Smith and Gore Win Weekly Awards

Posted by Alex Espinoza on October 21, 2011 – 2:19 PM

Linebacker Aldon Smith earned his second straight Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week honor and running back Frank Gore was named the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week.

Voters on NFL.com selected Smith after he had four tackles, two sacks, a safety and a forced fumble in the 49ers’ 25-19 win against the previously undefeated Detroit Lions. Gore earned his award after running for 141 yards and a score on 15 carries. His 9.4 yards per carry average was the highest of any back with more than 10 carries on the weekend. Gore beat out Pittsburgh’s Rashard Mendenhall and Atlanta’s Michael Turner to win the award.

Smith was selected from among five finalists through fan votes on NFL.com/rookies.  The other finalists were Quarterback Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals, defensive tackle Stephen Paea of the Chicago Bears, wide receiver Greg Salas of the St. Louis Rams and defensive end Jabaal Sheard of the Cleveland Browns.

After the regular season, five players will be nominated for Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year honors.  Fans can vote for the winner on NFL.com/rookies throughout the month of January.  The winner will be announced at a press conference at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis.

This is Pepsi’s tenth year as the official soft drink sponsor of the NFL and the tenth year that Pepsi will present the NFL Rookie of the Week and NFL Rookie of the Year awards.

Aaron Rodgers was also named the FedEX Air NFL Player of the Week after threw for 310 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in the Packers’ 24-3 win over the St. Louis Rams. His 119.6 passer rating was the highest of any quarterback on the weekend. This is his third consecutive win in the Air category.

The weekly FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week Awards are also a win for local communities. Along with the player awards, FedEx is making a $2,000 donation in each of the winning players’ names to the local Junior Achievement area offices in Wisconsin and Northern California. The funding is used to help U.S. small business development, by educating the next generation of entrepreneurs on how to start and grow their own businesses.

During the week leading up to Super Bowl XLVI, FedEx plans to announce the 2011 FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Year in Indianapolis, as well as make a $25,000 donation in each winning player’s name to Junior Achievement chapters in the players’ cities.

Fans can still vote for the FedEx Small Business of the Week by visiting NFL.com/FedEx to cast their vote for one of three small business nominees. FedEx will award $5,000 each week to the small business that receives the most online votes, which will be announced every Tuesday. The program then culminates in recognizing the FedEx Small Business of the Year with an all-inclusive trip to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis.

As the Official Delivery Service Sponsor of the NFL, Super Bowl and Pro Bowl, FedEx understands the need for a winning game plan, and created the Air & Ground program to highlight superior on-field performance among the league’s top-performing quarterbacks and running backs. Congrats QBKilla Aldon Smith! Defensive Rookie of the Year will be yours! Another 12 sacks and 4 sack/strips will seal the deal…not to mention a Super Bowl Ring! Lets get that #2 seed and homefield advantage! I’d love to see us vs the Pack in the NFC championship….Alex could prove why he was picked first and silence the critics once and for all! Congratulations fellas!!!
    Well deserved awards for both.
Aldon Smith is proving just how much talent he has, and backing up his #7 overall pick in the draft.
Gore, he’s our guy. The 49ers are his team. He is showing the world that not only can they know he’s going to get the rock, but that he’s going to be highly effective no matter what the opponents know. He’s the rock in this offense, and he deserves to be the Fed-Ex player of the week.

Ivoted at least 30 times for Aldon and Frank. Just can’t believe how far Aldon has come along in such a short time…just shows you how good our front office has and will be from here on out.

At first I was very Skeptical that we Drafted Aldon Smith, when prince Amukamara was available. Now I am very excited that we have Aldon, hes a best, hes beating out Robert quin of the rams.lol. He deserves a DRY award, n Chris Culliver should be mentioned as well, he did not allow Calvin Johnson to get a td. what a beast!!!! I mean CJ, is like 6-5, n Culliver is like 6-0. Damn!!!!! Where is tramaine Brock, he was leading the nfl in ints few weeks ago?
Anyways, GO niners, 6-1, n i predict after week 10, 9-1! yeahhhhh! this is our year! NFC WEST CHAMPS 2011!!

Congrats Men! You honor the red & gold, franchise, teammates, and us REAL FANS (except those over-critical fair-weathered fans who, incidentally, can now eat crow) with your standout performances. Keep it up and we’ll see you in Indianapolis in February. Go NINERS!

I can see more Pepsi rookie of the week awards for Smith, especially if he continues to get a sack or two per game and a handful of tackles. It’d be great if he got 15 sacks/60 tackles this year, and wins Rookie of the year. He’s a beast in waiting, future All-Pro if he gains about 15 lbs .of muscle/gets more exper. and develops the art of using his hands better on lineman……Gore, is the man! He has a heart of a lion, never [any] giving up in him, to gain an extra inch, huge drive!! Hope he lasts a few more years, with the help of Kendal Hunter taking 8-10 runs a game should help. Gore could still gain 1,400 yds. this year and win plenty more player of the week awards.

Its funny how so many people were bashing the front office and Baalke during free agency. Now look at the bandwagoners jump on board. I said it before the seasion started and I’ll say it again. As long as Alex Smith is a functionable QB the Niners will win the west and in the playoffs ANYTHING can happen. JH still hasn’t opened up the offense yet because of the lack of time together so watch out in the second half of the season things could get real exciting long as we stay healthy. GOOOOOOOOOOOO NINERSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

gore is still a monster, and aldon is only going to get better. and to think he is only 21 years of age. i couldn’t be happier with the way our team is playing right now. congrats to both of them. along with the rest of the niner team, u guys r making us niner fans very proud.the only thing we need to work on really is our handshakes!

Aldon Smith i watch on all his plays that he comes in and gets not only sacks but pressures the quarterback on almost every play. this is the 2nd best start of Gores career in my eyes.. i believe our line has really come together and changed the face of our team.. with that said Gore could have his best year. Harbaugh has made my wait for 49er dominance to return WELL worth it… GOOOOOOOOO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you see how many different plays we ran? Great job to the coaching staff. Way to mix up the play calling and take what the defense gives. Common sense football. Go niners!

Aldon Smith = Best player in the draft so far, and still has a ton of upside. He should have double digit sacks throughout his career. Frank Gore, as always is one of the best running backs in the NFL. Can’t wait for Aldon Smith and Chris Culliver to get experience. Think of how good both of these guys will be in 3 years, once they’ve played around for a while.

Congrats to both smith and gore for great performances that more then deserved some accolades. The league has taken notice and the rest of these teams are aware. We need the whole team playing hard from now till whenever this road ends. GO NINERS!

We just need to start aldon, i know hes still young but him and justin smith reach havoc on the left side. Aldon looks like Ware but really fast, I luv this guy on madden his acceleration is a 97 on it O_O

  28. By OldNinerfan on Oct 24, 2011 | Reply

Aldon Smith is the perfect addition to the family of Smiths we already have on this team. The first Smith is named Alex. The second is Justin. If you take the first half of Alex and the seconf half of Justin, you get Aldon. Well, pretty close. Anyway, Aldon fits right in with the 49ers.

    Go Aldon. Go Niners.

Amazing athleticism… Period. This team is ferocious… The beast Oline is setting in with comfort, I’m enjoying seeing Anthony Davis be a initiator, I was worried about his gentle demeanor at 1st. Aldon and Culliver are going to be to defensive All-Pro mainstays for 9ers. Really impressed with team as a whole. Not sure where our needs are for draft next year… honestly. This is a very deep team… Injuries won’t be a factor this year, even if they happen. They depth is prepared to step in, which most teams don’t have. I only see us needing an elite receiver down the road, however, I do believe Braylon can be that guy… He’s meshed very nicely…

Niners are looking sharp! not perfect, but there’s noone that worries me anymore. Even the pack looked mortal this weekend. should probably work on the depth at WR, but other than that the team is in great shape. Love the way hunter is playing, defenses never get a chance to rest… I believe… they could do it. Been a fan since diapers, and love that the red and gold is fun to watch again…

    GO 9ERS!!!
