The campers at the 49ers annual three-day Youth Football Camp were in for a special treat to start their experience at team headquarters in Santa Clara.
Three well-known 49ers alumni were there to greet them on Monday as they checked into the first day of the team’s annual instructional camp that teaches boys and girls ages 7-14 the importance of football fundamentals as well as crucial life skills.
Former tight end Brent Jones and offensive linemen Guy McIntyre and Dave Fiore were the ones to lead the campers through morning drills that stressed various football fundamentals from the proper stances to use, to how to throw a football, to how to catch passes properly.
And really, there’s not many players more qualified to lead catching and route-running drills than Jones, a four-time Pro Bowl tight end, who played 11 seasons all for the 49ers and won three Super Bowl rings in the process.
“We want to teach you the fundamentals that are being taught in the high school and college game,” Jones told a group of campers.
McIntyre and Fiore led campers through offensive line drills, stressing the importance of stance and footwork as keys to the position.
We caught up with Jones after the morning session right before campers broke off for their lunch break. The former tight end seemed to really enjoy his experience with the campers.
“It’s always great to come back at the old facility and see the excitement and the enthusiasm of the kids,” Jones said. “It’s great.”
Jones marveled at the camper’s ability to learn on the fly as he showed them the same tips he learned from Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh during his playing days.
“These kids just soak it up,” Jones said. “You let them know, these are the routes we ran, the routes that Jerry Rice ran.”
Jones, Fiore and McIntyre signed autographs for every camper, 130 in total, and each enjoyed the friendly banter with the kids while signing their 49ers Youth Football Camp jerseys.
Jones also spent time mingling with proud parents who watched their kids from the sidelines.
