Morning Tailgate: March 14

Posted by Taylor Price on March 14, 2012 – 10:26 AM

March Madness is officially underway.

The NCAA tournament’s play-in games have begun so the previous statement is technically correct. But in the NFL world, the phrase applies to the opening day of the NFL’s 2012 free agency period where several teams welcomed in new players, including the San Francisco 49ers.

In total, 532 players hit the market with the right to negotiate with 32 clubs.

The 49ers added one of those 532 by signing cornerback Perrish Cox to a two-year contract to start the day. The team later re-signed linebacker Tavares Gooden to a two-year contract as well.

But before we dive into the top headlines from the first day of free agency, there’s also a special voting tournament taking place on NFL.com that 49ers Faithful will certainly want to know about.

More on free agency and the NFL’s tournament after the jump.

This year, NFL.com is offering fans the chance to determine the greatest team in NFL history. With 64 all-time teams included in the field, the 49ers are represented by six of their own teams: ’81,’84, ’88, ’89, ’90, and ’94. First round voting concludes March 15 at 2 p.m. PT.

One of the players largely responsible for many 49ers teams making the tournament, Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice, was recently named as the greatest draft pick in the No. 16 slot in NFL Draft history by SI.com.

Now on to free agency news where the Chicago Bears made two moves that directly affected the 49ers. First, the Bears traded a pair of third-round picks to acquire Pro Bowl MVP wide receiver Brandon Marshall from the Miami Dolphins. Later in the day, Chicago signed linebacker Blake Costanzo away from the 49ers to a two-year deal. The Bears and Dolphins are scheduled to visit the 49ers at Candlestick Park in the 2012 regular season.

Wide receiver Joshua Morgan also has left the 49ers in free agency after signing a two-year contract with the Washington Redskins according to ProFootballTalk.com.

With moves across the league continue to happen throughout the day, all the free agency movement is being tracked by ProFootballFocus.com.

Joe Staley continues his European vacation.

I said last summer that Alex would shine last season in a way he had yet to ever do…now, with actually having a second year w/ the same off. coord., otas and mini-camps, I think that Alex will show that, like Eli, he too is “elite”!!

  5. By robert on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

sign alex please coach and mr york…..he is still a very young man coming into the form of an elite style qb……5 picks all season….with a little more help in the reciever position he would have thrown at least 29 td’s…..go r moss i know u still have it and crabs is getting better every season…..and davis can’t do it all….there is no tight end better in this league…..he could be a wide reciever with that speed…..go 9ers…..this and years to come are ours to take….god bless all you true niner fans…i’ve been one since the day i was born and dad made sure of that…god rest his soul….he likes what he’s been seeing from above….him and my brother dave……ha also isn’t here to watch but has the best seat in the house…red and gold baby…red and gold

Alex proved alot to me this past season, I agree that we resign him and keep working on weapons for him.

So far we have Moss and Davis. Crabtree sucks and needs to be traded for someone who can catch the ball. We lost josh morgan, and teddy ginn is a free agent. Who are we going to have returning kicks? Kyle Williams? I sure hope not.

Like I said, keep alex, and grab 1 more clutch receiver and we’ll be in the superbowl!

ALEX LETS SIGN THIS CONTRACT AND GO TAKE WHAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE OURS LAST YEAR . THIS IS THE BEST POSITION WEVE BEEN IN IN A LONG TIME. If your a true 49ER fan you would have to be like me . CLIMBING THE WALLS WANTING TO KICK THE SEASON OFF . GOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS.

wow again really alex has been on the board and not one call not any broadcaster saying hey alex smith is still there he isnt even on the top 20 board and or the top of the QB board he is getting less press than tebow….the league has by all means showed how valuable and or skilled alex is ..he is not the only reason he is not signed yet is because his agent has somehow put delusions of grandjure in his head that he is any thing but a below average QB …that was carried by a fenominal defense and special team effort that no one saw comeing …that being said it will only get harder for any QB we have now that the cat is out of the bag and believe me alex is and should be off our roster if we are to succeed

  9. By jeromy on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

hey 7 yrs, Alex has been a free agent for two days now, do you know how many teams have tried to woo him away from us?
ya basically he has been getting the same type of treatment as peyton, you know with him visiting several different cities & having all kinds of suitors.

no wait, ya nobody cares, you are right

is 19 million enough for 1 year deal with Peyton??

  10. By seven years with Alex on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

sign alex what he is the worst of the worst on the board and you want our team to sign the worst QB on the board shame on you for that one …alex has not one phone call from any team and not even rated in the top 20 freeagents and you want to sign him you my friend are why we havent seen a superbowl in almost 2 decades …sign the worst QB in freeagency lol sad that i even had to read that

  11. By jeromy on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

If he was a keeper, he would have been kept, long before free agency ever started. so quit begging for a has been & hope for the future of this team

Seven Years & Jeromy…you do realize there is much more going on with the team than just the QB position? You need to take a break…we get it, you don’t like ALEX. Your postings are tired and played out whether you pro Alex or not. Seriously, get a life!

  13. By seven years with Alex on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

yeah the team is trying to put the pieces together to win a superbowl ….and yes signing the worst QB on the board is plain ignorant…that is what we are saying just as you are saying ….oh alex we love you you are a super star the world revolves around alex …..wake up and read the paper read the wire watcfh the pros and or coaches who have no desire at all to even bring up his name as a QB for their team to win and give it a break nope not as long as i see people posting things that will hurt our team from winning…….the niners used to be proud now with the 8 year bust we are worse than the rams pick up your heads and walk toward the light of day and root for a good QB to be gotten not a hack at the bottom of the board

this used to be a pretty good board, but the alex haters have dominated with absurd and the dumbest things any football person could handle. you need to get a life and relieze that this is a team sport. is alex the best no but he is by far better than anything out there now.I almost hope he moves on then next year it will be wow wish we had alex. being a season ticket holder since kezar weve had good QB and bad even Joe and steve didnt walk on water and win every game.
I would think maybe free agent discusoin around punt return, O line, D line and another WR some one that the opposition would have to cover in the red zone with something other then a line backer, moss does help that area.

well said 7 yrs. on a side note, Ginn visited the Lions today, if he is healthy we need to keep him, the fied position he provided for us was crucial all year until he was hurt. K. Williams does have something to make up for(SUPERBOWL) so maybe he will play extra hard this coming year, & atone. And we still need improvement on the offensive line, they have to do better at protecting the new QB

  19. By jeromy on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

nice, Carlos Rogers signed to a 4 year deal, now if we can pick up another”Aldon Smith” in the draft, thats gonna be a scary defense!!

  20. By detroitniner on Mar 14, 2012 | Reply

I just checked the free agent list, outside of manning who out there would have done a better job last year? Grossman, orton, mcnabb, dont think any of em and nothing out there for the future. Flynn? steps in for one game and had a great recieving corps CLUE great recieving corp. would it be nice to draft a young gun and develop of course thats football 101. but you have to play with what you have for now get a life and move on. your b1tchen isnt going to change anything and its getting old

Does anybody else realize that the only reason people think Alex was good last year is because his first SIX years were so terrible? He had a barely average season for a QB last season and all of a sudden the faithful are singing his praises?? Not me. When he finally has a good season I will praise him, but until that time he has done NOTHING to impress me yet. We made it to the championship last year because of our defense. Get us a good QB and we will win the Superbowl!

Not sure where you getting all that!!! Its not BLACK & WHITE. Nice work, kissing Seven Years @ss Jeromy. But we also NOT saying he is as terrible as you 2 fools are saying. We are saying he presently gives us the best chance of winning it ALL next year. If not him, then who idiots, who??????? I swear you two are the biggest clowns on these blogs who want to be right more than you want us to win.

WHO YOU ASK ANYONE HE IS THE LOWEST ON THE BOARD…NO ONE WANTS HIM…..YOU ARE TELLING ME AS A FAN YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR TEAM TO SIGN A 8 YEAR BUST THAT IS THE LOWEST ON THE freeagent board …..then why draft anyone for any money lets just sit ar0ound and get all the lowest players on the boards and make the best of it …do you hear yourself he is our best shot …how is that possible he is 8 years in the league tell me what skills does he have …come on step up and shut me up what skills does he have …..none right so any Qb with a good arm and good mechanics would be better than alex they dont even have to do much just throw the ball down field and try to win games and at least look like he is trying instead of throwing the ball in the ground several times in the playoff game to put us in the superbowl he had his shot that was the best he will ever be and it was average at best and yes anyone else even yes flynn would be better just watching the 2 games he throws with better touch and releases well and fast and is accurate off his back foot and has good velocity …alll things that place him higher than alex …teams will be calling for flynn to come to their team ….not any team is calling alex not even you guys are calling alex he is in thye wind for a reason he blows and he is shooting himself in the foot by refuseing to sign because the niners are the only team stupid enough to sign himand start him ….nuff said …prove me wrong

He flynn had Rodgers recivers to throw to ,Alex is blowing it, He thinks one good year he s worth the big bucks I want to watch him have a good year. This is not the way to start .

  42. By kram on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

i’ve read alot of comments on alex, enough! he has wore out his welcome. coach had to hold his hand all year he still had trouble running the offense. after 7 years it’s time to try someone else, he is a backup at best. lets face it try kap. and draft cousins from mich. st. coach can hold there hands thru the offense this year. u see what the jets did with sanchez first two years keep it simple and what dalton did for the bengals last year. if u surround your qb with a good rb and some recivers witch the niners have in place coach can call a good game using kap. this year with cousins backup guy is real deal.

  43. By seven years with Alex on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

lol you all think he is a superstaR AND then panic when he acts like one …he is hangin his own neck by believeing you guys ….but no worries not 1 team wants him on their team ….accept for the niners they will give him what ever he wants …why i dont know and still dont know why they have such a facination for a guy who has not done anything accept for take their money and give very little in return after this display of foolishness on his part i still am smashing my head as to why they would still sign the lowest ranked QB in the league again. its like watching the bengals or browns off season and wondering hey how stupid can you be

  44. By seven years with Alex on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

lol alex doenst think he is that good to be holding out he knows as well as you all have said that the niners have no other choice …even though they can take anyone else and have better outcome than signing the bust AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND WASTEING YEARS OF GOOD FOOTBALL players that have to wait and see if alex will ever get better than average or even figure out how to read defenses ……alex knows that the niners for what ever reason will hire him till the end of time because they for some reason believe that a no good QB that has sat here for 8 years is better than any other QB with real skills …..confounds even the pros as to why that is …..even the announcers are keeping off the subject of why the niners have to stick with a loser QB …..8 years and running as the joke of the league …..and no with the schedule next year you will see just how aweful he really is ….but no worries you will still make excuses for him as youve done for 8 years and running

  45. By jeromy on Mar 15, 2012 | Reply

http://youtu.be/a0WLP8vtUoM @1:55 of this video you will see Joe Montana throwing deep up the middle to a receiver that is covered by 4 defensive players,…..Steve Young nor even worst yet today’s Alex Smith could do this on a regular basis, and when he threw is was ALWAYS cool as ICE! I know because I seen it with my own eyes over and over again. Steve was good but he was always running for his life! That to me was a Elite QB! Until Alex or any other QB can achieve this then they are only good Elite knockoffs. I think this is why there is so much love/hate for Alex, to boot these guys are getting 50-60 Million dollars for it. Some might say,”Well there will never be another Joe Montana,….and they are right however, “Joe” set the standard and today’s QB should be a GREAT Elite knockoff. Let’s start with a better season on 3rd downs and redzone%. This is just my 2cents!
