Live Game Blog: 49ers vs. Cardinals

Posted by Scott Kegley on January 2, 2011 – 11:11 AM

It’s Fan Appreciation Day at Candlestick Park for the 49ers final contest of the season.  Both the 49ers and Cardinals are 5-10 and the winner will finish third in the NFC West.  It’s been a busy week for the 49ers as Mike Singletary was let go after the team returned from a loss in St. Louis.  Jim Tomsula was named interim head coach and addressed the media on Monday.  Enthusiasm for his job is definitely not an issue for Tomsula, a former head coach in NFL Europa.

Inactives:

49ers
– 3rd QB David Carr, CB Will James, CB Phillip Adams, LB Patrick Willis, LB Keaton Kristick, DT Will Tukuafu, T Joe Staley and TE Nate Byham.

Cardinals - 3rd QB Derek Anderson, CB A.J. Jefferson, CB Marshay Green, RB LaRod Stephens-Howling, LB Gerald Hayes, LB Joey Porter, C Ben Claxton and TE Ben Patrick
Stay tuned to this blog for more updates throughout the game.

FIRST QUARTER:

Andre Roberts fielded the kick for the Cardinals and took it out to the 22.  Takeo Spikes read the run by Tim Hightower on first down, hit the gap and stopped him after a gain of 3.  Skelton completed to Roberts as spikes came on the blitz on second down, but Bowman was there to stop him for a short gain.  On 3rd and 4, the Cardinals were called for a false start.  On 3rd and 9, Lawson and Spencer met at the quarterback.  Lawson came up the middles as Spencer blitzed from the left side to drop Skelton for the sack.  Ginn bobbled the punt, but was able to recover at the 40.

After being stopped for no gain of first down, Westbrook picked up 5 on second down.  Anthony Davis got into a shoving match with Dockett after the play.  On 3rd and 5, Smith hit Ginn who couldn’t get back up field and was stopped just short of the first down marker.  Lee’s punt was fair caught at the 12.

Hightower got the ball on 1st and 2nd down and picked up 6 yards total.  Out of the shotgun on 3rd down, the 49ers only rushed three and Skelton’s pass was too high and incomplete. Graham’s punt was short and rolled to the SF 44.

Smith was under heavy pressure on first down, but got the ball to Davis on the screen.  Davis gained 17 yards down the left sideline.  On 3rd down, Smith hit Crabtree crossing, but Wilson made a good play to make the tackle at the 34.  Just outside of field goal range, Tomsula sent in Lee to punt.  Spillman made a great play to prevent the punt from going into the end zone and it was downed at the 1 by Bowman.  Whisenhunt challenged the call that Spillman was not in the end zone when he touched the ball.  The officials overturned the call and said it was a touchback.

On 1st down, the right tackle was called for a false start.  On the next play, Smith threw down Skelton for a sack back at the 6.  Wells got the carry on second down and gained only a couple to set up a 3rd down and 20.  Skelton tried to hit his running back out of the backfield on 3rd down, but the pass was high as the 49ers came with a blitz.  The punt rolled out of bounds at the AZ 47.  The Cards were called for holding on the punt, giving the 49ers 10 yards after the kick.

On the first play of the drive, Smith threw a beautiful ball for Ted Ginn in the front right corner of the end zone for a 37-yard touchdown.  The ball was perfectly throw as Ginn didn’t have a whole lot of room in between two defenders.

49ers 7 – Cardinals 0

The 49ers continued to get good pressure on Skelton as Goldson blitzed and dropped him for an 8-yard loss on first down.  On 3rd and 19, Lawson chanced Skelton out of the pocket and all the QB could do was throw it away. The punt rolled out of bounds at the 43.

On 1st down, Smith was dropped for a sack at the 38.  The 49ers made up for it on the next play as Smith hit Walker on a slant and a first down inside Arizona territory.  Smith started the game 6 of 6 passing as he hit Morgan against man coverage for a gain of 32 down the right sideline.  On 1st down, Smith tried to hit…Adam Snyder…but the ball was a bit too high.  What a way to end the first quarter!  Snyder got high fives from Tomsula as he headed to the bench.

Standout Stat: Arizona has -14 total yards of offense.  They have no first downs in the first quarter.

Highlight Reel: The touchdown pass to Ginn was perfectly thrown by Smith, who has started the game 6 of 7 passing for 110 yards and a QB rating of 158.3.

Put it in Perspective: The 49ers are outplaying the Cardinals in every phase of the game. It looks like the 49ers game plan was to pressure the rookie quarterback as they’ve already sacked Skelton three times.  Smith has played a perfect game thus far, making several explosive plays down the field.

SECOND QUARTER:

On 3rd down, Smith was sacked by Dockett.  Reed connected on a 39-yard field to give the 49ers a two-score lead.

49ers 10 – Cardinals 0

Arizona got their first 1st down of the game on a quick pass to Fitzgerald up the right sideline.  Skelton scrambled for a gain of 6 on 2nd down.  On 3rd and 5, Skelton hit Hightower on a screen, but the rookie Bowman was right there to drop him for a loss of 4.  Ginn called for a fair catch at the 5.

Dixon got the carry on 1st down, Westbrook on 2nd to set up a 3rd and 4.  On 3rd down, Smith tried to hit Westbrook on an out route, but the ball was too high.  Lee’s punt was short and took a bad bounce back to their own 37 to give Arizona great field position.

Wells had a good run on first down, getting some blocks to get around the left edge and pick up 7.  The cards tried a flea flicker on 2nd down, but Clements made a great break on the ball to knock it away.  On 3rd and 3, Skelton hit Max Komar on the left sideline for a gain of 8.  On 3rd and 8, Skelton hit Fitzgerald with two defenders guarding him to get the first down.  Tomsula challenged the ruling that Fitz got both feet in bounds.  The play was upheld and on the next play, Skelton hit Fitzgerald on a skinny post for a touchdown.

49ers 10 – Cardinals 7

Ginn returned the kickoff to the 19. On 1st down, Smith hit Crabtree down the right sideline on a comeback for a gain of 12.  On 3rd and 3, Smith tried to hit Delanie Walker on an out route.  The ball was well thrown, but Walker had it bounce right off his hands.  Spillman had great coverage to drop Roberts right as he fielded the punt. Spillman was also blocked in the back so the Cardinals will start their drive at the 9.

On 2nd down, Skelton had tons of time to throw and hit Fitz for a gain of 14.  On the next play, Hightower had some running room to the right side and picked up 10. Hightower had another nice run on the next play, getting around the left edge this time for 9. on 3rd and 1, Hightower gained 3 yards on the carry up the middle to move the sticks. On the next play, Lawson flew around the right side of the line to drop Hightower for a loss of 3.  On 3rd and 13, Skelton hit Hightower underneath short of the first down and Tomsula called timeout with 1:48 left in the half. Ginn signaled for a fair catch at the 18.

Ginn was called for a false start before the first play.  On 1st down, Smith tried to hit Ginn on a go route down the middle but Lenon made a good play to bat it down.  On 2nd down, Westbrook got the carry up the middle and picked up 9 as Whisenhunt called timeout.  On 3rd and 6, Westbrook got the carry again and got the first down thanks to several broken tackles.  On the next play, Smith hit Morgan who turned up field and got out of bounds at the AZ 43.  Smith took a shot in the end zone for Morgan, who must not have saw it until very late as the ball looked catchable. Adrian Wilson threw down Westbrook by the helmet and he stayed on the ground for a while.  he was able to get up and walk to the sideline on his own power.  Dixon got the carry on 3rd down and the 49ers let the clock run out on the half.

Standout Stat: Smith is 9 of 15 passing for 152 yards and one touchdown for a QB rating of 116.5.

Highlight Reel: The Cardinals could have gotten the ball back with some time left in the half, but Westbrook spun to break one tackle and lowered his shoulder to move the chains.

Put it in Perspective: The 49ers could have used some points on the final drive of the half, but they will get the ball to start the second half.  After 3 sacks in the first quarter, the 49ers didn’t blitz as much in the second quarter as Skelton started to have more time and eventually developed a rhythm with Larry Fitzgerald.  For as well as the 49ers played in the first quarter, they must be disappointed to lead by just three at the half.

THIRD QUARTER:

Ginn returned the kickoff to the 25. On 3rd and 8, Smith hit Westbrook out of the backfield who got some revenge against Wilson as he broke the tackle to pick up the first down.  Two plays later, Smith hit Davis over the middle.  Davis broke it out to the right side and outran Wilson for a 59-yard touchdown.

49ers 17 – Cardinals 7

Roberts returned the kick to the 35.  Skelton’s third down pass was too high for Hightower and the Cardinals will punt.  The punt bounced in front of Ginn and rolled out of bounds at the 22.

The Cards were called for a false start as Smith took a shot deep but incomplete intended for Crabtree.  Crabtree drew a holding call on the next play to give the 49ers a first down by way of two penalties.  On 1st down, Dixon had some running room up the middle for a gain of 8.  Westbrook then had some room up the right side thanks to some great blocks by the line to spring him for a gain of 30.  On 2nd and 6, Smith made a play with his feet to escape pressure to the left side and throw it against his body to Davis for 20 yards.  On 2nd down, Wetsbrook tripped up at the line of scrimmage, but was not touched until he dove forward for the end zone.

49ers 24 – Cardinals 7

Roberts returned the kick to the 27.  On 2nd down, Skelton hit Fitzgerald on a comeback to move the chains.  Two plays later, Skelton’s pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage by Ray McDonald and picked off by Ahmad Brooks who returned it to the 8.

On 2nd and goal, Westbrook to it on from 6 yards out for his second touchdown of the game.

49ers 31 – Cardinals 7

Roberts returned the kick to the 30.  On 1st down, Skelton hit Breaston to the right side for a gain of 5.  On 3rd and 3, Skelton hit Roberts who got some separation against Clements to the right side for a first down.  On 3rd and 10, Skelton tried to scramble but was stopped by Smith and Haralson after a gain of just three.  The Cardinals downed the kick at the 1, but the man who touched it ran out of bounds, resulting in a touchback.

On 3rd down, Smith tried to hit Crabtree crossing, but the coverage was good and the pass was incomplete.  Lee got off his best punt of the day as Roberts was stopped at the 24.  It was a 60-yard punt.  It was called back though after a penalty by Bowman.  On the second punt, Roberts returned the kick to the 40.

***Richard Bartel came in at quarterback for his first-ever NFL snap***

On 2nd down, Bartel didn’t have anyone open, but was somehow able to get it away to avoid the sack by Brooks. On 3rd and 2, Bartel lobbed it deep for Fitzgerald…who’s pretty good…and he snatched it in between two defenders for a big gain.  On the next play, Bartel hit Fitzgerald again and he got down to the goal line.  On the next play, Clements was one-on-one and made a great play to knock away the fade pass to Fitzgerald.  On 2nd down, McDonald got into the backfield to drop Hightower for a loss. That’s the last play of the third quarter.

Standout Stat: The 49ers have 333 yards of offense while the Cardinals have just 164.

Highlight Reel: Davis outran the Cardinals secondary for a 59-yard score that set the tone for the half.

Put it in Perspective: The 49ers look like they will get their fourth straight win over the Cardinals.  They’ve played well in every phase of the game and interim head coach Jim Tomsula should be able to go 1-0.  The 49ers are also taking advantage of the lead, giving more reps to the younger players like Brock, Boone and Mays.

FOURTH QUARTER:

On 4th and goal, Bartel tried to hit Fitzgerald at the goal line, but Brown made a good play to knock it away – turnover on downs.

The 49ers got a little room to work thanks to and offside call against the Cardinals.  On 2nd down, Smith took a shot deep for Davis, but Wilson had pretty good coverage.  Smith’s third down pass was just out of the reach of Ginn. Roberts fielded the kick around midfield.

On 3rd and 2, Bartel’s pass for Fitzgerald was too wide. Roberts was wide open on 4th down, but Bartel’s pass was nowhere close.

On 2nd down, Smith hit Crabtree down crossing to the right for a gain of 18.  Two plays later, Smith was hit as he threw for Crabtree who made a nice leaping grab for a first down despite pass interference.  On 3rd and 14, Smith tried to hit Crabtree in the end zone, but the pass sailed a bit too long. The punt was downed by Brian Jennings at the 7.

Bartel picked up a first down on a nice pass and catch to Breaston up the right sideline as the Cards go to the hurry up.  On 3rd down, Wright got the handoff on the draw and picked up another first down.

We have to go down to the field now, but we’ll update the final score on Twitter.

Come on 49ers, we need a LOSS! Getting a high draft pick in every round, and our needed QB and CB are more important than an ego boost in a meaningless game.

I agree, sacrifice one more and get some good draft picks for next year.

I do not like rooting against a win, but it is the smart thing to do. I hope you play well but lose the game as it will give our team a higher Draft Pick. A win today means nothing and it certainly would not carry over to next season. Lets get some better picks.

Only problem with that is Yorks would never ask one of the old 49ers greats like Steve , they want to build their own legacy. However I don’t even think they can get a solid GM nor a head coach.Ohwell this will be their 4th try.

Steve & David you guys are so negative about our team, you should go join the Raiders, we don’t need negative fans!

  15. By UpLateAgain on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

But for mental errors, the Niners would have likely been 9-7 or 10-6 this year. The talent is there. The focus has not been. Too bad York couldn’t get along with Mooch. He steadily, incrementally, improved the team to playoff caliber while he was there….and with less basic talent than they have now, because he played the team to the players’ abilities rather than trying to get the players to mold themselves to some preconceived idea…. and the mistakes/ mental errors/ brain farts/ and incompetencies were all minimized as a result.

Sing tried to turn the Niners into the ’86 Bears, but the defensive secondary talent isn’t as good and the Niners don’t have Walter Payton. We didn’t play to our strengths. Our tight ends should have been thrown-to six times as often as they were. Instead we had one of the most lack-luster offenses in football, with an average defense, where one that completely shuts folks down is needed to go along with that kind of offense.

And four out of five times when we’d break a big play, it would get called back because someone blocked in the back, took a cheap shot, or grabbed a face mask. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

How many times did we false start this year? Had to be record setting! There is no excuse for doing that as consistently as we did. That…. is all about coaching.

First round draft picks really don’t mean a whole heck of a lot. Look at Smith! There’s many successful teams right now that aren’t all 100% high draft picks. Lets win the game.

People that say he can’t play don’t understand the game, that’s all that is–Hands down, and they are agngry that we have a losing team and try and blame him. But if you honestly look at and can be objective andlook at the circumstances (COACHING) or lack there of it that’s the issue, it’s not him nor is it the TEAM, PERIOD.

  26. By dyoshi49 on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

i am and still believe in Alex. He’s too smart to let go………all he needs is a smart o/c to go with his talent.

  27. By Chris on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Your right KDB it is the lack of coaching that is to blame for Alex’s poor development. But the first two seasons he was in the league he had no talent around him and in this day in age if your a QB and you are not in the playoffs one of your first two years your done. With the fans, the analyst and the coach.

  28. By KDB on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Chris–I agree and yes it’s sad to have some fans Blame, Blame, Blame that don’t understand, but hey-they have a right.

For all of you tools who think we should win because the good of the game or whatever you face painters think, let’s think about this for real. I think all of you agree that we need a lot of help , so what better way than to do it threw the draft. If we would have lost this game we would have moved up to 4th or 5th pick VS 10th or 11th pick.People that is a huge huge difernece. It’s all about the future not this season, but once again all of that body paint must have gotten to your brains!!!! Go root for the Raiders!!!!!!!

I too think Gruden would be a fit for the niners. I think a lot of that may depend on the GM…word is that York is going to go with Baalke. If Gruden isn’t HC, I would like to see SD fire Norv and bring him back as O.C. I would not like to see him as the HC though.

Panthers are also a possablity, but I’m thinkin they’ll give Clausen more time or even go back to Matt Moore, never know with the coaching changes, teams might go in a different direction. You think Alex Smith is the problem because he’s been sooo erratic, what about the rest of the team. All the penalties and dropped balls and the O-line allowing so many sacks or hits on the QB. When Alex Smith has time, he usually does great. And the defense hasn’t been great either. From one of the best defenses in 09 to one of the worst in 2010. All you guys talk trash about Alex Smith think drafting another first round quarterback is gonna change things next year? What a bunch of morons! I’ve been watching the Niners for 36 years now and I remember when they drafted Montana. They sucked before that. Things will eventually turn around but they do not happen overnight. The Ravens won a superbowl with a 10th string quarterback in Dilfer but had an outstanding defense. If the Niners defense played up to their potential, the Niners WOULD be in the playoffs. And for all of you IDIOTS who wanted the Niners to lose to move up in the draft, you should really look at changing teams to root for.

Oh yeah, one more thing to the IDIOTS who type their whole post in caps. Get a life.

If we keep Alex Smith, then we better be running a spread offense next season. We better bring back the West Coast offense next season. Our offensive linemen BETTER stop eating all that steak, pork, and Panda Express and get in shape so that they won’t keep getting hurt year after year. Our DBs better start playing with FOCUS. And our coaches better start communicating much better with Jed York so they can map out a REAL PLAN FOR THE FUTURE.

I’m sick and tired of MEDIOCRITY. It’s not in my blood. I’ve been a Lakers fan for over 30 years and a Niners fan for the same amount of time. That’s 15 championships in 30 years for both of my NFL and NBA teams that I’ve witnessed personally. I have a 50% win percentage when it comes to titles. The fact that the Niners have not fielded a Super Bowl caliber team since 1998 is simply UNACCEPTABLE. Period.

Happy New Year to the Faithful and the Niners organization. Y’all BETTER BRING IT next year!!

there is only one qb worth a high pick and he will be gone by 7 (andrew luck). Oh and it doesnt matter who throws the ball if our recievers cant win match ups oh and how many people saw crabtree stop running on a go when the defense jumped offsides and smith did the right thing and took a shot down field. WTF the more I watch this guy the more I think he is a bust. Yea he shows that he has some talent and makes some good catches but right now he is no where near a number one reciever. Look at all of the recievers in the league and tell me what true number 1 recievers on teams that crabtree is better than. Thats right there are none he isnt even in the conversation with Johnson, Fitzgerald, Welker, Holmes, Wallace, etc sh!t he isnt even as good as mike williams who hadnt played in 3 yrs. Yea alex isnt the best but lets evaluate everyone.

When I started watching the 9ers back in 79, through out the years they had their up’s and down’s, back in 89 I think they only lost 2 games, they were awesome. I fill the same about Alex, when he first started he really was not that good, I think he has matured as a QB, he is not their yet, but will be. Hopefully with the right coaching staff he will get to a place of excellance. I believe that Alex Smith could take us to the Superbowl. But the offence and defence need to improve also. This season we had some very close games, to many penalties, a lot of bad calls from the referee’s. bad coaching calls, if Alex would have started in the Rams game, we would be in the playoffs today. I am not going to stress out over a young49er team that is in it’s building stage. We need to look at next season. We all know who we want, but it is not our decision, the descision comes from the top. Alex will start next season and will be much better. We have a great team, they are getting better and will be better this next season with the right coaching staff. See you all next season. Go San Fransisco 49ers, let’s do it next season*******

Justin you must be smokin cr@ck, Troy couldn’t throw for jack that’s why he was replace by Alex again during the Rams game. He’s clearly not the future. His attitude with the coach lost my respect for him. (T.O. anyone?) We don’t need big mouth players, we need winners.
Draft Locker if possible. I would love Luck but Locker look promising too.
We wouldn’t be having this conversation if Nolan didn’t listen to bad Analyst and draft Smith instead of Rodgers. Rodgers is the real deal people. Nolan is so gullible who didn’t know what he was doing half of the time on the offensive side.

  123. By Jonah on Jan 2, 2011 | Reply

Please don’t talk about Troy Smith anymore. I know that he can scramble but the man can’t throw with a pocket. He instead runs around and gets sacked or throws the ball up in the air. Today what we saw was Alex Smith throwing fine with the O-Line actually blocking. I was very disappointed in Michael Crabtree. I know its the last game of the season but why did you stop when the DB went offsides? It was clearly a GO Route and unless he really is that slow I am starting to regret grabbing Michael Crabtree. I don’t think we will have the draft position to get Locker (Rumors has it that he will stay 1 more year) and even if we draft him we can’t just throw him under fire like Alex Smith. We need a coach that will run Spread like we did today and look how fine it worked. I’d rather have the O-line healthy and blocking right than to waste another draft on a QB who’s career will be ruined because the O-line can’t block or the receivers are too slow. I’m glad we used Ted Ginn to stretch the field. We need Michael to run more post routes and stop having him do Verticals. He’s way too slow. Best Draft Pick of 2010 in order of Best to Worst: Mike Iupati, Anthony Dixon, Navarro Bowman, Taylor Mays, Anthony Davis. We need a true Corner guys, Prince is out there and is ready to be a 49er shutdown corner. Von Miller too anyone?

Too much too late… I’m a Los Angeles 9er fan since I was 8. But I guess I’m not any more, this franchise, management, owners and players have no pride in what the players before you did to make the 49ers the 49ers! You current guys are just trash with no pride in your team and the city it represents! Screw you 9ers! I’m done! I hope LA gets a team soon.

  125. By 49ersTillDeath on Jan 3, 2011 | Reply

Clearly a lot of you have never competed in your entire lives. If a coach ever asked you to go out there and let the guy across from you beat you…you’d tell him to go screw himself. I’m actually happy that Alex had a good game. I honestly can’t imagine many teams wanting to pick him up. He’s got skills but not a whole lot our play calling did to put him (or anyone) in position to be successful…unless we ran the spread O which he did quite well. I don’t think he’s got what it takes right now but those of you sayin trade all the pics for the #1 spot to draft a qb are completely retarded. I say go get Carson Palmer and keep Alex as a #2 and he can learn the Offense. Hire chucky or harbaugh. We need an offensive system in place for YEARS and Manusky can continue to run the D. Draft a corner in the 1st round!

Hey Justin I know you don’t really think that Troy Smith is the future here in San Francisco. Take a look at some numbers 63.2,60.7,51.6,47.8,40.0,36.8 do you know what these numbers are. They are Troy Smith’s comp. pct. per game and yes they are in order and would you like to know what I call that, a defense game planning for you and you not getting it done.

CL33 c’mon man it’s about time you and everyone else get off this Smith and Rodgers comparison. Nobody, not one single person picked Rodgers over Smith in that 2005 draft so stop playing monday morning QB 6yrs to late. Plus I’d love to have seen what Rodgers we would have got had he had to go threw the same situation that we put Alex in.

Alex only plays good games against really bad teams and that is what he did against Az. Yes he played a few decent games at the beginning but no consistantcy. I actually feel really bad for the guy, he has been in a shi__tty situation here a while now maybe thats why “no consistancy here in SF all away around” the fact is the defense is always on the field with all the 3 and outs by offense. secondary is a must need next year and hopefully the young guys can step up and contribute in an impact way

I agree with Colin Cowherd…9ers are a H.C. and Q.B away from winning their division for years to come. We won’t be keeping the coaches we have. Whoever, comes in as H.C….Harbaugh and Gruden mentioned a lot. They will clean house and bring in all their own people. Three team ahead of the 9ers (including Arizona now) that need a QB…Carolina, Buffalo and Arizona. We will not get one the 1st round. A good CB is what we should take!

We need a new H.C. AND QB (we are getting the HC, now we need a QB)!!! If you can’t see that Alex will “never” get us to the promised land, then…I don’t now what to say!!

  131. By KDB on Jan 3, 2011 | Reply

I say we keep Alex hands down and let him compete for the job with another Free Agent and then draft a QB in the 3 to later rounds just like Joe Montana and Tom Brady went 3rd round or later. Don’t draft a QB higher than 3rd round, we don’t need it. We have a fine QB if we had a coach with a system and ANBODY who says different needs to LEARN Football 101, and that’s not disputable from my position, period, not matter what come out of your mouth.
GET A COACH PERIOOOOD do you get it now. My god some of you fans make the Niner Nation look so dumb because you don’t know the game, so QUIT WHINNING and understand that if Tom Brady was here in this system it wouldn’t be happening either. So quit blaming one guy, you are Football IGNORANT if you keep doing that, period, learn the game.
Draft some DB’S and a PAS RUSH PLEASE
We’ll see and yes, I want Harbaugh but I don’t think we can get him, so I’ll gladly take Brian Billick.

And get rid of Carr, Nate I should be selling insurance Davis and Troy smith, they’ve had their 15 minutes.

Until next season boyzzzz have a good one.

  132. By Hermie on Jan 3, 2011 | Reply

KDB, I know we have gone back and forth, but…I think the future will prove Alex will “never” be the man and it will pan out that it is you that do not know football and need Football 101. It is probably because you claim you were a jock and most jocks don’t know how to coach or understand anything of the system…only their own position. Point in hand look at the coaches that haven’t played at the pro level. Please let Alex go and do not resign him. I don’t think any H.C. wants any of our QB’s!!

  133. By KDB on Jan 3, 2011 | Reply

    Hermie,

This is the Last time for me this season-I swear it. LOL!
Say what you will I’m sure you are a nice guy and yes, I played on this level but I also own and run a successful biz. Additionally, my family members are some of the better coaches in the Bay Area and yes, they know the game very well, even better than me. So to say I’m a jock well yes, but I also have a brain and business acumen and know football very well. But so does Jimmy Johnson, ETC., ETC., ETC., and they all say the same thing that I have been saying.

Alex has not been the main problem and if you understand the game very well then there’s a no need for this portion of the discussion it needs to focus elsewhere. —This has ALWAYS been about the coaching or LACK thereof, PERIOD end of story. But we can go a bit further here. Now has he made mistakes, yes, Gosh how many picks does Eli and Brees have this yr, yes exactly and yes, Alex is every bit as good as them just this system has not had anyone who knew what was up other than Norv Turner. Additionally during Alex’s time here he hasn’t had ANY proper development, who’s mentored him, that’s right HIMSELF, and NO ONE would have done any better in this predicament, and he hasn’t had a mentor since Norv left you can’t argue that either. Nor can you argue the fact that EVERYONE NEEDS ONE ESPECIALLY AT HIS YOUNG AGE. Should he have been drafted #1, no, should any QB, maybe 3 maybe 4 ALL time in this game but that’s it, but it isn’t his fault.

So no sense in going back and forth I appreciate you and your opinions but I’m not subscribing to them not for one minute, and please note, it’s nothing personal, I’m just on another level and I’m not trying to be condescending to you but like it or not, but like it or not that’s the way it is seriously.
I hope we can get this right as an organization and it ALL comes down to COACHING and you cannot argue that either.

Have a good one, let’s hope the York’s get this right.

  134. By Hermie on Jan 3, 2011 | Reply

I sure do hope York gets it right!! And yes KDB, I am at a higher level than you will probably ever be having been a student of the game some 40+ yrs…but that is what blogs are for every level and my blogs are nothing personal to you either. Time will prove one of us right (Martz agrees with me, one of the best in the biz!). If they would keep Alex after this year…I hope you are right!! If he goes elsewhere, I hope I am right!! This is one of the only things we disagree on…right now!! :-)

I am looking forward to seeing who he names as GM because that will play a big part on who the HC will be. Word has it is Baalke has the inside track. Hard worker, a little inexperienced. I would not mind Billick or Harbaugh although I might rather see Harbaugh come in as O.C.. I still like Gruden and there will be some let go soon too.

You want to know why Mike Martz is doing *OK* in CHI town right now? Because they have 2 speedy receivers, 2 big receivers, they know how to run routes and they run spread. Ez duhh, oh but wait how many sacks do they have? How many Quaterbacks have been sacked under Mike Martz? Shows how much you really know Hermie.

Jonah…shows how ignorant you are…what does Martz being a great O.C. have anything to do with Chicago…Duh is right!!

Martz has a history as an offensive minded type of guy…that is why I brought him up…not because of Chicago…He preferred Shawn Hill…Nuff said!!

Im watching the orange bowl before before the game started and they mentioned that the Denver Broncos and the San Francisco 49ers are interested in Jim Harbaugh for there head coaching job. I wonder is Jed York reading our blogs?.Because I mentioned in a blog a couple weeks ago that he would be a good fit. Naaaaaaaaaaa

Bring Alex Smith back next year

At this point we might as well just stick with Alex.

Alex Smith is a COACH KILLER….Its obvious… we lost lets see.. Norv Turner… Mike Mcarthy,… Nolan…. Mike Martz…Jimmy Raye…. Singletary…. how many more good coaches will we lose before we lose the real LOSER….Alex Smith thanks for TRYING Alex…but the 9ers are use to DOING not TRYING…… After 6 years I am ready for change

    HAPPY NEW YEAR
    NEW GM
    NEW COACH

Oh and this JR Baca Guy must be Alex Smith Family member…. I think I saw him at the game sitting behind the 9ers bench 9 rows behind me with other Alex Smith Family members… Family of Alex are the only ones rooting for him…. unless the rooters are LOSERS and use to losing.

Boy King says he will only sign checks BS if you believe this I have a little bridge I would like to sell you. He wants to be another J Jones and that means keeping full control. Baalke hire if true says it all. I can’t see any decent coach wanting to come here and face this.

I have been 49er fan since they came to Sf, used to go to Kezar before they moved to the stick soon to be 77 years young, I have seen it all and this is the worst since Joe Thomas traded all those draft choices for OJ. As long as the Yorks have interest in club I see no big changes coming, Boy King says money no object. Prove it. Hire top gm and coach.

Just win! How can a fan want their team to loose? Just because you get a higher draft pick does not mean you will have a good draft! Look at the good teams, or look at the 49′ers back in the 80′s. They have good drafts because they can evaluate players, that’s what makes a good draft!

im sure we’ll be alright next year, just as long as theres no injuries

  148. By gary potter on Jan 4, 2011 | Reply

Well , it’s a done deal Baalke is in. Now let us see who he picks for coach and if Boy King is true to his word and just signs checks. I have my doubts.

You guys know what I come to realize, it’s not so much Alex’s fault but it’s his jersey # 11. Alex’s statistic is good enough to be a solid QB. Yeah, if you look up who ever had that # in the NFL before they weren’t successful. So it has to be a curse in the NFL. Drew Blesoe had #11 and he was a good QB but never really live up to the hype and get kick outta NE. LOL!!

I hope they bring Alex back. Give him a name change to Alexa and let him try out for the Gold Rush.
