49ers Sign TE Peelle; Waive S Jones

Posted by Taylor Price on September 13, 2011 – 5:19 PM

The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed TE Justin Peelle to a one-year deal. To make room on the roster, the team waived S Colin Jones, a 6th round draft pick (190th overall) of the 49ers this year out of Texas Christian.

Peelle (6-4, 251) was originally drafted in the fourth round (103rd overall) by the San Diego Chargers in the 2002 NFL Draft. A veteran of 137 games (66 starts), Peelle enters his 10th season and has caught 122 passes for 984 yards and 12 touchdowns. He played his first four seasons (2002-05) as a member of the Chargers before being signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Miami Dolphins in 2006, where he played for two years. Peelle spent the last three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, playing in 44 games (27 starts) and recording 37 catches for 370 yards and five touchdowns over. He was released by the Falcons on August 18, 2011.

A native of Fresno, CA, Peelle starred collegiately at Oregon, where was a semifinalist for the Mackey Award, given annually to the most outstanding tight end in FBS college football.

Peelle will wear jersey #81.

Alex is not the answer and when he is gone is when I will have my niners back as winners Alex will never take us to the super bowl and you know this guys so let’s stop wasting time and get the one of the rookies in there now and let’s not waste another year with him. I am getting sick of all you Alex jock straps supporters. stop sucking up because we have lost so much money on him.

I watched TV 49 a couple of years ago and I saw Alex tell the cameraman and his teammate to get the camera off of him and said he wasn’t going to an interview for him. I knew from that point this guys was no good for the team or as a person, the money went to his head. I have lost all respect for this loser off and on the field.

Actually, the 49ers had a pretty smart game plan: Keep the ball as long as possible, let the defense play on the opponent’s side of the 50, and use Andy Lee to get good field position. It’s a shame that they couldn’t punch it in in 7 tries from inside the red zone, but that should come, if they can continue to avoid turnovers. The don’t have to beat people, just outscore them. Got to continue to play smart football, and use triple tight ends.

Ninerman has a point… I’m not a Alex Smith hater, nor am I a believer in him… I’ve seen this kid Tolzien and he is the truth… Kappernick is gonna be a stud, but Tolzien is pro ready. I think every single position on the 9ers is solid with the only question mark being at QB… Look what the Colts are without Manning… Just imagine what 9ers would be with a top 10 QB…. My fellow 9er faithfuls… He’s stating his opinion, and it has validity to it.. I’m along with the HOPE Alex comes through, but when I see a coach not let him lose the game, it shows there isn’t a whole lot of confidence in him. At the game I seen him miss 2 wide open receivers in end zone 2 seperate times… Just sayin…. GO 9ERS!!!!

@Ninerman & CaseyJay: lets not pretend we know more about the play and capabilities of these players better than Coach H. sure I would agree, Alex hasnt performed to anyone’s expectations, but that shouldnt suggest we shouldnt support him as he is the appointed started…at the moment. I went to 4 of the open practices & 2 preseaons games and I dont see Kap ready to start, nor should he just yet, he simply isnt ready. Tolzien is a good QB, but we litteraly just got him. I’m sure Coach probably has him studying up the playbook and catching up. who knows, maybe he will be ready once or should I say “if” we need him later on in the season. So Let’s Keep the Faith. See you all this Sunday!!!! RED OUT!!! GO NINERS

Tolzein, the next Nate Davis? I bet ninerman was Nate’s #1 fan. And if Tolzein is so great, why wasn’t he drafted? ninerman thinks he is the next Brady after seeing him play well against our 2nd and 3rd stringers – many of whom have now been cut from our team. Smith is the best QB currently on the 49er roster and many fans really need to get with the program and support the team!

  31. By Utahniner on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

All of the “faithful” out there that say I love the niners but can’t stand Alex Smith are the same as everyone that says I support my troops but not our president. You either support the ENTIRE team or NONE of the team. With that said stomp out dallas!!!! GO 9ERS!!!

  32. By 49er4life on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

We have gave Smith a chance for 6 years now and he still hasn’t proved himself so were all going to keep on talking about it no matter what topic is up here. Thanks to our defense, Akers, and Ginn we beat a crappy seahawks team. Peelle might be a good pickup but so would a qb. Without a qb then what good is even having a guy like Vernon Davis. We might as well trade him for a good qb.

I HATE TO SEE HATERS!!!!! LETS KEEP THE CONVERSATION PROFESSIONAL AS THEY DO ON ESPN AND NFL NETWORK AND SO ON!!!

A lot of emotions being thrown out. I was pretty jacked up to see the locker room after the game. Harbaugh is bringing a new culture to the 49ers.

I can see it already. Getting his team mad and fired up already for next game telling the media he knows how the league perceives the team in other words no respect!!!

One way to wake up a team is to show them the doubters and let them prove everyone wrong.

Alex is temporary in my opinion and we have not see our franchise QB yet on the roster. We will most likely pick him up next year so lets enjoy the year we have right now. go niners

I really like the way Harbaugh and Trent are piecing this team together. They are continually upgrading even the smallest of positions building a team and that’s how you do it and run the a business. Continually shine up the bumpers etc etc.

My belief is, I hope all niner fans beleive in the team concept. everybody who is questioning the QB position. Calm down. There are only a handful of QBs in the NFL who is franchise worthy. Support the team. let past time be just that…”PAST TIME”. The 49ers need support. Ive always had faith. and alwyaz will.. to be honest, I feel sorry for any QB behind center for our team. They will be critisized and dissected reguarly bcuz of prior success with Joe and Steve. I think Jeff garcia never got the respect he deserved. We cant win them all.all we can hope for is the competitive and play with effort. If you are a true 49ers fan u will support the team thru thick and thin. I beleive in the players on the roster, the coaches and the front office. its alot of contributing factors to why our QB havent met expectations. Those are well documented..he has the talent, the mindset and the arm. to be successful. if not he would have been out the league. its about having the right mentor and stabilizing system. No successful team in history have won a SB or have remain competitive with inconsistancy with offense and/ or defensive systems. again support the team and remain poositive. Let things play out for a while. Me or nobody else knows what the future will bring. thats the exciting factor. wait and see Thanx to all the true 49ers fans.

Why is it that any time 49ers.com post’s comments the same people wanna keep talking about how Alex Smith is not the answer and all that BS. Look, we all know that already so make a comment relevant to the subject. A win is a win and thats all that matters.

As far as Peele goes, its good to have a true blocking tight end that can still catch. Imagine a 3 tight end set with Vernon wide, Walker and Peele on the ends Crab in the slot and big Braylon on the other out. What do you do with that.

GEEZZZ! Alex was so bad out there i wish Kapernick had played in the second half. When you are 1 for 12 for third downs your quarterback sucks. When the guy has been around as long as Alex Smith and he had Mike McCarthy and Norv Turner as coaches, there are no more excuses any longer. I understand that the free agency market was bad with the lock-out but I really do not care any longer. Please get rid of Smith sooner than later, i am tired of his excuses as well as the people that still want him on the team.

  46. By 49er John on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

One more thing, the 49er Defense is better than the Cowboys Defense. This game is a toss-up in my opinion. If the 49ers can run the final lscore will be, 49ers 24 Dallas 21

If you study QB’s you would know that it is all about where these guys put the position of the ball and it does not matter what string of players are on the field. Also it’s all about reading the progression of your receivers and continuing to look down field when forced out of the pocket.Scott Tolzien has it and some guys have to work real hard to get it.Alex just can’t do it guys.

okay, this little convo is bugging the crap outta me about this qb situation we have here (ninerman). Obviously Alex is not our “Super Bowl” QB. But he is the best we have “right” now. The reason he stayed is because he has experience. Has the most starts and had the most familiarity with the most recent OLine and recievers. And with the shortened off-season they really had no other choice. So deal with it for now, and route him on, because he does better with confidence. Im confident that he can get us to the playoffs especially with the weapons we have this year.

I was thrilled that the niners picked up Tolzien. I watched him in the last Charger preseason game. Looked very impressive. Alex Smith lacks some intangibles. Let’s see what he does for the first six games. If he is still making the same mental mistakes he will be on the bench. Which is where I predict he will be.

  61. By KDB on Sep 15, 2011 | Reply

Trent Dilfer won a Bowl, why? Because he had a great team. That’s what all great QB’S have had. But even good one’s like Dilfer who wasn’t great can win with the right formula. So can We. Is or will Alwex be great, none of really know, no matter what we say behind a key board.

And we certainly and that means none of us are really in the know enough to evaluate whether we have the pieces or not, no matter. PERIOD.

BACA 56-0? REALLY?? I WOULD LOVE TO SEE IT BUT THE PIGS AREN’T FLYING IN CALI. YOU NEED TO BE REALISTIC LIKE MAYBE A 10 PT WIN AND THATS PUSHIN IT!! AND ALEX IS A .500 QB THAT’S PUSHIN IT TOO!!!!

Why didnt we get kevin kolb in the first place.
If alex pulls off this win over dallas i really hop he dose
can you imagine what that will do for him . im a niner regardles
TP LUCK WILL BE THE 1 PICK if niners want him they will have to give up alot
you can bet alot of teams are planing for that right now
I realy hop they show the game on the local network.

WITH EACH GAME HARDBALLS WILL TAKE ALEX “DOWN FIELD” MORE AND MORE. HIS SYSTEM WILL UNFOLD AND DEVELOPE AS WILL ALEX. THIS IS THE
TEAM WE HAVE. DAMN GOOD ONE TOO! TO DEVELOPE AND COORDINATE THE
THREE PHASES OF THE GAME: OFF. / DEF./ SPEC. TEAMS. BIG ORDER FOR 14
PRACTICES AND ONE SCHEDULED GAME. SO FAR HE AND ALEX HAVE DELIVERED. PATIENCE “WE SHALL SEE” ? GO NINERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TURN LOOSE THE BEAST.

WE SHOULD HAVE BEAT THE COWGIRLS, OUR DEFENSE SCRE_ED UP, OUR 0-LINE DID BAD BUT OUR TEAM AS A WHOLE PLAYED REAL WELL, WE WILL LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES AND MOVE ON TO GREATER THINGS. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR COWGIRLS GREG, YOU WILL NEED IT. ROMO WILL BE IN A WHEELCHAIR BEFORE THE SEASONS OVER. YOU MAY OF BEAT US BY A “FIELD GOAL” LOL BUT WE HURT A LOT OF YOUR PLAYERS!
