The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed TE Justin Peelle to a one-year deal. To make room on the roster, the team waived S Colin Jones, a 6th round draft pick (190th overall) of the 49ers this year out of Texas Christian.
Peelle (6-4, 251) was originally drafted in the fourth round (103rd overall) by the San Diego Chargers in the 2002 NFL Draft. A veteran of 137 games (66 starts), Peelle enters his 10th season and has caught 122 passes for 984 yards and 12 touchdowns. He played his first four seasons (2002-05) as a member of the Chargers before being signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Miami Dolphins in 2006, where he played for two years. Peelle spent the last three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, playing in 44 games (27 starts) and recording 37 catches for 370 yards and five touchdowns over. He was released by the Falcons on August 18, 2011.
A native of Fresno, CA, Peelle starred collegiately at Oregon, where was a semifinalist for the Mackey Award, given annually to the most outstanding tight end in FBS college football.
Peelle will wear jersey #81.
