Path to the Draft: Pac-10 Week

Posted by Taylor Price on April 4, 2011 – 11:12 AM

Our 2011 pre-draft coverage shifts to familiar territory this week – the Pac-10. The 49ers Faithful are more than familiar with the conference because of its proximity and the same goes for the team’s coaching staff.

With Jim Harbaugh leaving Stanford for the 49ers, he’s easily the most informed coach in the NFL when it comes to the famous West Coast conference.

Harbaugh’s staff is also well-versed in the prominent players from the Pac-10. Both offensive and defensive coordinators Greg Roman and Vic Fangio are coming from his Cardinal staff. Other examples of familiarity include wide receivers coach Johnny Morton and tight ends coach Reggie Davis. They’re coming from the USC and Oregon State coaching staffs respectively.

The 49ers selected two Pac-10 players last season, safety Taylor Mays (USC) and wide receiver Kyle Williams (Arizona State) in the second and sixth rounds respectively. And once again, the conference features several high-profile prospects that will surely entice NFL clubs.

Which players have a chance to be selected by the 49ers?

I just want to get a solid CB to play with Taylor Mays and Dashon. Solid play will elevate their game. Also, it’s good to have a competent coaching staff.

I think bringing back Alex Smith would be a good move, even if not a starter. He deserves another chance with steady coaching to see if he can progress into a 1st round choice quarterback he has shown to have the skill for.

I think defense is the way to go this year. We need a great CB and another tough defensive lineman, to help move the 49er run defense back where it was a few years ago.

I would think about these gentlemen for this years draft choices.

1st Round: Trade Down from 7 to 20-25th 1st round: and another 2nd round pick: Jimmy Smith – This guy is a monster on the bench (24reps), ran a quick time for one of the largest CB’s in this years draft at 6’2″.

2nd Round: Stephen Paea ; DT from Oregon, he set the record for 49 reps, and has the attitude to succeed.

2nd Round or 3rd if needed: Rodney Hudson or Stefen Wisniewski. One of these young men could be the answer to our gap in young healty backup to full time player at this position.

    Just my 2cents worth
