Morning Tailgate: Feb. 29

Posted by Taylor Price on February 29, 2012 – 10:16 AM

Leap day here at the Morning Tailgate happens to cover a lot of leaping from the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine.

With the league’s annual pre-draft audition officially over, we’ve compiled analysis on who hurt and helped their draft stock with their respective performances in Indianapolis.

Meanwhile, the Bay Area is buzzing over the six-year contract extension given to outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks, who’s coming off a career-year where he posted 7.0 sacks and 59 tackles in his first year as a full-time starter.

We spoke with Brooks exclusively about his continued progress on and off the field. TV49’s Scott Kegley sat down with Brooks as well to discuss his outlook on his future with the 49ers.

More on Brooks, combine highlights and other team news can be found after the jump.
CSNBayArea.com’s Matt Maiocco offers his thoughts on the Brooks signing, which he sees as a sign of confidence from the organziation in the 27-year-old pass-rushing linebacker.

The other Matt on the 49ers beat, Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee, recaps Brooks’ conference call with the Bay Area media. Brooks told the group: “I feel this is where I should be.”

On to the combine news, ESPN NFC West blogger Mike Sando recaps the most intriguing measurements from the combine, ranging from the best 40-yard dash to the worst vertical jump.

Doug Farrar of Yahoo!’s Shutdown Corner blog offers his thoughts on the 10 players who helped their draft stock in Indianapolis, and the 10 players who hurt their stock.

What would a combine be without seeing the annual, “Rich Eisen 40-yard dash?” The NFL Network anchor came up short on his quest to run under 6.0 seconds, but still found a way to entertain the masses.

Lastly, former 49ers President Carmen Policy gave support to the 49ers new stadium in Santa Clara as well as the team’s front office when speaking to The San Jose Mercury News. Policy: “I would venture to say that Santa Clara probably got the best deal any community’s ever gotten from an NFL franchise.”

Keeping the front 7 intact is huge…Ahmad showed more of his capabilities as a full-time starter last season. With an entire off-season for Coach Fangio to install the full defense, there’s no telling how good Brooks can be. The relationship he has w/Ray Mac is great…we’re set on our left side for years.

As for Rogers, he won’t be cheap to retain. But, I think it’s good strategy to let him test the waters…not sure that many teams are willing to pay a 31-yr old CB that much, but we’ll see. Baalke knows he has Culliver waiting in the wings, so that’s a good position to be in…and for a lot less money. That could mean they’ll look for CB early in the draft…but, at least they won’t need to address OLB then. They may draft for depth, but that’s also a good position to be in.

First off, I’d like to say congrats to the 49ers on a great season. Also I’d like to give a HUGE congrats to Brooks for his outstanding effort all season. Your never quit, never give up way is why this paid off for both the 49ers and yourself. When the news broke the other day about signing Brooks, the rest of the NFL teams were shaking in their boots. 49ers D will be back and at it again next year. Once again, thanks for a great year. Now go get Marvin Mcnutt. He has great hands and he works hard for his team. Would fit right in to what coach is trying to do. Go 49ers and go Hawkeyes!
