Harbaugh Named AP Coach of the Year

Posted by Scott Kegley on February 4, 2012 – 3:52 PM

In his first season with the 49ers, head coach Jim Harbaugh was named AP Coach of the Year. Harbaugh is the first 49ers coach to win the award since Bill Walsh in 1981. Dick Nolan (1970) is the only other 49ers coach to win AP Coach of the Year.

Harbaugh led the 49ers to the NFC Championship game and a 13-3 regular season after virtually having no offseason due to the work stoppage.

According to Gregg Rosenthal of ProFootballTalk.com, Harbaugh received 45 of the 50 first place votes.

Alex Smith accepted the award on Harbaugh’s behalf and apparently gave a tremendous acceptance speech. Make sure to watch NFL Honors on NBC at 6:00 p.m. PT.

Jeromy…get over yourself and give credit to a quarterback that has hung in there and played well all season.

Jim Harbaugh deserves coach of year. Alex Smith should have been come back player of the year. Especially given he virtually had no receivers to throw to. Vern Davis is a tight end. Crabtree, after the hold out in his rookie year, is exactly what I thought he would be. An overrated, overpaid , underachieving prima donna. After the pay level is measured, it would be best to trade or give this bum his release.

Time to go get Peyton Manning and win the next 3 Superbowls. Peyton with this 49ers defense would be a dynasty for next 5 years. Favre had won of his best years at age 40 and Peyton is only 36 so he has 5 good years left. Balke go get Peyton!!

Awesome Jim….not a doubt in my mind you would have won! Still pondering why that scrub Von Miller won defensive rookie of the year over Aldon Smith when clearly Smith had better stats! Who votes this $hit!!!???

SF 49ER coach Jim Harbaugh wins NFL Coach of the Year!!! this is a new NINER ERA!!! We will get to postseason for sure quite possibly, win the SuperBowl. This is Harbaugh’s FIRST season with niners with 13-3 season, 2 wins by 3, one of them in OT, and the third by 6 to Ravens, who coaches are brothers. We deserved win over Saints given game and thats a rookie QB on SF verse the amazing record braking Drew Breesse! Its tough to see a game go away in 7 min of OT by a mistake by Kyle Williams yet we all knew that niners could have had gotten the football within FG range they would have taken game by three. Next season everyone is going for just round two learning from all mistakes to make another run for the SuperBowl

Jeromy you need to take a chill pill. Alex will only get better with a complete offseason with Harbaugh. Everyone that is saying we need to get Peyton need to step back and realize with the injury he is dealing with him staying healthy is not a give in. Lets resign our free agents, and get Alex some receivers to work with. Oh and by the way don’t sleep on Kyle Williams either, that kid is going to be a beast. If my memory serves me correctly we had another young receiver who was wide open for a touchdown in a playoff game against the Giants and he fumbled the ball off his thigh in the open field. He got talked about as well and he rebounded to be the greates receiver of all time. Remember next season I said it, mark my words. I told people all year also that if Alex played respectable that the Niners were going to shock some people this year & look what happened. Next season if we stay healthy we WILL be the team to beat.

Coach Harbaugh getting Coach of the Year is a no-brainer. He absolutely deserved it. Would’ve been nice to see Alex Smith get comeback player of teh year and Aldon Smith get Defensive ROY…It’s ok though…players are gonna want to come to SF next year and as long as we keep our core intact, and have a healthy productive offseason, we’ll be back stronger next year and ready to go! Go NIners!!!!!

Jim Harbaugh is a great leader, with a great leader you will have a great team,He deserves to be coach of the year. The 49ers should pay Harbaugh extra for being a janitor. He did clean up the mess Singletary left behind.

Thank you Jim, this was such a fun filled season although we lost the NFC championship game. Looking forward to many other great seasons. We as fans owe you a lot. It takes a tremendous amount of work to do what you did. Oh yea… please keep Alex. This quarterback has tremendous heart and it shows. It was not his fault that we lost that game. it was a team effort. everybody lost.

I am a longtime 49er fan,and remember a player that had fumble problem,he with good coaching got the problem taken care of.
trivia :Can anyone name this player? hint he played for the Rams before the 49ers.
This comment is geared towards Kyle Williams.
This guy will be fine,he has more upside than down and as you can see GOOD COACH’S.

Kyle broke millions of fans hearts with his undisciplined approach, at the final minutes of a supremely important game. There should be no forgiveness in play like that. Kyle is the only reason we arent looking at our chance at ring #6!

Great job by Jim Harbaugh this year & he “hands-down” deserves this Coach of the Year award!! Just wished that he could have coached the NFC Pro Bowl team & maybe the NFC would have showed up to play & win!! Alex Smith deserved the Comeback player of the Year award, (Matthew Stafford came back…from what??) & hopefully, this snub motivates him to do even better next season!!

@jeromy: Alex did a much better job this year & it was his comback play against Philadelphia, Detroit, & the New Orleans in the postseason that convinced me, so quit hating on the man…he’s NOT the next coming of Montana, Young, Drew Brees or Peyton Manning, but he is a good solid QB who can & will take the niners to a Super Bowl & get us out 6th Lombardi!!

  36. By 9er9er on Feb 5, 2012 | Reply

@Brian- A dynasty for the next 5 yrs with Peyton Manning? Don’t kid yourselves brian. Peyton has a broken neck and probably will never recover fully. And even if he did who’s to say he’ll last long with the Niners current linemen when Alex Smith had a hard time himself getting sack 44 times this year. Give credit to Smith he hung in there big time with minor injuries. Everyone’s body changes within one year nothing remain the same forever. Remember the 1990’s season when we all thought the 49rs will get a 3 peat and more titles with Joe Montana forever and then he goes down with an injuries and no 3 peat, Young step in and the rest is history.

Congratulations Coach Harbaugh! What a fantastic job you did with the same players, no off season, no training camp. Unbelievable. Alex Smith did a great job, with a better O line and some wide receivers, the sky is the limit. The draft is the key as you coach young men so well. We were robbed several times this year by the refs and we still made it to the NFC Championship, where once again the refs took away an obvious fumble that would have probably decided the game. Look forward to watching you forge a Championship team soon.

jeromy: hey man in order for AS to succeed he must have receivers that can get open. of course with all your knowledge of football and privy to 7yrs film you will make excuses. not the receivers fault, pump fake lack, etcLOL. why don’t you give it a rest??

I wonder How many MVP votes Harbaugh received??? Week 9 I went to FED EX field to watch us play the Skinss and began the HARBAUGH FOR MVP campaign, Some how Aaron Rodgers got it lmaoo!!!

Alex did a hell of a job and all you Alex haters need to start like teams other then the red and gold…man i have been a niner fan since i as a child….i live now in ms…and have stuck wih them throught thick and thin…coach deserved the award that he got by a long shot…Alex played everygame this years…with all the hits he took that shows me thaty’s one tought dude and vey smart..if you hate Alex switch teams because that is the future and when is the last time you saw a qb get hit that way and hang on to the ball way he did…and dont say he doesn’t hve arm strength he has plenty..and get off Kyle Williams..not everyone is perfect and it’s a team game so lay off him he will be back and even better…you should be ashamed knocking QB and Kyle..Alex is the future and coach see’s that…if your a true niner fan look at the future not tha past…the past is 5 superbowls and with what we have in our coaching staff and players come next year they will be more hungry then ever.

I don’t blame Kyle Williams beside he was a 6Th round draft pick doing filling a job for some one who got hurt, this was his rookie year because he were hurt most of last year. The that should get the blame is Crabtree the 10Th over all pick that held out and have done nothing to this date they should cut their lost cut him because all talk and no action!

Congrats to captain comeback,no other coach better. Don’t blame Kyle for the loss. The kid is only 23,only returned pumps 3 times prior,6th rd pick, just a backup for Ted Gin. If you wanted to put it on someone, it is Brad Seely in not putting a very inexperienced pt kid to return back punts in a high pressured game with zero margin for error in a very wet, swirling windy game blowing at about 15-17 mph at the stick.Even as great of a special teams coach as Brad is, he got outcoached by Coughlin who understood to tell his punt returners not to field the slippery ball or to go down quickly once they caught the ball. After Kyle showed early signs of inexperience and trouble with the ball earlier in the game(mishandled ball from Gore and diving for a punt) should have put him in a position to succeed and not risk failure by just catch the ball and guard the ball quickly or let it go if the ball knuckled on him since Giants gameplan was to go after him from his history of concussions. This will only make Kyle stronger and something to prove next year.

Guys relax if a fan does not see Alex smith as the future that does not make them any less of a fan dudee…we all have suffered for 9years 6 of which were with Alex smith…granted having all the coaching issues….I am a die hard Niner fan just like you, and i am not an Alex smith Hater at all, I think he is average….If you think he is the FUTURE you need to watch some more video and learn football….a great qb makes everyone around him better, for example (peyton, rodgers, brees). Alex was put in situations to succeed, he handled the offense that was set out for him, and it was not an offense built around strong qb play, it was built to confuse defenses with different formations, and it was designed to be a run first offense!! Alex job was to not turn over the ball…he did that well this year, but that does not make him the qb of the future!!!!
