Turner Talks 49ers HOF, Team Museum

Posted by Taylor Price on July 7, 2011 – 1:18 PM

Four-time Super Bowl champion and current 49ers VP of Football Affairs Keena Turner visited the Razor and Mr. T show on KNBR-680 to discuss a number of team-related topics, most notably, the 49ers Hall of Fame fan vote and the creation of a 49ers Museum for the team’s new stadium in Santa Clara.

The former star linebacker and current team executive joined Ralph Barbieri and Tom Tolbert Wednesday evening to comment on the some of the recent developments at 4949 Centennial Blvd.

Turner talked about current league issues, some of his fondest 49ers memories and he also shared his views of the team’s recent announcement of an annual fan vote which determines the newest member of the Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame.

“We feel the process allows us to recognize all of our history, our recent history, our older history – it’s all very important to us,” Turner said.

Fans have until July 15 to vote as many times as they’d like for nominees Roger Craig, George Seifert and Gordy Soltau.

“All the guys I look at on this list should and will be in at some point,” Turner said.

Barbieri asked Turner if Craig’s popularity would push him over the top in the fan vote, but Turner who played with Craig and for Seifert, didn’t think it was an automatic win for Craig by any means.

“A lot of people feel that way because of the career Roger had and his name recognition, but when you look at what George did when he took over and the defenses he had before he was a head coach is certainly deserving, and obviously Gordy made All-Pro three times. He was versatile and played nine wonderful years.”

To ensure no player, coach or administrator from any era is overlooked, 49ers Ownership has also intuited an annual Ownership selection to accompany the fan vote winner.

Turner also talked about the creation of a 49ers Museum that will be the physical home of the 49ers Hall of Fame. Though the team’s Hall of Fame Plaques are currently displayed at Candlestick Park, Turner said the team will ultimately create a museum at the new stadium in Santa Clara.

“It’s exciting for me to be a part of this as we look to build the new stadium,” he added.
