Morgan Placed on IR; Swain Signed

Posted by Alex Espinoza on October 12, 2011 – 10:44 AM

The San Francisco 49ers today announced that they have placed WR Joshua Morgan on the Injured Reserve List and have signed WR Brett Swain to a one-year deal. The team has also released C Chase Beeler from the practice squad.

Morgan, originally a sixth round draft choice (174th overall) by the 49ers in the 2008 NFL Draft, had played in all five games this season, registering 15 receptions for 220 yards and one touchdown. Morgan has played in 49 career games (32 starts) and has tallied 131 receptions for 1,764 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Swain (6-0, 200) has played in 22 games (one start), recording six receptions for 72 yards. He was originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round (217th overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft, and was later released following training camp. Swain was signed to the Packers practice squad on 9/3/08 and then promoted to their active roster on 12/30/08. He spent the 2009-10 seasons on the Packers active roster. Swain re-signed with Green Bay on 7/30/11 and was released on 8/28/11.

A 26-year old native of Ashville, NC, Swain starred collegiately at San Diego State where he led the team with 58 receptions for 973 yards and five touchdowns, as a senior.

Beeler signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on 7/27/11 and was released following training camp. He was signed to San Francisco’s practice squad on 9/4/11.

Just do your best Swain. Good luck to u too Beeler. It feels weird to say Beeler because my last name is Beeler…lol not very many Beeler’s out here so we might actually be related so I wish we could keep him around.

Blaake has a way of finding players that you don’t hear about much but end up being able to contribute to our team. I know this guy will come in and be a contributor as soon as he steps on the field. I bet we got him for blocking as well.

  8. By 49er4life on Oct 12, 2011 | Reply

Good point. He picks up guys like the Patriots do. Players nobody knows about and turns them into ball players.

Were going to miss u Morgan.

Welcome to the 49ers Swain! I hope you are able to catch the ball, the knock on you is that you don’t always catch the ball. I hope you have a great year.

I have to say I am down about Josh Morgan. I know everyone is saying Josh was really a #1 receiver, on and on and on, but I tell you this much, through all the ups and downs Josh was there, through all the crud about Crabtree being hurt and a bust, and with Edwards hurt etc. But Josh Morgan has done very well for us and I hope the 49ers will take that into consideration and take care of Josh. I know the NFL stands for “What have you done for me lately” and it is a business, but Josh deserves better than what people are saying in other post and I want to see Josh back again next year. After what he’s done for the 49ers through the worst years he deserves the chance to come back and compete for his job.

Correction on Keith Wood’s post in sentence #2. “I know everyone is saying Josh was really NOT a #1 receiver, on and on and on…”

Morgan, out of all WR’s I was knowing you had something special from day one. Your contributions may have been unnoticed to some but not to me. You’ve always been a hard working athlete and I wish you a speedy recovery sir. To Swain, may your learning curve be quickly accustomed to our west coast style of play, Luckily for you, we have a bye coming up to better get you up to speed but I’m sure you’ll be a great fill-in! Let’s tear the roof off this Detroit Rock City. Faithful for life! Go Niners!!!

Its a damn shame. once a niner always a niner. lets get it guys.

I love Josh Morgan sad he’s out because he’s one of the “Guys”. I bet this came dowen to Swain not being a “Retread” and he probably besides the obvious, “Being Good” has GREAT Character, which is what Harbaugh is all about!!!!!!!!

    HEY CFR–Where you been hiding?

Welcome to the team Brett Swain. I don’t know who u r, but I guess you have to be alright if they signed you for year over TJ. Good luck and I pray for Josh on a speedy recovery. Where is seven years at can anyone tell me please? Go Niners!

“A team may place a player on injured reserve (reserve/injured list) who is “not immediately available for participation with a club”. These players may not practice or return to the Active List for the rest of the season (including postseason games) that they are placed on injured reserve, but are allowed to be with the team.”

Just maybe he can give use some insight about the LIONS .
Nobody knew about Wes Welker it could happen here
Have to been in agreement with JDS .

THE DALLAS GAME SHOWED SOME WEAKNESSES OF DETROIT. THEY MOST
LIKELY WOULD HAVE WALKED THE LIONS BUT ROMO SELF DESTRUCTED.
DET. QB IS LESS THAN ACCURATE UNDER PRESSURE. RUNNING GAME AVERAGE. GOOD RECEIVING CORP. (BUT NOT IF IT NEVER GETS THERE).
DET. DEF. LINE IS GOOD. SUH OVERPLAYS BUT IS STRONG. LB’s ARE GOOD
BUT NOT THAT FAST IN COVERAGE. DB’s OF DET. ARE AVERAGE OR LESS.
SHOULD BE A TARGET RICH ENVIORONMENT. SF SHOULD TAKE THE CONTEST.
JOSH IS A BIG LOSS! GOD SPEED YOUR HEALTHY RETURN. PUSH UP NINERS-
PLAY UP. THIS IS A THRESHOLD GAME. GO NINERS!

NOBODY HAS IT BETTER THAN US~

First Crabtree was injured, then Edwards, now Morgan. We’ve been dealing with injuries early on in the season, but keep winning games. Welcome to your new home Swain.

Now lets go put a whoopin’ on Detroit.

This guy is another Welker not just because he is white, he is tough as nails, Green Bay is loaded with WR’s so they had to let him go. Notice the 49ers also worked out TJ HOUSHMANZADEH, and they signed SWAIN rather than TJ. They also could have called T.O. But didnt, this kid will fill in nicely, mark my words

SWAIN KNOWS COACH OFFENSE SO THAT WHY HE CHOOSED HIM WITCH IS A SMART CHOICE

Swain was only signed because he is an ex pupil of Harbaugh and it really helps that he has spent his short career in Green bay learning the same west coast offense we run so that alone gave him the nod over the more experienced vets on the market.

  43. By Scott on Oct 16, 2011 | Reply

Swain was a OK ballplayer. Never could make the cut here in Green Bay where we only keep great players! We give away the average guys to desperate teams that only wish to have the talent and skills of the Packers. Glad you guys are so happy to receive a Packer scrub player! Niners couldnt hold the Packers jockstrap! GO PACKERS!

I would love to see swain or taylor make a break out with us this season and this sunday im not sure how they play because i never seen them play but baalke has a way of finding good players and harbaugh has a way of finding a way to utilizing players well in our offense so im sure they’re do fine hopefully Great!!Morgan you will b missed bro get healthy and fast!!Next man up GO N9NERS!!!!
