49ers.com Profiles New Coaching Staff

Posted by Taylor Price on May 23, 2011 – 1:31 PM

Now that Jim Harbaugh has assembled his first NFL coaching staff for the 2011 season, 49ers.com will profile his coaches in a series of “Coach ‘Em Up” videos and stories to be posted throughout the offseason.

In sitting down with the coaches, we learned plenty about their coaching history, personal highlights as well as insight on their personalities away from the game. We’ve already interviewed a quarter of the coaching staff and have plenty to learn on the remainder of the coaches.

As you can see by this clip, the staff is unified by its passion and undying love for the game of football. It’s a common thread throughout the group, who we’ve come to find out, has crossed paths several times in the professional and collegiate ranks.

Here’s a glimpse of the interesting notes you’ll learn about the staff:

Tight ends coach Reggie Davis, a former NFL tight end, enjoys playing the bass guitar whenever he’s not breaking down film or being a father to five children.

Special teams coordinator Brad Seely won three Super Bowl championships with the New England Patriots and is not satisfied with his previous accomplishments. “As a coach you’re always looking forward. What are we doing today? What are we doing tomorrow to get one of those rings?”

Secondary coach Ed Donatell won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos, coaching in the same capacity as he will be with the 49ers. The veteran coach has coordinator experience and has worked with some of the game’s all-time greats including 49ers Hall of Fame safety Ronnie Lott when they were with the New York Jets.

But for more on the coaching staff, you’ll have to tune in the first “Coach ‘em Up” segment with quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst. It airs this Thursday (May, 26) on 49ers.com.

Stay tuned.

Congrats to whomever it was that developed this idea. Super!! Niner Faithful – I believe we finally have it right. Its been my feeling the past 4 to 5 years there was a disconnect – that we never had THE right coaching staff and THE right players both at the same time. And the bulk of our problem was on the coaching side. My congratulations to young Jed, and I tip my hat at your selection of this GM and especially you two getting your heads together and selecting Coach Harbaugh. You could NOT have done better. Thank you!

Every year i am excitited as we all are. this year no different. I still think we need to grab a QB when free agency opens up at least make a stab at one or two. Same old story will he or wont he do it this year, i dont think he has it even if you brought in Montana and young to coach Alex it wont help. he doesnt have enough grit or superior talent to make it happen when its on the line. So yes i like the waqy we look right now accept for the QB spot, but as a lot of peeps are saying….maybe this year …if not maybe next year. I will watch every game and gring when the 3 and outs start up again.

What the niners should’ve done was keep Mike McCarthy, I don’t like talking about the past but look at what he did with Rodgers. Ran basicly the same type of offense as Alex did in college. I like the fact that Eddie D is back as a “consultant”.

this coaching staff sounds like they know what they are talking about. A good coach is gonna build the offense around the most important position and thats the quarterback. If Harbaugh thinks that Alex is our best option in this lockout plauged season than you have to believe coach knows best, and if not than we are doomed know matter who are quarterback is. Walsh had a system called “West Coast Offence”; he drafted a quarterback that fit into his offense. Harbaugh has his system so if thats his system and he thinks alex can fit it than so be it. Sure if this was fantasy football I’m sure he’d pick Brady or Payton but it’s not so he can’t’ He has to work with what he has. Time will tell if he thinks there are better opions are available, but until the lockout is over and free angency is available he’s doing what he is supposed to, working with what he has, that is gonna produce the best results. A lot of people( if they studied football) know that harbaugh, by bringing smith back just made a VERY smart move. If the lockout isnt over until a week before, or even after the season is set to begin, than your gonna want somebody who knows this team and has a relationship with all of the players. For that reason and that reason alone Harbaugh gets a 10 in the football smarts department!

I was shocked to learn what the players union turned down that led to the lockout. The owners offered huge increases in benefits and income for both retirees and players. Huge!!! In my opinion the union is the problem here, not the owners.
