Morning Tailgate: March 15

Posted by Taylor Price on March 15, 2012 – 10:24 AM

It’s been a frenzied start to the 2012 free agency period.

The 49ers have already signed two players to the team who were out of football in 2011, but look to be primed for breakout returns under NFL Coach of the Year Jim Harbaugh.

A longtime NFL writer, who once covered the 49ers as a beat writer during Bill Walsh’s heyday, believes Harbaugh is best suited to get the most out of Randy Moss and Perrish Cox.

More on those opinions and the latest 49ers-related free agency headlines can be found after the jump.

Clark Judge of CBS Sports sees Harbaugh and the 49ers coaching staff able to get the most out of Moss and Cox. Judge’s reasoning: “The 49ers’ coach has an unerring belief in himself and what he’s doing, and it’s hard to argue with the results.”

The 49ers lost guard Adam Snyder in free agency to a divisional rival, when Snyder signed a five-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals. Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle previews some of the 49ers options in replacing Snyder as the team’s starting right guard.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee analyzed the 49ers free agency approach thus far, and believes the team’s needs at wide receiver can still be further addressed in free agency.

Perhaps one of those players could hail from the campus of Cal Berkeley. 49ers.com covered Cal’s pro day on Wednesday, make sure to check out our video and written recaps of the event.

New 49ers cornerback Perrish Cox appreciates the warm welcome from the team’s Faithful fans.

I don’t see that many hole we have to fill this year. That was pretty awesome for our team to acheive that much in the first year of a true offensive scheme. The aquisition of Randy Moss ought to drive those defenses crazy this season. Go get it boys.

That og out of STANDFORD you know who am talking RATED AS THE TOP OG IN THE DRAFT if he there in the scound round grab him ..if we dont signe MANINGHAM , Is Alex BOONE righty to step in that spot , hes gonna have to now

  6. By fuzzy9er on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

Cox is the same special teams guy as Costanza. First down the field. Why let one go and sign another? Snyder was rated the worst RG in the NFL last year draft a good one like the guy from Iowa State Osemele. We still need either Manningham or Wallace at WR.

Kilgore it is then? Maybe the Stanford guys on the practice squad will now be looked upon to contribute?

WE Need players that can have the attitude and toughnes our players and coaches have now GO NINERS GOOD JOB MANANGEMENT / COACHES / AND SCOUTSS

  13. By seven years with Alex on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

my wish list stay away for alex smith and chilo rachel let em burn in the wind no good for our team and we would look like a bunch of bengals if we did sign em up again man how hard is it to watch a game and watch these 2 blow play after play sounds harsh yes but i mean how long must this …used to be proud organization tread in the mediocre pool stop sign ing mediocre guys …and stop settleing for them look ahead not back …simple if you really think about it

I don’t get all these Alex Smith haters he had a Pro Bowl year this year yeah he didn’t throw for 4000 yards but he did exactly what he was coached to do this year. He also threw 5 interceptions WTF thats awesome he made some great throws as well. You think Tom Brady does not over throw at times every QB does. Phillip Rivers went to the Pro Bowl this year only cause he threw for 4000 yards he threw a ton of Interceptions and led his team to a loosing season, You wanna tell me Alex is garbage compared to that. I was not a huge fan either and I wanted him gone as well but He is turning around because he has COACHES now that are offensive minded not defensive. !!!!!

  17. By rjdniner on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

ssgt diesil WE all want Alex to seceed , but being a hold out or not signing is not the way to gaine more fans,.. I am fed up with it :(

  18. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

looking at the teams drafting late in the 1st round rjd,, I would say we have a good chance to get him,,,

  19. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

need to get better on the O line,,and at safety and corner,,draft kirk cousins or even later for kellen moore,,

  20. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

but I really think we have a diamond in the rough with scott tolzein running the scout team,,,that kid can spin it!!!!

  21. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

there is really no reason for alex smith to not have signed his offer sheet already,,the guy is trying to get more guaranteed money cuz he knows that realisticly this is his last hurrah with the 49ers unless he takes us to the super bowl and wins it,,,harbaugh didnt draft kaepernick in the 2nd round to sit him behind alex smith he drafted him to take his job

  22. By SHIP on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

Jeromy, I think you confused to the difference between LOGICAL & EMOTIONAL. You are emotional…..like a little girl. Now lets be logical. You don’t quit a job emotionally without having a better one lined up. Who is to replace Alex if we just don’t sign him if we to WIN IT ALL THIS YEAR????

  23. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

in all honesty,,,if alex could do as well as he did,,whos to say matt flynn or even kaepernick couldnt do better? the point is,,,we have GOT to get better play from the QB spot,,,however we get it is my only real concern,,,

  24. By rjdniner on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

hey any body what the deal on this guy name leanard davis OL , I ll bet jim is hoping he can get him . the kid from standford Didnt wisc run the pro styl off , and let those two shoot it out .

  25. By rjdniner on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

talking about tolzin and collin .

  26. By jeromy on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

the point is that you are wasting time & energy of the coaches on a “never has been never will be” the same energy could go towards CK, & the other QBS we have. THERE IS NO WAY THEY WILL NOT DO BETTER THAN ALEX, HE IS IN A DREAM SITUATION FOR A QB(BEST DEFENSE IN LEAGUE & BEST SPECIAL TEAMS) AND HE WANTS TO BILK THE NINERS OUTTA MORE $$, IF HE WAS A MAN AT ALL HE WOULD TAKE A ONE YEAR DEAL WITH INCENTIVES AND PROVE HIMSELF, THEN MAYBE HE WOULD WARRANT A LONG LUCRATIVE CONTRACT

  27. By seven years with Alex on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

thanks for not just slapping down my real simple observations of a QB with no talents for the NFL…and thats what it burns down to this is the NFL there is no time …8 years …..realll…..to wait for a QB to wake up it was a wrong fit from the get go and he being a QB should realize that and take the oportunity to persue other teams. he never will fit a west coast style ….plain and simple and to keep signing him in hopes that maybe he will ….lol i dont even know what you guys are expecting from him really let me know and i guarantee he will not live up to any of them …it is nothing personal it has been 8 years and the best he could do with a monster defense getting an average of 2- 3 turnovers a game was to waste away at the end of a game that he easily could have and should have taken over if he really truly was as good as you say he was …..

  28. By seven years with Alex on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

oh and hmmmm….no alex was not on the probowl roster so yeah cant say he had a probowl year …really if so dont you think someone would have made him an offer by now if his numbers meant anything …dont you think he would have been signed by now the guy is torched and he doesnt even know it …best of luck alex on your endevors and if you happen to somehow wow the niners and your fans with your words and not skill of course ….then i pre-apologize for the screaming and cursing that will be heard around the greater bay area

49er FAITHFUL….What the heck were you saying about getting better at Safety??? WE have the Best Safety DUO in the NFL lol…. As far as Smith Goes peopleeee must understand we are not HATERS we are REALISTS….Get the Saints game out of your minds it was absolutely great and I loved every minute of it and ALEX I THANK YOU SO MUCH…However there is a reason why our REDZONE offense was awful and I think it was the worst in the NFL if not very close…That falls on the QB we do not want AKERS breaking anymore records thank you very much…I hope Harbaugh has something up his sleeve because i am worrying about this O-LIne and WR position everyone is signing elsewhere I hope we are not scared to spend the money

  32. By NINERSS ALL DAYYY on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

Oh and I hope nobody is thinking Moss is the answer at receiver….Hes 35 and did not play last year at all…he may be a down field threat but that was with Culpepper and Brady not Smith…Smith does not throw a good deep ball… Moss was a very nice sign but not the only one we need…Really hope we can grab wallace…Manningham Idk i feel he is another Crabtree a very good 3 receiver but cant be a #1 and we still need a #1 receiver

  33. By missouri 9er on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

I heard Alex was wanting more years on his contract not more money. Alex may not be the best QB in the league but he has shown some character and loyalty to this team, while taking a few steps forward in his game. I’m interested in seeing how or if he can take it to the next level with a full off season ( if he signs ). So far Harbaugh and Co. has shown very good ability in building a team, I hope and trust it will continue this year. GO NINERS!!!!

  34. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 16, 2012 | Reply

@ NINERSS ALL DAYY,,we need depth at safety is what I mean,,there is no one behind goldson,,,UFA,,next year,,,whitner,,,free agent next year,,,with no depth behind them,,we therefore need to upgrade the posistion,,,through the draft

  35. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 16, 2012 | Reply

and dont start talking about slow as a turtle reggie smith at safety please,,,

  36. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 16, 2012 | Reply

whitner is a beast at helping stop the run,,,but his struggles covering TE’S is well documented,,,one of the reasons buffalo decided not to offer him a counter offer to the 49ers,,,why else do you think we kept seeing P.WILLIS trying to cover TE’S on crossing routes outside the LB box,,,where whitner dwells,,,dude is a beast against the run,,,DONT GET ME WRONG,,,I LOVE WHAT WHITNER HAS DONE FOR US,,,but with no depth behind either SS or FS,,,we need to address that in the upcoming draft

  37. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 16, 2012 | Reply

but I do agree with you about moss,,,we cant realisticly expect moss to blow it up like he used to,,,,BESIDE WE STILL GOT MR INCONSISTENT at QB,,alex has NEVER been very good at throwing the long ball

  40. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 16, 2012 | Reply

davis was signed by AZ,,started at LT, and struggle badly,,,he was traded to dallas who plugged him in at left guard and its been pro bowl after pro bowl for dude

  41. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 16, 2012 | Reply

I meant he was drafted by AZ

  42. By tony hallerman on Mar 16, 2012 | Reply

get off alex smiths back he did take us to the playoffs just need to throw deeper throws if he doesn’t get us to the superbowl this year then consider having him replaced, go 9ers,

  43. By rjdniner on Mar 16, 2012 | Reply

faithful . So this guy LEANARD is a roadgrader someone that Gore can get behind to get 5 to 7 yrs per carriey thats what we need , GORE also .

  44. By rjdniner on Mar 16, 2012 | Reply

To say that Alex got us back to the playoff ? then why didnt it happen the year before ? Harbough got Alex strighten out and now hes doing this.

  45. By 49ER FAITHFUL on Mar 16, 2012 | Reply

ya rjd,,,gore really needs him,,but I am hoping kendall can become an every down back cuz’ I dont think frankie has got much more in the tank,,last 3 seasons frankie has been hurt ALOT and has missed alot of games,,,nolan and singletary ran him into the ground for 7 years,,7 losing years I might add,,hope he can stay healthy this year,,,

After such a fantastic season last year, to such a humbling finish, I believe the 49ers have finally woken up and smelled the coffee! I smell a little more fire and a determination that this team has been lacking, Thay are FINE TUNING!!! They been to the NFC Championship Game, they will want to go back even STRONGER! Thank you COACH! THANK YOU TEAM! And for the newest acquisitions to the team, WELCOME TO THE CITY BY THE BAY!!! I think it’s going to be a VERY SUPER YEAR this coming season! Very ineresting pickups I must say, it has been a long time since we had anything close to a RICE and TAYLOR combination at the receiver position, and 3 and 4 wide out sets is going to be VERY INTERESTING! Would you not agree! By the way, how come so late with the news that “Manning just happen to drop by on Tuesday” and I didn’t know this until today? O.K. maybe just a little dreamin there, but that would be totally unreal!!! GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!

  48. By Kevtop49ersfan on Mar 19, 2012 | Reply

They should keep Alex Smith he didnt lose games for us. We needed a deep threat, and now we have manningham and moss an a running game. Yall kno our defense is gon only get better ! We are definitely Super Bowl bound baby !! Oh yeah, Peyton Manning is gon wish he signed with us ! I’m salty bout him not coming here. Oh well !!
