Morning Tailgate: Feb. 7

Posted by Taylor Price on February 7, 2012 – 9:26 AM

It’s time to pack up the camera bags and golf bags as 49ers.com heads off to Pebble Beach to cover this year’s Charity Golf Shoot-Out between the San Francisco 49ers and San Francisco Giants.

The photo above is three-time Super Bowl champion Harris Barton, an avid golfer in his own right, who donned a 49ers helmet during his opening tee-shot in last year’s event.

Before we head to Pebble Beach, make sure you vote on the 49ers.com home page for the top sack of 2011. There’s also a review of the team’s defensive efforts in 2011 under coordinator Vic Fangio. And now, let’s get to the most compelling 49ers-related headlines for Feb. 7.

Jim Harbaugh, Alex Smith and a select group of 49ers all-time greats (Jerry Rice, Dwight Clark, Harris Barton and Brent Jones) will compete in a Charity Golf Shoot-Out against representatives from the San Francisco Giants (Will Clark and Matt Cain, among others) on Tuesday. The competition being held at Pebble Beach Golf Links has $100,000 of charity money on the line for the 49ers Foundation, Giants Community Fund and also for local charities in Monterey Bay.  Tickets at the gate will be sold for $30 for the 1:30 p.m. PT event that begins on the first hole. To get an idea of the event, check out TV49’s recap from last year where the 49ers legends toppled the Giants at Pebble Beach.

With the Super Bowl coming to an end, the league has released the official order for the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. The Harbaugh brothers, John and Jim, will draft one after the other as the Ravens and 49ers will select the No. 29 and No. 30 draft picks, respectively.

In the Super Bowl XLVI preview issue of Sports Illustrated released last week, 49ers wide receiver Kyle Williams was the subject of Dan Patrick’s “Just My Type” interview. The receiver opened up about his experiences during and after the NFC Championship game in which he shared how he dealt with two fumbled punts against the New York Giants. Williams’ father, Chicago White Sox general Manager Kenny Williams, was the first person the young receiver spoke to coming out of the 49ers locker room that day.

Lastly, quarterback Colin Kaepernick gave an interview to the Reno Gazette-Journal in which the second-round draft pick, who broke NCAA records at the University of Nevada, spoke about his growth in his first NFL season. Kaepernick said his comfort level grew throughout the year and cited the touchdown drive he led against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as one of the highlights from his first season in San Francisco.

TWEET ABOUT IT

Daniel Kilgore is wasting no time getting ready for his second NFL season. The fifth-round pick out of Appalachian State, who worked at both guard and center positions in his first year with the 49ers, looks like he’s already getting ready for the 2012 season.

I like this format and info…keep it coming. Now that these NIners have had a taste of success, we fans will want to hear everything that goes on with them. In some respects the thirst for knowledge is even greater during the off-season. Thanks for doing that.
