Morning Tailgate: March 8

Posted by Taylor Price on March 8, 2012 – 10:34 AM

Some say it’s a gift, and some say it’s a curse.

But still, finding out which player will grace the cover of EA Sports’ Madden football video game remains a time honored tradition of the NFL offseason.

Some see it as a means to jinx yourself with a poor season or in some cases falling victim to injury. Others look at it as great recognition for a football player, his team and region of the country.

It just all depends on who you’re talking to.

This year, the folks at EA have taken it to a whole different level. Instead of fans voting on individual players in a bracket-style tournament like last year, they’re having fans vote between two players from each team first. Then, those selected 32 will take part in this year’s fan vote tournament.

Representing the 49ers is none other than five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis (who advanced to the final eight last year) and famed postseason tight end Vernon Davis, who probably won’t receive many votes from the Bayou but from many other places as he’ll be remembered for some time for his game-winning touchdown catch against the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Divisional Playoff round.

Find out how to vote for Willis/Davis (tough call, I know), the latest on the upcoming free agency season and more team news after the jump.

I wonder if Willis and Davis could move on in tandem. It seems like a duo on the cover of Madden would be well-received. But in any case, here’s the link to the Madden Play-In Round, maybe vote twice, once for each player to be safe.

With free agency set to begin on March 13, ESPN.com NFC West blogger Mike Sando offers a free agency primer for each team in the division, highlighting where the clubs stand and what to potentially expect for each team.

ProFootballFocus.com ranks their top 75 free agents, which includes 49ers Pro Bowl cornerback Carlos Rogers as the 13th-ranked player and third cornerback behind Cortland Finnegan of the Tennessee Titans and Brandon Carr of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Speaking of potential 49ers free agents, Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com writes there’s a strong possibility that wide receivers Ted Ginn Jr. and Joshua Morgan will test the free agent market next week.

Lastly, if you missed the latest player to be profiled in our #49in49 series, No. 47 on the list happened to be LSU wide receiver Rueben Randle who’s been slotted to the 49ers in numerous offseason mock drafts.

Cullyinthehouse… Chris Culliver sounds eager to get back to football.

Wow, that’s gonna be a tough choice. I’ll have to think about that one. I have nothing against Patrick Willis, but Vernon Davis made some really nice catches. Patrick Willis was also a force to be reckoned with. Tough tough choice.

I cant wait for the season to start…Im just a fan chopping at the bit..I can wait to see how free agency is going to go for us and the draft. I am hoping we get carlos and Alex back and then we are ready to complete the puzzle with a few new additions.. Let make it happen team…..

Alex will make a fine backup to Kaepernick.

  4. By crowebar on Mar 8, 2012 | Reply

What we need to do is grab Wayne, Garcon and Manning… We would be unstoppable and we have the cap space to do it.

  5. By crowebar on Mar 8, 2012 | Reply

Get rid of Alex. He isn’t needed and having Kaepernick learn under Manning for a few years would set him up nicely. We don’t need a project for Harbaugh, we need a QB and some solid receivers.

nnnooooo Alex did lose the game by not finishing the game instead he decided to throw the ball into the dirt time after time because he gave up and i sure dont want no quitter on our team he is a curse and needs to be gone…and by the way if he was any good last year …hmmm maybe they would have put him in the bidding for EA cover but no because everyone knows he is average and that will not change so say what you want every professional out there gives no credit to alex as a get it done Qb or even a above average QB …even dang tebow has more press than Alex he needs to seek out freeagency wich will net nothing but a back up job somewhere because we are the only team in the league that will start him and he knows it so he kisses but to stay here and play for subpar money because they allready gave him 100 million dollars for nothin …he just s wants to start and has the front office around his finger for what ever reason ….let him go on his way and find solace in the fact that his carreer came down to takeing 100million from the niners and putting up the worst career in 8 seasons ever seen …retire dude before it is too late and you get ran out of the league ….a la jeff garcia man add him to the mix and like 16 years of garbage QBing for the niners no wonder we are the laughing stock of the league and then we couldnt even set ourselves up right for a couple of real good QB’s coming out in draft now we have to watch indy ravage the league for another 14 years thanks for that again ..and again ….lol man what a waste of time on this QB and for nothin

Okay I love the NIner and I was one of the people last season who thought we had the pieces and the coach to do will last year from pre-season. BUT

The tru Manning got let go yesterday. They say he might go to the dolphins, chiefs, jets, seahawks.

I WANT HIM for my Niners. If he ends up on the seahawks team the Niners are screwed. Alex can’t score with him. He couldn’t even move the ball in the second have against the giants. if history comes to play again for Alex the last time he had a half decent year the next three were real bad and he made so much money. He had his year last year and I’m afraid the worse is coming again. And let’s face the truth nobody thinks he can win a superbowl. WE just hope pray and beg to the gods.
Why wouldn’t Manning want to come here. New stadium in a few years, great food. the best area in the world. We have the number one “D” in the NFL. We have a great players in all positions on the “O” team nad the biggest weakness is Alex. But the only player the Niners and York family are chasing is the Santa Clara.

York family if you ever want to be as popular as Previous owner find a way to get Peyton. And let’s win the next four superbowls while we have this talent under contract.
Alex had a great season but just didn’t get anything but three and outs all second half of NFC championship. No first downs. No chances for field goal attempts. He never moved the ball. I like alex but let’s get real if Peyton goes to the cards or seahawks can alex out score him.? Will we have any chance to win the dividson. Alex couldn’t beat the cards with warner. If they get Petyon…no dividson, maybe wildcard. Can alex keep up with him if he falls behind? NO we lost the division to a throwing quarterback. Why did we lose against the giants because in new york the “O” team is #1 and the ‘D’ team is number two. In SF the “D” is number 1 and the “O” team is number two. How many games did we lose or almost lose coz Alex can’t throw down field. Crabtree is just any o receiver with Alex…with Peyton he would be a league leader. If davis was being thrown to by Peyton he would crush the league. Let’s win the next four Superbowls in a row. Mortgage the franchise and get Peyton. Have some balls York family. PLEASE let’s win now!!!!!!!!!!

LOOK HE DID GREAT WITH LITTLE TIME TO LEARN PLAYBOOK.DIDNT HURT THE TEAM W/TRYING TO DO TOO MUCH.WOW OUR TEAM IS REALLY STRONG IN ALL AREAS. JUST THINK FOR THE 1ST TIME IN 10 YEARS WE ARE DRAFTING PLAYERS TO COME OFF SIDELINES AND STILL BE STRONG EVEN 3 DEEP .MAN ITS GONNA BE GREAT .WE ARE BACK .

Im with sin sd9er whom ever the QB is im down for the niners. We did a great job last year with very little offseason. Imagine this year we will be the top best in the NFL. Now if you add Peyton Manning and a few good receivers we will be the best. We will win we are the Niners its our time again.

Some people on here make football decisions like kids. Ooooh its Peyton Manning, “we have to get him”. Really??? Getting Peyton will set us back more than it will help. LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE. Thank GOD we have Harbaugh & Baalke because they get it. There is a reason why we are not persuing.

Really???? you guys want an old QB with a wimpy arm and fused neck bones?
I can’t believe I am reading what you say!!! Even the sports writers are saying Manning is a unknown entity right now…not sure that he is back to his former strength in that arm…and it may NEVER come back with the fused neck bone restrictions.

Why would you want someone who will be over his prime playing years (and may even have reached that now) in a few years….he’s 36 years old, for heaven’s sake.
The defense on some teams will eat him up and spit him out. He hasn’t even played for a whole a year….. and he doesn’t know our system.

  16. By Kyle on Mar 8, 2012 | Reply

Its done. Manning will be a Niner and a new Dynasty begins. With all the room in cap, the niners won’t need a single weapon in addition to acquiring Manning. Crab, Gore, Davis, Hunter, Morgan (resigned) + a WR in first round… We will instantly become the most feared team in the NFL. Besides, having Kap learn with Manning would be a great investment to mix his athleticism with mannings awareness.

Manning wants to win, his time is running out. He wants to shove a super bowl victory into the faces of colts owners.
The niners is his best chance at a superbowl, means he’ll accept a more lenient contract. Which means we still might find a star wide out in Free Agency.
It will take a few minutes to adjust once it goes public. but….

  17. By Ladybug on Mar 8, 2012 | Reply

Wait a minute Kyle…are you serious? Why would you want Manning? Think about it. The Colts let him go….why? What did they see in his workouts that told them he was finished there? What do the team docs know concerning his weak arm, and his fused neck bones?????

If there was any chance that Manning was at full strength and health, do you think the Colts would have let him go? No…they wouldn’t have. Quick as a bunny they would have signed him up….but they didn’t and big question is why.

All you NINER haters are cut, waived and not recognized as true fans. My NINERS went 13 and 3 and went to overtime in the championship game. I am proud of my team, every single player on the team, kinda sounds like you NINER haters never played organized ball the way you place blame on one or two guys. Alex Smith will be signed by Monday so deal with it. V. Jackson or R Meachem will be signed by my NINERS by next Friday.

As good as Manning has been in the NFL, I honestly think he is a bad fit for Harbaughs system. Harbaugh relies on a mobile quaterback, which at this stage of his career Manning is not. Manning is the smartest quaterback in the NFL if not the smartest player, it would be a significant risk signing him, instead of shoring up some potential free agents. 2 years ago I would have said sign him right away, now I dont see it being a good fit. I would re-sign Alex with the notion that he will have to compete with Kaepernick for the starting job. Kaepernick has such a strong arm and is mobile, he deserves a shot. Alex has done great in Harbaughs system, and he might still do great this coming year, but there are other issues that should be addressed, like signing a wide receiver, corner back, and offensive guard, before taking a risk on a injured but good quaterback late late in his career.

I have a hard time thinking you can be ready to do away with our QB. Put it to rest. Alex does agood job, when surrounded. With quality coaching and awesome players witch wehave e envenon giants 49ER GAME sure afew mistakes but nothing we didn’t over come. The Rsfsr screwed the pooch!! 4th qter2min on the clock we had the turn over and the whisper not blown until we recovered the ball on thair.20!!!!! Should have been game over. No over time. Punch it up on you tube!!! They explain it and show you the video Prof

  24. By jeromy on Mar 9, 2012 | Reply

believe it Rocky, the point is that if Alex would have done anything but choke the game would have been out of reach for the giants. And with the Saints, our defense got 5 turnovers, that game should have also been a blowout. See its a domino effect, when our offense scores & our defense is dominant it forces other teams to get crazy to catch up & thats when our defense should really shine, the sad thing is with Alex, he puts no pressure on the other teams offense/or defense

  26. By Kyle on Mar 9, 2012 | Reply

@Ladybug The NFL is a business and Smith still hasn’t accepted the current deal on table. The colts let him go because Manning was due 28 mil in a bonus. The colts need that cap room to make other moves improving their team. Why spend that on a teacher for luck? They are drafting Luck.
Both Manning and Smith have the same agent, and Balke won’t sign Manning if he doesn’t workout.
Statistically speaking, Smith was DUE for a good year last year. What if it was the only one he’ll ever have? Balke will determine this and make the best move.

Also remember, we might not get manning or SMith.
If that happens Kaep will still take us to the superbowl.
    In essence it doesnt matter.

To all the Alex Haters, this is the fact…Joe montana and steve young were some of the greatest QB’s im sure we all agree..The fact is that Joe Montana was very inacurate and very slow in his running. What made him great was the players around him, this is a team sport and you cant peg one person. Alex has been acurate and inacurate at times, however in those moments of inacuracy its up to the reciever to make a play on the ball…The fact that you blame Alex for not being accurate is completely ignorant. Great Qb’s are not always acurate, they thow the ball in an area they hope the reciever will get to, that is the fact.. Alex just needs to learn that area, he is very caucious of his throws because he dont want to get pickede, but at the same time he need to have a receiver he can trust to make the catch that will not always be on the money. 49er4life!!!!!!!!!!

get Manning, really? 14 years 1 SB win. So then Alex has a few years to catch up? ALL great QB have GREAT WR’s don’t believe me? Who were Joe and Steve throwing too, got it? I doubt it!
Alex finish the season with Crab, and a wounded Walker.
And Walker played better,, don’t you guys get it.
Rice, Taylor, Wilson, Clark, Freddie, how does Crabtree compare?

all you haters move on, many here keep asking you to do just that so do it, because you are not going to be happy, ALEX SMITH is our QB.
