49ers Sign QB Josh McCown

Posted by Scott Kegley on August 17, 2011 – 3:48 PM

The 49ers signed QB Josh McCown to a one-year deal.

McCown (6-4, 213) was originally drafted in the third round (81st overall) by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2002 NFL Draft. He has played in 47 games (31 starts), completing 610 of 1,058 pass attempts for 6,584 yards, 35 touchdowns and 40 interceptions, while adding 127 carries for 569 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

In 2010, McCown played for the Hartford Colonials of the UFL, completing 114 of 202 pass attempts for 1,463 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

McCown, an eight-year NFL veteran, has played with the Cardinals (2002-05), the Detroit Lions (2006), the Oakland Raiders (2007) and the Carolina Panthers (2008-09).

The 32-year old native of Jacksonville, TX, starred collegiately at Sam Houston State, where he passed for 3,481 yards, 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, as a senior.

I’m a die hard Niner fan, but damn whoever does the player recruitment has done a terrible job, but eventually it is the responsibility of the owner to enforce things & make sure the right people are doing the right work. We waited during the draft & that killed us, and now they’re desperate and they have to find a fall guy to blame at the end of the season (Josh McCown) so the heat won’t be on the owner. You really think pp don’t know this. That young kid in the owner’s seat don’t know jack! Freaking inherited the position, didn’t earn it!

Although, I have to say, that’s close to if not over a 60% completion rate. And look at the teams he’s played for. The pocket was probably collapsing at all times and who did he have to throw to? I take back my previous comment and I’ll reserve judgement.

Unlike Culpepper who was over the hill, McCown never was on the hill. Now maybe we can wait for Derek Anderson to get cut so we can pick him up too. I really don’t understand this move at all.

I dont think we will suck but you have to wonder what they were thinking here. I thought the idea of bringing in a vet was to share wisdom and knowledge with the young guys. In order to have some wisdom wouldnt you need to have displayed some kind of success? Alex has put up better numbers that this guy.

Hell I’d be happy if we picked up a high school QB after 6 years of Alex Smith. I think my nephew could do better than 2 of 7 for 10 yards. McCown couldn’t be the worst pick up ever. Alex Smith was picked up 6 years ago and I think he holds that title.

WHY????????? Every year for the past Five Years I have been so Hopeful someone within the organization will wake up and grab a legitimate QB in free agency or trade, and EVERY YEAR it’s the exact same thing! I even sat there last week expecting a different result out of Alex Smith and once again, DISAPPOINTED!!!! Now McCown??? Come On Guy’s, Wake Up! SO SICK OF IT! McCown, REALLY??!!?!!?! GET A QB!!!! Also, if the management of the 49ers reads these, let me give you the definition of insanity; Insanity is when you do the same thing again and again and expect a different result.

I cant believe all the wrong moves the niners have already made this year, I was all for Harbaugh, but if this is what he is going to bring to the table the next five years are going to be rough! More and more it looks like the niners are planning on being horrible just so they can get Harbaughs boy Andrew Luck. I agree with you Andy! Troy Smith is better than all of these guys and we should have kept him! He was actually hungry out there on the field…

  31. By JButt on Aug 17, 2011 | Reply

And the beat plays on! Jim Harbaugh and this new regime is really showing a negative pattern here. If I’m one these receivers I’m reading the headlines thinking my career is in jeopardy playing for this team. And if after six seasons of seeing Alex Smith on game film UNDER perform isn’t enough to know he isn’t the answer, we got way more problems in our locker room then we know……

This is starting to disturb fans generating great hate and discontent. I believe the 49ers a proud franchise is on the verge of collapsing. There are really no reasons to sign McCown, if it is to fill a roster spot maybe we should have picked up an offensive linemen. Not another quarterback who has proven how much he can not play and how many times he has been past around. Niner’s organization start thinking football and quit picking up every penny you can find. Get the big bills rolling for some big play making players on our roster.

You guys crack me up! Is he a bum? Yes, pretty much, but what did you expect for a third string QB (a “veteran presence”)? Troy Smith was on the team last year, Culpepper worked out for the coaching staff, they saw what those guys could do and obviously weren’t impressed. McCown worked out, and obviously showed them something. If another, more promising “veteran presence” becomes available I’m sure they’ll take him for a test drive too. But until then, relax, it’s an emergency backup.

  48. By JD708 on Aug 17, 2011 | Reply

Why does everyone get so up-in-arms about the 3rd string QB. No good QB’s are available. Relax the niners are going to struggle this year regardless. They could sign Tom Brady and be awful this year. Teams need talent, and players need time to learn schemes. The niners have neither talent or time, so we have to deal with reality. McCown is not a bad signing because carrying a 3rd QB is necessary with the way our o-line is looking and having a guy who has played a down in the NFL is better then what we have currently.

Also being a GM is not as easy as pointing at a player and getting him on the team. I think everyone thought J Johnson would be a good pick-up for us but TB was unwilling to trade him. By reading what half of you are saying on every post I thank God that you are not at the helm because you would drastically over-pay (via signing or trade) for mediocre talent.

Was really excited about harbaugh but some real bone head moves so far. Putting all our eggs in one alex smith basket again. Why not trade smith and a 3rd or 4th round pick for hoyer or matt flynn. They’ve played iin the regular season and looked really good.

I am a life long bay area raise SF 49er fan and always will be. But I continue to be amazed at the stupid decisions the head office is making. How Smith can keep fooling the office and now it seems he’s fooling our new coaching staff. He’s not a starter and not a team leader. I’m tired of putting my hopes in the Colts, because of bad coaching and bad administration.

  56. By Rob79 on Aug 17, 2011 | Reply

We have to trust in the coaching staff that they see something in this guy. Journeymen QB’s in the league have gone from average to Pro Bowl quality under the right tutelage and situation. For example, Rich Gannon wasn’t anything to be excited about until he had talent around him, the right coach, and right system (west coast offense). He went from being a yawner to an exciting Pro Bowl quaility QB who led the Raiders to a Super Bowl. I was surprised by the pick up myself but you have to remember that the coaching staff is just looking for a #3 veteran QB to be plugged in for emergency situations.

I am getting so tired of you the Niners faithful whining about everything. Maybe if you spent more time supporting the team and its players rather than complaining they could build some momentum. Maybe it is the fans that need to change. 6 years of booing Alex Smith hasn’t helped so maybe you could cheer for him.

  63. By Corey on Aug 17, 2011 | Reply

@JD&)* I would not have signed anyone. I happen to like Masoli. The only thing that worries me is why we spent 810k on a washed up never was. We have plenty of un proven QBs on the team already. If you bring in a veteran isnt it for mentoring the younger players. I dont hate Alex either and we do have talent on our team it just is going to take time to learn the offense.

  64. By z9ers on Aug 17, 2011 | Reply

here we go. yea not even a game in the books and people jumping ship on our coaching staff. were you guys the ones calling for nate davis if you were maybe he can play in the ufl and you can find a new team to be so called fans of. relax people we were never in the market to get a guy that could take us to the playoffs as our third string qb. third string qbs are there for emergency purposes only. so if you thought that cullpepper was going to come in and start or even compete you have no idea what is going on.

  65. By Mannco on Aug 17, 2011 | Reply

In hindsight it seems the 49ers shoulda kept Troy Smith. The pick-up of McCown for the minimum isn’t too bad for a 2nd string QB.If Alex comes out flat, hopefully Josh has the new offense down and can get to 8 wins and a playoff game. It sounds like Alex has been good in practice lately, woohoo. I guess the 9ers don’t see any decent QB’s being released in the up coming roster cuts and didn’t want to pull the trigger on others available?. I think fans need to be a little patient. Afterall , it’s been one pre-season game and about 15 practices with [ another] offensive system [5 or so in 7 yrs] and another new coach. I’m betting on Harbough bringing out the best in Alex and the offense and by mid-season , we should have a good idea. Patience.. and this is” It” for Alex…Go Niners !!!

I usually buy tickets to 3 games. Lately have all been losses. Held out on buying because of the lockout and then held off because of lack of big moves in free agency. They took an offense that couldn’t score and added a rookie quarterback and now a nobody to the roster. Yea i know he’s third string, but so are kaepernick and smith. We need a starter. Signing edwards was a nice pick up but without a good qb he is worthless. Get the best thats available. Vince Young, Kevin Kolb, or make an offer for Orton when the chance was there. They aren’t great but all are better than what we have. then instead of going out there and getting asomugha they sit around. They’ve done good helping the secondary since, but have done nothing for the terrible offense. Its rediculous.

My impression of the “Couch GMs” for the 49ers:

The niners should trade there 1st round pick for P Manning. Then they should trade their 2nd round pick for Osi. Then they should trade T Mays for A Samuel straight up. Then they should trade there 1st round pick in 2013 for Chris Johnson. Harbaugh will turn Crabtree and Edwards into Rice and Taylor because he is way smarter then any other coach that has ever lived. In next year’s free agency the niners should sign Calvin Johnson, Fitzgerald, and the NFC probowl O-line. Then the glory days will be restored! Go niners!

This another season for the most part thats go down head first into flames. I understand some moves but not to get back some people like Spikes is just nuts. Then the whole QB problem we don’t sign any one!!! Everyone is running to eagles to play with Vick and I remember one coach that got fired that want him on this team, but the hell did he nows. I didn’t see this season getting any better i just don’t he do all the great things in practice but if you don’t on the field it doesn’t add up at all. We want a team that you know every Sunday there going to be in for a fight now the this team is nothing but a joke all we have to hold to is the past with young rice and montana. We can never build on the future until the managament gets there things another sad season i can see it again wish we had the lock out

the 49ers coach said he was considering bringing in a veteran QB after watching both 49ers QB’s performance against the saints so i guess Josh is his answer to the QB situation and not as a back-up as some have blogged. If the 49ers still plan on signing Culpepper and trading Alex then this all makes since, maybe? Solve this QB quagmire or this could be a real ugly season for 49er fans and fire Greg Roman.

I hope Harbaugh can pull off a miracle with this line up because that’s what it’s going to take. Alex Smith has demonstrated year after year that he’s not an NFL starting QB. Why do we continue thinking this is going to change? It’s like investments, when your stock is way down and not coming back, at some point you have to bite the bullet, accept the loss, and get rid of it.

McCown is the second coming of David Carr, Nate Davis, etc, and all the has-beens who never were. Not to worry. The crummy 49er offensive line blocking can’t stop a popsicle from melting. Snyder got pushed into Smith and Kapernick all night long. Rachal had his usual set of “look-out” blocks, and Davis is still being beat by smaller defensive ends who are leaving him in the dust. On the other hand, Iupati is a beast. Unfortunately, he plays w/a bunch of pussycats. Oh, well.

Yes, I want my 49ers to win and I am willing to give Harbaugh time to do his magic. Remember, Bill Walsh did not have a winning season until his third year with the 49ers. I believe with the additon of Goodwin and a year of playing time for last years rookies, our O-line will start to gel nicely. I am excited they have addressed some needs on the O-line and with some continuity…no injuries…they will come together nicely and start giving the QB more time in the pocket. O-line is one of the hardest to master and they have also gone through many coordinators and playbooks.

I wish him the best, again! I remember the days of old when the 49ers used to be so aggressive in free agency and the draft. They gave the fans something to look forward too…They really missed out on some really good QB the last few years.

Sing and Nolan are probably laughing…I hope Kap takes over he has the tools to become an exciting QB; however, I would of liked to see him mentored by proven vet…

I’m a pretty avid watcher of the NFL in general and I’ve never heard of him. Probably cause he’s played for 3 of the top 5 worst teams of the past decade.
For the past 3 years I’ve been crossing my fingers hoping they’ll draft a QB. There have been plenty of good ones the last 3 years. They did finally get Kaepernick, but I’m not sold on him yet.

I guess it comes down to bad karma for the niners for hogging the two best active QB’s at the time in the form of Montana and Young. Now they get to hold the two worst active QB’s.

You know what? This doesn’t bother me because now Kaepernick has another brain to pick, and another QB to prove he’s better than in pre-season. And if Alex Smith still wants the job now is the time for him to step his game up because he has more competition that wants to be the guy taking the snaps from the center.

I am definitely not an Alex Smith fan but lets face it if he doesn’t peform this year he is definitely GONE! I am willing to eat crow if he can start to show improvement. I understand that he was under a huge blitz and the OL must get much better..but when safeties are lining up at the line of scrimmage and blitzing he should be able to make that read and at least throw the ball away??? Again – no use in complaining right now because he is going to start!!

About McNoun – I just don’t understand why they would bother. I know that Trent Edwards hadn’t had a great NFL career yet but he has tons of potentetial and has shown some flashes of decent play. If I am going to take a chance on someone, why not a local kid, Stanford Product that was highly praised by Bill Walsh! When Trent Balkke shows me that he has the ability to judge talent as well as Walsh I won’t be questioning some of these moves that don’t seem to make any sense?????

He is no Brad Pitt and if the Raiders start their 2nd team defense than Alex will do some what better. Laughable we heard the same thing about this guy every year. “he looks good …we had a good practice …his team mates say he practices real well. Alex just said in the paper that he is getting better at throwing the ball……have i been on another planet. He is an NFL 6 year QB and he says he is getting better at throwing the ball against the 2nd team defense………what….wait what…OMG. I am a Niner fan and i can’t stand the way Alex ponsi schemed the niners out of 90 million dollars. Who pays someone 90 MILLION DOLLARS. Then waits and waits and waits for results. All you Alex bloggers can’t tell me that you would expect your job to pay you any money if you told em well i should get better if you get me another supervisor ….or hey pay me now and maybe in 7-10 years ill perform pretty good. Come on it’s stareing you in the face he has basically robbed 90 million dollars from the Niners and you defend him saying well if we pay him some more and root root for the line to be able to hold off the blitz for 15-20 seconds he will take us to the superbowl. Too much too much …..he made no effort to even try to throw to the hot route and there was time watch the game plenty of time to throw to the hot reciever and he stood there lookin 20-30yards down field like a rookie. Sad times when the fans cant agree about a bust at lest the Raiders figured it out I wonder why they didnt wait 6-7 years to get rid of their bust.

People I am just as disappointed as you are, but lets take a positive to this.

    1. He is a third string quaterback, for one year, most likely will not play
    2. With this addition there is no quarterback drama, we know who will start
    3. He will be gone most likely next year

Lets just focus our energy to what we got, lets support Alex cause thats all there is to our quarterback scenario, and lets hope for the best. I know people want a Sam Bradford draft, but believe it or not, Alex actually had better stats then Sam.

We can only hope that the Raiders don’t watch the Saints game and do the same thing to us. Come on fans this is the NFL not popwarner where if you cheer more they might make that play….these guys are suposed to be the best of the rest and all the colleges that play football have tons of players that would love to play in the NFL and it’s just inconsieveable that this can happen in the NFL. How does a guy with no accuracy …no skills to read the defense…no skills to even protect himself from harm get picked #1 and then stink it up for 6 years and still have people say wow he just distanced himself from the rookie today and be serious that this is the guy who has to play at his best to barely edge out a rookie

Why do people here always use some kind of statement like this when they want to bash their team: “I have been a huge fan for a long time!” (So I must know everything, right?). You know, my Dad is a huge fan and has been every since the 49ers where accepted into the NFL since the AAFL folded. I have never heard my Dad bash his team or anyone of the players. He has always been the one who will give someone a chance to prove themselves. If they don’t, he will say they have to go but he won’t kick them while they are on the ground. My Dad has seen so much more ups and down being a 49er fan than most of you on this list and I never heard him act the way you all so on this list. So just because you are a huge fan does not mean you should slam your team. We all have rights in this country so you have the right to leave and support another team if you want. So, give Harbaugh a chance to prove himself!

I’m a true to the core niners fan, I might even bleed burgundy and gold. Why didn’t we try to get a good veteran QB. Alex Smith is not going to work out haven’t they realized that by now. I think we are in for yet another awful season when we should be winning our division hands down. We will go as far as our QB takes us which will be to another losing season. I think the owners aren’t into winning anymore and that’s why they don’t care about our QB situation. We signed Josh what’s his name we might as well let the coach play QB we might have a chance. I use to take Jeff Garcia for granted but wish we had him now.

This pick up is irrelevant anyway. I don’t think we have anything to worry about. They sign him to “try” and add some more competition at the QB spot, he fails terribly, and we are back to where we started from when McCown is dropped. I wouldn’t sweat it.

THEY SAY THAT IS THE DEFINITION OF INSANITY BUT IN THIS CASE IT IS THE DEFINITION OF BAD MANAGEMENT! THE ONLY GLIMMER OF HOPE IS THAT HARBAUGH IS A GOOD QB COACH AND COLIN HAS TONS OF POTENTIAL! BUT UNTIL THE 49ERS PUT A WINNING PRODUCT ON THE FIELD WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE CRITICAL OF WHATS GOING ON

  196. By JohnnyBGoode on Aug 19, 2011 | Reply

McCown offers NOTHING as a back-up! It would be different if he had a couple of successful seasons under his belt…and some knowledge, expertise, or positive experiences to share with the other QB’s (neither of whom have it either!). Since Alex’s chances of doing well are SLIM…and Colin has NO EXPERIENCE and has only RAW talent, we really needed an older, and wiser QB who could step-in when needed …which would be pretty often!

  197. By faithfulmeister on Aug 19, 2011 | Reply

O-LINE, O-LINE, O-LINE !!! Look at N.E., Indy, Pitt, N.O., they all draft O-line first to protect their QB.
As for our 3rd string choice, I’m sorry, . . . other than that the price was probably right, I just don’t see that adding value. Getting Chad Pennington as a veteran free agent safe pair of hands would have been better.

so he made a couple of bad throws out of desperation, those are things that could be worked on if given the chance, how come alex can have 8 chances but troy only had one,and it was under an egotistical self absorbed power tripping coach who was bitter because he knew he was losing his job….not to mention troy did all that coming into the locker room halfway through the season, and not even knowing the playbook. I used to watch these guys faithfully, all five super bowls. A dedicated fan, even to the point of getting angry when they lost, exspecailly to Green Bay.. those cheese heads…! The last few years though, I try not to get to involved because they have become more like the Tampa Bay Bucks of old rather than the Forty Niners of old. 1st things 1st: Let’s not hate so much on J McCown bc he’s now in 49er uniform, which means he’s part of the team.

2: I don’t share the same enthusiasm of the 49er QB recruiter.

3: 5 QBs is REDUNDANT. I hope COACH understands that each QB isn’t going to receive the same pre-season experience necessary to get a feel of the West Coast Offense, WHICH MEANS that A Smith will once again become starter bc he has the most exp. in SF WHICH MEANS another disappointing season is most likely underway.

    4. I certainly hope someone in the 49ers org reads this and understands the frustration of the team’s current fans, including myself.

  222. By roughrider on Aug 20, 2011 | Reply

While McCown is not being signed as a starter, all QBs on a roster should be able to push a starter or alternatively be able to mentor a starter (why Culpepper was brought to camp).McCown will do neither of these things. We have to pray Smith or Kaepernick step up big. More depth in the receivers (Edwards) and another year of RB experience to spell off Gore will hopefully keep teams from going blitz crazy and give our QBs a little time. It looks gloomy early, but dammit, I’m an optimist…. go 9ers!
