Holiday Spirit: It’s All About Winning – And Giving Back

Posted by Sam Good on December 13, 2010 – 9:27 AM

San Francisco 49ers-California Lottery winner Elva Gagnon and her husband Chris threw a party of a lifetime yesterday in their VIP suite at Candlestick Park.

From their perch above the field, the couple and 14 of their closest friends and family watched the 49ers beat the Seattle Seahawks 40-21. Also, 49ers legendary wide receiver Dwight Clark stopped by the suite to surprise hello to greet the winner. It has always been Chris’ dream to meet Clark, and yesterday it came true.

Both Elva and Chris, who are diehard fans of the 49ers, are physically disabled. For them, a trip to Candlestick Park would normally present outstanding obstacles. But that wasn’t the case yesterday with access to a VIP suite. Their invited guests were all people who have helped them overcome some of their daily challenges, and the party was their way to give back, say thanks, and have a great time.

“We have been pinching ourselves ever since we got the call,” Elva said during the game. “Who knew that when I entered my non-winning 49ers ticket into the second-chance drawing that I’d be a winner and could treat our closest friends to such a day we never dreamed of.”

Elva was one of thousands of Lottery players who read the fine print and realized they had another chance to win unique prizes with through the REPLAY feature of the 49ers Scratchers game. Besides yesterday’s win, the 49ers have been giving some great gifts to fans this season that included a road trip for two to see the 49ers play “Monday Night Football” in Arizona on November 29, and they just stuffed the stockings of five lucky fans with pairs of season tickets for 2011.

Throughout this season of giving, the 49ers Scratchers game has provided more than $1.5 million for California public schools. Also, Lottery Director Joan Borucki took Bay Area Teachers of the Year down on the field to celebrate at the 49ers game on October 17.

With all of the gift giving – including yesterday’s victory – what else does Santa have in his bag for the team?

I am a strong believer in helping one another. when you bless people it always comes back to you. it is so powerfull to see my team give of their time and money to their community. I pray blessings over these 2 fans and over the entire 49er team, that our awesome Lord would pour out his spirit on every 49er team member & staff. Lord help them, guide them, and lead them through the rest of their season. Bless their giving and protect them at all times. Continue to give the whole team your wisdom. In Christ Jesus name I pray, Amen.
