith is great. I’m saying he Needs to be this teams QB this next year if we want to be good. Kaepernick isn’t winning 9 games next year with that brutal schedule. And we can’t afford to waste a year for Kaepernick to “get experience” with our dominant Defense.

Basic Point, if your saying we’re not real niner fans cuz we support our QB, then your F***ing retarded!

hey i only comment when i see comments on how alex is so good and he went 13-3 as with the same comments about how he is the best for the niners when he obviously cant get it done …and when the niners sign him because that is what condon has forced them to do he will be even worse …not because he is jaded but because the schedule last year was cake …yes cake …and this year adn for the next 3 at least will be even harder and no i do not believe that alex can put up the points he needs to to help us win …based off of last years performance …when the kicker scored all the points and broke records

Very simple alex brings nothing to the table other than 8 years of sub par QBing for the niners and also he has created the cituation by not signing the gratious offer the niners put forth

  20. By Jeremiah on Mar 20, 2012 | Reply

no problem with you seven, just the 49erfaith, I’m not in love with Smith either, but he will be better then kaep next year and therefore with that brutal schedule gives us the best chance to win. and that dominant defense wont be in tact forever and we cant waste a year for kaep to gain experience. plus Smith WILL resign with the niners so why should we not support our QB?

  21. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 20, 2012 | Reply

I dont see how anyone would want to risk another year of alex,,,those who follow these morning tailgate blogs know that I myself said just last year that alex was our best chance at winning,,,how many games from the start of last season that without our kick butt defense would we have won? dont for a minute think that the system gregg roman ran last year will look anything like this upcoming seasons will,,,kaepernick, and tolzein will have just as much work this off season as will alex,,,,if he signs his offer sheet,,,,after 7 years of watching,,,AND PUTTING MY FAITH in alex,,,i am ready for a change at ther most important spot on the roster,,,arent you?????????any REAL fan would agree,,,,you want to try and “WIN WITH ALEX”,,,AGAIN??I dont,,,give someone else a shot,,,,faith,,,by the way is believing with your head,,,not your heart,,,,,,,,you have followed your hearts this long with alex,,and after 7 LONG YEARS OF LOSING,,,IM NOT READY TO TRADE ONE YEAR OF WINNING TO POSSIBLY GO BACK TO,,”THE SAME OLD ALEX”,,,THIS DEFENSE IS BUILT TO GIVE A GOOD YOUNG QB A CHANCE TO GROW QUICKLY,,,THOSE WHO REALLY KNOW OUR TEAM SHOULD SEE THAT,,,,and who said I have been a alex hater all his time here? I said take him over rodgers even though I live 10 mins from where rodgers played college ball,,,watched all of rogers games,,,and still wated alex,,,his IQ,,,football IQ,,,HE SEEMED THE BEST SHOT,,,HE WASNT,,,TIME TO GIVE A NEW YOUNG QB A SHOT AT GLORY,,FOR DOESNT THAT YOUNG QB HAVE THE VERY SAME FAITH IN HIMSELF TO TRY?? THATS HOW THE GREAT ONES ARE FOUND,,,,

Whatever, I’m done arguing with someone that is going to claim to be a fan and hate our QB next year. I HATED Dorsey, Rattay, Dilfer, O’Sullivan and more but still supported them! There’s no point in arguing considering Smith will start next year and will again lead them to the postseason (probably like 10-6). I hope Kaep does start next year cuz that means he would had beaten out Smith for the starting job. Just don’t see him doing it. But i’m done, you win poser. Hurry up and insult me some more so you can have the last word and argue how none of us are real fans for supporting our QB… Go niners!

Jeremiah I kinda agree with you but I think the 9ers will win one or two more games then 10. but Alex needs to improve on last year like 3800 yards 25 tds and less then 10 ints

Lets break it down. Alex is an average quarterback with potential to be great. Getting an average QB is hard, and last year was honestly his best chance and overall, I would have given him a B. When he was drafted he was 21 and after injury and horrible situations finally showed he has the potential last season to lead a team, but is not the talented star that will light up the NFL. Last post-season he showed promise with limited receiver talent. I do not see any other better options and it is sad that Manning chose to go for the paycheck instead of the multiple titles as he will never go to the Superbowl in Denver. I am ok with Alex coming back, primarily as I think Colin needs to master the playbook, become more involved in the game and develop which hopefully he is doing every day. I look forward to seeing Colin play in his first full preseason with mini-camps and see if with the addition of a few receivers Alex’s only second year in the same system shows improvement. Then and only then will we be able to judge how much both of them have grown this past year and if we think the timetable for Colin to take over is in 1,2 or 3 years..or maybe never. Colin is very talented, and I want to see him play…but with Niners so close, it is hard to say when without seeing more film.

lol we are all saying the same thing accept for the verbage is all wrong …alex prob had his best year rideing our defense and a very weak schedule ….he will not be able to do anything next year so why bother i am ready for new blood and not seeing the niners be the goat of the league by paying smith even more money …he is a bust always was ….move on

besides some of the best QB’s were not picked #1 at all a lot were 2nd and 3rd rounders that were hungry not standing there with an A average and not doing a dang thing that realates to football ….alex has not 1 skill to play in this league and it shows and was proven by this freeagency period for all to see …and yet still there are people who want to sign the bottom of the board …..comeon guys he is dead weight and even more now that he feels he is a high calliber QB lol …..he cant sign any where else the niners are the only suckers and that is what burns the most …that the team i have rooted for for all these years is the goat and the sucker ….drop the average joe and lets see who wants it …even if the QB who plays for us has 1 ounce of talent it will be better than alex

Alex is only 28 and he is growing in to be a good NFL QB. He has strength & knowledge not to mention a great defence, and now not only VD & Crabs, but Moss & Manningham to throw to. He has been primed with many different NFL ideologies and HE IS MORE HUNGRY THAN EVER! Alex & JH are in sinc. & will be a force to be reckoned with if all of the other components are in place. Remember that it wasn’t Alex who lost the trip to the superbowl. Besides, who is going to fill Alex’ shoes at this point. Nobody has it better than us!

he did play a weak schedule but this is the NFL and there are NO pushovers. 17:5 with a 60% completion rate is pretty decent no matter who your playing. Why do you guys want him gone after his best year of his career? do you think kaep could have put up those numbers last year or even this year? no, he’s at least one year, if not two away. Plus, who knows, this could be a monster year for Smith considering, even with our defense, we will still have to throw the ball to compete with those teams. Give Smith another year and if he doesn’t show monumental progress, and if kaep is ready, then we’ll still be fine. No harm no foul.

I think bringing Alex back is a smart move right now, Kaepernick is not as ready as everyone thinks. Yeh yeh yeh it would have been great to have Manning and Alex Smith needs to understand that and get over it. There are no other teams interested in him and as far as Flynn, he is not even proven yet, 2 games and 1 game that was against a defense that didnt even play for anything that he was amazing, yeh were gonna see what Flynn does with the Dolphins lline and there WR’s who are now minus Brandon Marshall. Like I said, right now Alex is the best option the 49ers have but all in all if he doesnt come back lets try out Kaepernick and hey lets think about this one, Tim Tebow, wonder what Harbough can do with him. Never know, he could be great, its only his mechanics that need work. But enough dreaming for now, we bring back Alex, he is gonna have more weapons to throw to so if he fails then we know last year was a fluke and throw in Kaepernick and then we all will know we had a 1 year fluke and gone. honestly I dont believe it but were gonna see, I think he might surprise us all.

7, 49er “faithful”, and the rest of the Smith haters, you guys keep harping and harping and harping on the “next guy”. Doesn’t matter who it is as long as it’s not Smith. You had Tim Rattay, Ken Dorsey, Cody Pickett, Trent Dilfer, Shawn Hill, Chris Weinke, JT O’Sullivan and Troy Smith. Each and every single one of those guys was praised as having better skill sets, better talent, better whatever by many on these blogs. Every one of them washed out trying to play behind the same line and same receiving core that Alex had to work with. Every one. We finally have get a decent year from the O-Line, and with a strong D, we were a near miss to the super bowl. Now that we seemingly have all the pieces with the addtion of these WR’s you want to change the most important position on the field with a complete unknown? You have to be kidding. Tell me that you are kidding.

  40. By 49ertime on Mar 20, 2012 | Reply

Might as well get my 2 cents in, cause everyone else is. I admit as most, before last season I grew to hate smith, but not because he lost but more by the way he lost, the way he carried him self the way he would turn the ball over at critical moments of the game. Last season he came in with a whole different attitude, I could actually hear him calling plays and mixing it up, he was confident, and he was just flat out making better decisions which allowed the team to win the games. True he didn’t single handedly win games or blow teams out, but he put the team in positions to win games by not making mistakes and at this point looking around the league that makes for a good QB in my mind. What really earned my respect though was the fact that for 4 or 5 years he took blame for everything, and instead of bailing out he got over it, and thats what I want from a QB when going gets tough he don’t just bailout. Smith is on the uprise to be the QB everyone thought he would be when he was drafted #1 in 05. So all of you gotta stop haten on him and start beleiving in him the game is a lot more than stats, they made there decision anyway he will be or QB next season and the sky is the limit. I agree with Harbaugh he is our guy! Go Niners!

I guess it’s all about the best chance of winning, wasn’t the real reason Payton didn’t choose SF.I didn’t buy any of the stuff he said why he picked Denver…but i’m glad he did..Now if coach H can get Kap from staring down receivers & ignoring the safety’s where abouts during a real off season camp…the 49ers can move on already!

uhhh yeah alex did lose that game the back up return guy was trying to make something happen aftern 12…3 and outs form alex and his throwing the ball in the ground and or out of bounds …you say the receivers sucked that they didnt want to win that they are not in the NFL because of their skill and talent ….well yeah that is right they are in the same NFL that let alex in and alex is suposed to be better than all the rest he is suposed to lead them if they stray he is suposed to bring em back in ….and yeah ehhhh no good alex decided to give up and the team knew it and tried to fight with out him and the kid got unlucky but at least he tried …alex had several oportunities to drive the ball and didnt …at the end of the game the running game tried to elp alex and he threw the ball in the dirt 3 times in a row …so yeah alex quit and you guys want to put him on your shoulder …shame on you he gave up on his guys he is the loser and should be gone …simple as that

and still not one of you alex fans can give one good talent alex has to bring to the table for the team …8 years and he cant read defenses he cant even throw the ball over the defensive line …i mean he is pretty tall right …..and as for down field he never throws down field because he cant read the defense and or thow a slant route because he has no accuracy …alll those QB’s are gone because they had the same problem ….not good enough for the NFL why waste more years even one when the results of last year were mediocre and yet you seem to think it was grand ….do you really think if alex was that good that he would still be unsigned lol coming here again will ruin us even more as the team who taook back the bottom of the board and payed him good money after bad the niners are a joke the yorks are looking like idiots and the coach is about to make the same mistake that the other coaches did with alex ….by keeping him

For whoever was hoping that Manning was going to sign with the niners, you really need to ask yourselves what it is that you are rooting for… Would a superbowl under a QB whose jersey will be retired in a different stadium mean anything? It wouldn’t to me. Kaepernik… ok. If we sign some other new QB who takes us there… then fine – he can be the new face of the franchise. But not Manning. Manning is a Colt and will always be a Colt. If there is a God, we’ll get the trophy with Smith. He deserves it more than anyone, and I deserve to see him and the rest of my team get it. That’s what I’m rooting for. A championship of substance.

Smith needs to go. Go be a fish, go be a bird, go be some other animal but just go. Let Kaepernick lead the team to victory. Colin has an arm like a rifle and with Moss, Manningham, Crabtree and Davis as receivers the Niners can’t go wrong. Smith can’t throw the ball, he takes too long to find his receivers. Get rid of him.

I liked Shawn Hill and yes, I thought he did pretty well. Maybe as good as Alex. My point was that many here continue to only blame the last number of horrible years on the QB. And each and ever single one of those QB’s I named was touted as the next great saviour. And each one of them washed out. You couldn’t bring big name QB’s in here because they were all playing on better teams, which is a big part of the reason their numbers are better. Niner fans were spoiled through the 80’s and have folded under a long draught. You all expect Montana and Young to just be on the field every year. It doesn’t work that way. We now, finally after the past 10 years, have a real team. Sign Alex to a moderate salary that give him some respect to a 3 year deal. If he doesnt’ get it done now, then we’ll know. I believe that he will get it done. Then we’ll sign him for big time money and he’ll finish his career in the bay area.

And do any of you guys remember why Hill got replaced? Cuz the niners were down by 21 points against the texans at houston and they knew hill, while a good qb and even more of a “game manager”, couldn’t throw like smith and smith gave them the best chance at winning.

  59. By seven years with Alex on Mar 20, 2012 | Reply

i see and lets say that alex gets all this talent in 3 years and now is a freeagent after 11 years in the league and now ..according to you is so much better that we have to sign him to a big deal ….do you really think that he will stay here for the little bit of cap room that we have …no he will go to the biggest spot ..if at all this happens …never ….but we will go with it for your sake …..you think he wont go and get the money form a team that will pay him if he is all that better …..lol see no matter what alex will be a waste of time if he gets better he will go somewhere else after the niners held his hand for so long and took babay steps for him and made coach harbaugh the babysitter of the league …come on

  60. By J-42 on Mar 20, 2012 | Reply

From day 1 I’ve been of the mindset that Alex is a bust. And not because he doesn’t have talent (which he doesn’t have a lot of), but because he’s a total douche. He held out for tons of money without being a proven player in the NFL, then, after getting a contract offer this year by the 49ers, he goes out and looks at his options. He is just damn lucky he’s had a job for the last 7 years. He’s not an elite QB, and had one good year. He doesn’t deserve an elite contract. If he comes back and leads this team to a SB win and to the playoffs for the next few, then he pushes up into the elite status, but not until he proves himself consistenly.

He changed my mind over the last few years with his contract re-structuring and his work he put in during the lockout, but he proved once again he’s an A$$. Let him shop around, pull the offer, and let him come crawling back asking to play for this team. Then offer him the minimum. He takes it or doesn’t play football next year.

seven years… I can barely follow what the hell you are talking about. You give other Alex haters like Jerome and 49er Faithful a bad name becuse you are nearly illiterate. But I will try. You constantly ask what skills does A Smith have:
Accuracy. You will scoff at this. I do not. For much of his career has has been abused. You simply can’t deny this. It’s tough to throw when you are running for your life. It just is. Legs. He is a threat to pull it down and run with it at any time, something that Harbaugh encouraged him to do when other coaches did not. He did it very effectively last year. And 49er Faithful, this is one area that Shawn Hill lacked in comparison to Smiith. Shawn Hill is not athletic. Alex is. Arm. Again, you will scoff, but I’ve seen him make a number of thows downfield right on the money. So he has the strength, he needs the receivers. Who has he had to throw to… honestly, tell me who he has had to throw to on a consistent basis? No one! Name all the other QB’s that you drool over ever freakin’ post. They all have a core of receivers that have been with them for years! Intelligence. You all laugh at him for being a great game manager, but he game managed his way to 13 wins. That means not throwing interceptions just to prove to you freakin’ idiots that he can throw the ball deep. Integrity. My favorite freakin skill/atribute that is lacking in so many professional athletes. Too often I rooting for athletes to fail becuse the don’t deserve to be praised. I am proud to have Smith representing me and my team. There’s not another jersey I rather wear.

49er faithful, you aren’t being honest when you say “this defense has been every bit as good with some shakey db play” That like saying “this ship is every bit as good as that with the exception of a few holes in the hull”. We couldn’t get off the field until last year. Yes, our run defence has been excellent for a number of years but teams would simply throw the ball on third down (regardless of the distance) and we’d start all over again. Let’s be honest with each other. I’m not saying that Alex is the best QB that has ever played (which I think is what Seven is accusing anyone who has a contrary oppinion to his of). I’m saying the team has not been ready even if we did have the best QB that has ever played. That QB would have been wasted. What I’m saying is that we still don’t know. Last year for the first time we got a glimpse with a strong team on a season with now off-season and no WR’s. And what we gathered from that glimpse is the NFC Championship game at home. Do you really want to cut Alex now and throw in some other comlete unknown? Now when we might finally be able to see what he can do?

its not that Alex didnt get any help, its that Alex didnt help
i watched the games, & ball after ball tearing divots out of the turf(they actually had an Alex boy to run out & replace them)
Alex stood there time after time until they smashed him, good QBs dont just stand in one spot for 10 seconds, they know that after four seconds, or the sight of any pressure coming in, you need to move then, not wait, start moving & give the receivers a chance to get open & catch the ball
Are QBS supposed to be able to throw while on the run? cuz Alex has about a 10% completion rate if he is on the move

simple alex was over come and blew the game plain and simple if it is not written out for him he cant do it ….yeah he is the smartest guy out there because he made several coaches and coordinators adn owners and fans believe that he will be good one day just keep giving him money

right on 49er faithful, let them fight it out & the best man starts, another reason Alex should go, i do not believe he will win the competition therefor it is much better for us to draft & QB for less money & spend the $ we would have wasted on Alex on another receiver, or off line depth, or resigning T. Ginn

niners are better off without him and his distractions …..work with kap and he will be just as good if not better by the time pre season rolls around …. i mean anyone can throw check downs all day right oh and the ocasional ball to the wide open guy ….any can do that ….although when moss heads out on that first play and kap bombs it out so moss catches it in stride you will all say …thats our guy and tell all your friends to heck with alex even though you still cry he has not sign yet …truth be told alex was done 2 years ago he got lucky that harbaugh gave him a chance and after the coach saw a couple of games he made alex by handcuffing him and telling the other guys hey we have to do more to make up for this dude and his obvious bad QB’ing adn alex rode the team to where they went and when they needed alex tostep he did in the siants game against man coverage …..the giants watched the ravens tape and did exactely what the ravens did to stuff alex …force him to win the game …..and the rest is history

I can’t take the crap that 49ers Faithful is dishing out as criticism of Alex Smith. Alex played an absolutely magnificent playoff game against New Orleans, almost single-handedly winning the game with two fourth quarter come-backs. Add to that the other five comebacks he lead during the 13-3 stunning season, and wow did he ever step up his game in 2011. Yes the defense and special teams were outstanding but for all of us that watched each and every game at least twice, Alex played outstanding with only 5 picks with 17 tds plus a few running tds as well. Add to that that the offensive players like Vernon Davis, Frank Gore, and the offensive line all look up to Alex as a leader. So please 49ers faithful, change your name to 49ers unfaithful and wake up to how fortunate we are to have Alex Smith as our qb, with of course Harbaugh tutoring and encouragement. Add now Randy Moss and Mario Maningham and how exciting its going to be to have new weapons to surround Alex. They can’t just double up Vernon now. This is going to be an exciting offense and defense and special teams in 2012 and I can’t wait.

What kind of STUPID comment is saying that people must not have ever watched a full game since 1999. Since all of you haters on this board know sooooo much more than the coaches, why don’t you guys coach the Niners? And to say that Alex Smith lost the championship game is almost the DUMBEST thing I ever heard in my life. Ya, he didn’t win it… but he didn’t lose it either. Last time I checked it’s a team sport but you football guru’s know everything about football and we peasants know nothing. Why don’t you enlighten all of us non-football going individuals what it takes to win superbowls since YOU have won so many. Have you ever even played football? Go ahead and lie and tell me how you were a high school all-american and a first string college all star. I’ve heard it all before. But since you know soooo much more than Harbaugh, go ahead and enlighten me!

DID HE RETURN THAT PUNT IN OT? DID HE GIVE EM THE BALL WHEN IT MATTERED? BOTTOM LINE HE WAS NOT THE REASON 9ERS LOST THAT GAME AND YOU ARE A FOOL NOT TO NOTICE THE IMPROVMENT FROM HIM NO OTHER QB BESIDES JASON CAMBELL HAS GONE THROUGH WHAT HE HAS NO OTHER QB IN THE PLAyoffs HAD WEAK RECIEVERS LIKE HE DID AND YOU STILL PISS ON HIM IF YOUR CAN DO BETTER GO TRY OUT YOU FAKE 9ER FAN

    Jerome, Seven, 49er Faithful,
We all have our opinions. Some coming from a place of experience, some not. This is a blog. None of you, nor I, have any credibility whatsoever as the credentials and knowledge you think you have are completely unsubstantiated. Stop acting as if you are educating anyone here. You’re not. You bend stats to support your argument as I bend them to support mine. A case for and against Alex can and has been made here and across the league. What you can’t dispute is his character and heart – the two intangibles that don’t show up in any stats and the only two things that can’t be taught. That is why I’m extremely happy he was resigned. Try to enjoy the road to the superbowl even with your mouths stuffed full of crow.

I am back in the house to say that signing Alex was what I wanted all along because I know it is what is best for us. Alex is a man of high character who could have given up on us many times before BUT the great Jim Harbaugh knows what he has with Alex. All the Alex haters have ZERO credentials to judge him as Temper clearly pointed out. And from the sounds of it Jeromy & Seven Years want him to fail so they can say “I told you so”. Nothing reflects their extreme lameness and patheticness more than that. You are not a real fan if you root for one play next year to see him fail. I know we can & will win a SB with Alex and I will be rooting for my Red & Gold like I always have! Man…it feels good & I love my SF49ers!

Wow!!! I’m so glad this is over with. Alex is very smart, I’m sure he understands that Peyton Mainning is a future hall of famer. Any team in our position would have done the same. Hopefully he can continue to excell under Coach Harbaugh. Alex has never had the weapons that he will have this coming season. I’m very excited to see what he can do with so many options. I’m sure Frankie is pumped too, he loves Alex and with the WR talent that we now have the holes will open up more this up coming season. Great job Trent Baalke, you are a huge reason our franchise is back on track to success.
    In Harbaugh I Trust.

I’m 100% behind Harbaugh’s decision, I think he knows what he is doing. He guided this team to the NFC Championship game last year, let him guide the team this year. So….rather than some of us…and you all know who…continuing to bad mouth Alex, let’s rally behind the team. We need to show them support , no matter who is or isn’t on the team this coming year. Please stop the put downs, the insults and the hate talk…..start supporting the team and show them we are 49ers fans…good and bad years, ups and downs, and if you can’t do that…..then go away and find some other team to give your oh-so-valuable advice to.

You-who-hate might remember Steve Young’s early days as a starter…boo’d and no one had anything good to say about him. Heck, even Joe Montana wouldn’t speak to him. But then…look how it turned out.

I’ve never said that I proclaim Alex the savior of our franchise. Not once. In fact I’ve said many times that there is no such person. A single player cannot be the savior of a football team. The team has been adding pieces over the course of the last 10 years. Some have worked, others have not. You obviously think Alex has not worked. I disagree and say we still don’t know. Personally I think he’s got allot of talent is a smart and solid athlete and a solid individual. But savior? Doesn’t exist – it’s a team sport. Win as a team and lose as a team.

  169. By temper on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

I have never said that you were a non-fan. In fact one of my last posts stated directly the opposite. Trying to determine who is a real fan and who is not is a pointless waste of time. I’ve been a niner fan since before the game of football was invented – I win. See… ridiculous. Re-read my post, I think you must have missed it.

You think shouting about dumping Smith is the gutsier more “ball-sey” move? As you said yourself, there were a whole lot more people booing Alex during those games than not booing. So which do you think is the gutsier move – defending him or throwing him under the bus? It’s far easier to scapegoat every bad thing that happens on to one person. On this point, you don’t have a leg to stand on. Your path is easy. There will always be the next guy in line – you don’t have to stand up for anybody.

I am looking forward to seeing CK in the preseason to see how much he has progressed. The kid has a laser throw and seemed to have very good pocket awarenessin the games he played in!

And how did Smith lose the nfc champ game? we didnt have any receivers!! and if we did a great receiving core, than why did our coaching staff go after receivers in free agency this year? during the nfc champ game we had a slot receiver palying on the outside trying to stretch the field and had a 2nd year player playing on the other side…..Smith could have forced the ball and gave the giants a int on our side of the 50…but since we have the best specail teams in the league….and D….a smart coach would punt and not turn the ball over.

YOU DONT START THE POINTING GAME ON ANYONE AFTER A LOSE, BUT IF I WAS DISAPOINTED IN ONE EVENT DURING THE GAME, IT WAS THE 2 PLAYS OUR SAFTIES MADE WHEN THEY TOOK 2 INT’S AWAY FROM US AND KNOCKED OUR STARTING CORNER OUT THE GAME…..THAT WAS PISS POOR FOOTBALL AND NOT SEEING THE FIELD.

HOLY G—P i can not belive you just made that statment about Alex ,So your telling every one that he is better than JOE MONTANA IN THE 4th qter , are you going to stand by that . As far as taking care of the football , that he is better than brady , rogers , manning both of them , brees .all have been to the pro bowl . your saying this because of ONE YEAR hey did you think about that before you put it on this blog . .

It may or may not happen but if alex takes us to the sb this year I want to know what all you alex haters will write about. I hope he does.

rjd, 2012 contract offer $24 mil, with $4 guaranteed, $4 in incentives!
not much better then last year, and not much for an Elite NFL-QB?
Last year 2011 he made $6.5 mil $4 guaranteed $2.5 in incentives
In the 7 years Alex has been our QB he has made $38, Million.

Now thats a lot of money to me and maybe you? But not a lot in NFL money for a QB! And to all you basher!!! If the 9ers don’t/didn’t want Alex all they had to do is just cut the kid.

I’m guessing they were willing to give payton his $18 mil guaranteed
then they offer Alex $4mil plus $4 in incentives for “My guy”
“Our future QB” “an NFL Elite QB” all Harbaugh words

after reading all these negative and poisitive blog posts about alex smith,,I have come to the conclusion that all of you seem to be 49er fans,,some of you like alex and some of you dont,,,I myself have been critical of smith as well as cheer him on as he has done well,,,,It has been a trying 7 years with alex,,the guy has never had any real chance to grow untill last year,,,albeit with a very broke down basic vanilla style offense,,,,with all the new guys to throw the ball to,,alex has run out of excuses,,,he will either get it done this year or risk being replaced,,,I am hoping that he will flourish,,,but he will be hard pressed to win over the fans at the ‘stick,,they never booed steve young they way they have booed alex,,and Im talking about EVERY home game,,,sometimes every play,,but,,,its another year and its another chance to win the big prize,,,so here’s to crossing my fingers and and getting ready for the most important 10 home games in recent memory,,,2012 here we come,,,season ticket re-up money has been sent,,,all that is left is the draft,,training camp,,,the pre season,,and then,,,,LET’S GET IT ON!!!

no thats a stat…..not my opinion, when he came back against the saints the last time he set the record…..via the annoucers. montana will always be at the top of my list just for the fact he was the QB when i became a fan. yep…i think that Smith does not force the ball and makes plays for his team and not a stat or ego….do i think he is better as far as a deep ball or a total player…come on, no. but i still think we have not seen the best football from Smith.

    What is the record ?

  188. By sdkota9er on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

the record was like 7 and it was his 8th for the season. i will look for it, if u think i am full of $hit. i was surprised myself, just because we r takling Montana and Young. even if i am off on the number…..Smith still has the record wether it is 10 or 6.

MONTANA 31 4TH QTER WINS . I agree he has the pices to realy perform at that or take to the next level . When a QB holds that trophy he has earned the right to be call elite .

    A few things I’ve learned in life……

    1. You simply cannot reason with an idiot.

    2. When you argue with an idiot, those looking from the outside cannot distinguish between who is retarded and who is not.

    3. 49er Faithful is a poser.

So referering to his one year OK eating a littl crow here :)

  193. By Basil on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

I expect better things this year, and for Alex/us to do much better in the redzone and on third conversions. But we can’t bash on Alex after each game, its a 16 game season, and lets kept in mind NY fans where ready to can manning 2 or 3 times last season.
Roman needs to open it up some, lets throw the ball, if 7 & his crony are right and coach doesn’t have the confidents in Alex to throw the ball more? why in the Hill didn’t they just CUT him?
7 years and we haven’t cut Alex there has to be a reason?

  194. By rjdniner on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

BASIL Iam going to continue to say that kide Scott TOLZIN is the better of the two , ALEX with the pices in place hes going to kick in the door . Iam refering to colin and scott got that :)

Jeromy is so witty and quick with his words. What a cheesed!ck. HaaaaaaaHaaaaaaaa. LOSER!

  196. By dave g. on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

49ERS FAITHFUL..you are lumped in to the weak idiocy that defines Seven Years & Jeromy. I don’t care what others say or what team signs who first or which team this QB visits. Here is one for you…have you heared of a Bell Curve? See most of the people in this world are of average intelligence with some a little higher than others. The fewest are the supremely intelligent and the incredibly stupid. Just because the majority sees things one way does not make them right. You follow, its weak and lame to support your case on what you “THINK” the majority feels. It don’t make them right & you weak to use that to support your case. You are a weak Omega Male which is why you need to do this to feel right. Jim Harbaugh knows what he is doing, and if you think you better qualified them him than you are on the incredibly stupid section of that BELL CURVE. PERIOD. ~ From an ALPHA MALE who just slapped another lil b1tch! You weak b1tches are too easy. If this was the caveman days I would have all women & you would be cutting my toe nails with your teeth and thanking me! HAAAAAAA!

  197. By okcniner on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

    That was really weak Dave.

“It’ll also be a challenge to record as many fourth-quarter comebacks or memorable moments like the ones witnessed in the playoffs. Under Smith’s watch, the 49ers registered five, fourth-quarter comebacks in the regular season, four of which took place on the road tying Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana’s franchise record set in 1989.”

  199. By sdakota9er on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

Smith must have broke the record VS. the Saints.

  200. By Guam49er on Mar 21, 2012 | Reply

I don’t think anyone is saying that Alex Smith is the best QB out there, however he is the best QB for the 49ers. 2nd year with the coach that helped him become descent last year and 2nd year in Roman system. Smith is our best option period.

  201. By dave g. on Mar 22, 2012 | Reply

Oh ok OKCNINER you know you got a chuckle out of the whole thing. Don’t try to use the weak card back on an Alpha Male. I know, you worried that you would be left with no chicks if it was the caveman days. But don’t worry I will let you have the one with the thick shoulders. Yeah, I know she has hairs coming out of her mole & an adams apple BUT she has big child bearing hips & if you lucky and pray enough you just might get a son who has a chance to be a Beta Male. Haaaaaaa! Dude I am Pro-Alex relax….common now you barking at the wrong dude.
