Game Blog: 49ers at Saints

Posted by Scott Kegley on August 12, 2011 – 3:43 PM

It’s finally here 49ers fans…the first game of the 49ers preseason and playing the Saints will be a good test right out of the gates for Jim Harbaugh’s team.

This is my first trip to New Orleans and the Superdome is definitely a large stadium. Last night we has some delicious gumbo and jambalaya that did not disappoint.

Stay tuned to this blog for quarterly updates and discuss the game in the comments section.

I just spoke with Ted Robinson for our weekly Teddy Football segment. Starting next week, you can send in your questions for Ted on our blog, on Facebook or in Twitter by using #TeddyFootball. Click here to listen to the interview.

FIRST QUARTER:

Things didn’t start out way the 49ers would have liked, going three and out in their first series. Smith was hit hard on 3rd down by DE Will Smith. Roman Harper picked up the ball and ran it back, but it was ruled an incomplete pass.

It wasn’t until the Saints 4th possession of the game that either team got a first down and it came on a scramble by QB Chase Daniel on 3rd and 14. Navorro Bowman hit Daniel after he went out of bounds. The Saints capitalized on the penalty and Garrett Hartley hit a 47-yard field goal to give the Saints a 3-0 lead.

The 49ers picked up the first 1st down on the final drive of the quarter as Alex Smith hit Braylon Edwards on a slant for a gain of 12.

Put it in Perspective: It’s important to remember that the 49ers have only had 12 practices before this game. The offense did not look sharp early on as Smith was under a lot of pressure. Vic Fangio’s defense performed will though. The Saints did not manage to get one first down while Brees was in the game.

Standout Stat: Total first downs for both teams…3

Highlight Reel: Donte Whitner made a great diving play on 3rd and 3 to break up Brees’ pass.

SECOND QUARTER:

After a false start, the 49ers were backed up and couldn’t convert on 3rd and long. Lee punted to Joseph Morgan who returned it 78 yards for the touchdown.

Colin Kaepernick entered the game at quarterback. On his first pass attempt, Kaepernick threw a bullet to Lance Long for a first down. That drive stalled as the 49ers entered Saints territory after three straight sacks.

The Saints extended the lead on their final drive of the game. Mark Ingram broke a tackle by C.J. Spillman and scored from 14 yards out, giving the Saints a 17-0 lead.

The 49ers answered on their final drive. Kaepernick hit Delanie Walker who broke a tackle for a nice gain up the right sideline and then scrambled up the middle down to the NO 34. After a sack set the 49ers back, David Akers came on a drilled a 59-yard field goal just before the half. Halftime score: Saints 17 – 49ers 3

Put it in Perspective: The 49ers defense has played well for the most part and when Kaepernick got rid of the ball quickly, he made some nice throws. He also showed the ability to run effectively with a 28-yard scramble up the middle.

Standout Stat: The 49ers have 90 yards rushing, but just 19 yards passing.

Highlight Reel: Akers 59-yard field goal was impressive…the benefits of kicking in a dome.

THIRD QUARTER:

After a great punt return by Ronald Johnson, the 49ers squandered the good field position. The 49ers ended up going for it on 4th and 3, but Kaepernick was pressured as he rolled out of the pocket and his pass fell short of Johnson.

The 49ers defense played well once again, keeping the Saints off the scoreboard and stopping Mark Ingram on a 4th and 5.

FOURTH QUARTER:

Kaepernick threw his first interception. His pass was well short of Ronald Johnson down the right sideline and was picked off by former Niner Terrail Lambert.

The Saints were able to capitalize on the good field position, marching down the field and scoring on a 4-yard TD run by Chris Taylor. Saints lead 24-3.

Kaepernick threw his second interception of the night. Kap’s pass was well behind Williams and picked off by Nate Bussey.

Stay tuned to 49ers.com for postgame reaction.

Alex been playing this game long enough to make better decisions than he’s doing this guy cant be coached, If coach (JIM) was smart he’ll cut his loses now and move on !!! If anyone on this team has the biggest advantage I would think it would be Alex chance after chance,he wont be playing after he gets cut no other team will touch him. What happen to audibles ,check downs, hey take a knee dont sit there and play tough.

I am tired of losing!!!! I know it’s not all Alex’s fault, but come on….. He’s not the guy we need to lead this team. Never has been, never will be. We needed to pick up a decent veteran QB when they were available. All I can is cross my fingers and hope they can pull it together and have a decent season for a change.

  34. By Roy on Aug 12, 2011 | Reply

Ive been a 9er fan since 79, I know its not all Alex smiths fault but he isn’t helping matters either. I think its time to let him go. I’d rather see Tebow or Quinn here, it couldn’t get any worse.

  35. By ogre on Aug 12, 2011 | Reply

Nah- your right. Its kinda like Obama. Its not Alice’s fault she doesn’t know how
to lead. 15 plays and never crossing our own 30. I know he doesn’t call the
plays but this offense looks like last years (with same results-different people)
instead of the “WEST COAST OFFENSE”. These players are suppose to be
professional: they get paid like so why not play like it? True the offensive line
is being “offensive”, so Alex isn’t getting the time he needs. But his reads are
as bad as ever and that is “fear”.

Can’t watch the game here in the SLO area because our cable company SUCKS. However, from what I’m reading it sounds like the main area we need to work on is protection. No QB can play well while running for his life.

  46. By Roy on Aug 12, 2011 | Reply

But if we had Tebow it wouldn’t matter. He would rush it himself.

  47. By JR Baca in New Mexico on Aug 12, 2011 | Reply

You know whats funny, Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick has been banged up by their blitzs and its been the same O-Line starters. Please get rid of Chilo, and start goodwin at center please.

All I’m saying is Keep Alex bring in Tebow or Quinn and see what happens. Ok so Alex loses his starting job maybe, He still gets paid and we get a shot at a better season.

I just don’t want tthis to be another lost season it’s hard living in mississippi being a 49ers fans and we do the same thng every year. Alex you either got it or you don’t. You have let so many quaterbacks come in there rookie season and make you look like you are the rookie. I just can’t put my faith in you this season GM it’s time for a change because we as 49er’s fan’s are ready to win again

  51. By 49ers all-in on Aug 12, 2011 | Reply

Here are the holes, O-line can’t block, our rookie Quaterback needs accuracy, Alex Smith is a ? cause O-line can’t block and he can’t get the throw off fast enough. Seriously, can we get the trenches fixed first before we even throw a QB in there? I’d rather have 4 premiere running backs run all the way then to have whichever QB we got get beat up,

Lets hope Alex and O line prove us wrong and we have a decent season. I’m outta here!

  56. By KDB on Aug 12, 2011 | Reply

First pre season game with what 15 days of practice. Who cares. We have some good young players and like it or not, we are going to get bloodied and bruised but I think we will still compete for the NFC West title with a better than 500 record, and WITH ALEX and this O-Line.

D looks the best so far and I REALLY Like the new Safety Whiten.

Let’s move past Alex and see what Harbaugh says because REALLY, MANY of us are NOT qualified to make an honest judgement of the QB situation, period. We can be blow hards but this early critism just shows how much many of us don’t know. It really does.

Get ready for some hard nosed football and it won’t be pretty at times.

Awesome 1st performance by Kaepernick. It’s not his fault the line can’t keep him safe, but if this is him after ONLY one and a half weeks of practice playing a recent Super Bowl Champion (I love you 9ers but the Saints are really good). Can you imagine him in a year or two with a decent line??? Baby steps, ladies and gentleman, baby steps. I see big things here. Please keep him safe, and let the receiving corps get used to his style.

  63. By KDB on Aug 12, 2011 | Reply

I like the young QB he is fun to watch. The 1st team with B. Edwards, V. Davis and the Diva CWABBS. A run game and some D and we will be good.

I know Coach Harbaugh is fired up, he’s for real.

  64. By 49ers all-in on Aug 12, 2011 | Reply

Are you serious>? Awesome performance by Kaepernick? Dude he doesn’t have accuracy with the deep balls. He definitely needs to sit out the games and let Smith start. I don’t want to see talent get beaten up like A Smith did. I don’t believe that Harbaugh has shown his true colors yet and I wouldn’t want him to, but I do know that he does have to tune up Kaepernick. He really needs to fix his decision making too, 5 step drop, hitch then throw, not hitch, hitch, then interception. That’s why we have pre-season folks.

I couldn’t see the game because of our cable provider down here in Louisiana, but by reading alot of you all comments, you’ve pretty much given up already. First, its pre-season. Second, its against the 2009 Super Bowl Champions that has the same coaches and players pretty much. Third, our coaching staff has been completely gutted out with new personnel incorported into our organization. We might lose the next three too, but hopefully the players will have the playbook nailed down by then. Also, Harbaugh will have the roster chart completed by the too! 49er Faithful don’t trip, we went 4-0 in the pre-season last year and came out of the gate 0-5 where it counts most!

  73. By Ricordo on Aug 12, 2011 | Reply

Pre-season doesn’t determine your season at all! Its like an extended version of training camp, except its with different teams! A chance to see what kind of talent you have on your team and a chance to teach at the same time! I’m out 49er Faithful. Until Week 1, lol!!!

  74. By Ken on Aug 12, 2011 | Reply

That is the same O-line right. The same one Niners spent all that money on last year building from the draft. Until the line can start blocking the only chance the Niners have is to go to a spread offense with either Smith or Kap. Neither will do anything under center.

  75. By rob on Aug 12, 2011 | Reply

    Protect the QB already.
I don”t care who is the QB is for the 49ers, unless they improve the O-line by leaps and bounds the 49ers wont do much better than last years disaster. The Defense looked good tonight so now lets focus on beefing up the O-line, which did not look good. bad,bad bad performance by the offensive line.

    Hello 49ers!
Well,it seams to me,that Saints are well oil. They knowing each another well and Saints play with familiar playbook. But in the 49es,interesting to me , was to watch QB.Alex Smith is in my opine,is worthless case and week player. He mobilize hims self and paralyze everybody, And everybody just watching him.I saying it again,Alex will be great in tennis, there he ,be not just one part of 49ers.Even that part is most important.

Hello again its only pre season and seems like old times…I am sorry but a 6 year vet QB we will call Smith should be able to read the blitz and get the ball to a hot reciever. However i hope i wasnt the only one who saw the niners looked slow …real slow like they just got off the bus. They blitzed everyone someone had to be open for the hot read. wish i had some game tape to go over. One good thing Aldon Smith looks awesome,….We will hope Harbaugh can whip em into shape and forge a winning formula….Oh and chilo rachel grrrr to many mental mistakes on the line not too fond of him right now. Collin K nice speed… he is raw but all ready has more potential. So lots of work to do but i feel the players can handle it and should be able to make a run but the cards and hawks wont be as nice as the Saints were to us. It’s gonna be a rocky season so hang on

Looks like Alex Smith is already in mid-season form. Same old Alex. I have seen enough. No more patience. Too painful to watch. Can’t see him lighting it up, only dreaming he can turn it around. 9ers need to pick up a free agent QB in the next 2-3 weeks, after teams cut back to 53 , the last roster cut should free up someone with experience HOPEFULLY.

  89. By NinersNoMatterWhat on Aug 13, 2011 | Reply

Aldon smith is great, kaepernick has alot of potential i can see it, the O line, not much to say about them other than the fact that they look like high school players playing against men, alex smith was under pressure every play, he looked like he was playing with anxiety and nervousness, cuz he knows all eyes are on him, and i felt bad for him man cuz the O line made him look bad out there… David akers, great field goal, great pick up, the defense was great tonight even without some of the starters playing they held it down ..I’m excited for this we just need the O line to step it up.. REAL TALK!

I AGREE WITH YOU NinersNoMatterWhat, WE NEED A BETTER O-LINE AND IT IS PRE-SEASON, SOME FANS GIVE-UP AND THROW THE QB’S UNDER THE BUS, ALEX IS GOOD, WE JUST NEED A BETTER O-LINE. IN TIME KAPPERNICK WILL DO A LOT BETTER, HE NEEDS TO LEARN OUR SYSTEAM. DON’T GIVE UP ON ALEX, LET SEE HOW HE DOES THIS SEASON, HE HAS A GREAT COACH IN HARBAUGH. PRE-SEASON IS A TIME TO LOOK AND EVALUATE OUR TEAM. HAPPY TO HAVE DAVID AKERS ON OUR SIDE. LAST YEAR WE DID GREAT DURING PRE-SEASON AND NOT SO GOOD IN THE REGULAR SEASON. THIS YEAR I PREDICT THAT WE ARE GOING TO DO REAL WELL DURING THE REGULAR SEASON AND WIN THE NFC WEST.

    GO 49ers…….

I sure hope our Regular season shows that we have multi-million dollar professional football players on that field and not a group of millionaire’s that just show up. I have been a 49ers my entire life 28yrs and these last 10 yrs all I have done was make excuses for you guys its b.s. and all of you know it. So grab your marbles and MAN UP all of you and lets atleast have a winning season for a change. GO NINERS!!!!!!!

There wasn’t a whold lot of things to brag about last night.First pre-season game does not mean a lot. Alex just does not seem to have any “pocket presence” and does not anticipate the pressure in time. Even Kap felt it coming and avoided it more than Alex. You can’t coach it, it is instinct. First Team did ok on Defense but Offence was not up to speed. I think we need to get rid of those who are “always hurt” and seem to be dogging it. (Receiver). Good luck next week and I hope they show improvement and don’t “PEAK” in pre-season like they did last year.

The o line needs to do better but alex needs to step up and throw the ball

  98. By Alex=loser on Aug 13, 2011 | Reply

The idea that Alex is good is crazy… Fans have lost it. My guess is Alex with sit the bench by week 3.

Harbaugh clearly didn’t realize how ill prepared the line was i’m hoping this is a wake up call otherwise Alex and Kap are going to get hurt.

  99. By Alex=loser on Aug 13, 2011 | Reply

Alex is the worst QB in the league any one who thinks otherwise is an idiot…

What doesn’t Sam Bradford have to make excuses on a bad team in year one out played Alex’s best year.

This is a joke we are picked to finish last in the worst division in football but hell lets just do the same thing we always do..

If the O-line gets better and we play Kap we have a shot to win a few games…

The last I heard was this quote on “Sports Report360″ Free-agent QB Troy Smith lost a tryout to QB Kevin O’Connell on Saturday for the right to serve as Miami’s No. 3 QB.

Typical Alex. I know its preseason but he’s looked the exact same weather it’s the last 6 regular seasons or preseasons. Kaepernick will be our starter by week 4 if we don’t go pick up a veteran. Kyle Orton gives us a better shot to win games than Alex does. We really need a veteran with Alex, Colin, Jeremiah Masoli, and McCloud Bethel-Thompson on our roster. REALLY?????????????

Our defense will keep us in every game this year. I foresee us making the playoffs if our offense can gel and play on just an average NFL level .

It surprises me that JH didn’t know our line was that inept.

    The defense looked good.
The offense needs help at the O-line.
I like to see us running the ball more.
Both Quarterbacks did not impress. I don’t think Tom or Payton would either if the O-line did not give them time to make reads. I think coach is saving the main plays for the start of the regular season. I would rather go 0-4 in pre-season and win in the regular season.
Don’t give up on Alex or K. They are both learning a new system just like the O-line is.
A new veteran Qb will still need t o learn the system. not a good idea now. besides all the good ones have been taken.

    Go 49ers.

    Whatever happened to Troy Smith?

  112. By lilmo9er on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

Big CK fan watched him for years in Nevada and he will do great for the 49ers we have to wait and see I think Smith will start but it will end by week 3. CK will take over the team and win more than 50 % of the remaining games. New Coach, QB issues, O line lets get the bugs out for 2012

Oh man here we are again with the O-line….people did u watch the game ..of course you did. Football …lets see if you know the opponents QB is no good under pressure you blitz till the cows ccome home. do you think no one blitzes payton or brady of course they do and they throw to the hot reciever then next play they do a screen …this slows down the defensive coordinaters blitzing and allows you to throw the ball no o-line can stop 10 man rush over and over ….the QB has to make the hot reciever read and get the ball out…Alex got blasted because he cant make a read and know those guys are coming he was looking way down field instead of hitting the hot reciever. This all happened last year did you see the game 7 punts they blitzed Alex and they blitzed the rook because it worked to nulify there decision making. You cant expect the line of 5 guys to block 9 or even 8 when the QB wont get rid of the ball. watch the offense form start again if you can and you will see Alex made no attempt to hit the hot reciever…now watch any other game that was on and see how they delt with blitz. Alex lacks the ability to read the defense he is so worried about not throwing a pick or getting sacked that he has no idea what to do. He does not have the ablilty in the NFL to make an impact. Now Collin had not much better results but it ws his first NFL action and he ran he tried to make it happen and looked poised doing it….hes not scared and he has a feel for the defense he looks like he will get it solid effort by the kid like what i see

By Paul of Brisbane, I’m telling you # 14 Kevin Jurovich is one of the most versitile wide receivers on the team, I’ve been watching this player since he started playing football and always knew that he had great talent, what a great addition to our team,we are in for a awsome season.

  116. By ninerfan4life on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

i hear that culpepper is coming in for a workout. it does not take a genius to figure out that we need a veteran qb besides alex smith. hey, i like alex … i thinks he’s a bright guy with some ability, but it is simply not going to work here. he needs a fresh start and so do we (the niners)

  117. By kathy on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

how many penalties can you give a team, give us a break already.. time to get a quaterback before itw too late, Smith should be a coach, a mentor or something.. come on we need a quaterback

  118. By JR Baca in New Mexico on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

Pre-season is a time to evaluate the team, who will they have as QB. The regular season is whats important. It does not matter who they get as QB if the O-line does not improve. New Orleans is a very good team. I’m sure they are evaluating their mistakes and will work from that. Don’t give up hope, there is always a solution to any problem. The coaching staff is pretty smart, they will figure it out. They will get better as they go fourth!

what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger….well we damn near died!!!!! hopefully we make our adjustments for da raiders……guys we lost our starting center and best lineman to the Giants, he makes all the protection calls before the ball is snapped, not saying our QB’s can’t call out a read or two…….in the past the worse we done in the preseason the better the regular season turned out………go niners!

  120. By gunny on Aug 14, 2011 | Reply

So, the niners lost a pre-season game. Big deal. The loss isnt what hurt, its the very bad play of the whole offense. I wish they would lose A. Smith, but this loss wasnt his fault. We have two pro-bowlers on the o-line but they didnt look it in that game. A. Davis is a 1st rounder, he needs to start playing like one. Anyone remember Bubba? CK has great potential, dont get him killed. Frank looked pretty good and Im glad to see him back. All in all, its Go Niners.

  121. By Havocc72 on Aug 15, 2011 | Reply

True the O-line didnt show up, true the receivers didnt separate to counter a blitzing D with wholes in it, but the D led by Willis always shows up. Teh Problem with Alex Smith is that he does not lead a team, he doesnt take commant of the huddle. After 6 years of being there he should take control of his team. After all if your the QB its your team. For ex, that was teh perfect time for him to grill the O-line about there lack of blocking and get his team focused. Elite QB’s control/demand the team to do their job. Man up Alex I havent given up on you but lead your team and they will play for you.

  122. By L.G on Aug 15, 2011 | Reply

I am so disappointed with the Niners they have an average draft, nobody really in free agency, they bring back Smith, and they want to bring in Culpepper? I know it’s early but man give the fans a bone or something to feel good about!

  123. By Mannco on Aug 15, 2011 | Reply

It’s not the worst move getting Culpepper for a year to mentor or keep the ship afloat. We wont spend much, and he did great in the past. He can help out Kaepernick and really push Alex to get his act together or he will be grabbing some pine. GO NINERS

Does Culpepper have anything left? If so great; if not, don’t spend the time or money on another “cheerleader”. Make the QB Coach earn his money. Right now we have Alex and Kap (Youth and Youthless) Kap is my pick with what we have. Just give the kid some protection. I think the Coach will play his best card.

ALL THESE KNOW IT ALL FANS, THEY THINK THAT THEY HAVE ALL THE SOLUTIONS. COACHING STAFF KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE DOING!

ALEX IS GOING TO WIN STARTING QB, KAPPERNICK’S IS TO GREEN FOR THE NFL, IN TIME HE WILL BE GREAT

    GO 49ERS…….
