Report: Alex Smith Willing to Return

Posted by Taylor Price on May 17, 2011 – 4:35 PM

Alex Smith is currently an unrestricted free agent, but the six-year pro told local reporters there’s a good likelihood he will return to the 49ers for a seventh season.

Smith didn’t want to be quoted by media outlets watching 49ers players go through player-organized workouts on Tuesday, but CSN Bay Area anchor Mindi Bach and 49ers beat writer Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee both relayed his comments.

Alex Smith needs to go By BY. He sucked for over 6 years at San Fran. I would like to see the Niners Win Not Loose. If he is the Quarterback the Niners will LOOSE. GOD Please Please make him GO AWAY.

Here’s hoping Harbaugh can work his magic with Alex and the Niners light up the NFC West =]

  4. By Jeremy on May 17, 2011 | Reply

he is probably the best option we have plus hes got potential u got to admit we’ve seen him make some great plays, i hope with coach Harbaugh Alex will succeed

  5. By Tommy D on May 17, 2011 | Reply

And David Carr is any better. Or bring in someone else as a free agent and waste money like we did with Clements? Stop hating he would’ve won the game against the number one team Falcons if Clements needed the ball. Lead an excellent comeback against the Saints. And you just want to hate on him. You will be like the other Fans of our team and jump on the wagon once he starts winning. But the wagon will be full. Trust Harbough, he’ll make him a winner.

    Get rid of him!!!!
I want a chance to make the playoffs, I don’t want to sit around and watch this bum throw away another season

  7. By Tim on May 17, 2011 | Reply

WHY? Hasn’t done squat in 6 years. What makes him think he will do any good this year? He and the 9ers need to part ways

  8. By dynasty80 on May 17, 2011 | Reply

If he stays and succeeds, it will say a lot about Harbaugh vs. past coaches.

  9. By DieHard49ERFan on May 17, 2011 | Reply

Alex Smith had 6 years to prove himself. He proved that he was a great College QB. He also Proved that he SUCKS as a Pro QB. If he comes back as the Niners starting or even back up QB. They will SUCK again.

  10. By keerut on May 17, 2011 | Reply

hes ok but he just need a good coach that will stay more than one year he is a good hard working player

  11. By Tommy D on May 17, 2011 | Reply

Smith had a qb rating better than Farve, Sanchez, Bradford, Hasleback, and McNabb. with only play about ten or eleven games. What else can you ask for from a guy who never had an offensive minded coach? This year you’ll see an offense that is custom to his skill set.

how many years its gonna take to keep going with alex smith every year and end up having a loosing seasons. I say we go after a vet. quaterback

All you Alex fans how old are you? The reason I ask is you think hes going to do somthing speacial. Yet he has not done a dam thing. I can remember the Glory days of Montana and Young. Those were real QBs. This guy is a JOKE. are you Alex Smith Fans young Kids or somthing? Really fopr Gods sake wake the hell up.

  15. By Kevin on May 17, 2011 | Reply

You guys do realize its a 1 year contract, and right now its our best option because Kap is not ready to start from day 1. They’re going to be running an offense similar to last years, he’s already comfortable with the team. I’m not saying he’s the QB of the future but he’s the best option we have right now as a stop gap.

  16. By chris on May 17, 2011 | Reply

smith is a grear player he has had a new offense every year, and he s learned many great offensives . that not something u let go. niners have struggled on the line when his mistakes are made I wouldn’t let him go especially that we have a true qb coach now. teams are ment to be built, whoever says let him goe doesn’t know football…..you let players like this go he is a leader when its time he will lead…….

Oh my freaking god, he is WILLING to return? Like I am WILLING to back over him with a truck. I’d say nice knowing you, but that would be a lie. If the Niners keep him on the starting roster for more than two games they will have proved themselves to be the worst decision makers in the league. F#$% you a hole.

QB Alex Smith has potential, it’s the coaching problem he’s been dealing with. I myself am a QB for a high school, and i’ve been through 2 different Head Coaches and 3 different QB Coach, and it’s hard to transition to different playbooks from those coaches. I believe in Alexx, and I hope he does well in the 2012 season.

  21. By Tommy D on May 17, 2011 | Reply

I’m 26 and remember the young days and Montana beating us in K.C. But those days are long gone. And being someone that remembers those days you would imagine you’d mention ummmmm…….. Jerry Rice, Stokes, Ricky Waters, and Dion Sanders as key components to those “Winning” teams. Also didn’t they have a great college coach, that went to the Pro game. What’s his name….. Bill Walsh. Yea that’s him. Don’t put all the blame on one position Crabtree should step up along with Ginn and Morgan. Clements should take a pay cut, bring in Asamua in and have on descent and one shut down corner and start winning.

Alex Smith deserves a shot, A chance to prove he can take the 49ers to the playoffs and win a Super Bowl. I like the idea of this last chance it reeks of the possibility of greatness. Best of luck Alex Smith get it done man.

I like how you haters blame the quarterback for everything.. Not the rookie offensive line that can barely block, or the recievers that just slipped outta their hands in crucial moments or the defense that hasnt been up to par or The coaching staff that changes every year.. I think you people just need someone to blame.. The team will be great .. They just need to get people to fill the positions for more than one season..but if you don’t like it go watch another team .. I’m tired of seeing all you people whine..

Yes it takes a team to win but. If your QB cant get the ball to his WR or TE how do you expect to win. You need a QB who also doent stare down one reciver. etc etc

  32. By Rob Bleeds Red and Gold on May 17, 2011 | Reply

Last years failures fall squarely on Singletary and the rest of the coaching staff – I was at every home game last year, and was successfully able to predict almost every single play that the offense was going to run – and if I was able to do that, the defensive coordinator of ANY team in the NFL was doubtlessly able to as well. “Hmmmmm… I think they’re going to run it up the middle. What do you know? They did! I think they’re going to try to run it up the middle again… Whaddya know? I called it again. Now it’s third and long – good luck!”
If you put ANY qb in third and long on each and every drive, you will be lucky to have as much success as Smith had last season.
Add to it a bunch of chanting idiots in the stands who start to boo their own starting qb because the coaching staff can’t run an offense to save their own lives and you’ve got a recipe for failure. Personally, I’m kind of amazed he had as much success as he did with that kind of support.

All of that said, I do think it’s a mistake for Smith to come back to SF. The crowd is clearly against him and it’s probably best for everyone to move on… but with the lockout questions in the air, well, he’s definitely better than Carr.

Alex is a good QB with the coaches that are sucks. He just needed a good coaches. He won some games without good coaches. What do you expect from him in the past years without good coaches? He won some games with very basic offense that other team can figure out right away what the 49ers are going to call. West coast offense is a special offense that is hard for the other teams to defend. I believe in coaches that we have right now especially Jim Harbaugh. I believe in whatever the coaches and management will decide.

You still didn’t mention that both those guys worked with Walsh? You mean that either Nolan and Singletary were at his level? And by wasting money on a vet qb or throwing Kapernack into the fire……like we did with smith is going to be a better idea. You my friend are the traitor and obviously not a die hard member of the Niner Nation.

That’s a good view any other qb out there arent on the same page as Alex is with these receiver. Just deal with it for the time being, coach might pull out some magic and make Alex feel confident and play well to prove he isn’t a bust…..

see people complain….but he has made great plays….yea he made bad ones….but last year he did good….he nearly led the saints victory…..but some bad calls came up n that bad punt dropping incident cost us big…saints was good….but clements gave up the ball again….coulda beat the panthers but david carr couldnt throw 20 yards for squat….the seahawks one the first week becuase they knew are plays….this past season was ours for the playoffs but dumb stuff happened…becuase bad coaching…i believe in harbaugh n i believe in smith…maybe not for the long term…unless he shows other wise this season…..but the the coaching this year will be a big difference the way we prepare a gameplan and the way we use our playmakers

Alex is unproven and inconsistent because he has had unproven and inconsistent coaching. You armchair QB’s questioning Jim Harbaugh’s decision are loyal to the 49ers, but without an understanding of football. Harbaugh was a QB, has recruited QB’s and has transformed QB’s into winners. Your idiotic second guessing is simply football immaturity. Heck I bet most of you knuckleheads slamming Alex Smith have never played organized ball.

Of course Seifert was coached, but did barry switzer build the Dallas team that one. Just like Walsh, who left the team to him, Switzer get that Dallas team left to him by Jimmy Johnson.

yes he may be better than alex smith athlete wise…but mentally i dont think he’ll be there soon like other pro ready quarter backs like bradford…he came out of a pistol offense….taking snaps under center…take 3-5 step drops….when alex came in….2 seasons we didnt have anything on offense….no line really…..average running game at best…..okay tight end….so yea he’s been in 6 years…but two with nothing really….no line for protection…..and pracitically another two years with injury….so ur gonna hate on a guy whose willing to bust his butt off for a team with a fan base who boo’s him….he has a fire in him right now that wants to prove people wrong…that he has what it takes…i think it does…now that we have a legit coaching staff…..let him take the snaps n see what he does…..if he does fail…..then ill say get rid of him if not keep him as back up…becuase he’s better than most back up’s in the league today

First off half of you know nothing about the game, you just sit on your couch every sunday ini your twenty dollar replica jersey ( while I’m wearing the real deal ), judging the game like you could do or know better.. Give me a break! lol.

So, my point is this. You say Alex Smith is a bum? The truth is, the Niners have had bum coaches and a terrible O line the whole time he’s been there, not to mention having to learn a new offense every summer. But yet you say he sucks! LMAO. I guarantee you that if the Niners would have drafted Aaron Rodgers, he would have just as much success if not less than Alex Smith. A QB can only be as good as his coaches teach him and his O line gives him the time to actually throw the ball.. Its funny how you football morons say, ” see Alex sucks” every time he gets sacked! Lmao like it was his fault and not the O lines..

To end this rant about the ignorance of most football fans.. Alex is the best QB option we have and he is a damn good one! Give the guy a break, and learn to take up your issues with the source of the Niners problems..

    Ignorance baffles me

Some people want Alex Smith gone, and don’t want him to have another chance in SF. Some people are willing to give him another year while Kaepernick is developing over the next year. I can understand either position. Whatever side you’re on, if Alex Smith is in a 49ers uniform, you got to hope for the best. Feel free to expect the worse, but hope for the best. Booing Smith while he’s out on the field isn’t going to accomplish a thing. I don’t believe that Smith is the future of the 49ers franchise, but I have hope for the upcoming season, and I support anyone in the red and gold. Even number eleven.

  65. By 49erHarleyRider on May 17, 2011 | Reply

Alex will do fine under the new coach. He’s done fine. He’s had bad games and he’s had good. No team loses because of one guy. As I recall, there were a couple games this last season that were ‘in the bag’, but the team couldn’t reel it in. Like Clements not taking a knee. Or DAVID CARR (the name DieHard49ERFan was probably chanting) throwing an pick-6 for the loss in the last 1:30 of a game. Speaking of Carr…he did so great that . . . Troy Smith started while A. Smith was injured…

To those who want the rookie to start…Alex Smith has struggled partly (not totally) because he started before he was ready. I think the plan Coach H has is to keep Alex on long enough for Colin to get some experience and get ready to start. Great move. They aren’t aiming for the super bowl this year, but are building up to be serious contenders in the very near future.

  66. By Eric on May 17, 2011 | Reply

Alex Smith needs to go!!! six years to prove he can’t do better than 1 game away from making the playoffs is long enough for me to be convinced that he won’t get us to the superbowl which is the ultimate goal. I rather see Nate Davis get a shot for starting QB then Smith and Carr! The niners are a now team… The division is theirs for the taking but without a QB its another year wasted!

YES! Alex will finally have a fair fresh start with a proven GOOD OFFENSE AND GREAT COACH. The niners being armed with Kaepernick and Smith will be beautiful. everyone says he sucks he needs to go because those are the people who dont know why he performed so poorly. Besides injuries the guys almost had a new coordinator and new system every year of his career he hasnt even had a chance to develop and perfect the plays. With Harbaugh and Kaepernick he now has a great offensive system and a great coach to learn it from while being able to split the time with a great rookie.

  78. By 49erGoldRush on May 17, 2011 | Reply

I’m not surprised Alex is returning considering he and his wife are expecting a child. I really want Kaepernick to get the starting job, who knows he might be what we’ve been looking for all this time. If he sucks, then let’s see what Alex can do. After starting off last season with an 0-5 record, we really don’t have much to lose. But in the end, I am willing to trust Harbaugh and whatever decision he makes!

Dude if i must explain to you that stats don’t mean everything then it’s just now this second i relize what i’m dealing with my god, first off Sanchez QB’d his team to not one but count with me TWO afc championships appearances as for Bradford he was the rookie of the year something only Alex Smith could dream of for gods sake man get a grip.

  80. By DieHard49ERFan on May 17, 2011 | Reply

First off if they benched Sanchez or Bradford for like three games (not that they ever would) then there QB rating would go up they did after all play more games and i wonder why that is? hmmmmm.

  81. By Tommy D on May 17, 2011 | Reply

Stats are in the record book losing in count it TWO afc championship games doesn’t make him any better, the jets were a better built team. Take Revis and put him on Baltimore and they are where the jets were. Please man look at the stats and see that even tho they played in 16 games and Smith played in 12 at the most, Bradford had four more tds than smith, and Sanchez only three with four more games than smith. Please man arguing with you is making me feel even more dumb. This is like taking candy from a baby showing that your wrong with every statement you make. What’s your next point?????? So I can prove this one wrong to.

  82. By Grayson on May 17, 2011 | Reply

The fact that the Jets went to the AFC championship in the last two seasons with a QB that has a lower rating than Smith just goest to show you that there are more holes in the 49ers roster than a QB. The Jets have a much better defense, and a stronger group of receivers than the Niners.

Good thing he has armadillo skin because most QBs would’ve given up along time ago. Go Alex and GO 9ers.

I for one screamed and yelled watching Smith last season but i think i screamed more at the awfull calls that Singletary made constantly running Gore who was the offense last season but with the West Cost offense coming back he might very well exceed his expectations when he actually has a warm arm because he has been throwing the ball during the game

If Alex can play four quarters every Sunday (and sometimes Monday and maybe Thursday) the way he played the last quarter of the 2010 Saints and Eagles games, then the Niners will win a Super Bowl.

Alex is frustrating because he shows glimpses of being so good. Hopefully, Harbaugh can get the genie out of the bottle with the 49ers much-maligned #1 overall pick.

Somehow, Alex reminds me a bit of John Brodie. Can Harbaugh lead Alex Smith on a similar resurgence? I sure hope so.

I want the Niners to win. And if Coach thinks Alex Smith can do it, I’m right there with him!

    Go Niners!

In the history of football has there ever been a team that had 6 different offensive coordinators in 6 years? Add 2 head coaches with no offensive backround and don’t expect Mike and Mike to be head coaching soon. You’ve got to admit Alex Smith has been poorly handled. I’m not huge on Alex Smith but he’s our best option. I think Harbaugh can bring some continuity to the offense

we should have picked Jason Campbell in the 2005 nfl draft (chosen 1st round pick 25). he has better stats in every category that smith, the niners could have saved millions of dollars to use on real talent on a different position but NNOOOOO we are stuck with one of the biggest busts of 1st pick overall in nfl history.

  108. By pinotguy on May 17, 2011 | Reply

I’m not yet convinced that bringing Smith back would be such a bad move. I can vividly recall the season he had under the tutelage of Norv Turner as his QB’s coach. I believe Harbaugh knows how to push the same buttons and, more importantly, in the same manner. Still, I’d also like to see the ‘Niners make a serious attempt at acquiring Carson Palmer and let there be an open competition in camp. From what I can gather, he’s going to be available. It would be real interesting to see how the change in scenery and organizational philosophy affects him.

Before all of these moves can take place though, we need to pray there’s going to be a season in 2011.

  109. By We Cut Who? on May 17, 2011 | Reply

***Alex, Start Winning*** Currently very few teams would be standing in line to put huge sums of money into him due primarily to the bad NFL tape on him. If he stays put he wont be looking at a huge contract either, but at least it keeps his life stable and with the new family addition I believe he’ll become motivated to succeed. The tape isn’t all bad mind you. If you use your eyes you’ll see that several (nearly 50%) of those interceptions were tipped at the line or mishandled by the receiver. One could easily make a case that Alex Smith is the single unluckiest QB to be drafted in the last seven years. In the distant past, under offensive coordinator Norv Turner, Alex seemed to be budding out as a competitive player. But under overlord Mike Nolan he wasn’t often supported and was actually scapegoated by Nolan for not being tough enough, freshly separated shoulder or not. Later on, Mike Martz electing not to start Alex Smith in favor of… who was that guy that he did start again?… was a pretty severe error in judgement. I mean really, Alex couldn’t have possibly lost that many games and had nearly salvaged the season that Martz had bungled away. Maybe just one more start would have done it? Mike Singletary was just a pure joke. Singletary shouldn’t even be allowed in the weight room. Good grief. So now comes Jim Harbaugh… are things supposed to just neatly work out this time? Yes. Will they? Probably…yes. I think they can. It’ll just take winning to prove it. Kevin Kolb won’t be coming to town since he’s far too expensive and we just rolled the dice on the Kaepernick pick. It’s less likely than some people will admit but an older free agent QB isn’t coming in here and taking Alex Smith’s job. He just has the physical tools, skills and whiteboard expertise to keep the job if his mindset is correct. He’ll have to win the team as well, long before he wins any game. And yes, it still seems like Alex Smith’s job to lose.

  110. By Davi9er on May 17, 2011 | Reply

Yeah, this is really too bad that fans are so down on a player like Alex Smith. Yes, I’ve seen what’s happened also and Alex has had a miserable 6 years with the 48ers due to mostly lackluster teams, coaches, and offensive lines. As a long time 49er fan, I remember these same remarks about Steve Young before he won a Super Bowl….I think Alex Smith could still be a star in the NFL.

WOW so much criticism considering his the teams best option for the upcoming season(LOCKOUT) would you guys rather throw in Kaep in with no training camp and no preparation? might as well sign Smith, he did improve after his injury and he was also playing good before he got injured, also isn’t Harbaugh supposed to be a QB guru? Smith finished with the best TD/INT ratio in his career an he already has the chemistry down with the offense, he is better then most QB’s on most teams anyway according to his rating %, so quit whining and support your team people. After reading all these comments I can agree with most of them. Alex Smith is definitely the most unlucky QB. He does make some bad mistakes from time to time but what QB doesn’t. In all honesty I feel that he has more upside then down at this point. He has nothing to lose and with the new coach and staff I know he will step it up. He has all the tools with height, athleticism, understands our offense and white board knowledge. I’m not telling all the Alex haters to love him but understand that our D compared to those teams that went to the playoffs is a joke. I don’t believe Alex is the joke but I felt our D was going to dominate last year but that was not the case. If our D steps up it will make any QB’s job a lot easier. We do need better coners and Clements needs to take a pay cut so we can buff up our D.

If the 49ers as an orginization cannot see and comprehend that this team will go nowhere with Alex Smith as their QB, why should we support them….they don’t support what we’ve been saying for the last couple of years……we spend our hard earned money to go see them play and for what? To see Alex bring us down…….we as fans should make a statement and protest at our home games. This is getting out of hand……almost a decade of losing seasons, this is a straight shame. I support my team all the way, but if they “Jed York” cannot see and hear what all 49er faithful fans do, whats the use. Alex Smith deserves a try with no pressure fromm all the a smith haters, he is a fine qb. and deserves a real chance, he has gone thru so many different coaches its not even funny, and finally he will get a chance to play some offense in which he is good, hopefully we can give him a game plan where he can throw the ball without being obviuos he is throwing it, game plan for the past few years has been run on 1st down run on second and of course 3rd and long, he has to throw when everybody is expecting a throw, come on give the guy some options and let him run the show.

There aren’t any better options on the market right now and this guy is potential in a bottle. I believe he has it in him to do better than ever. He just needs a great coach which he now has. Alex may or may not be the 49er QBOTF but he’s as good as any other free agent available and Harbaugh likes him, so this is good news. I think the “experts”, who rated him a top prospect in the 2005 are correct. The 49ers have not provided him with consistency, adequate offensive weapons or decent coaching, so he has not developed well to date but those deficiencies have been recognized and addressed, so I want to see him for another year or two. If he blossoms into the QBOTF, resign him. If not, Kaepernick will have some time to develop by the time an informed decision is ready to be made. The losing seasons are a team fault and Alex should not be looked at as the face of that. Get over your bias, haters.

He is useless with a bad attitude. If they re-sign him, it should be for the league minimum. Where is his room for negotiation here. He should see the writing on the wall when they drafted Kaepernick, who WILL become the franchise quarterback. Alex Smith is in the ranks of Ryan Leaf, Danny Wurfel, that fat former quarterback from Oakland, etc…..all PATHETIC football players.

It comes down to Smith is our QB, you love niners like I do, get on board. Harbaugh is awesome. He will tailor the offense to Smith (who is our best option right now)
    Carr, he sucks,
Kap, keep him on the bench, let him learn and not get hurt.
What happened to Troy? I liked him. Especially with a new offense, they are on equal ground.
I place my faith not in Alex, but in Harbaugh. I have seen some greatness in between all the crap from Smith. Hopefully Harbaugh can get more greatness and less crap. IF YOU LOVE THE NINERS GET ON BOARD OR BECOME A RAIDER FAN. Young and Montana were awesome not doubt, but they unfortunately are not under center.

So yeah Alex will get better…its been six long years. So yeah 4 more years and Harbaugh will be run out because he couldnt get Alex a good running back or tight end or recievers or good line. Maybe by then Joe Montana will be a coach for us and he will say yeah Alex is our guy he just needs a few more years to develope …and mayb e by the time he is 38 Alex will get us into the playoffs. Some have said he doesnt have what he needs to be a good QB. So your saying our whole line our TE our RB our WR’s and our defense are not good enough for Alex….let him be a free agent and find a team that has everything he needs. His reads are bad his accuracy is bad and at what point do we admit hes a bust and move on …why is no one crying for Ryan leaf or Jamarcus Russell to get better players so they can do something ….

I think that Alex Smith coming back for another season is a great idea. If there is a season. I kind of can imagine the niners starting with the digital system of last year’s playbook and moving into the WCO gradually. If Smith stays and is able to stand out among the competition, then why not let him play. And actually, if things don’t go well and turn south, then perhaps the niners will be lined up to take Luck next year. That could be an interesting situation.

It’s to tell if the guy is good or bad. He makes bad decisions all the time and is not a great runner. what the 9er’s need is a QB that can pull the ball down and run. if you look at most great teams including past 9er’s teams, Montana, and Young made great discisions with the ball under pressure, lioke when to run and where. They also had a great line for protection.
Smith being a great college QB does not have the time and the presence of mind in the faster game to make good decisions under pressure, and we have seen this time and time again. I’m not haten just staten the facts.
Coaching might help some but I dont think so. Let’s see what happens with a line. no more than a game maybe two.
I think the 9ers should go to the new rookie after that at lease a quarter or two per game, he proably will out perform Smith like most backups did last year.
I almost s**t my pants when Smith came back from injury and started losing.

Really? That loser Alex Smith again? I thought he said no way he was going to come back to the Niners and he was going to test free agency. His agent must have told him to stay with the only team that would take him. The Bengals #3 QB would beat Alex Smith in a QB competition, not to mention they’re getting rid of the wrong Smith. What a joke Alex Smith is. Here’s to another 6-10 season or worse.

Only one Comment: Last year, was our offensive line horrible or was the quarterback? or do you think the receivers were horrible?

If offensive line was horrible to protect Alex smith , change them, if receivers were horrible, change them. but if both offensive line and receiver were Not horrible, then I think we have to think about who is going to be the next quarterback.

That should give us the answer.

Alex has talent. We should have won at least 4 more games than we did. The losses were not his falt. The ignorant fans of the Bay Area are many. This guy can play, it’s a team sport. He needs some help. Just ask Steve Young. You same people were down on him. Remember?

  157. By bookbum75 on May 18, 2011 | Reply

Alex Smith should be resigned -for two years! David Carr is not the answer. Colin Kaepernick isn’t going to be ready this season, especially with OTA’s and preseason likely shortened as well. In fact, Kaepernick probably won’t be ready to take the reins in 2012 either. The last two head coaches Alex has had have been defensive minded. He has never had an OC longer than Jimmy Raye, and under him and Johnson he couldn’t throw the ball unless it was third and long or in the two minute drill. Alex should thrive under Harbaugh, and I hope he gets more than just one year to do so.

Our TEAM will need our full support. We must trust in the coaches to be able to turn things around for all of our players, including Smith. Regardless of WHY Harbaugh wants him, we must respect his decision and give him support. Give the coach a chance to do some work! GO NINERS!!

I disagree with everyone saying Alex Smith is our best option. I am by no means trying to hype Troy Smith up to be a franchise quarterback, but when compared to Alex which Smith was it winning games? Alex Smith has his moments where he looks like a very decent quarterback but those moments are few and far between. Give Troy the ball and look out there for other options once this lockout garbage is over. I am still a believer that we might be able to get a veteran like Kyle Orton this season.

Bottom line is Alex Has showed potential, and he is the best option for right now. We will have to see what happens with Alex now that he has Harbaugh a coach that is known to be on a hot streak and a QB groomer. Then add the thought of draft pick Colin Kaepernick and you have a battle. while those two are testing each other i think we need to get rid of Carr and bring in an older veteran player at the QB position. Someone who can come in and show these young guys how to win. Preferably someone who has won before. Give it a couple of years and build on what we have, dont make any more major changes. let the team build chemistry.

Alex can be great with Harbaugh. Give him a chance to prove himself under an offense oriented coach and then make your decision. The past 6 years have been an experiment with defensive coaches which is why he didn’t succeed. Give him a chance and see where it takes us next year. Going with a new quarterback will take a couple years to develop so what is there to lose?

Maybe because of all the weak coach’s and weak Off-Coach’s he had but if we can go to the super bowl with him, find if not just get one who will. I think we should give him a change, if he has a losing recoded by week 5 or had more picks then TDs then he has to go no matter if throws 400 yards a game., If he has BY WEEK 5 13TDS BUT 20 PICK I mean you know its time for a change.

This is the first time Alex Smith has had a decent head coach with a proven record (college standpoint). He’s had a proven offensive coordinator back in 2006 when Norv Turner was making the calls. I thought he did a decent job that year and could’ve had a winning record the following year if Norv Turner stayed. Alex Smith deserves another chance to prove himself with a good coach. Coach Singletary and Jimmy Raye didn’t have any chemistry so I wasn’t surprised it didn’t last long.

  170. By All 4s and 9s on May 18, 2011 | Reply

Alex Smith has already wasted 6 years of our lives, you really want to give him a 7th!?! You think yet another coach coming in is just going to somehow change him into a good quarterback. You give a quarterback three years, THREE, to show that he has the potential to take your team in the right direction, not seven. If he does not help your team win, you move on, it’s that simple. Since we drafted Alex Smith he has been nothing but terrible, and these sparks of brilliance you see always seem to come in the first game back after being benched 4 games for being terrible, then he has one good outing and we put the rest of the season on his shoulders and end up in third place in the weakest division in the NFC. I would rather have any other BACKUP qb in the league as my starter rather than Alex Smith.

  171. By 49erHarleyRider on May 18, 2011 | Reply

As I said yesterday, a team can do well with a crappy QB. Look at the Bears, for example. If the QB has a rating that Smith has had and they still lose, it’s more than the QB. If they change out the coaching staff and still lose…it’s more than the QB and coaching staff…if they draft a solid O Line and still lose…you get my point.

A football team is a package deal. The team does not have to be perfect at every position, but it cannot be weak in so many. Alex Smith is no the fault nor is he the only constant in the last decade (almost) of losing seasons. In fact, i recall that their losing streak stared before he was done with college in Utah. I’m sure the ’03 and ’04 seasons weren’t his fault.

What we need is to strengthen the offensive coaching (which we probably have with this move) and defensive backs. The lock-out is hurting us far more than Alex Smith ever has.

Smith has been with us for 6 seasons and was coached by 5 different coordinators. Its hard to have to start over that many times, the decent season he had was when Norv Turner was OC. Now what does that tell you…, most of the blame is on the front office, for not being able to keep a Coordinator! Smith would, and will thrive in the West Coast system. I say, bring back Smith! And for those of you who can’t see that…, stick to your beer, bowl of chips and the couch, let the real ballers play!

First of all, does anyone in know how to spell in here? Alex does have all of the physical tools to play quarterback in the NFL. However, after all the film I have seen, I do not think he has the mental speed to play the position. Maybe, just maybe Jim Harbaugh can help him in that department. Now that we have drafted a quarterback to be the future (fingers crossed) Alex is the best option for us as appose to getting a free agent and spending too much money. He is the best option for our team at this time. Do I like Alex? Maybe a little. Lets just hope he is better next year than last. A bigger concern for me is our head coach. Everyone has already anointed him the savior of the franchise. Has everyone forgot that most college coaches do not do well in the pros? Not saying that I don’t like him, just saying I really liked the Idea of Gruden coming back to the bay. I really think you get us turned around Mr. Harbaugh!!!! Gooooooo Niniersssssssss!!!!!!!!!

HI again so now its the corners getting the blame for Alex’s short comings. I as well watched those all the games and if u watch not only football but know anything about football….its a game of athletes and strategy. That being said…yes the corners got torched after 4 …3 and out series, or not doing anything for 2 quarters. The defense can only be on the field so long before they get a little winded and if u dont run the game as your suposed to and give the defense some rest they wont be fresh …so 4 or 5 series of 3 and outs as we have all seen means the defense is out there for the other teams 4 or 5 series where the quarterback actually moves the ball down the field. So yeah they will get burnt when the Alex cant drive the ball for more than 3 plays. I’m sure Alex is a great guy and yes Harbaugh has said Alex should be able to do it …..but so have so many other former coaches.

Like most 49ers fans, over the past 6 years Ive become frustrated with Alex Smith’s inability to create plays. My hopes were high when he guided the 49ers to tie the Game against New Orleans Saints on the second Monday Night football game of the year in the final 2 minutes. I saw potential in him as a scrambling QB. His ability to scramble really opened doors for the receivers. Then, as the season went along, and games lost, I didn’t see any more scrambling. Its like he was scared to get hit or the coach didn’t want him to run but rather stay in the pocket. It is pretty difficult to run an offense when your offense is prediictable. Every defense was stacking the box against the 49ers. Additionally, Alex Smith throughout his career has had a defensive minded coach. Im not making an excuse for him but somehow I think Jim Harbough can resurrect his career and help him blossom into the #1 pick the niners choose in the draft. As 49ers fans, lets give him one more chance to prove his worth.

Wasn’t Bradford a rookie last year with a new system and guys he never played with. Yes and in his first year allmost took his team to the playoffs. Sanchez took his team to the AFC chamionship in his first year adn did it again the following year. I saw the Lions improve with a former 49er Q.B. I have been a 49er fan since I was 3 and am now 28. I didn’t like Young and I still didn’t when he won a Super Bowl, Thanks to the defense for getting us to that Super Bowl. Norv is ngone so stop bringing him up. Mike McCarthy said he left because they drafted Smith in fact he told the 9ers to draft Aaron Rodgers. I hate being called a traitor because I won’t support Alex but give me a reason to. He allways plays good enough to keep his job and that is it. I will say one good thing about him. He’s better then O’sullivan. If they resign him I will cheer for a different team this season like a lot of you pretend 9er fans are telling us to do that don’t like Alex. It’s not as easy as saying “lets just get another QB and we’ll be good” Good QBs dont grow on trees and there arent any answers out there anyways. The 49ers will stuggle this season because of the lockout. Alex Smith will struggle. Training camp is important especially with a new system being implemented. I love how excited everyone is about Harbaugh but he will struggle in year 1. He may be a good coach but the NFL is full of “great coaches. SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco’s newly minted general manager, former scout Trent Baalke, asked the NFL head office for clarification on a point of order Monday over whether the team is required to exchange its draft picks for a football player. “Our roster has plenty of guys on it, so I believe the franchise should look to address other needs through the draft, like for instance we don’t have a trampoline or a pontoon boat,” said Baalke, who said he would consider trading the seventh pick in the first round to any team who could offer him a set of beanbag chairs. “If we have to get an athlete, I’m thinking maybe a power forward. We don’t have one of those right now.” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to deny the request, saying the last time he allowed San Francisco to use a draft pick for non-football player purposes they wasted them on Utah’s Alex Smith

Relax, he’s been through 3 different offinsive co-ordinators in 3 years. The niners should be a run first offense. Singletary was lost offensively. Harbaugh will run the offensive at lot better. Although Smith had a lot of rough games he is capable of delivering the ball. he needs protection. He needs to get out of the pocket to have any sucess considering the way the front line gave up a few times on him last season. Sacks aren’t always the QB’s fault. Make him earn it in camp. until someone else comes were stuck. not a fan of Troy Smith GO BLUE.

Lets face it we need him. David Carr is a 3rd depth QB and Kaepernick is in the molding, we dont want to rush him and have another QB debacle. Also in his 6 years Alex played he had 4 different coaches that were all defensive minded(side note mike martz (OC) didnt work with alex’s abilities, too much long ball). Step in Harbaugh and he sees something he can probably use or develope. give him a chance lets see if its all hype or if he is the savior coach. On top of that we are locked out, no point in a free agent because they wont even practice and we cant even sign one!!! so kudos to Harbaugh for making the smart move and sticking with smith

Who else are the Niners gonna start at QB?

Smith knows the players on this offense, he’s built up some chemistry with them and if they brought in a veteran to be the next QB, that person would need a FULL offseason and training camp build up that chemistry and timing. With the lockout in place, there is no offseason for the coaches and players to have formal workouts.

The rookie is not ready…if he were ready to be a starter, then he would have been drafted by another team in the first round and would not have been there for the Niners in the second round. Kap needs to learn the NFL and sitting on the sidelines for a year or 2 is the best way to do it. Look at Rodgers in Green Bay…he sat for a few years and is now a pretty damn good QB.

Smith can keep the QB spot warm for Kap and then when Kap is ready, the job will be his.

I think that Smith is a great QB I just dont think he had the option to be great. I love the 49ers but we need to protect our QB or of course he will get hurt and not do good. Also we need to have him work with one solid person for more then 6 months to a year. I think that if he comes back it will be good to have him with a good front line and a great coach. Go ahead Smith prove them all wrong and show them what you can really do. Bring the 49ers to a victory just like you did here in Utah.

I would like to comment on Alex Smith. While I don’t think much of him what else are we going to do this year? JH has been buttering him up because there is no other decent choice (due to the lockout). Do you really think JH would say Alex sucks but we will take him back anyway? JH is trying to make the best of a bad situation. You don’t really want him starting Carr? If I ran the 49ers I would cut Carr even if I didn’t have any other QB. For the Nate Davis lovers out there, he was recently cut by the Seachickens so they didn’t like him either. For you Kolb lovers out there he doesn’t look much better than Alex. In fact without Alex’s stupid fumble in the Eagles game the 49ers would have won.

Let me remind everyone who says that we should give him a chance under JH….we have given him multiple new chances under multiple HCs and the fact still remains that the head coach is not on the field, the head coach can not read the defense for him and tell him who to throw to and who is open, and the head coach can not provide leadership on the field during the game. the fact still remains ’05 – 1 TD 11 INT ’06 16 TD 16 INT ’07 2 TD 4 INT ’09 18 TD 12 INT ’10 14 TD 10 INT for a grand total of 51 TD and 53 INT. Those are cleveland browns statistics not acceptable for 49ers.

I always thought football was a team sport…. how about no O-line for the first few years, or no real threat at wide receiver, or how about the same predictable dumb calls week after week. So let’s just blame it all on Alex, WOW, my son has more sense and he is only 12. Alex has potential, and will be a good QB under the right Head Coach, and I think we finally found one in Jim Harbaugh.

every year we hear the same thing; he’s got new coaching, this staff will make him a good qb, he will be better now that so and so is gone. at the end of every season it’s the same thing; he had bad coaching, he had a new OC again, blah, blah. it’s true it’s not all alexs’ fault, but some of it is. he should have learned some things just from 6 years of experience. he’s not very good at reading defenses, not very good at avoiding the blitzer, not very good at finding the open guy and not that accurate past 10 yards. he’s good at the 3 yard check down which explains his completion percentage. some of these things can’t be coached, some of them are raw talent. it’s not like it’s been a completely new system every year either and if he’s as smart as some of you say he is, he should have grasped some of it by now.

Ive watched Alex’s career since he started, with all the crappy coaching what do you expect to happen. Harbaugh has watched the film as I have watched him play. Theres alot of hope there, Alex is a good QB when he’s put in good situations with good play calling as are a lot of good QB’s. He has Harbaugh’s trust and that is going try give him the confidence he hasnt had because the other coaches hav never beleived in him they rather run the ball and get a loss of yards then put the blame on Alex when no one is open on a 3rd and long and he is sacked cause the offensive line sucks and can’t block anybody. He is gonna blow us away this season when he plays like the number 1 pick he was.

look do i think he can get the 9ers to the promise land no, but in all respect to smith he has had like what 6 different coaches all with different systems and when smith has ran a fast paced offense which harbaugh is going to run. maybe they r betting on him busting and trying to get luck in next years draft never happen but maybe. fact is the 9ers were a good team as long as the defense can rest we had the saints, falcons, and vikings beat that right there wins the division. his biggest problem is that he stares down his receivers to much.

Alex Smith isn’t often mentioned in the same breath as Peyton Manning or Philip Rivers. But when it comes to throwing to his favorite target, tight end Vernon Davis, Smith is at least in the neighborhood of the NFL’s elite.

Alex Smith to Vernon Davis, 114.3
    2010 (11 games): 40 of 64, 588 yards, 6 TD, 0 INT (124.0)
    2009 (11 games): 55 of 87, 697 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT (107.3)
    Total (22 games): 95 of 151, 1,285 yards, 16 TD, 4 INT (114.3)
    Smith’s overall QB rating since 2009: 81.8

the reason Alex Smith might not be performing at his greatest potential is because of all the people who boo him and show him no support. No quarterback would do well with the way you guys treat him. A different coordinator every year, which means a new playbook every year, and not much support…sounds like a winning recipe. If you guys want to set the team back 3-4 more years then keep pleading for a new quarterback but if you want results this year than stick with who we have. Last time i checked the San Francisco 49ers were an NFL football team which means they win as a team and they lose as a team…Not one player can carry a team to a Super Bowl victory. Sure he has lived up to his potential, but what’s to say he cant lend us a hand in molding our true QB. Kap isnt ready, not for long shot. Let Smith come in and get us through this season, which is pretty much going to be a wash since the lockout has almost but killed the off season and any legit opportunity of training our draft picks. The Atalanta game …come on really your trying to reserect his career off of the atlanta game. Bad form his performance was huh well its called being a QB to score during a game. Funny how when he scores 2 touchdowns people seem to think he did awsome. Thats something all QB’s have to do to win it ‘s not a huge deal. A awsome QB is the one who when the chips are down he can rally back and win the game with his skill. Just goes to show ya how bad he is. A QB should be able to run a good 8-14 series in a game at least and score at least 2 TD’s… of course Defenses get paid too… And things happen but not in every game. Just based on his interceptions he should be let go. Joking aside he should go and hopefully find a team with a spread offense wich is better for him than west coast under center… it apears thats not his specialty

Really 42% lol come on people that shoulde be at like 15% or lower. Do you watch the games ..I mean watch them …yes some bad plays were called over the years quite a few of em but really. When he is missing wide open guys for TD’s and not reading the blitz and then throwing a int because of the pressure thats on him as a QB to dump to hot reciever or throw out of bounds if the pretection is not sliding towards the blitz basic stuff that he cant do because he cant perform at this level of the game. Not saying i could…but i would like to think if I was picked #1 overall and 6 years later i am still complaining about the protection and coaches i would hope someone would slap me and cut me so i could go and persue other avenues of work.

Folks, Harbaugh is going to make a competition out of the QB job. Only problem with that is that Alex has won that competition every year.. because we have had no other QB worth even a penny. I’m sorry just because he’s the best we have, doesn’t mean he starts or needs to stay. You can’t blame the o-line for his inaccuracy, for his inconsistant play. He is not a good QB period. Six years is plenty to realize that he is not going to get better, He needed a veteran to sit behind for several years to mature him. It didn’t happen and this is what we have had to deal with. I would have rather picked up a QB in free agency, there are several better that him out there… Sit the just Drafted QB behind any one of the veterans that are free to pick up.. ( Not Alex ) dump Alex and move on. He is not consistant enough for the NFL. Again, just because he’s the best we have had, shouldnt make us have to be stuck with a less than mediocre QB. You won’t win in the NFL with a mediocre QB period

Bringing Alex Smith back is not and was not the issue. When will the niners finally start being more committed to bringing in the best coaching staff?? We had some of the best, Norv turner and MIke McCarthy. Under Norv, Gore had the best year in his career. LT = Hall of Fame. Mike McCarthy turned Rodgers into a Super Bowl quarterback. He played in the spread much like Alex did in College. The real question is, can this group of coaches make us a legitimate playoff team? Teams have reached Superbowls with a nobody at quarterback. Just to name a few: Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, REX GROSSMAN, Jake Delhomme.

I feel there is alot more emphasis on the coaching staff. I wonder how much of it is the doing of Eddie D. since he’s back with the organization as a “consultant”. I hope they dont ship Harbaugh out if he has 1 or 2 bad seasons. Thats what got us into trouble in the first place.

  268. By cutty302007 on May 28, 2011 | Reply

I don’t know why you all are crying about Alex Smith. Saying that another season is gone is just not right. Why all of you are Boo Whoin about Alex Smith coming back understand that the head coach asked for him to come back. Arron Rodgers sat on the bench behind Brett Favre and learned the offense from him. Alex Smith had to go through 6 different offensive coordinators. Arron Rodgers had only 1 offense to learn. if Alex Smith was given the oppurtunity like Arron Rodgers to learn from a future Hall of Famer then you all wouldn’t be talking like this. I believe that Alex may end up being a better West Coast QB than all of these other rooty tooty offenses that he has tried to learn. Give the head coach a chance to coach him up. Not Dennis Erickson, not Mike Nolan, nor Mike Singletary had any knowlegde of how to develop a QB. I truly believe that when Alex Smith is given the chance to lead our team onto the field again this time he will lead us to the playoffs and all of you doubters will eat crow and say that you all shouldn’t have been so hard on Alex Smith. Just give the coach the chance to prove that he knows talent and that we do have a winner in Alex Smith.

  269. By ben on May 28, 2011 | Reply

this coaching staff sounds like they know what they are talking about. A good coach is gonna build the offense around the most important position and thats the quarterback. If Harbaugh thinks that Alex is our best option in this lockout plauged season than you have to believe coach knows best, and if not than we are doomed know matter who are quarterback is. Walsh had a system called “West Coast Offence”; he drafted a quarterback that fit into his offense. Harbaugh has his system so if thats his system and he thinks alex can fit it than so be it. Sure if this was fantasy football I’m sure he’d pick Brady or Payton but it’s not so he can’t’ He has to work with what he has. Time will tell if he thinks there are better opions are available, but until the lockout is over and free angency is available he’s doing what he is supposed to, working with what he has, that is gonna produce the best results. A lot of people( if they studied football) know that harbaugh, by bringing smith back just made a VERY smart move. If the lockout isnt over until a week before, or even after the season is set to begin, than your gonna want somebody who knows this team and has a relationship with all of the players. For that reason and that reason alone Harbaugh gets a 10 in the football smarts department!

To all who thinks Alex Smith has a chance, probably is blind, a fool, no talent what so ever to judge talent, does not know football or from outer space.

I have been saying in a few sites now, fire Harbaugh asap for another year of agony and heartache by naming Smith as his starter. It tells me he is not as good as advertised. Am I watching a different game than those who think Smith will be okay. Have the recent niners lull you young pants on the ground kids to mediocrity. Don’t let the name fool you. I’m a die hard but just sick and tired of what i’m seeing. It reminds me the the Warriors with Cohan and current owners (that’s another story). I have been spoiled by Eddie D.

Smith simply can’t play. The most inaccurate qb I have seen at ANY level. He couldn’t hit a stationary elephant 10 yards away, pees on his pants when pocket closes, kills drives at the most critical moment by misfiring, fumbling, interception, you name it. If you can’t play, you can’t play, no matter who your coordinator. You blind so called fans can make excuses for him such as no line, coordinator(wrong! Martz, a respected guru) the weather, the sun or whatever, WAKE UP!

we kept the wrong smith alex is not the one we should of kept troy smith knew how to win games and that is all i have to say about that. As far as is attitude problem yes he had one, but anyone who would bow up to singltary is a man(especially when singletary would snap him like a twig)
