49ers Release Nate Clements

Posted by Taylor Price on July 30, 2011 – 5:47 PM

The San Francisco 49ers announced on Saturday that they have released CB Nate Clements.

“The 49ers organization greatly appreciates Nate’s efforts as a 49er,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “Nate is a class act, and a tough competitor, who has given a lot of himself over the past four years. We wish him, and his family, all the best.”

Clements joined the 49ers in 2007 and went on to play in 54 games (53 starts) with the club, notching 309 tackles, 10 interceptions, seven forced fumbles, two sacks and 52 passes defensed. A 2004 Pro Bowl selection, he has played in 150 career games (144 starts) tallying 832 tackles, 33 interceptions, 20 forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, 3.5 sacks and 123 passes defensed, since being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft.

Thank you Nate for being a great 9er and defensive leader. Your hands down one of the best tacklers at your position and it sucks to see you go, I always wanted the team to find someone legit to work next to you on the field but I guess it wasn’t meant to be. I’ll always remember all the picks we had playing madden, just don’t fumble anymore after interceptions lol, peace out Nate.

what is going on here you release a starter and dont pick one up…ive never been this disapointed with the front office i mean they always at least do something to get you fired up for the season…all they have done is sign a bunch of people that were not even good enough to be drafted …no proven players were picked up and they released the starter and didnt grab a replacement ahhhhhhhhhh is this the twilight zone this is not happening

That is my problem we are getting nothing at all in terms of players. There were a ton of players out there that could help be the beginning of a new era for us but no we dont wont to compete at all! Next to go willis and V. Davis. We are running in the wrong direction with the cheap management we have!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Make the fans want to watch and enjoy

I can feel you on that my thing is we haven’t had a solid quaterback since jeff garcia and we have given alex enough time to carry this team to the next level and he hasn’t produced. Now we are given him the reigns to carry a talented team again enough is enough

I am a 49er fan living in PA which is Eagles territory and Steelers territory, I just don’t understand which direction we are going. I went to high school with Ricky Watters a good friend and what the organization is doing now is just sad. Seems like we are trying to tank the season for a good draft pick next year but who knows how that will go down. At least we still have the best linebacker in the league #52. I’m also a personal trainer and I hope everyone came to camp in shape or its going to be a long long season.

i am a die hard 49ers fan. every year i hope the team goes back to the playoffs since they went in 2002. i just dont think alex smith is the guy anymore. we need a veteren qb to take us to the next level. with all the free agents that was out there to get, i havn’t heard anything from the 49ers. what are we doing?

But we havent picked up anyone to replace him the niners are starting to get on my nerves.I dont even think we want to win.Our front office sucks. We need to be alittle more agressive .damn

dang, Sabean should be the niners manager too, he’s been trading for players left and right and by now we would have osamuagh, edwards, nd probably ocho

Everybody needs to relax we all want big free agents to sign with our team, but he wants someone when they don’t want you, meaning these players went to the teams they wanted to play for, remeber we haven’t been a winning organization 2004 so our reputation is not winning, so we have to build from within we will be fine as long as the coaches bring in a good system that can win and I believe Coach Harbaugh can, and will if not I know he’s going to chop off some heads if the players don’t perform.

  22. By 9er fan on Aug 1, 2011 | Reply

Does the 49ers front office not know how to go out and sign players or what..they have been sitting with thier thumb up thier butts this whole entire time and have yet to pursue anyone to help the team out in any possible way.The other teams within our divisoin are getting better and better every day while our team gets lower and lower. The front office needs to start singing players that will make an impact or we might as well kiss our season bye bye

  23. By Jrock on Aug 1, 2011 | Reply

Why is Alex Smith still here? We can not win with him. He doesn’t have what it takes 6yrs ?……Look at Aaron Rodgers, Sam Bradford. Isn’t he supposed to get better with time? We ain’t going nowhere with him. Go get us a veteran!

  24. By 49erWayz on Aug 1, 2011 | Reply

Nate thanks for always getting burned and after calling yourself a locked down corner.. I think your numbers can explain otherwise.. Though you have great tackling technique… I believe you got over on the money and now never again will you lined up on that sideline getting burned again.. So take your money and bounce b i t ochhhhh!!!!

  25. By sfninerfan on Aug 1, 2011 | Reply

I am so frustrated with this team front office doing nothing to get better.Another season with Alex Smith cmon niners.

  26. By Angel on Aug 1, 2011 | Reply

It is true that Nate did not play as well as we had hoped! Even though he made some dumb play by being over agressibe, including his give away in Atlanta! But he was still the best of all the DB! What I am troubled about that we have NO one, absolutely no one to replace him. Unless there are a few surprises, we will BIG coverage troubles!

Everyone chill…we have new coaches and you got to give them the opportunity for them to do their jobs. They did what they thought was best, Honestly this might have been a good thing because if you haven’t noticed Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie went to the Eagles which makes it Asante Samuel, Nnamdi Asomugha, and DRC. We might be getting Asante because it will be hard to give 3 starting CB’s the playing time they want, let alone 3 Pro Bowl CB’s. Asante is unsure of his future in Philly and wants to go somewhere where he will be the number one corner and why not go to us…a place thats young and on the rise to do great things. Just let the front office and coaching staff do what they think is best.

fellow niner fans we are about to tank our season so we all might as well get ready, Coach harbaugh I hope andrew luck is the chosen one because your job depends on it. i mean um talking instant success like sam bradford or brady or big ben. if not u might not b around when luck comes around. what is andrew luck with no supporting cast. we need dbs, wrs, and a better defensive co. i mean vic who fangio who is he. but i do think kendall hunter will turn out to one of the steals of the draft. i hope culliver pans out cuz we need him. aldon smith needs to play like a top ten pick too. overall i give our draft grade a C. we were so close to getting patrick peterson. alex smith this is really your last chance to join our niner tradition. maybe i need to wish you good LUCK! lol! colin K can u be the guy? but look on the bright side our division got weaker too.

Do any of you remember that we won our first super bowl with ALL ROOKIE backfield, did names like Ronnie Lott or Eric Wright ( who made the game saving tackle after John Taylor made the game winning touchdown). Was Joe Montana getting national press? Even in 1984 all the media could talk about was Dan (never got a super bowl ring) Marino. Who was Bill Ring, if you don’t remember it’s okay – everyone seems to forget that we came from the absolute bottom to the top in 3 years after Bill Walsh arrived. I’ll go with coach Harbaugh with a young eager team and ride the path to Glory with our beloved 49ers. None of the so called experts ever get it right, they’re just making it like the rest of us, because it’s fun! But it’s no brain surgery, even if some of you whiners sound like perhaps you’ve had lobotomies. We just need a TEAM without the divas. Go Niners!

I’m from Louisiana and been a Niners fan since the beginning of Joe Montana. I’ll never give up on the Red and Gold. New coach. New Era. Let’s get this thing started and see what will happen.

Great we are heading back to being a losing team again. I’m getting tired of this front office not doing anything to get us back to atleast the playoffs and not caring about the fans. Where is Eddie DeBartolo when you need him? So at the end of last year they said that they were going to do everything they can to make us a championship team again. Then we do nothing in FA, now lets get rid of a good cornerback and oh yeah we don’t need another one to replace him. I hope all the money they took from FA to pay Harbaugh is worth it. He’s not a proven coach at the elite level and only had one real good year in college so I guess that makes it worth it. No wonder we are not signing FA we blew our $ on Harbaugh. Soon Willis, Gore, and Davis will want to go elsewher to be on a winning team. They call their fans 49ers faithful, well we are losing faith. I hope someone on the team reads these and realizes that we are tired of being fans of losers, not individual players, but as a team and the players probably are too. This will be my last year of being a fan of the 49ers if they have another losing year. Don’t care about the short training camps all teams started the same.

i like that he knew how to tackle but honestly my opinon he couldn’t cover a receiver like we needed him too… he was WAY over priced for the way he played corner.. he could tackle but thats not all the CB position is about… you need to be able to pick a ball off or atleast knock the ball down so the receiver can’t get it

  33. By gwen thomas on Aug 5, 2011 | Reply

it is ashame that 49ers staff would make fans suffer another year by keepibg alex smith. at least hire a good back up like keven kolb or vince young. we have a rookie back up. jim harbough is a rookie coach but should;ve had some experience in knowing that we need a strong qb. i am going to stop buying tickets and supporting this team. i urge everyone to follow because when money stops flowing in then we get someone’s attendtion but if we keep buying tickets they may never change

  34. By jrparker on Aug 5, 2011 | Reply

Aldon Smith was our first (7th overall) pick in the draft, but he may not start, our second round pick (QB)will need time to develop and our third round pick (CB)was rated as a 6th round talent and now it seems we are getting everyone else’s left overs. I would like to think Harbaugh is on top of his game here and is aware of things that the 49er fan base isn’t when it comes to available talent and in judging talent, but he is making it harder and harder for me to believe that. I hope he makes me eat crow, but frankly, I have not been impressed with his decision making thus far.
