49ers Sign 2 to Reserve/Future Contracts

Posted by Alex Espinoza on January 31, 2012 – 4:59 PM

The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed G Garrett Chisolm and T Kenny Wiggins to Reserve/Future contracts.

Chisolm (6-6, 299) was originally signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent on 7/28/11, and later added to their practice squad on 9/4. Chisolm was later released by the Dolphins on 9/20. He also spent time on the Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens practice squads in 2011.

A 23-year old native of Charleston, SC, Chisolm starred collegiately at South Carolina where he earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2010.

Wiggins (6-6, 314) was signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on 7/27/11, and was later released following training camp. He was signed to the Baltimore Ravens practice squad on 11/28 and spent the remainder of the season with the unit.

Wiggins, a 23-year old native of Elk Grove, CA, appeared in 42 career games at Fresno State. As a Bulldog, he earned All-Western Athletic Conference first-team honors as a senior in 2010 and All-WAC second-team in 2009.

Alex Smith is a good QB and Peyton is not worth the money don’t need a QB need some WR’s

we need to resign most of our guys back, and pick up some WR’s and possibly a DT

  6. By Mario Cadenza on Jan 31, 2012 | Reply

we do not need a new qb. we need some linemen that can pick up the blitz and a strong WR that can beat press and take some pressure off Crabtree and V. Davis.

Garret is a Guard, Wiggins a Tackle. That’s what the G and T on front of their names mean. When are we getting a decent QB? Smith showed signs of life this year, but we need a REAL quarterback.

don’t need a new QB, maybe a new kickoff returner ;)

Are you serious Ivan??? You would really rather give up on a young, fast, strong armed QB whose best days are ahead of him at only 28 and finally have a coach who knows how to develop QB’s & go out and gamble on a 35 year old mess (see link) –

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/peyton-manning-indianapolis-colts-neck-injury-slow-progress-may-never-play-again-013012

I agree with Pennsylvanian9er- We had to many unhealthy recievers when we needed them the most it became our downfall by limiting us. Look at ALL the WRs we started the season with and who was hurt and/or actually played in the NFC Championship game!

Receivers! Receivers! Receivers! THat is what the 49ers need and defensive backs! Alex Smith had no one to throw to last week. More weapoons would have been nice.

Alex is beyond just beinig a good quarterback if for no other reason than he has had to put up with all the armchair quarterbacks who have no skill beyond shooting their mouthes off. No team does what it did this year without a good, if not great quarterback. Yeah, the TEAM has room for improvement, but getting to the final playoff game was no fluke, we’ll be in the same position next year except we’ll also have healthy WRers and a team that’s had more than a six months under a new coach. All you negative nitwits need to learn to support your team and quit looking for people to blame.

jeromy; still a jerk. he isn’t going to be traded and you know damm well he isn’t. we don’t need another quarterback we need wide receivers and ol depth. we have only VD that can stretch the field. give AS the receivers he needs and we will see what happens then.

Yall forget one thing bout peyton manning his O-line what built for him if he goes to us he’s nothing more than a ticking time bomb for us and besides Alex Smith proved to us that he is worthy of becoming our starting QB from here on out.

Get off AS bck he proved plenty this past season. Our problem was WE”s going down. Crabtree didin”t step up like he should have or was capable of Get one or Rwo big receivers and AS will walk us to the super bowl victory that everone is looking for

Dude really Alex is always the talk because when people say he is good enough you guys are makeing the niners loom stupid if he was that good he would be gettting offers from other teams …duh ….if he was that good he would have been able to move the ball more consistantly…if he was such a good QB he would be better at throwing when the defense is in zone….if he was such a good QB you woudnt have to make so amny excuses for him ….if he was sucha good QB the press would be all over him Tebow is a hack and yet no coverage on smith ….no hey he will win it next year or hey he is the new prototype of the NFL …..people he is a joke a bust a non factor a wate of the niners money and time 8 years for a QB really now wonder we are the laughing stock of the NFL. Teams took us for granted last year …they wont thisn year right now people are going over the defense and special teams video and skimming over the Alex footage because it is still the same old Alex …sad but true….he telegraphs too much …accuracy is garbage and cant throw a timeing route …all things that a west coast offense needs to win …not to mention his 3rd down conversion rate is horrific…there is soooo much more but i am tired of explaining

  23. By gpop on Feb 1, 2012 | Reply

Scott you are so right. AS has put up with more stuff i.e. new OC every year. That would destroy a lesser QB. He did an outstanding job this year. We need WR’s and OL depth. Crabtree should be ashamed of himself not signing when he should have and then never being the WR everyone thought he would be.

  24. By gpop on Feb 1, 2012 | Reply

By seven years with Alex. One question, why aren’t you a coach in the NFL?
And you forget that AS went thru a lot with different OC’s every year. I agree he needs to improve but give him one more year with the same coaches and see how much he progresses then make a move one way or another.

We have Kapernick and Smith… We don’t need anything but Rec’s and O-Lineman. We could always use another return man and definitely more depth at CB wouldn’t hurt. I think our main focus in the draft will be WR’s OL and then CB’s. If there is a good pickup available in the later rounds I’m sure we will pick up another running back as well. We are a complete team. I can’t wait to see how Kapernick has come along in the coming pre-season games.

To all the true fans in this forum, stay tight and let just support our team and leave the sellouts, to scurry alone…WE dont need them and the team dont need thier support…Anyway, we willo have a good draft, and Im sure baalke and coach have a few things up thier sleeve, they always due…Let gett’em next year team!!!

Hey people settle down, this is the bottom line when you have seven different offence head coaches what are you to do as a QB. You are trying to make and inpression but you just can’nt make the cut. Now that we have a Head Coach that know what to do and how to interact with Alex, this QB will go a long way. I do have to say we need some WR”s to be more of an offencive theat, we also need a full back and corner that is tall and fast over all I think the 49’er have good chance to go again and this time win!

  30. By Jake on Feb 1, 2012 | Reply

I got one last thing to say to all the ALEX haters (jerome & seven years)…it seems like there are people out there who are more driven to be “right”, then to actually see us win. That is NOT a true 49er fan, whether you have been following since 1950, 1960, or whatever. You gave up on Alex many years ago and made it known loud and clear so now instead of wanting to see him do well and support us FAITHFUL win, you would rather see him fail to say “I told you so!”. It’s all about your petty ego’s and so wanting to be right because deep down you know you don’t know JACK-7 years is so desperate to convince us that he is even going so far as to compare Alex to Jarmacus Russell? Are you kidding? Do you even know the game of football or are you that desperate to be right? You tools (7 years & Jeromy) are a JOKE. We trust our great coach and GM to make the right calls because they have earned our respect. 6-10 to 13-3 and the NFC Championship in Harbaughs 1st year!

  31. By Jake on Feb 1, 2012 | Reply

The haters don’t even make any sense. If you say you trust the coach then shut up about Alex if the coach believes in him and if you really think signing Peyton Manning is an improvement then you just going by name and not on reality for now and the future. He is fragile & immobile & lucky to ever play again, let alone be the same again. He has a fused neck! Do you know what a West Coast offense truly is? The mobility one must possess? He was never mobile even in his best years. He would never survive! Its amazing what a low self esteem and a need to think you right will drive people to say the most rediculous and non-logical statements. WOW!

  32. By Dave on Feb 1, 2012 | Reply

Have you all forgotten that we’re a run first team? Since we drafted Frank Gore that’s been our philosophy. The days of Steve Young and Joe Montana are over. The problem with Alex was that he had 7 different offensive coordinators and 3 defensive minded coaches. In effect, not his problem. We finally have an offensive minded coach and former QB that can help Alex get to the next level. Within the next two seasons you’ll see that Alex will have more opportunity to open up the offense and throw more. He was so good in college because he ran his offense out of the spread which is something we haven’t done in years. We need to get Morgan back on the field, Crabtree needs to step up his game and we need a fast slot guy and take advantages of mismatches in the middle. Once that happens people will see that Alex isn’t a bust. No, he didn’t throw for 5000 yards and 40 TD’s but he threw for the most yards of his career this year and he had the fewest picks in the league. I’d say that’s a pretty good indicator of how much he’s improved with this new coaching staff. He’s had the deck stacked against him for 7 years and what he did this year shows that he can be a great QB. And don’t forget, it’s a TEAM sport. You win as a team or you lose as a team. You can’t put it all on one mans shoulders.

Payton Manning wont leave Indianapolis… or certainly I cant see him being ousted out by them – he’s the big reason they had enough cash to make Lucas Oil Stadium in how it is .

I think Alex has done a great job this season and I expect him to improve dramatically each subsequent season as well.
The posts about the need for WRs is bang on the money – we did suffer terribly in the NFC Championship due to very limited options IMHO

1 Mohamed Sanu………..WR……………………..Great route runner with exceptional hands
2 Kevin Zietler……………OG……………………….May not be here, but there are some quality OG’s to be had
    3 Derek Wolfe…………….DE/DT…………………..Could go higher.
4 Marvin McNutt………..WR……………………….Great route runner and red zone WR. A steal if he is available
5 Asa Jackson…………….CB………………………A need and too good of a prospect to wait until the 6th round. 4.0 speed
    6 Matt Daniels………………FS/SS ………………..Way underrated…..probably will not be here
7 Sammy Brown………..OLB……………………..The guy has unbelievable numbers to be rated this low
    7 Scott Wedige……………C………………………..Another underrated player

Lol well spoken jeromy ….these guys want to wait 12 years to see if alex can be good and no he did not have a good year or he would have been in probowl …duh. All this bogus garbage about coordinators …all they do is make the plays and make sure the QB runs em right….co-ordinators dont make you a better QB you jokers …wow call me names and say i dont know anything …truth is you dont wich is why you raise your pom-poms for alex instead of wanting the team to move forward and succeed. Alex will never go to a superbowl unless it is on the bench watching a better QB out do him for way less money. Move on people he was saved by the defense this year ….and if any of them leave well you will have that to blame i guess for the lack of anything from Alex

That being said he had a god ending in the saints game because they went to man coverage with the game on the line …that was not a good call by them and alex made really easy throws….the ravens play zone and change it up wich is why he did really bad now everyone plays the zone as best they can …wich is what the giants did and Alex was flat the entire game….the first 2 touchdowns were scripted plays …wich if you didnt know …they do run about 20 plays over and over and over and they had a bye week so over again and that is where those 2 came from …but after that alex was on his own and well you see the results…nothing…he had several opportunites to win the game he refused to throw the ball ..and when he did it was in the ground ..he played poor on purpose ….and younwant him back lol ….maybe you all should go to a team like the bills and wish and hope that one day you will see a superbowl

It hilarious, Jeromy and 7 Years try to act lik ethey know football. Peyton and Reggie Wayne, huh? Wow what other names can we fantasize about? Why not Favre, Chris Carter, …oh better yet, lets bring back Jerry, we won with him. You guys are true football genius’s. Lets just throw out names of guys who are big names. Thats the obvious answer. Lets come back to the REAL world. Amazing how low your IQ’s are :) I am turning from being annoyed to actually finding you guys to be like cartoons or women who follow football. Oh Peyton, he is good. Reggie Wayne, I heard of him before, he must be good. HAHAHAHA!

Steve Young was 33 when he finally won a Superbowl. Drew Brees was 30 when he finally won a Superbowl.
BOTH HAD BEEN WITH TEAMS WHO GAME UP ON THEM!
Peyton Manning took his 6th season to even win a playoff game and 9th season to even win a Superbowl. Alex is only 28 AND CHEW ON THIS: Alex had 2 TD’s and zero interceptions in the NFC Championship game. Brady has 0 TD’s and 2 interceptions in the AFC Championship game and he is in the SB. It is sooo obvious that the issue was the problems we had at WR this year. If you don’t see that, then you really did not watch the games or know diddly about football. 7 years cracks me up with his zone reading babble like he knows something no one else does. HAHAHA!

After this last year I am psyched about next year. Alex “will” be resigned AND there will be open competition at QB (read or listen to what Harbaugh said about every position). I think Alex took the team where he was capable of taking them. What I have seen of CK, if he can read defenses we are set!!! Might have to give up too much for Payton and no guarantee that one hit will not take him back out for good. Will be good fodder for future discussions. We do need a WR and DB upgrades/depth.

I think Alex will be a better quarterback than Peyton. Alex has legs, Peyton is just a target for linemen. Why is he on the bench this season? Alex shows toughness, he moves around in the pocket. He will eventually be better than Peyton has ever been. Look how he has improved in one year with a good coach? That should say a lot. I really don’t want a “has been” like Peyton or Drew on our team. I think Alex has what it takes to get us to the big dance. Maybe more than once. He is the future. Believe it or not.

  49. By Kenneth K. on Feb 1, 2012 | Reply

All you people that think Alex Smith is just the great need to go back and watch the games over. He did not win those games for the Niners, David Akers and the defense won them, Alex could not even convert many third downs. His receivers helped him alot, The ball most of the time when he decided to throw it was either over thrown or low with just a few where they belonged, He did not throw many interceptions because he did not throw it much, He still has alot of learning to do. Take this point, In the championship game he had twice over thrown receivers that were wide open that would have gone for touchdowns that would have cause the Niners to win the game and never needed the overtime period. He is just a decent quarterback at the moment that has to learn to trust his receivers and just throw the ball were it is supposed to be thrown and let his receivers do there job.

Its almost like Jeromy and Seven Years don’t want Alex to succeed because it would mean they are wrong. Dumb@ss lookup up your history, the point was Steve Young was given up upon by his original team, AND do not forget he lost to Dallas twice in the NFC Championship when he finally had the team with two guys named Jerry Rice & John Taylor. A true 49er fan would remember that and people like you wanted to give up on him then. I also noticed you overlooked the Brees & Manning not wiinning until past their 30’s. Brees was given up on & even Tiki and other Giant fans wanted to give up on Eli before he won his first. Look its becoming more clear that you 2 fools do not want to see Alex succeed becuase you want to be right more than you want to see him succeed. Thats not 49er fans, its just pathetic that you are that insecure that you would rather be right. None of us know whats going to happen but to give up on Alex now when we have made such strides with “practice squad recievers” starting in the NFC Championship is rediculous. BTW: I never said Alex was better than Brady idiot, but I am saying that even the great Brady has bad games. I am done with you two becuase you obviously have an Agenda in being soooo dedicated to being right than wanting him to do well. Know your history and football facts idiot. Alex is young and gives us the best chance to win it all next year instead of a guy who is lucky to ever play again-he cant even pick up his kids right now and has had the whole season to heal. And you babbling about reading zones. I am starting to think you 11 years old. You act like Hall of Fame QB’s can be dialed up anytime and plugged into any system and voila a team wins a SuperBowl. There are so many factors that make a QB succeed and they all have taken different roads. Its amazing how stupid you two are!

if you look at how we played in the NFC Championship you might agree with me when I say that we did not have a solid game plan and we did not excecute well. There were mistakes all over the field including the side line. Why would you put the game in the hands of Alex when averaging 6 yards a carry. Was it the field? could the Oline not dig in to stop the momentum of the Dline? Only Jim and the players know the answer to that question. But my question is why would you let a rookie that has fielded only 5 punts all season back there? And why did we not put Kendall back there? It was clearly a mismatch for KYLE, not to blame him for the loss, to be fielding punts. It was so obvious that he could not handle the pressure of being in a game of this calibir he should have been pulled. I was just about to apologize for still complaining about the loss but I don’t need to because I am sure there are a lot of long time fans that still have a very bitter taste in their mouths. We spent more time trying not to lose the game and not enough time trying to win. And where were some of those trick plays that we have been seeing all season long. If we are to make it to the big stage we have to try and win not not lose. I love my 9ers. Whooooo has it better than us?

another thing…Alex is starting to come into his own and had an outstanding season. I would not invest in Peyton Manning when all we need is a few good WR’s and good back up with experience to back up Teddy on special teams. I think even after the great season Alex had he was prepared for that game. But it was his first of that magnitude and I think the old alex might have reared his ugly head. That being said, he had a few totally awesome plays and gave us a better than good chance to win. Who could have seen it coming right? Jim said it was the ‘football godsthat had a different plan’. I say next year take it out of there hands and don’t look back next season at the last blunder by an inexperienced player. I hope that we get all of players back except one…Go 9ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  60. By hayes on Feb 2, 2012 | Reply

Alex will work well in this offense, and as far as receivers go, we do need one or two to be picked up, but dont forget that Josh Morgan will be back and he and Alex have always clicked. I think if we can get this same squad back +/- a few guys, and have a full training camp to get coached up, 9ers will be a force!

  61. By gary potter on Feb 2, 2012 | Reply

ment to say haven’t signed any regulars yet. got a deal for you 2 clowns AS is going to play in crosby. why don’t you 2 experts take turns being his caddy?? that way you could impart all your wisdom and make him a better quarterback LOL. of course being a caddy means you have to know something which leaves you 2 out of it.

let Alex Be he has no talent to throw to except for Vernon David,if Crabtree was anumber 1 reciever he would be stepping up in the big games and getting more than 1 catch. what we need is a Wes Welker type slot reciever.
there is one available in this years draft his name is Josh Cooper wide out Sr.
from Okla. State .being a o-state fan as long as a 9er fan he has consistly made big plays for OSU his last 3 years. and with us picking 30th he should still be around

trade alex for a draft pick and a future draft pick while the teams are still looking his way, cause oh no one more off coordinator is not going to kill him (alex) after all he should have been paying attention to norv turner when he was here look what he did for rivers in s.d. say your prayers alex….

Is Alex Smith inept or do we have slow slow WRs….every time Alex escaped the rush and rolled he threw it into the ground…………but from what I could see a DB was drapped all over CrabTree……..we need WRs……BIG , fast WRs…..and Josh Morgan back………..

I have had the pleasure of meeting Joe M. Steve Y. And last year before the season, before Alex S. knew he was going to be a 49er I met him at KnobHill Los Gatos. Humble soft spoken but really a good guy. We wished each other luck, I told him I didnt care where he ended up but that the Lord was with him. Alex has done the right thing. We need to do right by him now. 9er nation, support him Harbaugh knows what hes doing. We were 2 plays away from being in the SB with a rookie coach. I have also met Justin Smith, I love the guy and we need to find his replacement, he has been in the league 13/14 years and is the linch pin to our defense. Love the niners, blessed every day.

You know, I have been a 49er fan for 48 years now, I have seen them fall I have seen them go to the Super Bowl. Alex Smith, get off his back, he is a good quarterback, he was good under Norval Turner when he was our Offensive Coornaitor, it is not fair to the guy to go through so many coaches. Also, if you all remember Bill Walsh like his stats over Aaron Rogers, Alex had better stats in college. Also, Aaron Rogers had our previous coach to coach him Holligroom, and also was under Favre, what has Alex had to look up to, not much. He now has a coach, alot like Bill Walsh, Jim Harbaugh, so I think fans need to get behind him and pull for him instead of getting on his back. I have seen and met the greatest players of 49ers history, now we have a future so give Alex Smith a chance and get off his back. Yes, I totally agree we about two more wide receivers, also get off of Kyle Williams back, he is young and he is fast, so once he is trained I am sure he is going to be great. I think the team should all stay together, the one that took us almost to the Super Bowl, actually I have never heard in all my years of watching football that a running back was given forward progress after he fumbled the ball, one thing we have to look at is the 49ers Defense out played the Giants and we would have probably won if the ref’s would have given us the fumble, so lets just say ref’s error not the 49ers quarterback.

Jeromy and 7 years have got to be the most emotional haters I have ever heard. They don’t even make any sense. If KW doesnt turn the ball over twice we in the Superbowl with Alex having better stats than Brady. The difference of winning and losing in the NFL is sooo slim that someone can go from hero to zero OR zero to hero in an instant. Its a team sport idiots. The QB did not turn the ball over twice but threw 2 TD’s and ZERO pics with only ONE starting WR healthy in the playoffs. You think Eli would have gotten to the SB without Cruz & Mario Manningham BUT only having Hakeem Nicks? Are you really that dumb or hating so much that your judgement is that clouded? Wow!

Alex Smith had a good year and didn’t turn ball over. Yes, we need more td’s than field goals. GOOD THING FOR OUR DEFENSE. Tougher schedule next year! How about signing a big physical receiver like Vincent Jackson out of San Diego/

All people like Tarcules, 7 years and Jeromy do is force great players to want to leave. The constant amount of unappreciativeness because they are miserable with themselves & feel like losers in their own lives leaves them transferring all their frustrations on players imperfections. It’s constant with them and they will always find something or someone to blame all their unhappiness on. No one is saying Alex was the greatest QB this year but his improvement & the improvement of the team has given us hope. And are thankful for a season no one predicted and even though we fell short, we feel good about the future. People like you are the reason why the great Bill Walsh retired earlier than he should have or we would have won more SB’s. He was sooo exhausted and burned out becuase no matter how much he did whenever we did not win the Superbowl or even lost a game YOU questioned everything! People like you will never be happy because you don’t even like yourselves and this is what its really about with them so everyone else don’t waste your time on them cuz they are losers in life.

well i wasnt the biggest AS fan at all in the start of the season but you know what ill give him and the 49ers team big props for coming into a season with having very little time to practice as a team with a new head coach because of the
same crap that basketball just went through. more or less a whole new offensive set up with w/r and plays they put on a hell of a show. id like to see where AS can take us again next year with some real time to be able to practice with the rookies we had this year and the new rookies coming up next year. well get to the super bowl just gotta have faith

I would just like to thank Jim Harbaugh, Trent Balk, and alot of the niners players that gave there heart and souls into making this a team to believe in once again, I think we need to re-sighn just about everyone, and hopefully pick up some big play wideouts. Im not sure how the giants could have defended Davis, Gore, and still managed to shutdown Crabtree and Williams (who had no business being in at kick return) Im not a dr but I think Ginn could havee started just as a return man. Thanks to Jed York as well Akers and way to many impressive guys to mention.

After watching the Giants win the superbowl….itś not hard to feel that that should have been the Niners holding up the Lombardi Trophy today….

Lets hope all things work our way so we can end up in the Super-Bowl next year…….gooooo Niners

  96. By dave g. on Feb 6, 2012 | Reply

We really should have won but a few unlucky breaks made it not happen. No need to panic, we will be better with a full year with an actual offseason for Harbaugh to keep working his magic. We actually beat the Giants and they just got lucky at the right time. It s*cks but it happens. We will be better for it though.

Everyone has an opinion on who we should pick up, including me. Then I remember that the present coach and backroom staff took us to the brink of the Superbowl from nowhere… and I figure I’ll leave it to the people who obviously know what they’re doing and support whoever they put out there next season. That said, I hope Alex Smith is back next time round to make the trolls on this board look as stupid as he did this year. There were plenty of the same people calling for him to be let go last preseason because “we couldn’t win games with him”.

I think most of us posting here, or rather, all of us, do not actually play on the ‘niners’ team ourselves. As fans, we can only watch and empathize with the lows and celebrate with the highs of our team…we really have no right to criticize the team or individual players in it (Alex Smith) one way or the other. One thing we can safely judge though, and that I believe we can all agree on, is that the performance of the 49ers this year was excellent and inspiring. I believe they could have defeated the patriots without issue if they made it to the superbow. We have much to look forward to next season.
