Vote Aldon Smith for Rookie of the Week

Posted by Alex Espinoza on December 20, 2011 – 2:22 PM

Following a 2.5-sack performance on Monday Night Football against the Pittsburgh Steelers, 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has been nominated for the NFL Pepsi Rookie of the Week. Visit NFL.com/rookies to vote for Smith.

Smith is vying for his third Pepsi Rookie of the Week award this season, having also won in Week 5 and Week 6. Following Monday night’s game, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Smith has looked dominant this year.

“I’ll tell you what, he had another great game tonight,” Harbaugh said in his postgame press conference. “We’re all really happy for Aldon, the way he’s contributed. The way he’s played this game.”

The No. 7 overall pick out Missouri has notched four games of at least 2.0 sacks this season, while setting a new single-season rookie franchise record with 13.0 on the year. Smith broke Charles Haley’s record of 12.0 sacks, which was set in 1986, during Monday night’s contest.

It’s a shame he missed those first few games, or at least more playing time..He’d probably be close to 20 sacks..Just a matter of time, till he has the season record…..

Jim Harbaugh is really where the credit belongs for drafting Aldon Smith. In his interviews of the last couple of days, JH mentioned how they looked him over and saw his unique abilities in tight spaces up front and around other defenders, and his ability to always be on his feet even when he was knocked down impressed them enough to draft him in the first round. Another stat that stands out in my mind is the fact that he has 13 sacks in only being involved in 400 snaps thus far in the season. Normally, a D lineman should be around 600-700 snaps in the season at this point. When looked upon from this perspective, this young man is someone truly special. I know the naysayers will come back and say, that’s why he has so many sacks because he only comes in when he’s fresh and ready to go, where the other linemen are tired and worn out….that’s a legit point, but at the same time, there are those who only has 400 snaps or more in similar situations who don’t have near the sacks this young man has. The sacks are the only numbers we take notice of, We do’nt hear of the number times he hit’s the QB, hurry him, and all that. This young man is the making of a legend when it is said and done…I pray that he understands this and it humbles him to the point that he will increase his work habbits and continue to finetune his game so he can continue to polish his carreer and give us fans and the organization something special to look forward to every year, and for a very long time.

    Goooooooooo Niners
