Smith Up For FedEx Air Award

Posted by Taylor Price on December 14, 2010 – 10:01 AM

When you have the best quarterback rating of any Week 14 starter such as Alex Smith did last week, it should come as no surprise that the 49ers signal caller is one of three nominees for FedEx’s Air Player of the Week.

Smith, along with Super Bowl MVPs Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are the Week 14 nominees.

Smith completed 17-of-27 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-21 win over Seattle. He finished with his best quarterback rating of 130.9 and won his first start since Week 6.

Smith was also nominated for GMC’s Never Say Never Moment of the Week.

Give me a break. Alex finally has one good game, and all of a sudden he’s the great savior? PULLEEEEZ. If it had been a season of good play, I could understand all the hullaballoo.

Just stick by your team no matter who is behind center. Alex Smith has had a rough go of a carrer but to be honest he has not had the best of the best as far as supporting cast. Not just offensive weapons but more so an O-line. I guess I will just ahead and call it now. Smith will lead us to a win over the Chargers and into the playoffs….We will be in the NFC championship game. If they use Westbrook and Dixon the way they did aginst the chargers and keep going to VD over the middle we have the west in the bag.

Alex had alot of help from other players making plays.Lets see how he does against the Chargers. If he blows that game he will point fingers at every one else. I don’t think 1 game after 5 years with the team dosn’t sound good.

Way to go Alex. We do not need a qb he has got it. The ability is there just needs the confidence. Just keep spreading it out and let him throw and put up points, And then set up the run. But a new qb will set us back and i do not believe we need one one we have one who is as potentially as good as Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers just had better situation and i am not worried about the 6 yrs look howold he was when he cameout he still is only a couple yrs older then Bradford, so i think it will click and once he gets it with the weapons we have watchout. My concern is are db’s we need corners. other then that its a growing process and i have belief in Smith, even tho everyone keeps righting him off. I see the ability so its going to come. Singletary i love him and want him as coach but we need to open it up we are to predictable, so if smith comes out gunning and we get ahead we will be tough to beat, because we can run the ball and play good d in those sitautions

It is going to take alot more than 3 more strong games for me to believe in this loser! Good job for having a good QB rating for 1 game, but we will soon see that he should have never been drafted in the first place!

I hope I’m wrong. GO NINERS!

all you people saying if he wins the next three games obviously arent true niner fans. i am a 49er faithful and always believe. Alex Smith has not had it easy with different coordinators and bad offensive lines, hell i dont think we would have been much better if we chose Aaron Rogers in that draft instead of Alex. So stop hating on the guy its a team sport and its not just his fault that we have been losing. Also if you look at our losses by points and who we played against this year, we could easily have been 8-5 right now instead of 5-8.

I agree 100% it’s one good game people, it doesn’t make up for the 6 years of many, many, horrible games that he has put up. Alex Smith is a joke, but we’ll see if the team can keep winning and make him look good, as long as Alex Smith can at least not turn the ball over we can win. The WHOLE TEAM get’s the credit, all that can be said of Alex is that he had a good game for once. It’s do or die for the 49ers, crunch time, and the same thing would have happened with Troy Smith too. I am a 30 year 49ers fan, and love this organization, but when we finally fire Singletary and get rid of Alex, we can probably return to our GLORY DAYS.

  20. By Jeremy on Dec 14, 2010 | Reply

They’re just asking you to vote for him for player of the week, not player of the decade. He did have a good game, but beating the Seahawks on one of their worst performances all season was only a small step in the right direction. This Thursday is his biggest test, and probably the biggest game of his career so far. This is do or die for him and Singletary. One thing I will say in Singletary’s defense: the team looks much more competent than they did at the beginning of the season. They have not been shooting themselves in the foot with penalties and turnovers like they did the first 6 games. So they are improving, but we’ll see by how much this Thursday.

  21. By Jeremy S on Dec 14, 2010 | Reply

If I was Alex, I would beam footballs at the booing fans! This guy can’t get a break even at candlestick. Get past your own egos and let the guy try to win games for you! Everybody think Troy is god around here. His numbers are not even that good, and has poor vision. He’ll be good, but not now. before he got injured, he was playing good, but the defense kept giving teams a chance to win, and did.

  22. By Ninerswillprevail on Dec 14, 2010 | Reply

Just like the pros said!!! Alex is fools gold!!! He has one OK game but lets see if he chokes thursday!!! I think TROY needs to be the starter!!!

Hey bobcat, who said he was now a savior? Your the only one. He did, however, turn in a very good performance and deserves credit for it. You might find that acknowledging a good performance doesn’t automatically mean your endorsing the players future if you stopped being a hater for ten seconds.

  24. By 9erFaithful on Dec 14, 2010 | Reply

Wow, so many fake 49ers fans on the official site. First of all, this is a nomination for best WEEK 14 performance, not career performance you douche bags, learn how to read.
Secondly, I’m tired of all you Alex Smith bashers aka 49ers FAKE FANS that always say the same “6 years” spew.
If you were really a fan, you’d know that Alex Smith hasn’t been playing for 6 years, he’s been on and off each year due to injuries. You may or may not also know that our Niners have had a HORRIBLE O-Line for the past 6 years as well which is why all of our QB’s thus far have seemed like “garbage” QB’s
Football is a team effort and no 1 man can decide the entire 4 quarters of it.

Wow so much for the 49er faithful. And you guys call yourself a 49er fan? Support your team no matter what. Plus don’t talk about how if we get Andrew Luck or any other QB because the way we have our staffing right now, we’ll just have another Alex Smith story. We’ve never built around the QB, always around the Def. WR’s are the slowest in the league, Def has lost us pivotal games and Troy Smith won against .500 below team. We need a new coaching staff that is able to develop a QB. The last chance we ever had was Norv Turner. Just vote for the sake of a 49er you idiots, you guys who are bashing the 49ers might as well get out.

Okay well, Alex has won a couple of games this season anyway. I do consider myself to be a faithful fan, but c’mon. He can’t seriously get an award for just a couple of wins. He seems to have a routine, when is job is on the line, he can win, but if he is exppected to win a game and play like he “loves it”, he bombs. Goodluck at SD.

  49. By PolloLoco on Dec 14, 2010 | Reply

@ Rathman: I think you hit the nail on the head.

Just my opinion, but I believe it is an educated one knowing and coaching football the way I do. Smith is the most talented QB on the roster. Bar none. He has talent and the smarts to be a good QB in this league. We can go back and forth on whether he had a raw deal w/6 OC’s in 6 seasons. We can also debate whether Aaron Rodgers would have had the same inconsistencies here if he was drafted by this team given the same instabilities. However, it doesn’t matter. What matters is what they do Thursday night and the following Sunday’s. Hopefully he builds on what he did the Seahawks.

Oh yea, idiots. It is a team effort no matter what. The QB has to put it there, but the WR’s, TE’s, and RB’s have to catch it. Lineman have to block, D has to get the ball back to the Offense. Guess you get the idea.

One of the best plays Sunday was the first from scrimmage. Common knowledge in football circles that you throw the ball at the feet of the receiver IF the screen play is busted to prevent a turnover and intentional grounding penalty. Yet people in the stands were calling for his head.

Another good one was Westbrook’s TD. Alex recognized the blitz and audibled Westbrook to that side where he caught the ball and ran it in for a TD. I like a lot about Troy, but I didn’t see him doing a lot of that latter things. TB killed us w/those blitzes.

  50. By PolloLoco on Dec 14, 2010 | Reply

Alex may or may not make it on this team. I believe he has the intelligence, heart, and desire to be a successful starting QB. If he doesn’t continue w/SF then I hope he finds a stable team that he can thrive with. He’s a #1 overall pick. He’ll get another chance. I’d like to see him continue w/SF. If not, I hope he doesn’t go with another NFC West team.

Call me whatever, but I like seeing good people w/good work ethics that bust their a$$e$ have success.

It’s a Team Game. If we win it isn’t because of all ALEX and if we lose it isn’t because of all ALEX.

He did a fine job and has done so most of the yr. He’s our best option and can be a darn good QB if he has time, wideout that don’t drop balls, and if he minimizes his picks, the one’s that are not the wide outs fault and as of this season, half of his picks are on the wide outs, no question.

This is a team game and anybody who UNDERSTANDS the game, knows that.

What did Jimmy Johnson say this past weekend? Alex smith has all the talent in the world as an NFL QB.

Let’s just hope the team wins.

evidently nobody saw how terrible about half the throws he made sunday were. hes lucky morgan, westbrook, and davis can make plays after short throws. not to mention the 5 turnovers caused by the defense. without the turnovers and yards after the catch it would have been a typical alex performance. you wont get either of those against the chargers so itll be another 10 points or less game with multiple interceptions. if he comes back next year ill puke. 8 years is enough suffering

  57. By KDB on Dec 15, 2010 | Reply

way2sic–I’m on boardd with you referring to Alex. Fans that blame him DON’T UNDERSTAND the GAME very well, and that is a for sure not an I think, it’s a FOR SURE because there’s way more to the game than one guy, ESPECIALLY in this situation.

I’ve been around the NFL personally and I’ve seen average QB’S win Super Bowls. Alex is above average in mine and others opinions, however, when you do put players out there with a WELL BELOW coaching staff, and a marginal O-Line, ETC, ETC, ETC then yes, everyone always wants to blame the QB, but not me.

I also try and weed through the Arm Chair QB’s that have NEVER played on this level or even at a high college level, especially when they say how bad someone is when they don’t UNDERSTAND the game very well, no matter how long they have been a fan.

I’ll take my opinion and combine mine because of my playing and coaching experience along with that of Jimmy Johnson, John Gruden, and Brian Billick’s just to name a few that think Alex has all the talent in the world as an NFL QB rather than a few Arm Chhairs QB’s.

Remember in my opinion it’s better to be a HAS Been, than a NEVER WAS if you get my drift?

Well at least the sf giants brought a championship home.

Rathman, I support my team but I don’t endorse the people giving so much credit for one win. this is a team effort not just one guy. QB is the heart of the offense to score but the reason they win it’s because of the defence, they done theier job well. I’m 65 years old and I have been root for the niner since the 70s so don’t tell me how should I support my team. maybe you should get married with Alex because you love him so much and your so blind that Alex start this season with losing streak.

Last week I predicted 3 days before the Seattle game that the 9ers would beat the Seahawks 41-13. The final score was 40-21. Not too shabby.

This week, I predict the 9ers will lose to the Chargers 27-17 and end all hopes of a playoff berth. No matter how much I want my Niners to win, I just don’t see them slowing down the Chargers’ offense. Plus it’s raining in Southern Cali right now, which means FUMBLES all day. The Chargers are good at forcing turnovers and I am prepared to see a couple Smith INTs, like it or not.

Sorry faithful but I’m just callin’ it like it is, playin’ the odds. Alex is a 50-50 kinda guy. Plays well one week, plays poorly the next. And Singletary is not a good coach and with only three days to prepare, his game plan will be lackluster at best. But if we win, I will be the first one here sayin “MY BAD!!!”

  65. By ChickenFriedRice on Dec 16, 2010 | Reply

The #1 Reason I don’t llike Alex Smith – He is NOT A LEADER, or better yet a VOCAL LEADER. Out of all positions, the QB has to be the one who is at least one of the top three vocal leaders in your team. This is a must, because football is a team game and the QB is an extension of the coach on the field in charge of execution. Therefore, the QB has to be able to gain confidence in his teammates at all times, inspire his team, and make his teammates believe in what they are doing. A shy, quiet, timid QB will only give you a 50% win percentage. A true leader who has above average QB skills will give you Super Bowls.

Case in point: Watch the video on this website of the Niners Post Game Locker Room after the win over Seattle. First, Singletary does his quick 1 minute speech. And then what happens after? Instead of immediately taking charge of the locker room like Troy Smith did after every Niner win, Patrick Willis had to speak up and tell the team that Alex should go ahead and say something. The camera pans over to Alex and he looks super timid and even stumbles upon his words.

Bottom line, and I’ve been saying it all year: Alex does not have the leadership capabilities to get his teammates going. His talent may get him a win or two here and there, but his demeanor and make-up will never allow for a team to sustain consistency over a long stretch of games. He just doesn’t have the “IT” factor. Brady, Manning, Montana, Young, Favre, Elway, Roethlisberger, etc… all these guys are natural born leaders and teammates undoubtedly follow their lead. Alex is a whole different story.

CFR-I’m feeling a little more NERVEOUSLY OPTOMISTIC but prepared for the worst especially given what you have laid out.

Let’s hope it’s your bad but I see your points.

    Go Niners.

  67. By ChickenFriedRice on Dec 16, 2010 | Reply

Just wait and see Thursday night and you guys will see what I’m talking about. Alex will buckle under the pressure of a must-win game and he will be back to his old self, throwing interceptions and orchestrating three-and-outs as often as Kobe Bryant scores points.

I hope I’m wrong and he goes out and manages a great game. But I’m probably right.

  68. By ChickenFriedRice on Dec 16, 2010 | Reply

KDB…I really hope I’m wrong and we find a way to squeak out a win. I had tickets to this game but sold them last week upon finding out Alex would be the starter vs. Seattle. That’s how much I do not want to see this guy lead our team.

Yes, I am an Alex hater. I admit it. I can’t stand him. But I still want our team to win. And the more Alex can prove me wrong, the more I am prepared to eat crow.

But like I said, I’m probably right. Because I’ve been right the last six years. In fact, I’m on a 72 month winning streak regarding Alex. We haven’t been to the playoffs since we’ve drafted him.

On the other hand… LETS GO NINERS!!!!!

  69. By KDB on Dec 16, 2010 | Reply

You know CFR-I respect your opinion, you know that. I am a Alex supporter as you know, and no mattwer what happens tonight I still will be.

Now for the game—I do agree that he needs to do his part tonight for sure BUT–in order to do that he needs Time, No Dropped Balls, A Running Game, and No Picks.

We also need—A Darn good Defense, Special Teams and Coaching and it all has to be close to perfect to win this game, no doubt.

    Go Niners
