49ers Sign TE Nate Lawrie

Posted by Scott Kegley on August 14, 2011 – 10:14 AM

The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed TE Nate Lawrie to a one-year deal.

Lawrie (6-6, 255) was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the sixth round (181st overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft. He has played in 26 games (five starts), registering four receptions for 43 yards. Lawrie has played for Tampa Bay (2004-05), the New Orleans Saints (2005-06) and the Cincinnati Bengals (2007-08), while also spending time with the Philadelphia Eagles (2004, 2010) and Baltimore Ravens (2008).

Lawrie spent two seasons in the UFL, playing for the California Redwoods (2009) and the Sacramento Mountain Lions (2010), recording 26 receptions for 252 yards and one touchdown.

The 29-year old native of Indianapolis, IN, starred collegiately at Yale and, as a senior, set the school record for receptions by a tight end in a single-season with 72.

didn’t you just sign a te? what about a veteran o-lineman or qb?

Is it me or at this point a vet qb or o-line help more of a need, call me crazy?? I knew we should have gone after Kolb!! S@#T

Yeah, not sure if signing a TE was necessary, I agree with building on the OL. I think Smith could stand half a chance if he had good protection.

What a TE? how long is it going to take before we build the line, completely agree with everyone OL

How many TEs do we have?

  10. By Richard Weddle on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

This is just to fill a practice spot people. we have the two of the best TE’s in the game in Vernon and Delanie.

  11. By mnkyz04 on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

are u fn serious? a tight end!? what about davis and walker? this is bs! we dnt need a tight end!

  12. By corey on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

This is exactly why Vernon davis was only being used as a blocker
    his first 2 years.

The next priority should be signing a quarterback, a vet to teach, and the offensive line needs some time together to gel into one solid wall.

  14. By Red&Gold 4 life on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

And I think that makes 6 tight ends. I smell some cuts coming on the roster soon

  15. By niner4life on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

alex smith sucks! damn another year with him at qb means last place niners!

  16. By Bezrecognyz on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

Hiring a Vet for teaching the other quarterbacks is not neccessarily a good reason to bring one in. We do have Harbaugh as a vet quarterback. Clearly our O-line is at a struggling point. We are missing blocks, not picking up the blitz, definitely not adjusting to the blitz. Definitely needs to be more structure on the O-line.

put snider at right guard period. quaterbacks cannot produce under the pressure the saints put up. i know it is 1st preseason game but ol sucked last year also.

  18. By Tarcules on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

First year I did not renew tixs,,…Next time I spend a couple thousand dollars it will be to see “Professional Football” players not “players learning how to block frontline? or QB that is still growing? New Coaches New stadium,..I still lov my niners but will not throw my money away.

  19. By fredammer on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

i agree we need a vet qb and more portection on the offives line preseason is a way to see who will progress i belive that the49ers will beat the cowboys the second realgular seaon game

This is just the first pre season game and some of you are already pancking, do you remember last year we went 4-0 and didn’t make it, this year they see what they need to improve and Jim will make sure at the begining of the season he will have it down pack, so don’t worry because Daunte and Colin will get it done. please get rid of that sorry Alex who can’t throw five yards

  22. By shayne on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

Go Find JEFF GARCIA and BRING HIM BACK!!! all he does is win, he won here!! in fact he was our last winning quarterback who brought us to the playoffs!!! Dont even think of signing Dante Culpepper, i will throw up if we do.. he sucks!!

  23. By Frank on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

I think they’re looking for a TE who can block…they’re working out Culpepper, wouldn’t read too much into that, but it shows they’re looking for a vet QB. As for OL, they have plenty…just need to get their act together. One lopsided preseason loss is NO reason to panic!

  24. By ninerkevin on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

Daunte Culpepper is at 49ers headquarters tomorrow.

QB: Go With a winner and not a “?” Bring Jeff Garcia Back!
Look at his stats running the West Coast Offense

Culpepper is over the hill and not even close to Jeff.

Jeff “lives” down the street and he will “fill” the stadium.

Jeff Garcia is the Best Option … He will take you guys to the Division Title and Beyond.

  28. By vinferno on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

Any quarterback would suck behind that oline 3 seconds and your crushed from every angle. Signing another qb will mean just another injured niner. If we sign culpepper it will be for injury insurance. Hopefully we get the blitz pickup thing worked out before game 1

  29. By gorilla on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

Maybe we are getting all these TE’s to try to find someone who can lead block better than moran norris. The guy needs to be replaced already.

  30. By Dynasty on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

The O Line was horrible! Until they start to gel together, there won’t be any qb that can produce and stay healthy back there. And you really to get a 3-4 qb in Kolb?! Please.

  31. By ny49er on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

we need an o-line damm it!!!

  32. By Reecan on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

Just beat the Raiders and all will be good again…. well at least for awhile :)
I’m sure the Raiders are licking their chops seeing that we couldn’t stop the Blitz. If I were the Raiders I would Blitz, if I were the 9ers I would make them pay for it. :)

    A. Smith = Does math equations before throwing the ball

    C. Kaepernic = Still has to learn the pro offense, need better foot work and shorten his wind up.

    J. Masoli = Will be the starting QB. He has ability familiar to S. Young but hasn’t seen playing time yet. He is the surpriser as long he doesn’t get caught stealing form the 49er orginization he will be alright.

    D. Culpepper = Past his prime but will bring good knowledge to the young guys.

Bethel-Thompson = who? your typical tall QB with no experience and no recognition to even matter in the NFL.

OL! OL! OL! thats what we need! watching the game only big mike iupati was great

We need Sims back, or else we’ll be saying that famous Star Trek line:

    “He’s dead Jim!”

  41. By Bill on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

Seriously you need to stop calling yourself fans if you’re still crying about Alex Smith. The decision has been made. Besides with the OL right side as weak as it is right now, you could put Brady, Manning, Vick or even Jesus back their and they are going to get sacked.

  42. By gary potter on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

to frank: did you watch the game?? ol blocked just like last year didn’t and couldn’t. if we keep the 5 in line up we are in trouble. davis chilio staley had terrible game. we should think about getting a true llt and move staley back to his normal position at rt.

  43. By Jose on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

We should have never let D. Baase go we should have signed him. Letting Baase go was Harbaugh’s biggest mistake as the Niners head coach .

  44. By Gordon on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

Culpepper?? Don’t they have better quality unemployed, NFL QBs out there?
Talk about having to “scrape the bottom”.

  45. By vawoody15 on Aug 15, 2011 | Reply

The Niners will get better. Look at the guys that they brought in so far. Every one of them is discribed as “Non-stop Motor” or “relentless effort”. I would rather have 53 average guys who worked their A$$ of than a handfull of “Superstars”. It may not be this year and it may not be next year, but they’re building th right way!

  46. By alex_fn_smith on Aug 15, 2011 | Reply

What the hec.. alex sucks, never good under pressure he is not the one.. period… only suggest that Harbough role Alex out more, like walsh did Montana… he has to throw on the run.. We have no veterans on the club… Spikes. left because we have no qb… clements left no qb, and gore is not happy..no qb.. we didnt get it done in off season…

anyone whining about Alex Smith not producing in the game against the Saints is and idiot.

No QB would stand a chance with the level of blocking that we had.

As for bringing in a veteran qb as a mentor we have one. His name is Jim Harbaugh.

And just to point out we had no chance against the Saints in the first place.

They are already better than us, we couldn’t block worth anything, and they had one of the best player run training camps in the league.

Give it time. You can’t win right off the bat. Those expecting Harbaugh to just come in sign some players and immediately take us to the playoffs is an idiot. It isn’t that easy.

This aint college!! move on to NEW QB… look at his INTERCEPTION RATIO VS COMPLETIONS!!! ITS CALLED THE NFL!!! NOT FOR LONG!! ALEX.. Its over!!

As usual over the years lately our defense has to win games.. hopefully against the raiders we will prevail… as long as the offense dont have 30 .. 3 and outs… if i were on defense i would be hot!!! so frustrating to see our team go thru this … we need a dang gon qb!!! tired of talking about the past of the great 9er teams..etc… weve had 5 coaches 5 qbs, and a whole lot of Coridinaters sucks
