Posted by Scott Kegley on August 9, 2011 – 2:34 PM

The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed S Dashon Goldson to a one-year deal.

Goldson (6-2, 200) enters his fifth NFL season after being selected in the fourth round (126th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft by the 49ers. He has played in 51 games (34 starts), registering 254 tackles, five interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), three sacks, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 15 passes defensed.

In 2010, Goldson started all 16 games and registered his first career touchdown on a 39-yard interception return vs. Seattle (12/12/10). In 2009, he set career highs in tackles (114), interceptions (four), sacks (two) and forced fumbles (three), while starting all 16 games. Goldson mostly saw action on special teams in his first two seasons, recording 10 special teams tackles in both 2007 and 2008.

The 26-year old native of Carson, CA, starred collegiately at Washington.

GOOD MOVE ADDS DEPTH TO OUR SECONDARY. WITH SMITH GOING DOWN LOOKS LIKE GOLDSON AND WHITNER WILL BE OUR STARTERS.

I know you might hate me for saying this, but compare taylor mays to michael huff of the raiders. he SUCKED his first couple years, got his stuff together, and now he’s a good, if not then decent safety. taylor mays is an even better athlete than him, and shows that he can make big plays. hopefully with madieu williams starting he can get used to seeing how things are done, and then he can have a shot at the starting position and be ready

Very good move. The defensive secondary should be stronger this year.
However, I am concerned that the Niners have not found another NT to replace Franklin.

My boy Sopuaga will get lots of time at NT, He is a beast!!

  11. By Kris on Aug 9, 2011 | Reply

We don’t need one, we’ve got other players who can step in and replace him. Besides there are several positions that we need to improve at besides the DT spot that are more important, like our secondary.

  12. By JLN49er on Aug 9, 2011 | Reply

The secondary is really full now. It’s going to be interesting who decides to make sure he’s the starter. Like they say, The Niners have a nice problem.”

I also believe the Defense will be ok..If Harbaugh doesnt get the QB dialed, we’re still @#$%ed

Dashon needs work…he’s no “ball hawk” yet…

so glad they worked this out..cant wait till kickoff!!!

This is going to be the best D niners have had since the 90s. Got 6 dbs who could start most anywhere. Solid LBS. Dont need Franklin we have Sopoaga. He has been solid on the run for a long time. The Smiths and Brooks will have time to get to the QB.
The offense will be okay. Alex will really become a solid QB thanks to Harbaugh.

Nice, 9ers! I believe Coach Harbaugh knows what he’s doing. As fans , we see one aspect of what is going on…the coaches are the ones that see it ALL!…Let’s give Alex a chance and support him. I believe coach knows how to bring it out of him…forget the ‘Boys…where them Cards at?…Everybody sleepin’ on us…but we about to wake ‘em up! gooooooooo 9ers!

i was hoping they would sign him he is a warrior on the field and is always nice to have deph in the secondary looking forward to game time.

Dood move but I like all of the competition at Safety, it’s great. One yr. deal is good, he needs to continue to prove himself, then give him a good contract for 3 yrs. if he shows up this season.

  24. By 'dOnTtRadeMays on Aug 9, 2011 | Reply

Baalke wants to trade their 2nd Rd pick, Niners will be sorry if MAYS ends up somewhere else. Can’t believe it after 1 year, he’s a FREAK!! KEEP HIM!

  25. By Chris on Aug 10, 2011 | Reply

glad we resigned him, also some of you need to realize that we aren’t going to sign a veteran QB this year…..Alex Smith is most likely going to start but with harbaugh nd some more weapons on offense I think he’ll do great nd i guarntee he will put up better stats than kobb

  26. By D on Aug 10, 2011 | Reply

Hopefully he can cover this year without running down the field with his back facing the ball.

  27. By ninerfan4life on Aug 10, 2011 | Reply

Nice ….. we still could add another CB and WR. Also, I’m getting absolutely sick of Crabtree!

  28. By and thats a wrap on Aug 10, 2011 | Reply

Well in just 3 starts Kolb has done way bette than Alex Smith …..I didnt see anyone busting down Alex’s door this off season to start for their team. Alex is a bust if he can make it to 8-8 without faking an injury ill be surprised

  29. By sam h on Aug 10, 2011 | Reply

i like it he plays fast and hits hard. if a few of these young guys pay off the defense could be real scary for opponents.

I STILL CANNOT HEAR REPORTERS’ QUESTIONS AT THE PRESS CONFERENCES (MOST RECENTLY: VIC FANGIO). EITHER MIC THE QUESTIONER OR HAVE THE COACH REPEAT THE QUESTION. SEEMS SIMPLE ENOUGH.

  31. By lance lucas on Aug 10, 2011 | Reply

I still say we need to pick up Kelvin Hayden from free agency to shore up the CB position. Good player who can make plays

  32. By Robert S on Aug 10, 2011 | Reply

I believe the 49ers will be alright.. In fact I would love to see us beat up on the Pittsburgh steelers them bums….. And I am from that area…. Niners for life! Lets get umm…..

FINALLY A GOOD SOLID SECONDARY , CANT WAIT TO SEE THE DEFENSE SAACK TOTAL W WILLIS , J SMITH AND ALDON RISE

  34. By Red&Gold 4 life on Aug 10, 2011 | Reply

Good move bringing Goldson back. I didn’t want to lose him because he hits like a safety who has a point to prove on the field. I think he fits in nicely in our backfield, and with Willis dominating the mid level and Sopoaga pounding his way up front our defense will still be a nasty test for opposing offenses.

  35. By Houston49er on Aug 10, 2011 | Reply

Crabtree needs to get hit crap together. I bought his jersey a couple of years ago and saw him play his first NFL game live at Reliant versus the Texans. I’m starting to wonder if i should even keep wearing it. Come on Crab let this be your breakout season. Ps- There were about 30,000 niner fans at the game i’ll guestimate!

When we drafted alex i was excited. Look how many rookie quaterbacks that have came into the league and taken off their first season i just don’t think he has what it takes to play quaterback or better take this team to the next level sorryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  46. By Kimble/Slice on Aug 10, 2011 | Reply

But glad we braught back DG

  47. By 49erssbc on Aug 11, 2011 | Reply

sorry, but if alex doesn’t prove that he can help this team this year, i want him gone without consideration of a resign. he has already had too many oppritunities to show his worth. those few good games have been the only thing that has kept him around. also very happy that we got goldson, i thought they were going to get rid of him

  48. By mata on Aug 13, 2011 | Reply

just throwing it out their lofa tatupu? leave alex the job theirs no good veterans out their even available

  49. By 49ers4ever on Aug 18, 2011 | Reply

dashon goldson is a great young player…ssooo glad we got him back i thought that was our biggest free agent we needed back or franklin. imagine whitner if he can make the change to free safety where hes smackin people and goldson back at strong safety. 2 great players…1 veteran 1 young…one hits people tttooo hard and the other is a quick ball hawk….deadly combo if you ask me
