49ers Sign LBs Applewhite and Grant
Posted by on July 31, 2011 – 7:26 PM
The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed LB Antwan Applewhite and LB Larry Grant, both to one-year deals.
Applewhite (6-3, 258) originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers in 2008. He has played in 31 games (13 starts), recording 68 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two passes defensed. In 2010, Applewhite played in 16 games (13 starts) and set career highs in tackles (48), sacks (3.0) and forced fumbles (two).
Applewhite, a 25-year old native of Los Angeles, CA, starred collegiately at San Diego State where he earned first-team All-Mountain West Conference as a junior.
Grant (6-1, 251) originally entered the league as a seventh round draft choice by the 49ers in the 2008 NFL Draft. He was signed to the 49ers practice squad following training camp. Grant was signed to the St. Louis Rams active roster on November 26, 2008, and was released by St. Louis on July 30, 2011. He has played in 34 games (eight starts) and has registered 48 tackles, 3.0 sacks and three forced fumbles in his three-year career.
Grant, a 26-year old native of Santa Rosa, CA, began his collegiate career at City College of San Francisco before transferring to Ohio State.

How is it pointless? They are bringing in the building blocks to our team. Who cares if it was done two weeks ago, now or in the future. Can we please wait until at least the begining or half way through the season to make rash judgements about our team? There are plenty of great free agents still out there….PLENTY

I will tell you what . If they do not produce this year then it is all on management . This was the biggest free agency boom because of the new FA rules in about a decade. Look at the eagles . They cahsed in big time . I think that attitude is missing big time right now. Being afraid to miss on a big free agent leads to mediocrity. So what if Clements was a bust . Justin Smith was a gem and he is our defensive star. He is the driving force on this defense

Yeah seriously we have bigger needs we absolutely need to sign Antonio Cromartie and possibly try and get Braylon Edwards, yes I know Braylon struggled but i feel he can make a come back with our team. Plus with crabtree hurt we can’t afford to be cheap and sign another no name rookie that wasn’t drafted, oh and by the way give Frank Gore what he’s asking for playing without gore is season suicide.

Listen, to everyone that is a skeptic…let’s calm down. I feel the same way– that 9er mgmt did nothing but, there are still players out there and we’re not done and we haven’t played a game yet so, wait til at least mid season to say we suck and have a bad mgmt staff. I believe in being optomistic. Yeah yeah we kinda stunk last season but, I think that instead of the fear the 9ers played with last season they will come out believing they can make a mistake and not get verbally beaten by our former coach. Don’t get me wrong, I Love coach Sing and when he figures it out, he’ll be a hell of a coach! But, for now let’s throw our support out there for our team (GO 9ERS!!!!!) and have faith in Trent and Jed to get things done to make us better. REMEMBER IF YOU JUMP SHIP YOU HAVE NO INTEGRITY. You may as well not even call yourself a niner fan!!! I will be a niner fan for life no matter if we go 1 and 15 this season. Well that’s all I have to say about that.

Let’s see how it all pans out. It seems like they are playing the salary cap game. Does anyone know where they are with their salary cap. Do they even have the money to spend to get a big singing. They gotta do something about their secondary or there’s no way we can win against top rated offenses. What your predictions for the year. I say we go 8-8 this year and miss the playoffs. That’s only if Alex steps it up. Hopefully i’m wrong.

Hey AKUMA…..
How in the heck do you possibly know that all the players on the 49er’s roster HATES (strong word) Alex Smith ? Are you the fly on the wall that hears the on goings in The Santa Clara Headquarters? You would think that since most of the offense and some defensive personal that attended the Alex Smith workouts (Yes the Alex Smith workouts) liked Smith, and would follow their Leader into the hot sun to make their team a contender. The point is that the 49er’s lost as a team in 2010 and won as a team in 2010, the players know this (including coaches)….
I do like your Idea of Mr. I stand on the Dallas Star Owens being signed for maybe a 2 year deal ,without all the distractions and maybe retire out as a San Francisco 49er.
The season is still very young as far as free agents go,and there are lots of fish to catch before this is all is said and done. Have Faith and patients. Great things will happen for the guys in Scarlet and Gold…………….

The niners need to go after a reciever like B. Edwards or M. Floyd and then sign a cornerback like Cromartie or C. Rogers. If the niners have a bad year I will blame it on the front office for being cheap!!

For reals, every other team in the division looks smarter, except for maybe Seattle bringing in T. Jackson and M. Leinart but even they got some big names free agents. To be honest I don’t feel its on the coaches watch Vic Fangio Press interview on here, you can tell he wanted some top-flight free agents. What a waste of cap so far…

I am 49er by heart since the age of 6. I do not like the way things look today but maybe they are building on some things for next season. Lets just sit back and wait and see. A lot of things are entact, we have lost players but it is not like we lost a lot of key players. Sometimes, younger players can step right end and perfor. Singletary was good but he was confused at times on what to do, in certain situations. Our offense was strong but he wanted to beat up Gore but he had many weapons to throw too. Jim is bringing a more complete offense to use everyone and spread the field open. The D-Coordinator seems to bring a different approact, not really better, to the 3-4 defense. Our secondary looked bad, but they were not, when you rely on rushing the QB and they are not doing there job consistently, it makes the DB’s and Safety’s look horrible. Anyway, lets sit back and watch.

It’s great to clean house and to put together albeit methodically (Slow to some)a team with their type of players in mind that fit. We also don’t know about all of the bad personalities like an owens that hurt this team, there were some that’s for sure.
It’s great–just know that if we win big this yr then great but this is a process to raise this Phoenix and many seem to not understand that. look I want to win as much as anyone but I also understand the process, because that’s what it is, a process. You don’t win just throwing dukie against a wall.
Sit back, relax and listen for a while..

The thing I really dont understand is we do have a good team around us and the few cracks in our team the front office is to cheat to fill them with good vets. Our cap space is around the 90 million range so we have plenty of space. But it has went down some because of the players we have lost.Clements,Lawson,Franklin who hopefully we sign.We all have seen what Alex can do that is fair enough to say.Right????? Must QB’s dont even get as long as what has had.Orton is still out there and hes not the best but he is better then Smith why not upgrade.WR’s our number 1 WR has had foot problems since we drafted him.Maybe that should be on our top of the list thing to do.Because we all know if you start Alex he needs WR that will go get the ball and help him out.Our Wr’s are ok but be bold take a chance.Loseing is starting to get old we are the damn 49ers 5 time super bowl champs and we sucked for years now come on get it together.

we have about 30 million of cap space left

Baalke says to be patient. I’ve been patient with this team for about 10 years now. I wish the Yorks would sell this team to someone, ANYONE who is really interested in football and the fans. Until then, it’s going to be the same old song and dance, so I’ll just “be patient” I guess!!! One thing is for sure, I’ve enjoyed college football a lot more in the past few years.

Please can we get a DB. All I ask is for us to sign a good DB. We have not signed anyone. We are the worst team in the worst division.
By KDB on Aug 1, 2011 | Reply
Being that our cap space is $20 million we really can’t do the caddy deal and don’t need nor want to yet. I think all of these players need evaluations then the coaches in this rushed environment will make good decisions. But to get all worried at this juncture shows that we can’t even let a plan unfold, and that’s lame.
Let it play out. we are all frustrated, excited, but know very little about the game when it comes to evaluating talent, etc., they do this for a living and I have ALL the confidence in Harbaugh and Baalke for sure.
We’ll win but it will take some time.
I would like to see us get a good DB to go with Spencer.

Well they only sign players we don’t know and not getting any corners after letting N.C. go. Keeping Alex Smith who makes to many mistakes without getting a QB to setup if falls apart again. They seem to think it was not Alex Smith why they lost they seem to blame OL. Why get a kicker that missed to many field goals last year. He seems to not be the same. We do need the old owner back Ed D

I don’t get it…We needed a top-flight defensive back and they are gone…Cromartie resigning with the Jets. Another thing I don’t get is paying Alex 5 mil. and they are not willing to give Frank an extension (he has been behind the same offensive line as Alex and is Pro Bowler), so he will make 2 mil. less than Alex…I don’t get it!!
We have signed a lot of Rookies and Cast-offs, which is fine for the future, but I was kind of hoping to at least reach the playoffs. I am certaqinly worried about obtaining that goal this year!
Hate the Eagles, but respect what they have done the past few days!!

Can we please stop being so cheap and sign carlos rogers and another corner. Im a 9er fan for life but the frugalness in which ownership chooses to operate is pathetic. Heres the plan, sign back abrayu franklin, sign carlos rogers and another corner, bring one more linebacker into the fold and we should be solid. Remember ownership, spend money to make money. If ownership doesnt spend, seats will be empty. ticket sales are based on optimism not how much money you are under the cap!!!!!!!!!. ownership doesnt have to do like the eagles did but man, at least keep up with division. looks like another 4-12 season. Go LSU!

I could see us doing a deal with the eagles for Asante Sammuels maybe. It will play out but patience whether you like it or not is correct.
I too like Kendall Hunter, great pick up.
Also-Frank is back whether they extend him now or later that’s part of the new CBA, this is why there are 2 sides to the CBA so one player can’t hose a company although I love F. Gore.

We lost some good players but we have enough players that will step up. This is the NFL there are reasons why we have the players we do. Gore just agreed to come back, Willis is a leader and will make these young guys play there hardest, and Alex Smith has a lot of talent. He made some good throws stop being haters and have faith support you team. Smith deserves another chance, he has a hell of a heart and too much talent to just throw out. Last season wasn’t smiths fault we had horrible coaching choices. Lets get it done this season, play hard and don’t lose faith Smith we need you buddy. Show us what you got

It is very frustrating as a fan to first have to go through 100 plus days of lock outs. And then to have to listen and watch as your team (49ers) goes out and re-signs a Qb that had his chances and didnt succeed, then turn around and sign a kicker? Really?? Let one of the emotionally leaders (SPikes)sign with another team. Meanwhile there is an abundance of skilled players still on market (Rogers, Kruetz, Tatupu,Leber) that may not be the marquee names but guys that know how to be 1. leaders 2.good teamamtes 3. winners. Mr Baallke just give us fans an explanation to what your intentions are, that way the fans can make a decison whether to spend there hardworking cash on an organization that is being “patient”. Big D

I hope that niners management are reading these comments. Building for the future??? We haven’t had a winning season since 2002. I was 9 years old. Those memories are fading, Jed! I want a winning season. Management aren’t making smart decisions. The 49ers need a veteran quarterback that can lead and throw the football, but more importantly shape Colin Kaepernick into a pro quarterback. Thats how you build for the future. Not just pick up rookies and throwing them into the fire. Look at Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. (I realize thats your plan with Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick, but lets be real…Alex Smith is not good and won’t help Kap one bit) Aaron Rodgers sat on the bench and learned from Brett Favre for quite a few years. Now he has a super bowl ring.
On another note, who is eating away at the salary cap so much that we can’t get Nnamdi? (Gore, Willis, Davis…Thats about it) You release Clements, effectively clearing some salary cap room, which I saw as a respectable move. But then you don’t sign a CB in free agency. BTW free agency is low hanging fruit. Get the low hanging fruit. Not only are they low hanging, they’re ripe and they know the game. If the Eagles can afford their ‘dream team’ we should be able to afford our teams all-stars (Gore,Willis,Davis,Crabtree) PLUS an all-star cornerback. In a way, by signing the cheap players that don’t start, it’s more expensive than signing good players that do start even if they eat away at some cap room. This rambling comment ends here…

All the great talent out there and we draft a kicker. Makes absolutely no sense to me. I mean all of the holes we have in our team and we fill in only a kicker?? u gotta be kidding me! We cut 12 ppl and signed 1..I’d honestly be surpised if we win 5 games this season. All other teams in our division made BIG Moves, and we’re sitting back like we were super bowl champs last year. It blows my mind, but when we dont make the play offs in jan, we’ll know why!

Waited all summer to try and see the start of something positive……and this side of the Harbaugh signing…..that was it….we got Harbaugh….and thats about it. Hey Hermie,
You nknow if I need to eat crow I will, but I just got to believe in Harbaugh. He’s right about Alex and as you know, I feel the same. The kids good but man he has been dealt a BAD HAND until now and I really believe that and don’t care what some say. And no, Luck ain’t coming here that’s for sure. I had heard a few ignoramaces on KNBR that called in ans say that we just need to tank the season to get him, I mean seriously who they kidding.
In any event, glad there’s football and yes CK is a good one from Nevada and we need to sit back and let Harbaugh spin his web for a minimum of 2-3 years. So we can sustain winning, its a project.

ESPN.com has named the Freee Agent Winners and Losers so far for 2011. As most of you already know we are “not” on the winners side of those lists. But, what’s worse then not being on the winners list, is the 49ers are listed as the #1 Loser.
Do we have a GM or VP of Player Personnel? You can’t tell me that we are so over stacked with tallent at every position we don’t need some All Pros here or there.

Good Lord Baalke!! … make the deal for Orton and Samules … Sign WR’s Edwards, Steve Smith and Malcom Floyd…. you already let Cromartie get away….what was the point of cutting Nate Celments if you weren’t gonna sign Aasumugha or Cromartie …. but NO!!… you sign two guys that couldn’t make Detroits practice squad and were suppose to be Overjoyed!!

Can we PLEASE get some toughness in the office? Where is the “go get ‘em” attitude. I live in South Jersey, “Eagle Nation.” I have to deal with hearing what Philly did every day. Teams in our own divsion are bulking up with talent!! Seattle got Sidney Rice. A receiver!! Something we need!! Lets get it together Niner office!!!

The release of clements i loved. To many times seeing this over paid bum getting burned for tds. I would like to see the resigning of Franklin thought as he is a good nose man to plug the middle. Goldson is soso at best so i will not miss him. The need for corner is a tough one cause we dont know how the young players will be. I would love brent grimes but he is an RFA. Alex Smith will be better but iI dont expect him to be back after this season and I want to see CK play with his duel threat to run or throw. I belive this team will be leaps and bounds better on offense this season with a knowledgeable HC. The defense will improve if it is used the right way, the dbs couldn’t get any worse and by god blitz willis more, every time he does he blows people up

Wow I know niners said they would be quiet during free agency but never expected this.We lose 3 of our own guys per free agent pick up.And the 3rd coach to not bring in a decent QB to challenge Alex Smith , any fan feel confident in a winning season? Well if you do I have land to sell you in Cuba!

well! still no free agent news or at least news of us picking up a notible one. Please front office, if you plan on throwing the season or not trying to play for contention, let me know now so I dont have to sit through the turmoil of watching attrocity at its best on Sundays. I’d almost rather be watching a movie on the lifetime network. How sad is that!

It’s not where you start. It’s where u Finish. All corners are better with a great rush.I suspect the 49ers to do just that.Thats what makes the Eagles good at it…They still can’t stop the RUN…Vic will probably get hurt during the year & then Young will be tested again. Dream Team Indeed??

These guys are two solid pick-ups…Larry Grant started for the Rams and recorded numerous sacks and tackles…Applewhite started for the Chargers and also recorded solid numbers…Everyone is so quick to shoot down these types of moves but these are moves that add depth to our LB core…I like the moves we’ve made so far…I would love to see WR Braylon Edwards be brought in for a 1-year deal to give us an outside playmaker

MAYS probally would do better at OLB than grant and applewhite!
