Morning Tailgate: Feb. 9

Posted by Taylor Price on February 9, 2012 – 10:52 AM

As Jim Harbaugh and his PGA partner Ryan Moore go through their opening round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (beginning their tournament out at Spyglass Hill Golf Course), we’ve gathered the best online, print, and social media coverage of your San Francisco 49ers.

In case you missed our recap of the 49ers-Giants Charity Golf Shootout, the competitive juices were certainly alive and well for the 49ers coach, even on the links. With Alex Smith serving as his caddy for Thursday’s opening round of the Pro-Am, Harbaugh’s drive for success should be something to watch all weekend long if you happen to be in the area. The AP Coach of the Year said he wants to beat other football coaches in the field like Bill Belichick, Bob Stoops, Herm Edwards and Nick Saban.

In on the field news, CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reviewed NFL salary cap documents and estimates the 49ers will have around $30 million in cap space heading into the 2012 season. The 49ers group includes several key players (Alex Smith, Dashon Goldson, Carlos Rogers, Joshua Morgan, Ahmad Brooks, Adam Snyder, Ted Ginn Jr. chief among the group),  yet the 49ers will have sole negotiating rights with those players until the free agency period begins on March 13.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle summarizes Goldson’s Thursday morning radio appearance on 95.7 The Game, in which the Pro Bowl safety said he would be “shocked” if he wasn’t signed by the team. “I think those guys are excited about me being there and I’m sure they want me back,” Goldson said. “They’ve expressed how much they want me back. I want to be back there. Like I said, if I’m not there, I’d be shocked.”

In a recent post, ESPN.com’s Mike Sando passes along mock draft updates from ESPN draft insiders Mel Kiper and Todd McShay and throws in his two cents on who the 49ers should select No. 30 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft. Sando thinks the 49ers would be justified in selecting any position due to having a strong nucleus of players built by the team’s front office.

Lastly, the official @49ers Twitter account shared a Tout video this morning, one that displayed some of the latest Santa Clara New Stadium make-ready work taking place outside of team headquarters. More than two miles of pipes have been installed around the facility in Santa Clara.

Vernon Davis for President? Maybe one day. For now, the 49ers tight end continues to diversify his off the field portfolio as evidenced by his tweet this morning.

SORRY 4 THE CAPS BUT I HAVE VERY BAD EYES. WE HAVE TO KEEP TGJ AS HE ALWAYS GAVE US GOOD FIELD POSITION OVER 80% OF THE TIME WHEN NOT DOWNING THE BALL. MORGAN IS A MUST KEEPER AND I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE HOW THE NON-DRAFTED WR SLEEPER THAT WAS PUT ON IR SHORTLY INTO TRAINING CAMP, BO FLO I CALL HIM.
