The 49ers will play the Seattle Seahawks for a second time this season on Sunday. And Alex Smith will be under center as the 49ers starting quarterback against Seattle for a second time as well.
A day after Mike Singletary said his starting quarterback for Sunday had yet to be determined, the head coach told KNBR’s Morning Show that Alex Smith would get the nod over Troy Smith in a pivotal divisional game at Candlestick Park.
“The experience makes a difference,” Singletary cited as the biggest reason for the change.
He also spoke of Smith’s experiences in the offensive system throughout training camp and the first seven games of the regular season where he led the 49ers to a 1-6 record. Smith appeared to be making strides before a separated shoulder suffered in Carolina moved him to the sidelines.
In his place, Troy Smith guided the 49ers to a 3-2 record with two divisional wins and a victory overseas in London.
But after Troy completed 10-of-25 passes in a 34-16 defeat in Green Bay, Singletary decided to go back to Alex, who’s completed 59.1-percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Alex should boost the 49ers red zone offense. Eight of his touchdowns have come inside the opponent’s 20-yard line where he has a quarterback rating of 124.4 with no interceptions.
“Right now he gives us the best chance to win,” Singletary said.
