49ers Sign QB Bethel-Thompson

Posted by Taylor Price on July 28, 2011 – 4:09 PM

The San Francisco 49ers announced on Thursday that they have signed QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

Bethel-Thompson (6-4, 230) signed with the San Jose Sabercats of the Arena Football League in the spring of 2011, and he appeared in 12 games and completed 20 of 43 pass attempts for 220 yards, three touchdowns and one interception this past season.

He played three seasons at Sacramento State after transferring from UCLA, appearing in 25 games (5 starts). In 2010, he played in 5 games, completing 21 of 38 pass attempts for 161 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Bethel-Thompson played in all 11 games (2 starts) in 2009, seeing action at quarterback in six games. He completed 64 of 110 pass attempts for 746 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. As a sophomore, Bethel-Thompson played in four games (two starts) and completed 28 of 49 pass attempts for 415 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He began his collegiate career at UCLA, playing in five games (one start). He redshirted in 2006.

Bethel-Thompson, a 23-year old native of San Francisco, CA, attended Balboa High School and lettered in football for three seasons (2003-05), earning first-team all-city, player of the year, and all-metro honors after throwing for 2,100 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior.

ATTENTION! We are willing to sign ONLY CHEAP players! Doesn’t look good for Gore…EDdie D where you at? Namdi is a pipe dream at this point…Were gone be the 2011 version of the early 90’s cards! NICE

GOOD PICK, MCLEOD BETHEL THOMPSON WILL OPEN SOME EYES. HE DID IT WHEN SACRAMENTO STATE PLAYED STANFORD, LAST YEAR.

This signing will create competition for the starting job, hopefully this will make Alex Smith get his act up.

This is only for them to have another arm for training camp. If he outshines Kaepernick and Masoli, he’ll give himself a shot to make the team. It will be an uphill battle though.

Bethel-Thompson. I can’t believe everyone forgot about this guy. He was a total stud IN HIGH SCHOOL!! WTF?? He’s so bad he can make Alex look like a pro-bowler. Make a move or we will be without Gore this season and who can blame the guy? Maybe a lockout would have been easier on even all us die hards. This is turning into a huge nightmare!!!

Who is this? I hope we drop A.Smith, even though we need a veteran. I hope Colin picks up Coach Harbaugh’s system up FAST…

Well another pretty good QB came from the Arena Football League the no one had heard of and I think he went on to be the NFL MVP and won a Super Bowl so I guess here’s for wishful thinking.

Seriously, why do all of you niner fans hate Alex Smith. He’s not that bad. Harbaugh will groom him into a really good qb. He can make every throw. He’s just not that consistant yet. Jim is the best thing that ever happend to him and he knows it. All I’m sayin is we know he’s going to be the qb so lets support him. when fans are booing him on the field how is he supposed to do good. I support Alex and everyone else should too.

  17. By TP on Jul 28, 2011 | Reply

YO ZACH. ALEX JUST NOT CONSISTANT YET??? REALLY??? HOW LONG DO WE HAVE TO WAIT ??? IT”S BEEN LONG ENOUGH. WE WOULD HAVE A BETTER SHOT THROWING KAPERNICK OUT THERE.

  18. By jake on Jul 28, 2011 | Reply

I support Alex he didn’t do all that bad last year. the problum he had last year was the coaching staff. troy smith should of never started when Alex was healthy. If Alex didnt get hurt they would of made the playoffs. but maybe its a good thing he did because they dumped Mike Sing

  19. By Wat on Jul 28, 2011 | Reply

This guy is a camp QB. He’s always injured. just filling a spot until some other old retread QB gets signed. Gore is nuts too – play a whole season then look for an extension.

What is going on??? Who is choosing these players. Look around we will end up dead last in our division. Patrick Willis cant do everything on his own. Why are we not going after all the wonderful talent available in this crazy free agent frenzy. Come on Jed spend some money acquire the talent give us a chance to be the fans we want to be. I cant take another loosing season. SPECIALLY IN THIS DIVISION!!! We should always take this Division. I am a faithful 49ers fan and always will be but please for the life of the fans get it together!!

Alex Smith was drafted into a bad situation. Kind of like David Carr. Neither guy had time, early in their careers, to sit in the pocket and make reads or throws. The offensive lines, for both teams, were below mediocre, at best. David Carr has been whipped on the ground so many times, and I think it ruined his throwing mechanics. That is why he throws three-quarter-sidearm.

I think that, everyone has failed to mention, Alex Smith has had to learn a different playbook in every season, since he had been in the league. How good would Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, etc be, if they had to deal with different coaches and playbooks all of the time? The guy, finally, has an offensive line to play behind and a good coach. The bottom line is, give this guy a chance, with the same playbook and coach for at least two seasons. If he stil sucks, then complain all you want.

By the way, why hasn’t Nate Davis gotten a shot? I know preseason does not mean a whole lot, but the guy makes all of his throws, on the run, too. He makes good reads and has a cannon. He has shown enough, in the preaseason, to be given a roster spot, at least. Unless he doesn’t do anything in practice.

Relax everybody! It’s called extra competition for training camp. Carr or Smith will probably be released. You might not recognize the name, who cares! Scouts are paid too! Get a grip you comment haters before you have a heart attack!

I’m from Philadelphia & i am a die hard 49ers fan…i never heard of this guy…but i think anybody is better than Alex Smith right now…Alex Smith was a 1st pick & definitely didnt live up to the hype yet…When we drafted Alex Smith, i was upset because we should have drafted Aaron Rodgers but they said Alex was a better scrambler then Aaron…We have two potential quaterbacks who i believe they can play better than Alex Smith…that’s Colin & Nate Davis…but there young though…but to make this short anybody is better than Alex Smith

its sad that pete carrol and the hawks got the idea of free agency and are starting to put together a team to compete. unlike us, its one thing to let guys go but we have to replace them too. And not just with garbage! we need defensive players bad. we lost so many games last year that were hella close but the defense couldnt seal it!

Gore is getting older, and they are not putting anyone around him!!! Matt Flynn in GB, would be a good fit, he did good last year when Rodgers went down a couple games. Why are they drafting HIGH SCHOOL studs, and ignoring potential stars, for example Kolb. The Niners are playing in reverse. Oh, how I miss the glory days.

TRY to remember a new coaching staff will have a different philosophy and will want players that fit their schemes. Everybody wants to win so that means a change from the old ( that has not been doing very good ) to something different. WE have to trust the new Coaches and give them a chance to turn things around. Big name players do not always equal wins. A few years ago nobody new who Tom Brady or 90% of the rest of the Patriots were. GIVE IT A CHANCE!

  47. By Brandoin on Jul 28, 2011 | Reply

What people need to understand is tha Alex Smith is as good as were going to get right now. Who else in the free agency was good enough to get us to the playoffs? Alex knows the players, he ran ALL of the organized workouts during the lockout, and his teammates support him, besides crabtree, but crabtrees a bum in his own right. What niner fans need to do is stop booing Alex, & support Alex for ONE more year. Jim Harbaugh will work with him, and if Alex fails, we’ve got Kapernick.

I guess all the haters got it figured out. There must be quite a few football coaches and scouts who post on these threads but also happen to feel so strongly that they must tell the world! Amazing. Maybe this guy was signed to fill out the 90 man roster and he doesn’t really have a shot? Perhaps Alex Smith is only here to give us the best chance to win given his familiarity with the players until they properly groom a rookie and not have another Alex Smith on their hands? IDK just saying

As a niner fan getting rid of alex would of been a good idea not because i hate but becuase he needs a change of ventue. i mean i will give him credit for what hes has tried to do, but the lack of management by the yorks, coach nolan, coach martz, and coach raye and coach sing battle just isnt gonna make him any better. 6 head coaches between 2003 and now. i love my niners and look to another season but we have to get a new starting qb and keep a coach longer than one season

AlexHaters, when Martz was OC alot of his offensive schemes were based upon a 5-7 step drop backs and vertical. WC offence as you all remember is based upon 3-4 step drop backs and a horizontal offense. Hopefully, under the mentoring of Harbaugh, this is more well suited for Alex’s stength. Walsh did that with Virgil Carter in Cinci.. Remember Walsh was 2-14 in his 1st year and 6-10 in his 2nd year and didn’t have all these key players to start with. Harbaugh does with receivers like VDavis, DWalker, JMorgan, TGinn (MCrabtree, sorry but the Diva can’t play in pain) and RB’s FGore (unless he doesn’t sign) and ADavis. All these guys have already played together and know each other. Your going to see YAC stats increase. Can’t wait to see. 49’er Fans… Harbaugh = Hope

SO Relax. This team has been battered over the years with all of these TERRIBLE coaches, now we have a GREAT coach and its going to take some time. We need players in camp though or forget it.

Kyle Orton, Kolb and the rest are no better than Alex, period.

Hey! Lay off Alex Smith!! Support our team for better or for worse. He might not have showed up the last couple of seasons but that was because we had a DEFENSIVE coach!!!! God willing, Harbaugh will get him into shape and make him the leader he needs to be. They only signed him for a year and that’s them saying get your head in the game or get out. Our franchise doesn’t have the money to be buying all these expensive a** players. Let’s not be like the damn Falcons fan base and be as fair weathered as they are…back up our team or shut the hell up and take off that red and gold! Go Niners!!!!!!!!!!!

I usually say it’s tough to be a fan during the season. This is the first time I have not had high hopes before the team has even strapped on the pads in the first practice of training camp. The Nnamdi race is over for us, Nate has not been replaced, Frank doesn’t have a deal, Heitmann, sadly, is gone, there is no center currently on the roster, we have a band of questionable QBs, and we have a pretty rough schedule this season. I’m peaking through the fingers covering my eyes to see how this unfolds. Always faithful but really worried.

First of all, if our OL will give Alex enough time to look down the field and make a play, he’ll be viewed at differently. Look at all the teams with All-Star QB’s; Colts, Pats, Steelers, etc… Their QB have everything in common, an elite OL’s. In fact, their QB’s could cook up a nice juicy steak on a grill before they throw the ball. C’mon now!!! Also, clements played well for his time, but the past couple of years his performance hasn’t been up to bar. Gets burn by WR’s who aren’t top names at times, Nmadi would be hard to obtain, but slim chance is possible. It can happen! Go 49ers! At least gt first place in our weak division pls! Can’t acheive that with the talent we have, just pitiful if they can’t!

Relax! We got the coaching staff we wanted after years of terrible coaches & a revolving door of OC’s. We won’t win a Super Bowl over night. The playoffs are a reachable goal…this team will compete & win the west. Chill everyone…Harbaugh knows way more than us & wouldn’t have taken the job if he didn’t think this team could win. STAY POSITIVE & SUPPORT!

It is quite obvious that the new stadium is more important financially to our team than a winning program. I have been a faithful for 20yrs and was so excited to see the moves the 49ers would make this off-season with all the talent available. If we are going to keep Smith, then hey that the heck lets bring Owens back then. If we want him to succeed then lets give him some weapons to work with. But the way things are looking right now, Im already dreading this year.

I’m beginning to see what the coaching staff is doing. They are rebuilding the team from the ground up. If you have a blown engine, you don’t just replace the head, and hone the cylinder and put on new rings. You’d tear the engine down, and rebuilt with new parts. I think we’ll limp along this year, but we will get better, stronger, and be another dynasty as we have under Eddie D., Coach Walsh, the great Montana, and the “Team of the Decade”!

Why do some of you keep bringing up Nate Davis???? First he went to Seattle & they cut him. Just the other day the Colts signed him to a 2 year contract. Forget about Nate Davis already.

we do have jeremiah masoli on our roster.at least he played at a decent school before he got the boot.(the O and ole miss) how many qb’s from sac state are winning nfl games? i see 4-12 in our future cause alex hasn’t been the answer for what seems like the last 15 years. cant wait till 2012

Where is Troy Smith? atleast he’s a real QB!

  90. By iMas084 on Jul 29, 2011 | Reply

    1. Jeremiah Masoli has been signed as a RB.
    2. Yes, every coach has a different philosophy and scheme but Trent Baalke is in charge of player acquisition.
    3. Addition by way of subtraction does not mean anything if we keep failing to retain talented players

We were told it would be a quiet offseason but the silence is deafening. The majority of the 49er faithful seem to be disappointed by the lack of “effort” the front office has shown in acquiring important pieces to a puzzle missing A LOT of pieces.

Let Nate Clements go and save a ton on cap space–we get it. But not only do the 49ers have to meet the 95% of $120M cap floor, they have to replace the talent that they cut.

If this doesn’t bother you, that’s fine. To each his/her own but personally, I strongly disagree with how this has gone thus far.

I wonder if the 49ers make the playoffs and have about 10 wins and Alex is still the qb are there going to be so many Alex haters.

  92. By Demos Hetfield on Jul 29, 2011 | Reply

Well, he can be released, so we can bring other good QB… the problem is Who? If Eddie were here, we alrready have on our Roster Namdi, Carson Palmer (or other good QB) and Frank Gore wasn’t holding up

Im curious what connection the 49ers owners have with the Mormans. They bow down to their kids and offer them NFL money that their not worth. All of these free agents that were out there early we got none but we waist efforts on nobody’s and sign Alex Smith AGAIN….come on now its time to come clean, whats going on…..this isnt my niners

  94. By B49ERB on Jul 29, 2011 | Reply

Hopefully the 49ers are still trying to find a legitimate quarterback to compete with Alex Smith – I have no choice so I guess we give him one more year – if he doesn’t show drastic improvement he will definitely be gone.

What really concerns me is that we have lost 4 starters and have not replaced one of them – I hear that the team is thinking of not signing Franklin or Lawson and if they lose Goldson, that means 5 Starters from a decent defense will be gone! When are the 49ers planning on starting to find replacements – good players are disappearing every hour!!!! They don’t have one cornerback who can actually cover anyone. Now Crabtree is out AGAIN – it may be time to see what he is worth on the open market?

So great job in not grabbing anything to help us win in freeagency and man got rid of everyone gore is upset and didnt sign any one and now we have Alex the con artist again id rather see harbaugh QB than watch Alex con us again for another year ……and if they are throwing away this season at least man up and say well we believe that the draft next year will be our success so this year just hang on to your wallets and watch the games on TV if you want to see some other teams great moments on film…..looks like pats and arizona in superbowl this year and guess what we can wait till next year ….gets sort of redundent doesnt it

COME ON ORTON COME 2 THE NINERS AND SAVE THE SEASON. PEACE OUT ALEX SMITH YOU HAD YOUR TIME. I BEAT WE WILL SEE A LOT OF FANS WITH BROWN BAGS YOU THER HEAD. JUST LIKE THE LIONS FANS WERE DOING 4 A LONG TIME. I KNOW THAT I HAVE MINE READY. THANK THE YORKS 4 ANTHER WASHED OUT YEAR…..

  98. By one4three_too on Jul 29, 2011 | Reply

Coach Harbaugh I hope you know what your doing….we have faith in you but i just hope we are not in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes again this year. There (((((WAS))))))) plenty of guys that could have help our team win ball games. There are of a couple of players we let go for no value like usual, but we let players that contributed to the few wins we got all of last year; Spikes, Clements,Lawson, Westbrook etc. I can understand Spikes because we have Bohman, Lawson with A. Smith, but the others….smh! We clear cap room for WHAT?

Florida 49er Fan: I do not know about QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson, is he a project? But I do know about Alex Smith, he sucks, why did the 49ers retain him, I thought he would be gone and now he is back. Does the from office know what their doing? To be a good team in the NFL you must have a good QB, we have suffered ever since Garcia left!

To the York’s – PLEASE SELL THE TEAM TO AN OWNER WHO WANTS TO WIN, THIS MIGHT BE YOUR CASH COW, BUT THE FANS WANT THIS TEAM BROUGHT BACK TO GLORY, BRING BACK EDDIE DEBARTOLO, HE IS A WINNER, HE MADE THE FRONT OFFICE BRING SUPERB TALENT, FOR EXAMPLE: Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, etc

  101. By TEEM on Jul 29, 2011 | Reply

You need to look at the DB/WR/Safety Kick Return Mervin Brookins with the San Jose Sabercats and formerly 2010 AFL Championship team Spokane Shock and sign him on. The boy is bad!

  102. By Lybeck1978 on Jul 29, 2011 | Reply

The Dolphins are no longer looking at Kyle Orton, we NEED to make a move on Orton. Orton has a very respectable record unlike Kolb if you as me, he’s underated in comparison to these other free agent QB’s so we might get him for cheap. Plus I think bringing on Orton will really step up Alex Smith’s game play, only iron on iron makes it sharp not no young kids with no experience.

  103. By ninertime on Jul 29, 2011 | Reply

lol at you people who think we should have signed KOLB. I was honestly so SO SOOO happy that Kolb went to Arizona. He only did well because he had a great OC and great recivers in philly. He will get murdered at arizona… poor guy. He will spend more time on his back than a two dollar… ummmmm.

  104. By coachfred on Jul 29, 2011 | Reply

The Niners Signed two local kids from the Bay Area that both played in the PAC-10 Masoli and Bethel-Thompson(Mac)…. Alex they are gonna show you what it means to play wit HEART….. Coach knows QBs

Let’s sit back and watch and give it a chance. You have A. smith, Collin K, and McLeoud as QB’s. you have the future in one of these 3 so no need to spend alot of doe in FA on a QB, makes no sense. You have a salary cap in place, now we need to get a couple 2 or 3 players to fill in, that’s the trick, don’t blow your load on 1 guy.

Hello, the coach is highly accountable here and a good one, way better than the others so let’s give it a chance.

Did we all forget the SORRY defense we had last yr?

  107. By Jasmin J. on Jul 30, 2011 | Reply

What are we doing? Why haven’t we been in any talks with any free agents??? At this point Vince Young would have made me happy!!! He goes another year down the drain!!!

  108. By John Kreutzmann on Jul 30, 2011 | Reply

Jed York, you are not keeping your promise. Your uncle was not afraid to make bold moves. Try to be more like him! You need to sign some good FA players that can make a difference. The Niners need to sign players to replace those that you let go. How can you justify losing so many key players and not replacing them?
All of your rival teams are signing good players and you are not. Act quickly or this team will have another losing season. Keep your promise!

Paitience Girls Patience, we don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes. Thanks god none of us are good coaches from the armchair, we would be defeated before the games begin.

This Alex Smith thing…What are they trying to teach us a lesson like in “Anger Management” ? ? Watching this situation happen year in year out is like watching that friend of yours in a bad marriage. This thing is doing nothing good for him, but for some reason year in year out he stays in it. All of his friends give him all the advice they can to leave, and for some reason he stays in it. What is it about Alex Smith that keeps them bringing him back every year? I thought FOR SURE this was his last year. I mean least year after a few years after his last year. I went to the last game last year and he was overthrowing recievers that were wide open on numerous occasions. It’s worse in person than on TV. This guy does not have it and never will. Why not Vince Young?? Or just give it to the Rookie, get all undrafted QBs and do what you can. Besides that what is this team doing to build a strong Defense or sign some exciting receivers or ?? – OK I’m done, time to watch the SF Giants – Hey wait, Maybe Sabean can work for the 49ers too. The guy seems to know how to get it done!!

It doesn’t seem like the 9er organization puts in as much time studying for the draft as the fans do. Our last two drafts should have been graded out as A+, but we ended up with a B- for 2010 and a C for 2011.
