Morning Tailgate: March 5

Posted by Taylor Price on March 5, 2012 – 10:35 AM

Jim Harbaugh continues to receive praise for a strong showing in 2011.

The NFL Coach of the Year was honored twice over the weekend, first by being co-honored as the Golden Heart Award winner at the 2012 Athletes First Classic Gala along with Vizio CEO William Wang. Later, Harbaugh was honored as the NFC Coach of the Year at the 101 Awards, Kansas City’s salute to professional football.

Harbaugh was first honored at the St. Regis Resort at Monarch Beach and later in the weekend at the 101 Awards, a civic event which has 101 members of the national media select its honorees.

More 49ers headlines from the first weekend of March can be found after the jump.

Pre-draft buildup for the 49ers continues as Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com and Wes Bunting of the National Football Post discuss the team’s potential needs in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Recently re-signed 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks continued to shed light on his emergence in San Francisco when speaking with KNBR radio host Rod Brooks. Said Ahmad Brooks on his ascent with the 49ers: “It was kind of a blessing in disguise to be picked up by the San Francisco 49ers and to still be getting paid as if I were playing every week, and just being able to get back on track as a football player.”

With Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson reportedly agreeing on a five-year extension to stay with Buffalo, Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee sees this year’s list of free agent wide receivers beginning to shrink. Barrows discusses who’s left to hit free agency.

49ers Pro Bowl safety Dashon Goldson commented humbly over the weekend on being the recipient of San Francisco’s non-exclusive franchise tag.

I just you tubed Golson’s WHALLOP of a hit against TB. It was perfect. I watched every game, if Dashon works on his pursuit angle to route runners and stays more disciplined against play action, keeps up his flawless ball hawk ability and continues to bring the wood with Whitner; it won’t be long until we are mentioning another name along references to Ronnie Lott.
The post by Fitzgerald last year still urks me, lol (pursuit angle). But trust, him and every other receiver will be scared to run it after watching film on Goldson.
