49ers Statement Regarding Candlestick Park

Posted by Taylor Price on August 21, 2011 – 7:29 PM

The following statements were issued from the San Francisco 49ers, the NFL, and San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee and Oakland Mayor Jean Quan on Sunday.

49ERS STATEMENT ON INCIDENT AT CANDLESTICK PARK

“Our entire organization is hopeful for the recovery of the victims from last night’s violence.  These kinds of events are disquieting to everyone in the Bay Area community.  Today, we are working to assist the San Francisco Police Department in any way possible to understand how and why this happened.

The San Francisco 49ers will continue to gather information regarding the incidents reported, through ongoing communication with the San Francisco Police Department, stadium security and medical personnel. The 49ers’ primary concern has always been, and will continue to be, providing a safe and enjoyable environment for our fans on game day.

We will be working with the SFPD and efforts to conduct investigations into these matters.”

NFL STATEMENT ON LAST NIGHT’S GAME

“We deplore the activities of a handful of fans at last night’s game between the 49ers and Raiders. We pledge our full support to Mayors Lee and Quan and to state and local law enforcement agencies. We are carefully reviewing the events to make sure we have a full understanding of what took place. We will work with our clubs and law enforcement agencies to ensure responsible fan conduct at all NFL games and a safe and enjoyable game experience for all fans in attendance.”

MAYOR EDWIN M. LEE & OAKLAND MAYOR JEAN QUAN STATEMENT ON VIOLENCE AT SAN FRANCISCO-OAKLAND GAME AT CANDLESTICK PARK

The following statement was issued today by San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee and Oakland Mayor Jean Quan with the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders in regard to violence that occurred at Saturday’s Preseason Game at Candlestick Park:

“Violence will not be tolerated in either of our stadiums. The incidents at Candlestick Park last night after the San Francisco 49ers versus Oakland Raiders game are completely unacceptable and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Fans come to our stadiums to enjoy an afternoon of football, not to be subjected to intimidation or violence. These games are family events and the types of images we witnessed last night have no place in our arenas.

Public safety remains our top priority and we are doing everything we can to ensure that when fans come to our cities and our sports arenas they have a positive, safe and enjoyable experience.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families for a speedy recovery.”

Suspects are believed to be in custody in regard to the more serious incidents last evening.

Witnesses are being asked to call the San Francisco Police Department tip line at (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD with any information.

Note: Once more information from the SFPD investigation has been conducted, the San Francisco 49ers will hold a media briefing to answer questions and provide more detail on the events of Saturday night. We expect that briefing to happen in the next couple of days.

The niners should not host oakland in pre season anymore. There is always problems every year and it has to stop. I didnt attend last night because i cant enjoy myself there with constant fights. Im a season ticket holder for 30 yrs and none of my other friends went either due to the raider fans. We kept our tickets and ate the full price. what does that say? Even the cops dont want the raiders or their fans there. PLease NFL and 49ers orginization stop hosting this horrible team/orginization.

As an old Niner fan, I think it’s appalling that so called “fans” can’t behave themselves at a game. What the heck is the matter with you people; you act like cave men and women. IT’S A GAME, FOLKS, A GAME!

This kind of violence is what makes it hard for these venus to continue to host these kinds of events. If you want to continue to enjoy these events please use you best judgment when attending.. ..

Maybe if you didn’t encourage your fans to drink from 10am until the game ends, you would find a less rowdy crowd. I went to my last game a few years ago when the number of drunks was so disturbing and the beer soaked floor around my seat so disgusting that I realized it wasn’t worth it. Most of your fans are drunk before they even enter the stadium, due to tailgating. I never understood why you would have to be so freaking blotto to enjoy, or even focus on a game.

I am furious that a handful of thugs can ruin a great sport for the rest of the fans. To the Niners, I hope you never consider sharing your new stadium with the Raiders. Let old man Al build his own. Personally I hope the Niners never played the Raiders again unless it is to kick their butts in the Superbowl. I’ve been a fan since the 70s, yes I was an adult even back then, I definitely won’t be going to any games until the Niners are in their new home. CUT ALEX! GO NINERS!!!

“Disquieting”. Are you kidding us? Your organization is responsible for providing a safe, enjoyable venue for fans and security was obviously woefully inadequate. My son had asked for me to take him to a game this year but based on last night’s fiasco he no longer has any interest. This area was quick to judge the McCourt ownership with the Dodger incident earlier this spring – the Yorks should be held to the same standard.
And do you think this will excite the citizens of Santa Clara as they decide whether they want to make large commitment to bring the 49ers to their town? Time to step up, accept responsibility, and make material changes.

The mayors’ statement was incorrect. There was violence in the stands too. These two teams should never again play each other in the preseason. Honestly, there are a disproportionate number of Raider fans that go to the games to simply cause problems. Keep the violence in the East Bay.

The whole scene was sickening. I’m very concerned about the rapidly deteriorating environment at 49er games. I have serious reservations about taking my two children — who love 49er football — to this stadium and subject them to foul language and physical danger. The PR statement from the 49ers is nice, but not nearly enough. What I’d like to hear more about is how this organization is going to SIGNIFICANTLY crack down on thuggish behavior. That parking lot felt like a prison riot. Absolutely unacceptable, and if the 49ers don’t get their arms around this challenge, there won’t be any families willing to come to these games.

Fan’s well being vs. Profit. As long as limitless alcohol is served, SF 49er management and the NFL are partially to blame. It doesn’t take much to see how drunk people are through out the parking lot and inside the game. Do something real. Words don’t cut it in my book.

  18. By Toad on Aug 21, 2011 | Reply

Until alcohol is not sold in the stadiums, these incidents will continue

SF 49ers management/security and SFPD must put a cleat stop to violence at candlestick. O fot one pay hard earned dollars, that could or should go to more prudent need, but we choose to continue to support our team despite a miserable record over the decade. But I and I’m sure othet will not continue to pay if we are subject to unprovoked acts of violence while attending candlestick. Nip this in the bud first time…dont try to save money at the exspense of a family’s safety.

I was watching the news and reading the newspaper and the two guys that got shot were Raider fans and they think that the reason they got shot is because one of the guys was wearing a F#$! the 49ers t-shirt. I’m a Niners fan but I hope they catch those Niners fans that did the shooting because we all deserve to be able to go watch our teams play without any harm coming to ourselves and our families. But at the same time those Raider fans had to know something would happen to them for wearing a F#$! the 49ers t-shirt.

I am sad to see this kind of BS go on at a sporting event, sorry.

I didn’t renew my season tickets because of the type of crowd that I had been seeing attend the games because there are MANY DIRTBAGS that go to these games, not all but MANY. And many of these people get all fired up over the dumbest stuff because they don’t understand the game, they just act out their sorry lives and I got tired of seeing it, and I’m not bringing my 2 daughters and wife to that environment. You can’t put these negative type of fans or people together and serve boos, you can’t do it, period.

I hope there is total hard prosecution.

Connecticut fan over here, only been to one game in San Fran, Its so hard for me to make it cross country to see my 9ers play, I try to buy tix to the closest venue to see them. I’ve been to the giants, bills, patriots, and eagles stadiums, with the eagles being by far the worst of all (having a hot dog thrown at me). Always being the visiting team, I’m used to a little friendly banter, but this is for fun, why you going and shooting people? The game I went to was 2 years ago when we got stomped by Atlanta, and I saw falcon fans, no one was fighting w them.

I’d expect if from a steelers or eagles fan, but not the 9ers!

What’s more incredulous is these statements put out by the 49ers, Mayors, and NFL that are clearly politically correct. No one, and I mean no one can isolate this one incident on just one random occurance of violence. This has been building for quite some time and like all politicians and owners of businesses, the right words are used but not nearly enough action is used to back their PC statements up. As much as I enjoy the game of football and love the 49ers, like KDB, I have seen this trend growing for some time and I will not subject my family to this kind of baseless ignorance. I don’t know if anyone in the 49ers organzation reads these posts, but if the organzation, the NFL, and the Mayors are serious about dealing with this issue rather than just stressing about a public relations fiasco, then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Prosecuting those involved (if caught) is a good start, but something must be done in and around the stadiums to insure the safety of those in attendance. The City, the organization has an opportunity to set an example. Let’s see if they can truly take the lead on this issue and make a lasting example. If not, then their statements aren’t worth a roll of toilet paper and you can bet, familes will begin to avoid their product like the plague.

  28. By NV fan on Aug 22, 2011 | Reply

Metal detectors would not have changed things here – the shooting was in the parking lot and the fan beaten unconscious was not hit with a metal object (at least no news reports indicate that). Also, a slogan T shirt does not invite violence – or do blue jeans on women invite rape? Really? Stop blaming what they wore. It could be what was said that led to violence. I must admit the violence in the stands and gang types going to the games have us reconsidering our season tickets. I understand your decision, KDB. Meantime – until they get rid of Alex Smith (what is wrong with you Yorks?!?! ) the team won’t ever improve so there is another reason to dump the season tickets and not renew next year.

My wife and I retired five years ago, and moved from the Bay Area. Before we retired, we were 49er season ticket holders, and held those season tickets for years. The las five years we were season ticket holders, we quit going to 49er/Raider games solely due to the actions of Raider “fans”. This did not start Saturday night….It’s been going on for years. Now it has escalated to gun violence. It HAS TO STOP.

As a season ticket hold from So Cal, I drove up for every game with my son to enjoy the Niners, win or lose. But over the past few seasons, I have noticed the overall crowd turn from good fans to more rowdy. I don’t mind a little fun in the parking lot and stadium, but the thug behavior is getting outta control. It’s like I’m watching Radier games back in LA. Pre-season is a joke and season tix holders unload their seats for pennies on the dollar. A flood of cheap tix for this game contributes to more thugs. Get rid of the Raider/Niner pre-season or let season tix holders opt out of pre-season tix. Should all change in a few years when the Niners will jack up tix costs and add PSL with the new stadium. Most of us real fans who are not rich will be priced out of the stadium anyway.

Where the incident took place is only part of the matter, this could have just as easily happened in the streets or at a bar. What does matter is that the 49ers organization, the NFL and the Mayor’s offices of SF and Oakland need to realize that actions speak louder than words and it won’t be long before fans expect to actually SEE that something is being done. That being said, personal responsibility does factor into this, is it really the job of the league or the 49er’s club to babysit grown men and women by telling them that they have had too much to drink? I say that the ultimate responsibility lies with the person that chooses to drink too much. It’s a shame that the whole will feel the repercussions of the actions of a few, throw the book at them and set an example, but remember that the majority of fans are responsible adults!

I completely agree with everyone here that is disgusted with these Raider fans. I am a long time 49er fan but I grew up in Los Angeles and I thanked God the day the Raiders left. We still have plenty of Raider fans here and most of them do not know anything about football they are just out to see who they can bully. I am a 49er fan first but my second team is anyone that plays the Raiders.

The 49er/Raider game just highlighted was has been going on at Candlestick for the last 5 years.

The violence has escalated. The foul mouth language has escalated. The tension in the park and the parking lots has escalated. The security for the fans has not escalated.

I am done purchasing my season tickets.

I think it is so sad for those oif us who really go and enjoy this game. I am a 49er fan and my husband is a Raider fan and this is the only game that we enjoy where both sides play. There are so many fans from both sides who enjoy this game and look forward to it every year. Maybe there needs to be more security and support around the tailgating and post game activities. The fighting does have to stop, but we all need to be able to attend a good game and enjoy it.

  40. By 9erssteve on Aug 22, 2011 | Reply

I think what needs to be remembered here is that while yes it is the responsibilty of the home team to provide security at games, the shootings were perpitraited by VISITING FANS AGAINST THEIR OWN.

It’s all well and good trying to blame the Yorks for what happened but they are NOT RESPONSIBLE for the Raiders or the element THEY ATTRACT.

What happened is a terrible shame, but what would also be a shame would be for the good name of the 49ers to be muddied by serious incidents that were NOTHING TO DO with the 49ers fans or organisation. It wasn’t 9ers fans shooting each other it just happened at our ground! :(

It saddened me deeply when I heard about this. Notice I didn’t use the words “shocked” or even “Surprised”. This is how we have declined as a society. To commit this kind of violence behind a game or a team playing a game is pure insanity. The fact that the visiting team was the Raiders almost ensured something bad would happen, given the fanbase there. The violence is not new, however, just vastly intensified.

I had to basically fight my way out of a riot that broke out in the stands some years back when the Saints were in town. And in that one, it was a group of alchohol-soaked Saints fans that started howling at a group of alchohol-soaked Niner fans. I could feel it coming but didn’t get up quick enough to leave. The booze is more than half the problem. Perhaps they shouldn’t sell it any longer.

Anyway, haven’t been back since. Maybe when the new stadium gets built in the new location I’ll try again.

I’m a season ticket holder and was looking forward to taking my two sons to a game or two this year. Now, I feel terrible to tell my kids that they have to wait (until who knows when) to experience their first football game. As a season ticket holder and huge faithful fan of this game, I spend a lot of money to attend these games so I can enjoy the excitement of playing catch, eating food and having fun tailgating while waiting for that moment to watch the game from my stadium seats. It’s a pretty sad day to now know that this will end for me and maybe for other season ticket holders.

The 49er ownership should be ashamed of themselves for never focusing on the safety of their fans. Don’t blame the 49er fan, the Raider fan or fans in general, it’s the scum that attend these games that ruin it for all. I have Raider fans and we get along just fine watching the games. But, it’s a shame that the Yorks will never see this from the fan’s perspective and why should they when they drive up in their Limos and sit in their box seats. Jed, you are very lucky to have a team that has sold out for years and you should thank your uncle Mr. D. for that. But do know that if you don’t take this as a serious matter you will end up with empty seats for not paying attention to the hand that feeds you.

If this was a Seahawk/49er game I don’t see this happening. But to just blame Raiders fans alone isn’t totally realistic. I’m a long time niner fan that LOVES watching games in person. But our Niner “Faithful” have been going down hill for a while. Call it gang bangers who like wearing red or some sort of City/Pennisula territorial thing… our fan base has turned into a macho “Raider-like” fan base the last few years and us as fans have to protect our team and game by not putting up with this type of behavior. Instead of rooting on the fights and posting them on-line…say something to a cop…tell the idiots yelling at people to shut up…do anything other than cheer on their behavior otherwise they’ll never stop.

And to the SFPD who patrol the stadium and collect overtime…. please stop grouping up in packs of 10-15 hanging out, looking at girls. Walk around and do your job. Seriously how does someone discharge multiple gun shots without ANYONE knowing?

And to the Yorks…time to step up big time or feel it in the shorts by the end of Fall. As a father I will NEVER bring my kids to another game again and that breaks my heart. I know I’m not alone here… black out’s coming soon if you don’t fix this problem quickly.

I can only echo many of the great comments already posted about the violence. It was ridiculous and we are in violent agreement about the contributing factors. I would only add that it’s hard to have confidence that the 49er organization can competently address the problem when on the same night they’re much hyped ticketless system failed miserably and the parking lot logjam persists for yet another year. Come on guys….pull your heads out!

How come this kind of crap keeps following the Raiders? When the Niners go to oakland and win usually, 49er fans don’t go instigating fights, and I’m not surprised a Raider fan would be stupid enough to wear an idiotic shirt like that. I’m glad this will be the last pre-season game with the Al Davis bunch, because bad karma follows this franchise. And to the numbskull 49er fans who decided to act in violence, WAKE THE F*** UP? We’re the better more respectable fans in this rivalry, all you did was tarnish the legacy of the San Francisco fans.

My husband and I are lifelong fans and in our second year as season ticket holders who come from Reno, Nevada (Go Kap!) to be part of the Faithful at the Stick. After having gone to SF @ Oak with a large group of friends last year, where we had a mixed experience, we were expecting better at the Stick and had invited my brother-in-law (a Raider fan) and sister-in-law to go with us. By the time we got on our bus home, headed to Petaluma, we were exhausted from the stress of the crowd and the non-stop fighting in the stands. From our Upper Balcony seats, we saw a horrible act of violence in the north Red Zone seating that caused a young family in front of us to leave the game before half time.

We won’t return to either SF or Oakland for this rivalry, despite the fact that it is a convenient time of year for us to meet up with Bay Area family and friends to gather to go to games. I understand that it is cheap and convenient for both teams and the NFL to schedule this matchup during pre-season, but I certainly hope this matchup will be ended out of respect for the game, the franchises, and ticket holders as well as the entire great Bay Area region.

While we’ve enjoyed our season tickets and haven’t experienced this level of insanity during any other home games, we certainly won’t attend this matchup in the future, and will be just as happy to let our seats go empty rather than subject our family or friends to this.

Ladies and Gentlemen. These incidients were not driven by the fan bases of either organization, rather a few ignorant people that don’t know how to comport themselves. Add the alcohol factor to this; add those who don’t know how to playfully talk smack without getting disrespectful. I am a true fan and have been so since conception. It’s not any organizations’ fault either, it wasn’t Al Davis or Jed York out there, it was a few ignorant folk. Maybe we should reconsider how we allocate our security and/or police services or lack thereof.

    Two things;

    1) Violence at Candlestick is at an upswing because the team has declined, and there are more opponent’s fans in the stands. Once the team improves, the season ticket holders will stop selling their tickets and start attending.

    2) Responsibility belongs to those involved. We are always looking to blame someone or an Organization. The folks that participated in this ugly scenario are to blame. Period!

Its so ashame to go to game and yet you have to look over shoulder to see if your going to meet up with drunk people that wants to do violent things and run away after they hurt the innocent ones.maybe we all should go to these kind of game armed too for our security oh,you may want to be licence to carry one first and foremost you dont want to get in trouble.May God be with the victims so they may recover quickly, Yup Double The Law Enforcement,

Battle of the Bay, great football game and great rivarly and too bad a minority of fans, who in all probabilty do not know what a football looks like, can ruin the game for us that truly enjoy football. My son is a Raider Fan because at the age of 7 took him to a Raider practice and he saw H. Long, and that is all it took, he is a life long Raider Fan and I will always be a 49er fan, since 1961. Sometime ago was my last time at a Raider Football game, when I noticed a group of fans or should I say gang, fight, drink beer, fight, and drink beer. My question, why waste the money on a ticket to see a game you do not watch in the first place, you can buy a lot more beer with the price you paid for a ticket?

My question for the NFL and the 49ers, why cancel the game when a few rule changes will correct the situation? No beer sales in the third and fouth quarter and I know that is drastic but some fans, some of us actually buy tickets to see the game, wow, what a novel idea, what a game plan. No tailgateing after the game starts – sorry no reason to tailgate, you are there to see the game. If you come to tailgate – good – leave when the game starts. More securty in the parking lot and more security in the stands, there is not any reason a person, especially the major of San Francisco or my wife, must watch the game and fans fighting, where was security?

I was shocked and sadden to hear of the violence at Saturday night’s game.
Even MORE when I found out that it was my nephew that was shot 4 times in the stomach!! For wearing a tee shirt??? I know he will pull through this – he has a 10 month old son (my great nephew) who took his first step today. He is waiting for his daddy to come home and share these moments with him. Thank you to all for your prayers. Let’s stop this violence – PLEASE

I have gone to my first NFL game at SF vs Seahawks.. i have seen some fans get into each other faces. in other games there will always be fights no matter where games are played.. people come to the game early to have a tailgate party and start drinking. Most of those people would be drunk or had too much to drink before entering the stadium. i think security should decide if anyone who is drunk or had too much to drink should not be allowed in. or police and security should enforce no drinking allowed in the parking lot before games.

DO NOT SCHEDULE THIS PRE-SEASON GAME WITH THE RAIDERS ANY LONGER!…..it just gives the thugs a reason to act out and show their stupidity—I’m a a season ticket holder of the 49rs and do not attend these games…my daughter went to this one and says never again–the fights in the stands started n the 1st quarter and continued until they left mid-way in the third quarter—its a WWF event now, with real acts of violence and blood taking place

What happened at Candlestick is just another example of what;s happening in our society as a whole. If you disagree with someone about the team they root for, their political party, their religion, what color of shirt they might be wearing, just start shooting no matter who you hit, innocent or not. I think they should stop all pre-game drinking in the parking lot, I know this will be difficult, but they need to at least try. This wasn’t just about Raider fans as I work with several of them and we have no problems needling each other about our teams, but we never let it go too far as our frienship means more than a football game. I hope they find those responsible & send them to prison where they belong.

With just about every major sporting event on the planet televised live in hi def now days, why would I subject myself to being in the crowd with losers like that? You get what you pay for. In this politically correct world, I guess it would be wrong to say the ethnic groups name, involved in the Dodger stadium, and Candlestick incidents, i’ll just leave it at that.

Where is the statement from the raiders organization?

  61. By LouieV on Aug 22, 2011 | Reply

I appreciate Mr.York’s letter and I know he’ll be doing all he can to make the games safer…HOWEVER, as a season ticket holder for 10 years I will NOT renew my season tickets next year if they start with sobriety checkpoints after the games. Not because I’m afraid to get caught, but because it will make traffic getting home a nightmare and for me would take the enjoyment out of the gameday experience.

Fighting over a game is ridiculous, especially by the fans. But what can you expect when the Raiders come to town. Not only do they have a floundering team, coaching staff, and team owner, they have deplorable integrity amongst their fan base. Simply said, the raiders organization and fans are the skid marks on the underpants of society! Dissolve their team or just get them the hell out of California.

Don’t kid yourselves, alcohol isnt the problem. These are just morally reprehensable people who think they got something to prove. Fans see “the enemy” and they have to be violent? Its football, go shoot each other in the streets. Don’t put kids in danger, for God’s sake. The thug fans on both sides can go to hell, we don’t want you here.

Back in the 70s I had season tickets to the Raiders and was both a 49er and Raider fan. There was no problems at Raider games. Remember the Niners and Raiders playing a pre season game. I rooted for the Niners and never felt intimidated. When the Raiders moved to LA and back to Oakland they picked up a new element of fans. I am still a 49er faithful. Raiders lost me when they went to LA and got this new breed of fans.
As for 49er fans. I have observed bad behavior on there parts also, but nothing compared to what transpired Saturday night. Hopefully this was a one time occurence. Fans have a right to feel safe and root for their team without intimidation regardless of who they are rooting for.
Hopefully Jed will not consider sharing the new stadium with the Raiders after this incident. Dont think the city of Santa Clara should be burdened with the element of fans that were at Candlestick on Saturday.
    Go Niners, playoffs in 2011.

these crimes have nothing to do with the game or it’s fans. Just a bunch of cowardly bangers using this platform as the “street”. Professional sports better be able to clean it up or by the way side they will go! Sad..Very Sad

I was there…it was ridiculous, we wanted to watch the game, but got so distracted by all the fights.. I knew the end of this would be both teams not playing each other anymore… I love the rival, dont mind some trash talk, but the fights need to stop… that is just stupid!!! HATE IT!!!!

I am a little tired of hearing about how the niner organization is at fault for the drinking in the parking lot. The last time I checked every team in the league has fans tailgating and drinking before the games. It is unfortunate that ignorant idiots come to the game to start fights. I just bought season tickets and I am excited to go to some games this year. I go to at least two games a year and have had a great time. I also enjoy tailgating before the games to save on cash and be around true fans of the game. Talking trash is part of the game but it is the cry babies who can’t handle it who tend to get macho and behave like morons. I have never liked Raider fans because they act like idiots and have a chip on their shoulders because the Niners have always been the favored franchise in the bay.

Raider fans should buy tickets to thier own home games so they dont get blacked out.The silver and blackout strike again.

They shouldn’t end the rivalry because this type of violence can happen in any game. What they should do is find a way to have a true “visitor’s side” and keep most of the opposing team’s fans there. This way they don’t feel threatened by others as much and will have less problems in the restrooms near their section. Add the no alcohol policy in the parking lot after kickoff and violence will be kept to a minimum. Same for Oakland Coliseum when the 49ers come to town. I don’t it’s too hard for either team to come up with solution for pre-season ball.

As for what happened Satuday night’s game between the 49ers and Raiders was toatally out of hand and uncalled. What’s up beatiing up an opposing team fan. Police and security should ban anyone for life if caught causing unruly behavior inside and outside the stadium from attending future games. If necessary have a courtroom judge and jail at the stadium. Maybe fans would wise up. It’s NFL football game, not gladiator fights.
