49ers Sign Matthews to P-Squad
Posted by on November 29, 2011 – 3:43 PM
The San Francisco 49ers have announced that they have signed WR John Matthews to the team’s practice squad. The team also released S Mark LeGree from the unit.
Matthews (6-0, 200) was originally signed to the 49ers practice squad earlier this year on 10/4, where he spent five games before being released on 11/15.
Matthews originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts in 2009, spending 12 weeks on their practice squad, before being releasing on 12/1/09. He re-signed with Colts on 2/14/10 and was released prior to training camp. Matthews signed with Jacksonville Jaguars on 7/21/10 and was later signed to their practice squad following training camp. He was promoted to the Jaguars active roster on 11/9 and saw action in three games. Matthews was released by Jacksonville on 8/13/11 and signed with the Miami Dolphins on 8/16. He was released by the Dolphins on 9/2.
LeGree had been signed to the 49ers practice squad on 11/15.

looks like hes been released a lot, what we need is someone who will give us a chance to make big plays down field. this guy doesnt seem like much of a reciever at 6 foot, im taller than him.
By Dakki on Nov 29, 2011 | Reply
Steve Smith ain’t that tall either, so that’s a crappy argument.

Harbaugh coached this guy at the University of San Diego. Harbaugh knows what Matthews is capable of, and it looks like he is giving him an opportunity to try and succeed In the NFL. They have good chemistry and Harbaugh trusts him. He is a possession type receiver, something the 49ers don’t currently have. He was a great college WR and broke a few records in Div. III. Check him out!

Signed Matthews – great. I’m good to go!. I have no idea who this kid is, or his claim to fame – but whatever. If the Niner brain-trust signed him, I am more than cool with it. Hey! look how they’ve done so far. Enough said.

if we’re gonna sign another wr. why not dominique ziegler,or take a shot at T.O…i know he’s a problem but if he starts trouble just release him….
By alex curtis on Nov 30, 2011 | Reply
You people do realize he was signed to the practice squad right? He was already on the squad earlier in the season.

I agree with that C.-C. Dominique Ziegler was one of the best young players on the squad, that’s one they should really get back. Terrell Owens is worth a 2 to 3 year(good bye) contract loaded with incentives, but with a very, very short leash .

I fail to comprehend all the angst over a practice squad signing. Give it a rest, y’all.

I have heard of this guy. I was one that did not like Alex Smith either last year and I’ve changed my heart on him this year. Harbaugh kept him and made him into something. 9-2 you can’t argue with that. Harbaugh’s got this guy for a reason and it’s good enough for me. Look what Walsh did with Jerry Rice. Remember when he first started he was lousy. Could not catch a ball.
By jerry lewis on Nov 30, 2011 | Reply
Enjoy the games and leave the player selection and coaching to Harbaugh. 9-2.
By Richard Reliford on Nov 30, 2011 | Reply
i think the 49ers is doing a great job 9-2 next step playoffs then you already know the superbowl so lets do this niners

Letting Joe, Lott, Rice, Craig, Seifert, Garcia (to name a few) go when we did was a mistake….. T.O. was a never should have been. Let the coach, coach and the rest of us go along for the ride. Guys were talking play-offs here. Go 9′ers.

All the WR’s in the world are not going to help us when our QB is not a threat to throw an accurate deep ball. We are 9 – 2 because of the defense…i hate to say it but we are not going to fair well in the playoffs without an offense than can keep pace with these other teams. I’m not taking anything away from Alex because he’s done great this year by playing smart he just is not a big play threat.
By mike on Nov 30, 2011 | Reply
A lot of good WR’s aren’t that tall – Wes Welker is only 5-9, Desean Jackson is 5-10, Deion Branch is 5-9. As long as he’s quick and can manuever, I think he’ll be good.

Very disappointed that Niners released Mark LeGree … I thought that he had a big motor, great attitude, and loved to hit. What is the issue? Injury? Off-field issues? What?
He’s now been released by the Seahawks, Cards and Niners.

Mark,
I’m inviting torches and pitch forks by saying this, but I think Steve Young was an even better quarterback than Joe Montana. Yes, saying that is almost sacrilege as a Niner fan, but it’s not an insult. It’s like comparing King Cong to God Zilla. They were both huge monsters of the game.
At the end of our dynasty it was time for us to pay our dues. Old slick Eddie (and I mean that endearingly) years of winning on borrowed money from the future to get around the cap.
But by now we’ve paid our dues and then some. Those of us who stuck with the beloved red and gold deserve this season. And a big thank you to Jim H and our terrifying defense for getting us this far. Harbaugh has earned my trust and confidence, and no doubt next season we’ll see some improvements with our O-side of the ball.
If he can do that and keep our D playing at their current level….
do I smell another dynasty? Oh I hate to get ahead of myself but I can’t help but reminisce ….

I just want to win.. yes I still believe in A. Smith to lead us to the super bowl.. no doubt and Harbaugh is the guy bringing us back to the playoffs, but can we stay healthy i’ve seen many plays where the other team just plain out ot beat then we get hit with a fat penalty, or a bad call by the referee.. if we can stay healthy and commit no penalties we are as good as gold 6x champs bring it AFC. I think the referees stress on us because we are a great team and we showcase them proudly, but no championchips to showcase yet. I know they’d be happy visiting us here on the west coast. I think we owe all the niner fans worldwide the thrill of a super bowl apperance and a victory. GO NINERS!!!! wooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Coach JH sees what has to be done,…. Matthews is a missing link,…. B Edwards is just too soft, too much. With Crabtree dropping key throws, Alex throwing under pressure the opportunities are minimal and can not be further wasted. We have won many games due to our kicker. We need many more TDs in the redzone. In all great season but work in progress for sure! Go Niners!

DEFENCE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS, doesnt matter if we have an okay offense as long as they score, which they have all season. Defense wins championships. three an out baby three and out..

ALEX IS DOING REAL WELL, HE NEEDS BETTER PROTECTION BY THE O-LINE AND ANDREW LUCK WILL BE PICKED UP BY THE WORST NFL TEAM NEXT DRAFT!. WE HAVE A GREAT TEAM COMING TOGETHER, GROWING AND GETTING BETTER EVERY DAY. OUR 9 AND 2 RECORD SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. I HOPE THEY SIGN ALEX TO A 5 YEAR CONTRACT. I BELIEVE THAT ALEX WILL BECOME A WAY BETTER QB THEN ROGERS AND SOME OF THE OTHER ELITE QB’S NOW THAT HE HAS THE RIGHT COACHING STAFF!
GO SF49ERS>>>>>>>10 AND 2 ON SUNDAY

I never stopped believing in Alex Smith. Just surviving the bad coaching and beating he has endured for years is a testament to his inherent toughness. It was such a wise decision to stay here and apparently Coach Harbaugh thought so too. Alex is very smart and has probably seen everything bad a quarterback can imagine with previous co-ordinators and coaches. Now Harbaugh has given him the golden truth and his personal confidence. 10-2, Division Champs before any-other team. And he CAN throw long, if he gets protection and receivers actually catch the ball with no penalties. Happy me!

rjd, no doubt! putting their feet up. laying down on their team. failing to focus on the real stats… games won, games lost, and why.
