Aldon Smith Earns Second Rookie Nomination

Posted by Taylor Price on October 18, 2011 – 8:17 AM

No rookie in the National Football League has more sacks than 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith. Furthermore, no player on the 49ers roster has more sacks than Smith.

The impact rookie recorded 2.0 sacks, four tackles and a forced fumble against the Detroit Lions this past Sunday earning him a second consecutive Pepsi Rookie of the Week nomination. Smith also sacked Matthew Stafford in the end zone for a safety and forced a fumble from Stafford on his second sack.

For the season, Smith has 5.5 sacks, second most for linebackers in the NFL behind DeMarcus Ware of the Dallas Cowboys, who has 7.0.

Smith won the award last week and needs your help this week. So vote early and often for Smith to earn his second Rookie of the Week award.

If Aldon would have played in the first 2 games like he has in the last 4, he would be leading the league in sacks.

by my calculation, thats 5.5 in two and a half games of real playing time. could be defensive rookie of the year… oh yeah and culliver is officially optimus prime-time!!

Time to give our GM the credit he deserve for this year’s draft choices as well as free agent signings.

Hindsight! I vividly recall my angst with Baalke and Coach during the draft. And again during Free Agency. But being an Alex Fan, loved the “bring back Alex” move. Back to draft: Aldon pick is turning out to be brilliant. The Culliver kid is showing out every chance he gets. Sum it all up – I tip my hat to the Niner brain-trust and vow to never, ever doubt you again. And beg your pardon. Crow is not to bad once you develop a taste for it.

Its almost unfair, Justin Smith Ray Mac and Ice in the middle, Aldon Smith on the outside and Brooks or Haralson who are both solid oh yeah and almost forgot those two little x factors known as Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman, its just not fair! LOL go 9ers!

Like willis said, we have alot of football left to play,,, But damn it feels good right noe to be niner.. We been waiting for this along time, if we clean up a few little mistakes we will make the big show again!! Coach and his staff, the front office have done a wonderful job this year in putting together a great start to a wonderful finsih of a season.. I have been there thru thick and thin, taken many blows with our team, and right now its feels good to be winning… We the niner faithful deserve this one…Lets keep up the great “TEAM” Together Everyone Accomplishes More”…..And like coach said, nobody has it better then us! Great Job Niners!!!!!!!!

GREAT JOB ALDON,,,,,You only get better!!! Bilieve that!! Its great to have you on the niner side!!

haley was a different player completely – far closer to ware than aldon smith. as for coverage, haley never covered anyone beyond the line of scrimmage and, neither should aldon smith. why make a player do something that detracts from his strength? that would be stupid.

  33. By jrparker on Oct 19, 2011 | Reply

Aldon is an obvious winner for rookie of the week honors. Two sacks, a forced fumble and a safety. Wow!!!

  34. By Hermie on Oct 19, 2011 | Reply

I too have to give the 9ers brain trust many kudos as I was wondering too what they were doing in the free agent area. I will also eat crow on that one. The DB’s have really stepped it up.

Drafting Aldon when they did was a great pick. We have really had some pretty good picks the last few years. Singletary and Nolan did not know how to use their personnel whereas Harbaugh has been stellar at bringing the team together. Aldon will only get better as will the defense as they play more and more together.

  35. By joe on Oct 19, 2011 | Reply

I’m just proud of the team and coaching staff , they have done such a great with so little time. Look around a lot of other first year head coaches or new staffs at all are struggling big time. But Harbaugh came in with a great staff, good draft and has done a masterful job that I believe Walsh would approve!
The players are just jelling so well and it shows on Sundays, they Rock, I mean all 3 phases every week! Awesome thats all I can say, oh where are all Alex haters?

Ya I thought so! Nothing say he’s playing well HUH haters.

    Niners for life!!

  36. By Peanut86 on Oct 19, 2011 | Reply

Aldon is a much needed presence on the end and he’s living up to that 1st round pick.
    Go Niners……

  37. By RJohnny49 on Oct 19, 2011 | Reply

Aldon has tremendous potential. He uses his hands well and is very fast.
I did see him dogging it on some plays and he needs to realize there is no
room for that in the NFL, but he can be very good if he works at it. hard.
His 5 1/2 sacks may just be a down payment on how good he can be.

This is a little off topic, but being a 49er fan for so many years and just seeing the big improvement we have made after a not so good decade i’m proud of the whole team and everyone who has played whether starting or off the bench. Also good to see Aldon Smith getting some good recognition. I remember at the beginning of the season I asked someone what channel were the 49ers playing on and they laughed. Im laughing now because we are 5-1!!! Niner fan for life regardless of the outcome! Kudos to the coaching staff as well!!!!

Aldon “the reach” Smith. Cuz he’s got long arms and everyone thought 7th pick was a reach. Look at us now haters.

HEY all you great 49er’s fan’s………

Haven’t you noticed that all the teams that our Defense in Scarlet and Gold have played this season are getting beat up and injured sometimes for weeks at a time if not for the regular season? A very good tough physical Defense. GO 49er’s !!!!!

at first when the niners picked a him at number 7 i thought we drafted him way too high but i guess hes playin to his potential

  43. By Mannco on Oct 21, 2011 | Reply

I hope Aldon continues going off and racks up 15 sacks this season, just wishing. In a year or two, w/more experience, 15 lbs.of muscle and strengh[he’s a litte lean but strong] ,also gets down the art of using his hands more effectively on lineman, he be a frickin Beast…and an All-Pro. Go-Niners !!
