Morning Tailgate: Feb. 10

Posted by Taylor Price on February 10, 2012 – 10:25 AM

You know you’re in the offseason when the 49ers are making headlines on a golf course. But such is the case this week with Thursday’s opening round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am involving Jim Harbaugh as a participant and quarterback Alex Smith serving as the coach’s caddy.

In case you missed it, TV49 provided the sights and sounds from the 49ers-Giants Charity Golf Shootout which took place earlier in the week. Dwight Clark’s par-saving putt on the 18th hole is especially memorable with Clark being mic’d up for the final hole. We also posted our special teams review of the 2011 season, praising the achievements of the group which broke several league records under coordinator Brad Seely.

Now on to the top 49ers headlines in print, online and social media…

Back to golf, Chris Chase of Yahoo! Sports’ Shutdown Corner Blog offers photos and a recap of the coach-quarterback duo’s outing at Spyglass Hill Golf Course on Thursday. Smith followed suit with his on-course duties, raking bunkers and giving putting reads to his head coach.

San Francisco Chronicle columnist Scott Ostler offers this humorous account of “Par-baugh’s” outing with Smith. After the round, the 49ers coach gave an interview in which he revealed to Ostler that his sixth child is due on Sept. 6. “There’s a scoop,” the 49ers coach said.

In football news, AP sports writer Janie McCauley spoke with free-agent-to-be wide receiver Joshua Morgan, who is eager to return to the field after suffering a season-ending leg injury in a Week 5 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Morgan, 26, is now sprinting full-speed and figures to be ready for his fifth NFL season.

When you’re an All-Pro linebacker who covers a lot of ground like NaVorro Bowman, taking care of your feet in the offseason seems like the prudent thing to do.

Alex proved to me this year that he is ready to be our leader. Give him a big play receiver and keep our defense and offensive line strong, and we’ll be back soon enough.

I think we should trade up and snag Justin Blackmon from Oklahoma State, he is sick nasty!

well alex smith is good enough to get us to the superbowl he needs a good WR……. and keep our d together and we will be ever better then last year give him some weapons and just see what he does if not get payton and still keep our d and we will be heading to the superbowl cuz payton does not have to be the old payton he doesnt have to carry the team like he does he never have a good running game and a good d like ours he makes everyone better 49er 4 life

Well alex did play average and had several memebers of the team save games…most of our games had 3 -5 turn overs and we barely won by 3 or by 1 and the defense had to stop the last drive by makeing a play …something that alex lacks tremendously. Alex left us with more questions than answers ounce again he still wont throw the ball consistantly and lacks any NFL QB finesses or gamesmanship every year he looks like a rookie bust and every year he does the same thing …nothing …2011 wa the same we just played a couple more games and alex got lucky that the saints went man coverage on vernon so we could go down and score …sad really that it appeared alex was showing us something yet again its same old alex shortcomeing ..always a bust and never a superbowl winner

I WANT THE niners staff to keep all the players they have now. In the draft this year we need a WR period! look at the 49ers that won all the super bowls for us. that team had the best WR ever JERRY RICE< All alex smith needs is a WR, Period. Are D is the best it has ever been in years. KEEP THEM ALL TOGETHER LET THEM HAVE A FULL OFFSEASON, LOOK WHAT THEY DID THIS YEAR WITH NO OFF SEASON, JIM IS THE MAN!!!!!!! LOVE MY TEAM TILL I DIE……………………….NUMBER ONE FAN CAPUCHINO

and now that freeagency is here we are going to lose all but one of our 1 year guys …rodgers will be too expensive maybe minter will stay but yeah wont be the same defense out there unless there is some serious moneyb spread around our secondary will look like swiss cheese alex had his shot with the best defense behind him and failed. bid him farewell and let some other team waste time and effort and money and players to the black hole of QBing

Let the haters, hate. You downing a guy who had is best stasitcial year, has a coach that believes he’s a winner, and you want to get rid of him and move on? I often wonder when people down Alex Smith if they are even 49ers fans. When we drafted him we had no O line, Offensive waspons for him and A “D” that made him play from behind alot of times. If Vernon, WIllis, and Gore believe in Smith along with the coach why shouldn’t we? I mean let put blame where it’s due……..Crabtree was lost in the NFC championship, had problems with Vernon and Alex. And hasn’t done of full schedule of OTA’s since we drafted him. I was happy in that draft when he fell to us, but def. a disappointment(Except he started to come on late in the season) and for not having a down the field target except Vernon I think Alex did a good job.

  11. By seven years in S.F. on Feb 11, 2012 | Reply

Blah blah blah excuses for alex …its the same o line accept for lupati who is a run guy and snyder who is a good guard same line since he started he gets no better every year and you say he is well after now 8 years he might be getting better and based on your analogy of he needs this he needs that ..lets look at what he has brought to the table ……injuries …no concept for the NFL …ie you say he needs to have a coordinator more than one year …why do you think they leave …simmer on that for a bit ….he has no will to be better in games ….I hear he practices well lol…..he does not bring any talent besides maybe running …and yet he is a QB who is suposed to get things done by throwing the ball….he is suposed to be after 8 years be able to throw for more than one Td a game average through the year …no he went 17 TD’s for 18 games average …so yeah no much in the way of helping out a team after they waitied 8 years and 100 million dollars wich is some of your funds from buying murchandise to hot dogs at games to even watching the game on tv ( advertisements) all this and yeah wooot for alex he is draining this team and hopefully they allow him to pursue freeagency with out wasteing more money on him because as you say we need to spend more money on other things …remeber you said we need to get a better line and WR’s and DB’s so how does spending 45 million dollars more on a 8 year maybe fit in to haveing to spend another 30-50 million on good enough personel to maybe make him better wich it wont trust me

Crabtree and Alex Smith are both disappointing, especially for high draft choices. Harbaugh and the FO did a great job this year with picking rookies. The only notable one not tested was CK. If he is as good as the other 2011 draftees, we may have a new QB next season. Alex may be a good back up.
We get a new WR and Ginn/Williams (yes Williams) back and we can make some noise. Hopefully, we also sign our free agents and keep the team relatively intact. Aldon, Patrick, Justin, Bowman, and Goldson are only going to get better.

Hi, guys I hope you don’t hate me for choosing the Niners as my team this year. This is my first time watching football and the Niners are awesome!!! The QB is really good, Alex Smith. I hope he stays a Niner for a long time to come. And also that crazy defense haha.

  15. By Joseph on Feb 11, 2012 | Reply

Can we agree to trade Crabtree first.. He is a, Braylon Edwards Diva with value for awesome trade, and possibly a draft. And manning would be pretty shweet. If we make that move, we can keep Alex as a backup.

  16. By richard reyes on Feb 11, 2012 | Reply

We would have been in the super bowl if a certain #10 hadn’t played so good for the g-man no not manning,’ williams’ so all you morons get off Alex’s back our coach believes in him and that’s good enough 4 me. He need it the right coaching and now he has it, it doesn’t matter how you win , not to borrow the saying from those guys across the bay but ‘jes’ win baby………………………..13 and 3 and a play away from the super and it’s all Alex’s fault??? you WHINERS!!!!!!

i think the niners need to try and sign deshawn jackson so that teams cant bracket cover vernon davis . it would keep that safty deep in the back field and give vernon a lot more one on one chances. plus that safty cant come up in the box with deshawn on the outside because u cant leave no corner one on one with deshawn and that speed and it would help the run because because the safty got to stay home cant come up because of the home run threat.

jackson is also out there SID it would be nice to land one of them .

The only reason Smith wants to stay with us is because we have one of the top defenses. That way, they can hide all of his mistakes. People thought that Aaron Rodgers wouldn’t play as good in the NFL, totally opposite. Alex Smith did though.

Poor little Jeromy not had his nap today? Go to sleep little fella Coach Harbaugh will make it all better in the off season..LOL……. 49ERS ROCK!!!

rjdniner i think we have 30 million in cap space which is good but we need to secure Rogers and Goldson and of course we need a big wide out to help Morgan.

I am sure Seven Years will help him fulfill his emotional and physical needs. Dude…putting in more exclamation points don’t make your weak 500 points any stronger & valid. You really need to get a life. You must be on all these blogs blaming Alex for everything from your sucky life to your lack of intelligence. Did a dude that looks like Alex bully you in school or something? Geeez..get a life!

So now you realize that with cap issues to come you cant sign everyone especially a 7 year no one who only accomplished helping the kicker break records. The team will not be the same …our schedule is horrible and over loaded i believe and yet some still think after all this time alex finally can take us somewhere other than blowing the championship game. only one 3rd down conversion in the game = lose. The giants watched the Ravens game and did the same thing to alex and he busted. We need new blood guys not the same old blood…please see that he is no good here and needs to seek freeagency and try to make it there….if we spend a bundle on him again we will lose really valuable players to accomidate a salary for a 8 year busted QB with little talent to comprehend a offense he has been in for 8 years ….yes every coach that came here played a version of the west coast offense accpet norve but he left too because they all … knew…. alex cant get it. he is not worth it to resign his time is past we need to move on or become the laughing stock of the league again as we throw all our money at a underachieveing QB with no skills.

  31. By UKniner on Feb 13, 2012 | Reply

From what i’ve seen, Smith has proven himself. Granted, he may not seem as talented a QB as the likes of Rodgers or Brees, but he doesn’t have the same offensive weapons. Let’s look to strengthen the O-Line, and get some dangerous WR’s, with that in place, there’s no reason why we can’t get to the SB!

I go there
i would be that guy . niners

  37. By Hugh Kizer on Feb 13, 2012 | Reply

It’s crazy how so many fans think they know more than the coaches. If you are all so smart why aren’t you coaching an NFL team? Let Harbaugh do his job. Last year Alex was the best chance we had to reach the playoffs. I am sure the Niners will be evaluating the QB position and will draft/acquire a QB if one becomes available that they think is better than Alex. We now have people in place that actually have a clue how to build a winning franchise. I for one can’t wait to see what comes next.

  38. By dave g. on Feb 13, 2012 | Reply

Agreed. Harbaugh and Baalke know what they are doing. Getting Peyton Manning would be a rediculous roll-of-the-dice & full of unneccesary drama & unrealistic expectations (see 2011 Eagles). We need healthy WR’s…we only had one healthy WR who was not a practice player on the roster in the final stretch for Gods sake & we got that close with one starting TE and one starting WR. Even Brady’s wife gets it BUT these Alex haters know diddly…YOU NEED HEALTHY STARTING WR’s for a QB to succeed…it’s not rocket science. Exhibit A: This last SuperBowl. Do you really think Eli just got better than Brady??? Eli has 3 great starting healthy recievers getting open and making catches! Hmmmm…I wonder why they beat us AND the Patriots {sarcasm}. Are the Patriots going to go after Peyton Manning now??? Geeez…learn football idiots (aka Seven Years & Jeromy)!

  39. By dave g. on Feb 13, 2012 | Reply

So let me get this straight, we are not watching these games on T.V. and are missing all the things that Seven Years & Jeromy is seeing????? We lack their keen football IQ, which forget the fact that Harbaugh and Baalke are seeing first hand, live in person AND ARE ALSO MISSING! It makes no difference that Josh Morgan was out, Braylon Edwards did not cut it, Ted Ginn was out, Delanie Walker had a broken jaw, Kyle Williams was suffering concussion like symptoms AND we had practice squad WR’s starting. Oh no, nevermind that. Do you suppose Alex was asked to play that style because Harbaugh knew we did not have a full arsenal of WR’s? Oh that could not be possible, because it gave us 13-3 record with the least turnovers? These 2 seem to think that with Peyton we would win 3-4 more SB’s with the same WR situation. I find your ignorance astonishing.HAHAHAHAHA

  40. By dave g. on Feb 13, 2012 | Reply

Alex is 28 years old and has never really had the WR’s and consistancy every other good QB has had. No one is saying he is Joe Montana and that we 100% sure that he will be great BUT the opportunities for him to thrive has not been there since he was drafted. He definately has the physical tools. NO DOUBT! Be it inadequate head coaches & inconsistance coordinators who did not know how to develop him or provide him great WR’s. Last year showed us the difference a great coach can make. Aside from Crabtree we have never drafted a top WR and even Crabtree has had issues holding on the ball and Morgan has had trouble staying healthy. Thats the final piece to help him reach his potential. Things look promising if we can reload on WR’s, then we can open up the Offense. BTW: Even Mike McCarthy saw something in Alex that made him favor Alex over Aaron in the 2005 NFL DRAFT…that should not be underestimated..Honestly..there has been sparks of greatness since he was drafted if you watch closely. Open your eyes and learn football and extract your emotional drama of just not liking guy. You two (jeromy and seven years) are like 2 little girls throwing a tamper tamdrums ;)

  41. By dave g. on Feb 13, 2012 | Reply

And Seven Years, if you really think that crap Jimmy Rae ran for a year and a half & Mike Johnson (yeah Mike who?) for a yeah was a version of the West Coast (aka Walsh Offense), Bill Walsh would punch you in the face. Oh yeah, lets not forget Mike Martz’s no protection and send everyone out offense??? Are you kidding Seven Years with saying we have been running a version of the west coat offense. Do you have nay idea what west coast offese is? You 2 keep showing your ignorance over an dover again? Its so dang funny! You losers are all over every blog with this ignorant rambling ; )
