49ers Sign RB Ian Johnson

Posted by Alex Espinoza on September 12, 2011 – 3:31 PM

The San Francisco 49ers today announced that they have signed RB Ian Johnson to the practice squad. To make room for Johnson on the unit, the team released RB Xavier Omon.

Johnson (5-11, 212) was originally signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2009 and spent that entire season on the team’s practice squad. After being released by the Vikings during the final roster cuts in 2010, Johnson served on the practice squads of both the Arizona Cardinals and Detroit Lions. He spent training camp with Detroit in 2011 prior to being released on September 3. A native of San Dimas, CA, Johnson starred collegiately at Boise State, where he was an All-American and semi-finalist for the Doak Walker Award.

As a person that has watch Xavier Omon play for four years and know what he can do I think the niners were stupid in releasing him. Nothing against Ian Johnson but Xavier is just a beast of a RB.

GO 49ers, looking good….great game against Seattle, Coach sign as many players fm Boise State as you can….Ian Johnson is a great catch, throw over the middle or on a slant and watch him go,even a screen play…Hes rough n ready to go….also someone should take a look again at kicker Kyle Brotsman, who led the nation just missed two important FG in a highly publicized game we lost…second chances…. really pack the Team with incoming rookies fm College Schools, they will get the job done and need a real Team to give them a chance….

Awesome! He looked great on both Detroit and Minnesota’s preseason rosters but was the odd man out in both cases.

what’s going on man another rb lastnights game goes to show alex is not the qb for this team he could’nt even score a td if it weren’t for the defence and ted ginn we probably would of lost, sign a vet qb harbough don’t put yourself in singaltary situation.

  10. By Longshot on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

    joe,
Did you even watch the game? Or did you not look at the box score? Alex ran for a TD. Diving through a couple of defenders to do so. He wasn’t Montana or Young, but he sure helped us win. No sacks, no ints., no turnovers, with a 75% for completions. He did what we needed him to do.

Probably would have lost? Do you have any faith in this team? We were up by 2 when Ginn put the game away with those TDs.

alex did his job off managing the game with no turnovers. the big plays and coverting on 3rd downs will happen just taking time learning the new offense. once crab15 is healthy to go with edwars davis gore. its going to be difficult to stop the offense. alex looked good moving in the pocket escaping pressure. we have the most athletic defense in the league to controll any offense. keep on rollin into week 2 niners # 1

Why are mot trying to sign David Garrard in stead of having Alex Smith as out QB.

  16. By brad on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

give alex a chance. we were running the ball in the red zone. he can’t score if he doesn’t get the call. He had 0 turnovers and rushed for touchdown that showed leadership and heart. He didn’t leave us high and dry to go to some other team. He stayed to right the ship. If any body boo’s him this year they need to go apply for the job and show us what they got.

Niners are probably looking for a quicker back to be prepping the D against every week. just a tool to sharpen the team with.

  18. By Joey on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

Ian Johnson is an intriguing sign. For those who want the niners to look for a QB…are you freaking kidding me? Where do you expect to find a starting QB available as a free agent (other than David Garard of course)? It’s not like quarterbacks grow on trees…

  19. By ninerman on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

If your sick of watching Alex win against weak teams don’t worry he will show his true colors in the next five games this guy does not know how to read the D plus he can’t throw in tight window he is not the man Scott Tolzien has played in a pro style offense and will challenge CK for the # 1 QB spot when Alex falls down for good. Mark my words people!!!!!!

Wow…reading the comments posted here show how little the posters really understand where we’ve been as a team over the last 5 years. Personally, I’ve never been a big fan of Alex Smith, but I’m certainly not going to pin all of our team’s troubles on just Alex. The fact is, he’s played his entire NFL career under the tutelage of Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary; two individuals who collectively couldn’t coach their way out of a paper bag.

I think we’d all agree it’s not very likely he’ll be a 49er after this season is over, but I think it’s equally clear that every losing season we’ve had since coach Mariucci’s tenure was the result of failures from the management down. Now Alex and the rest of the players are actually getting “coached” and not just screamed at, and I suspect that by virtue of the change in coach Harbaugh’s management philosophy, they’re all going to be better this year.

No…Alex Smith is not a marquee quarterback, and certainly doesn’t posses the intellectual greatness or leadership qualities of Joe Montana or Steve Young, but the young man does have considerable physical talent, the drive to win, and the desire to continue to learn and improve. He’s gotten virtually no support or examples of true leadership from his coaches since he’s arrived in the NFL, and I imagine that wherever he ends up next year, he’ll do well.

The overall dismal play of our beloved 49ers is not just Alex Smith’s fault, and I think we’re gonna find that hiring coach Harbaugh will prove to be the change that puts us back on the right path.

  33. By Hugh Kizer on Sep 12, 2011 | Reply

To all you so called 49’er fans, give it a break. Harbaugh will turn this team around but it will take more than one year. Don’t you think the 49’ers held back their offense for their next opponent? Tony Romo is beatable, the defense has to put pressure on him and he will fold. This team will not reach the Super Bowl this year but have faith and give them time.

omon was pretty good i thought, so not sure why they let him go for johnson. @Joe.. as for Smith.. he did score a touchdown you fricken idiot, did you not see him give it everything he had to run it in? He made a good decision when the old Alex would have thrown a pick or thrown it away… he was 15/20.. pretty darn good to me… only thing needs to improve is red zone offense inside 10.

Jim Harbaugh is a very smart coach, He does things for a reason. Coach does not let on to anything, to media, to other teams. He keeps everything under wraps.I think Huhg hit it on the head with Harbaugh He holds things back for other opponents aces in the hole if you will. This is the perfect coach for Alex Smith,Collin Kaepernick, and Scott Tolzien, all very good QB’s in their own right. It was a wish come true when the San Francisco Forty Niners re-signed Alex and drafted Collin Kaepernick out of Reno Nevada where I had lived for 22 years. I have a feeling About this year …….Look all the negative energy some of these so called faithful fans waste here is just THAT …….A WASTE OF TIME and ENERGY.
Lets all be positive and cheer on our team in a positive way. Because what we blog here I’m sure will not change anything that the Management for the 49er’s already has in place or is planning to place. Lets go San Francisco Forty Niners. Lets enjoy Harbaugh’s Team take over the West……..

There sure are alot of snivelers on this board. Alex Smith has taken a 7 year beating at the hands of Coaches that were as fit to be head coaches as they are to be Kings. Coach Harbaugh and his staff are the real thing. Alex Smith has won the starting job and as his confidence grows,he will improve and be the QB he could have been. There isn’t a QB in the league that could have been successful or survived in the NFL in the same circumstance. One thing most of the snivelers don’t see is Alex Smith has come back time after time to prove himself. If he never makes it as a top NFL QB then he has shown me guts that not one of his detractors even understands. He has guts, character and has earned his spot on the roster. He will have a great year if the line can protect him.

Lots of people are mad Alex wasn’t cut and the next Montana wasn’t brought in. I think Harbaugh looks at the whole picture,.. down the road vision. Just 1 week in the season of his first year is to soon to harp on him, maybe mid-season or the end of the season. Go niners

It may just be that Oman was given a chance too shine for another team I just hope its not one of our opponants lol. Who knows his agent may have even asked for this. Just a thought. On the QB situation there has been many medicore QBs who after several years all of a sudden just peak and become household names. Seems to me we should give Alex his chance after all it is his 7th Offensive coordinater in 7 yrs. Anyway this is my first time here and will end bye saying wat to go team. And GO 49ers.

Wow, so many fans uptight about a practice squad signing? And as for Alex, he is only signed through this season, so what’s with the “another 7 years” talk? I’m not a big Smith fan, but if you brought in Garrard, his inconsistancy would drive you just as nuts! He has better stats than Alex, but blows games with turnovers just as badly. That’s why his ex-coach’s job is on the line. I’ll put my faith in Harbaugh being able to develop the two rookies behind Alex this season and get ready for the future.

I have supported smith since he came to us, I really don”t thinks all our loses are his fault. I don’t think that Brady or Rogers could have played with our last 7 coordinators, coaches or a weak offensive line that we’ve had in the past. I think Alex has the tools, he needs some consistanicies throughout the coaches to get confidence. My real problem has been with Frank Gore. He is not the rb of 3 years ago. Ever since the time he lost his mom, his performance has slowed significantly. He is very slow, no burst out of the gate. I’m glad we signed another RB. Gore has lost it, he has lost vision between the line. I see other running backs caring linemen on there backs to get extra yardage. Gore gives up too soon. its our field and all Gore was doing was slipping all over the feild.

Bruce and Ninerman, it’ s one thing to express your opinions about who you think we need to win but what bothers me is when you count our team out before they even played. Go play armchair quarterback if you feel that it helps your self worth, but cheer for another team already!! You guys are obviously lacking something in your lives to be so pessimistic. Bandwagon, unfaithful fans like you are pathetic and make me sick!! When I’m sitting there on Sunday drinking my beer and watching the game, win or lose, I will still be a true 49er!! You two losers might as well cheer Romo and the rest of the cowgirls on. Have fun!

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU MIKE, ALL THEY DO IS CRY, NINER HATERS NEED TO GET OFF OUR TRUE 9ER BLOG AND GO FIND ANOTHER TEAM TO CRY ABOUT. THEY DON’T KNOW A THING ABOUT FOOTBALL. THEY ARE PROBABLY FROM OTHER TEAMS!

THE D ENDS AND A. SAMUEL FROM THE EAGLES AND THE TEAMS IN THE NEXT FIVE GAMES ARE GOING TO EAT YOUR BOY ALEX UP!!!!!!! HE CAN’T BEAT THE GOOD TEAMS WITH HIS ARM SO WHY WAIT AND WATCH THE SAME THING EVERY YEAR. LET’S GO SCOTT TOLZIEN.

Glad to see Ian getting signed, he is a great person, I have met him on many occasion. Also glad to the 9ers finish out a game for once. can’t say how many games they have lost taking the lead late into the 4th qtr just to lose it in the end. 3rd down conversion HAS to improve though….

  82. By ninerman on Sep 13, 2011 | Reply

WHEN SCOTT TOLZIEN TAKES THE NUMBER ONE SPOT YOU WILL SEE WHY JIM GRABBED HIM.HE HAS RUN THE PRO STYLE O WATCH THIS GUY ON U TUBE AND WATCH A LEADER BOYS. JIM KNOWS QB’S THAT’S WHY HE IS ON THE ROSTER AND NOT ON THE PRACTICE SQUAD BOYS. HE HAS PLANS FOR SCOTT.

So much bickering about Alex and niner haters… On Ian Johnson, if you care about his numbers since most of us don’t know of him and since we won’t see much of him, here goes. [maybe this is why Harbaugh cut Omon]….Gore, Dixon and Omon all run [combine times] a 4.65- 40 yd. dash, and bench 225lbs.- 17 times…. Hunter runs a 4.53 , benches 22 times…I. Johnson runs a 4.45 – 40 yd. dash and benches 225 lbs. – 26 times. I know, just crunching numbers and Johnson is going on his 4th team since 2009, just saying. He’s the same ht./wt. and 40yd.- time as Marshawn Lynch [give or take 5lb.], he’s the talented r.b. from 2007 Cal Bears, now with the Seahawks. Who knows what Harbaugh has planned for this guy, but for “right now”, I’m going to trust his judgement. “Obviously”, Johnson isn’t as talented as the r.b’s mentioned above. Go niners

I pray that A.Smith plays good this year, but for some reason he just does’nt look like he knows what the d is bringing at him. if you look at other qb’s they have time to stand in the pocket and look at the field. the o line needs to give alex a little more time so he can start throwing some deep balls. also field goals against better teams will not win games, they need more touchdowns than field goals if they want 2 win against teams like eagles, bucs or lions. come on lets go niners !!!!

  87. By rjd 9ninerfan on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

To frisco62 hear what you are saying i truly belive coach H is working
on that . I read that smith was given the go ahead to call an audiable
at the line.Is that correct remenber when Bill took over the team it didnt happen
    overnight for him either

AS,will be AS some days hot some cold.He will win us some games.Harbaugh’s game decisions may win us a couple more.Defense will be a constant.Special teams has already punctuated one in the win column.Don’t lean on Alex. The only real problem we have is our inconsistent O-line.All those 3 and outs last year & this game were because we could not get any line push for a lousy yard for Frank.Gore, who has proven he can make positive yards but if you can’t even push your opponent back 1 foot then how can you gain any yardage on the ground. We had several chances for 1st downs & even sustained drives on the ground but our O-line seems to lay down a game untill they see themselves fail on film then come back the next game.Looks like our O-line needs a good arse whoopin before every game.

if OL protects AS niners will beat dallas. i believe JH will open running give AS more time to throw. this i hope will shut up ninerman for a couple of games.

Alex needed a coach and now he’s got it. Watch what happens when a good coach brings the best out of a player. What do you think Walsh did with Montana.

  91. By ny49er on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

we need to score fukin touchdowns period

  92. By ny49er on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

running up the middle is not that effective i noticed by watching that game and keep in mind that dallas has a better defense than seattle does

  93. By ny49er on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

keep in mind that if it wasn’t for ginn i think we were losing that game, thank you TED!

Without the 2 returns by ginn, we still would’ve won by 2. . .just saying

  95. By ninerman on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

If you study QB’s you would know that it is all about where these guys put the position of the ball and it does not matter what string of players are on the field. Also it’s all about reading the progression of your receivers and continuing to look down field when forced out of the pocket.Scott Tolzien has it and some guys have to work real hard to get it.Alex just can’t do it guys.

  96. By ninerman on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

I am asking the question, do you guys think Alex will take us to the superbowl?

  97. By ninerman on Sep 14, 2011 | Reply

Don’t drink the cool aid folks. Alex Smith seems like a nice guy, will never be a top NFL QB I have been around to many years and can see , he does not cut it , it’s in his eyes, his presense on the field. I am concerned he will get eaten alive on Sunday.Like them or not (I CANNOT STAND THE COWBOYS) They have a good front 4 and will blitz the crap out of this OL

  100. By gary potter on Sep 15, 2011 | Reply

ninerman: answering your question can AS take us to SB. my answer probably not with the OL in front of him. but i would rather sink with him than play 2 quarterbacks that have no chance at all. JH knows what he is doing i have more faith in him than i do with you and your ideas.
    go niners

Alex will crack under pressure guys he’s a faithful and faithful’s never change, so ask yourself this If don’t try and new kool aid flavor you will never know how good it is. peace!!!!!
