Alex Smith to Start Sunday vs. Seattle

Posted by Taylor Price on December 7, 2010 – 10:21 AM

The 49ers will play the Seattle Seahawks for a second time this season on Sunday. And Alex Smith will be under center as the 49ers starting quarterback against Seattle for a second time as well.

A day after Mike Singletary said his starting quarterback for Sunday had yet to be determined, the head coach told KNBR’s Morning Show that Alex Smith would get the nod over Troy Smith in a pivotal divisional game at Candlestick Park.

“The experience makes a difference,” Singletary cited as the biggest reason for the change.

He also spoke of Smith’s experiences in the offensive system throughout training camp and the first seven games of the regular season where he led the 49ers to a 1-6 record. Smith appeared to be making strides before a separated shoulder suffered in Carolina moved him to the sidelines.

In his place, Troy Smith guided the 49ers to a 3-2 record with two divisional wins and a victory overseas in London.

But after Troy completed 10-of-25 passes in a 34-16 defeat in Green Bay, Singletary decided to go back to Alex, who’s completed 59.1-percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Alex should boost the 49ers red zone offense. Eight of his touchdowns have come inside the opponent’s 20-yard line where he has a quarterback rating of 124.4 with no interceptions.

“Right now he gives us the best chance to win,” Singletary said.

why don’t you just jam a knife right into my heart, use the loser QB of 49ers history finish the season as the ultimate losing team.

I cannot believe this…There goes our chance at winning anymore this season. Please get rid of all the quarterbacks, the O.C., D.C. and H.C.!! Let’s see…we can’t win with Alex, so let’s try Troy…well Troy only won 2 out of 4, let’s make sure Alex is worthless and start him again!! Boost the Red Zone offense, he won’t be able to get us there!!

Yeah!!! Thanks Singletary, you’ll be gone quicker with Alex at the helm. Just think, when the season ends, the niners will be able to part with two of their problems for the price of one. Oh, the price being whatever severance you get, and then the horrible Singletary/Alex Smith expirement will finally be at an end. Hopefully the front office will be smart and bring in an offensive minded coach so the west coast offense can be reinstated and right the sinking ship!!! Im no Gruden Fan but if he brings in the west coast offense, sooner is better than later!!!

At first I couldn’t wait for the end of the season, but what if Singletary is the best coach the Yorks are capable of hiring….After following the 49ers for 20 plus years I’m jumping ship if they bring in another clown. I realistically don’t expect Super Bowls every year (not anymore), but at least put a competitive team on the field with coaches that understand football.

Get off of the Troy Smith Bandwagon already, both these QB’s will suck for the rest of their time in 49ers if we don’t get a quality QB coach, HC, OC, and DC. It don’t matter who you start because both of them suck. So stupid of you 49er wannabe fans no supporting your team. First it was the *WE WANT CARR* and he costs us the game. Now that Troy wins a couple of games your all over his nuts. I don’t care who starts, what I want to see at the end of this season is some changes. Sing you stay back at D Coordinator and we bring in a real HC and OC, then Jed York resigns and out of nowhere Bill Parcels decides to come to the 49ers. Hopefully Santa Claus is coming around. Go 49ers, Got your back all the way no matter how you playing!

No one has ever been on the Troy bandwagon…but anyone who has watched Alex the last 6yrs. I don’t see Alex ever being able to handle the heat!! That is not to say Troy is the guy, but you have to have some kind of pocket presence…which at least Troy has.

i said it once and will say it again…look at the ranking of the teams alex played against..then look at the rankings of the teams troy played against…alex had played againt top team like the saints, kansis city, atlanta, philly just to name acouple…with troy the really only good team so far he had play was green bay, which he lost…every one was bashing alex smith and praying troy all i ask look at the ranking of the teams that both QB have played before you bash alex even more…

Both these QB’s (Alex and Troy) give me cardiac arrest everytime they have the ball. I will ALWAYS root for my 9ers, but I gotta say the inconsistance this season is KILLING me. I understand that Alex knows the play book better, but his poor decisions really hurt when they happen. I REALLY REALLY REALLY want a W this Sunday againist an opponent we should’ve beat the first game of the season. I hope we don’t end up thanking Pete Carroll again for out coaching us. This is our 13th game of the season, either as a coaching staff we know it – or we don’t. I want BIG changes next season — mostly I want new ownership! Ever since the Yorks have owned us; we’ve stunk! 9ERS por vida!!

  13. By 9nerNationFan on Dec 7, 2010 | Reply

I agree with Jerry, I’m tired of people jumping on the Troy Smith Bandwagon and Vanessa you couldn’t have said it any better. I’m tired of seeing both of these quaterbacks they both blow. We need a coaching change period. It’s not the players man, its the lack of coaches. We haven’t gotten a quality coach since Norv Turner left. But Jed York just seems to like paying cheap. Well if you buy cheap you get cheap.

  14. By CT on Dec 7, 2010 | Reply

this team is inconsistent from the starting QB playing like a backup to the Coaching staff. Once we get consistency, no matter the QB we should be ok. But, that wont happen this season. oh well, way to take another step backwards. (hope im wrong about Smith)

I love the decision that has been made here. if anyone has watched the 9ers this year there is no doubt that Alex has the best physical ability to lead this team and he has plenty to do so. His problem is he is too conservative. Sure he has 9 int to 9 tds but where have these ints came? you never see him throw a pick on a long ball because he is afraid to take a chance. Defenders know that he is not going to throw a deep ball so there is no need to worry about double moves and you can jump routes without concern if you are covering morgan or crab. Troy came in with less ability and stretched the field. This opened up running lanes and allowed the abilty of our recievers to show. If alex will take a few shots here and there it will open everything up for him and unlike troy he is an accurate enough qb to pick apart a defense that is in softer coverage. I think that there is still a chance that 49ers win the division and i just couldnt see it happening with troy taking snaps. Im tired of hearing about the Rams. Lets finish strong. GO NINERS!

I’m surprised Singletary didn’t name himself the starting QB for Sunday. Hopefully someone tells Alex Smith that he plays for the 49ers so he doesn’t throw it to the Seahawks over and over again. He loves throwing to the other team.

Look the bottom lne is that we need to just finish the season..We might win we might not, but moving forward there has to be some change for next year…I think sing is a great motivator and a great person for the team, he is trying his best, but after the day is done its the players on the field that need to make the plays not sing, he already played as one of the best linebackers in linbacker history. So I think its on the players, because when they are playing up to there potential they win, but it has seemed that often we get into a pinch and cant find our way out..Anyway, I think sing diserves another chance and I think that Alex and troy would be good as backups, and we need to find a great QB out of this years draft…I might be wrong but either way, i will stick by the team until the end…Ride and Die 49er!!!!lets get seattle..

  22. By CT on Dec 7, 2010 | Reply

though many dont like this move, Smith was the first round pick a few years back so he has to be given his chance to prove his worth and let the money play-this is his first year he had some consistency. good or bad, its about the money. next year, pick up a quality qb with experience, draft a good first or second round qb, mold the qb under a proven, knowledgable staff (new HC, OC, maybe DC and owner) continue to upgrade the Defense and we should be good in two years. We will never be the 49ers from back in the day- time to establish a new identity.

Think we all expect miracles out of Troy, he’s only been here since September! Missing camp is huge, I do’nt think Alex is the amswer, Other then our secondary I think our d is good. We have the pieces but are missing something! I think if we hired Gruden in the off season we’d be 8-4 instead of the other way! We need to get him in the off season..Coach only cares about our D! Seifert, Mooch, Den Green, Billick would be only people I’d interview…we were done when we stopped running our West Coast offense! Lets get back to it!

I agree, even though Troy Smith gave us a spark, he is way too inaccruate. I remember watchign the GB game and he overthrew MC on an InRoute on 3rd down. Shoulda swapped to Alex Smith when Troy lost 0-21 to the Bucs…cmon Bucs….Although they both aren’t as good, Alex Smith is the better of the two. Hopefully Alex and Troy will get a good HC and OC by the end of this year.

I don’t know why there are so many Alex Smith fans here……he has as many interceptions as touchdowns this year! Troy only has one, and that came in a game where the o-line was terrible. I don’t see Troy fumbling the ball or throwing it away when he has a chance down field. Neither do i see other players like Vernon Davis go up and shout at Troy for doing a bad job like he did with Alex. Alex is no winner, he doesn’t have the winning mentality (just like Singletary). Troy Smith does! He is our best shot at actually staying in this race…

I’ve been a forty niners fan since the early 70′s but when I hear all this negative talk from so called fans it makes it hard to want to be a fan. I would rather be a fan of a team where the fans stand behind their team and want to see them succeed. 49er fans are a miserable bunch of cry babies.

ALEX SMITH AGAIN! WOW! Sing needs to scrap the playbook. It looks like pop warner football. We know what’s coming before the ball is snapped. Where is the crossing routes, pick plays, confusion period. It’s not there and it sucks to watch my team get there butts kicked every week. I personally like Sing and wish he would just worry about the D and let someone else take over the O. I can go on and on but I won’t. Basically I love the 9ers and I’m sick of the better luck next time speeches.

I stand by our team till the death! I love how Troy stepped in & was a great backup to Alex through his injury. now it is Alex’s last chance to be the Starting QB – If he falters in the final 4 games & proves he cannot step up then we can think about a new QB next year…Hell maybe we can get Andrew Luck in the ’11 draft!! And I truly think Sing just is not up to the challenge of HC – What I would do to have Tony Dungy here!! If you think about the games we have lost: Idiotic defensive error to lose to the Falcons – BIG loss to a great team!! Pathetic losses to The Saints & Eagles & the only reason we lost to The Panthers was cos Alex got injured – David Carr was a useless replacement that cost us the game. SO we could so easily have had 3 of those 4 losses back [7-5 doesnt sound so bad does it?]. Alex is the scapegoat for many other blemishes made by the TEAM not just him. Go Alex, show us what you are made of & take The Hawks down on Sunday

Why is everyone jumping on Singletary? Vince Lombardi couldn’t win with the garbage QB’s we have fielded this year. Get a REAL QB next year via draft or trade and give Singletary a year with the opportunity to win! Then we can make our decision on him

I’ve been a 9ers fan since 1980 and i think I know a little about winning quarterbacks. Alex Smith is not our dynasty QB. We hae given him plenty of chances to prove himself and he faulters under pressure and can’t win when it counts. As far as Troy Smith he needs to be given the nod and finish the season to gain experience and work on next year. He has a good chance of finishing the season at .500 which is all that we can hope for now. As far as for Mike, he is a true Hall of Famer LB and is one of the greatest but unfortunately playing and coaching are two different things. It’s time he step down and not tarnish his name as one of the worst coaches in NFL history.

As far as next season we need a new QB with experience and pay the salary and or draft a new one we can develop under the tutelage of a QB coach.

Right now we can’t compete until we make some drastic changes.

    GO 9ers!

  45. By Jeremy on Dec 7, 2010 | Reply

Yeah, you can’t expect Troy to walk on water every week like he did in his second game where he threw what, 4 touchdowns? Granted only one of them counted, but the team looks way more comfortable with him at the helm. They have made less fatal mistakes and made less penalties since he has taken over. We’ll see if that continues without him next week. Hopefully Alex won’t let us down the way he has in literally every game but one. As for Singletary, it seems like he was doing a very good job as defensive coordinator, and he is clearly a good motivator considering that the team still comes out and competes no matter what their record. Even at 1-6 they were fired up to play, and played well other than shooting themselves in the foot over and over with penalties. But he just doesn’t seem to be competent when it comes to making big decisions in a close game. Why didn’t they go for 2 when it was 14-12? What kind of confidence does that inspire in your offense? The fact is, he has no confidence in his offense, which is why they didn’t go for it on the 50 yard line, down by 15, with 10 minutes left. Instead they punted it back to a phenomenal quarterback (Aaron Rodgers) who took advantage of a tired defense and put the game well out of reach. Sing just makes odd decisions in every game. Every time he goes for it on 4th down I find myself wondering why, and every time he doesn’t go for it on 4th down I find myself wondering if he is really trying to win the game, or just keep it close. It just seems that he’s being outsmarted by every other coach, week after week.

I dont get it . its like musicial chairs, I feel for alex over the years just getting put right in to the fire with out sitting for two years behind a good QB,five diffrent offense systems .this year was two yrs in a row with same of. and yet he cant make the cut and its not all his fault.the play calling has been to safe over all. alex gets hot when job is on the line after that he gos back to being safe .troy is good he only played hand full games. you give him all of season,pre-season repps.hes got skills. the whole team does but the offense cor,and single dont let them play there game.look at the wins they opened it up and let the players work to there talent.. bring back debbartlo please ,westcoast offense too. go niners

Troy provides a spark and desire to win…his coaches with there overly ridiculous conservative play calling are damaging this team. Alex sucks and needs to be let go…Troy has practiced with this team for 3 weeks and is 3-2, a much better start than Alex who seems to certainly excite a team…just not his own. Great quarterbacks aren’t made in 5 weeks, and certainly aren’t going to be great with a shaky line and conservative plays, let Troy play I guarantee he’ll produce results like he did in Ohio State.

Hey looks like we’re making plans to get a better draft pick! 4-12 will drop us around #5 which is great for possibly getting Andrew Luck, or Jack Locker, I even like Mallet.

Figure bring in one of those guys, Let Troy Smith learn the offense to start the season, cut Alex, and replace the coach with an offensive minded coach like Harbaugh or Gruden and we can once again be respected as an NFC super power! Ahh yes….seems so easy to me.

  52. By KDB on Dec 7, 2010 | Reply

This is actually the correct move hands down and anybody that says Alex has had x number of yrs to prove himself just doesn’t GET IT. Tom Brady would not have been able to do much better in this musical number of dysfunctional systems and even he would not be able to fix this TEAM, WAKE UP.

    T. Smith is at best a Backup. Alex is a dynasty QB in the right system, but this ain’t it.

Spread the Offense, and let it Rip and just have fun. We ain’t going to the Playoffs so have fun.

Before Alex got hurt, he led the NFL in Red Zone Scoring, like it or not, he’s our best option but for what, to win 2 more games. He led the NFL in Red Zone scoring and not because he was playing against prevent Defenses. No he drove the ball down the filed welll. Yes he made a few mistakes but more than half of his picks were on the wide Outs. It ain’t his because of where we are at. WAKE UP its the COACHING Rookies.

  53. By KDB on Dec 7, 2010 | Reply

And another thing. Superman wouldn’t fix this mess. Its starts at the top and then a GM and then a new coaching staff and then a few new players. But in that order!!!

I like Singletary, I don’t like this decision. This decision must have been HEAVILY infuenced by others. (Remember when Sing made the call to start Shaun Hill? ..) He does not have a love affair with Alex, though it appears someone in the org does.
What QB in history has ever been given the amount of allowances and excuses that Alex has??? If you look at everygame this year (including pre-season) you’ll see –> Less Alex Smith playing time = More Games Won.
Wins are the bottom line. A QB’s individual statistic in one aspect of the game (rating of 124.4 in redzone) means nothing if you don’t lead your team to win. PLEASE prove me wrong Alex !!! (or maybe I should say, “After 5 years of excuses, please START proving me wrong.)

Alex should boost the 49ers red zone offense. Eight of his touchdowns have come inside the opponent’s 20-yard line where he has a quarterback rating of 124.4 with no interceptions.

I dont care who you play if you turn the ball over you will lose. I think we have a good HC were just need a new OC and DC. troy is not the long term answering but he is the best thing we got for now.

I’m a Niners fan for 23 years. Although I may not be happy with the team at all times, I will always support them no matter what. Some of these fans are blind bandwagon jumpers. How can you be a true fan and hate on your team so bad and wish them badly? If Alex plays well and we make the playoffs I bet people will be on his sack. This seasons disappointment cannot be placed on 1 or 2 people. The whole team wasn’t playing well. Alex wasn’t playing as bad as people make it out to be before he got hurt . Yes he made some poor desicions and that fumble in the Philly game was absolutely horrible. But several interceptions were not his fault i.e. tipped balls. To everyone who hates on Alex and say he’s fails under pressure yadayadayada: How many of you can get booed by your own fans in the entire stadium and fight to stay in the game AND lead 2 awesome drives for touchdowns??? That takes a special person to be able to handle that. I will always respect him and give credit where it is due for that. He will never be Montana or Young but he is and will be a good QB somewhere in the NFL. I personally hope it’s in SF.

IT SEEMS LIKE THE PLAYBOOK IS NOT DESIGN TO WIN BUT NOT TO LOOSE BY MUCH. you have to be more agressive on offense and smart, 3rd and 1 you run the ball. 1st and goal at the 2 YOU RUN THE BALL. come on you can figure this out. all the haters out their need to realize that alex smith is our best chance to win. troy smith benefited from the situation and it finally showed that troy was not as good as he seemed. Alex was improving the offense and helping the 49ers. He had a bad record but that was not on him. It was on some poor play calling that led to some close loses. This move by sing is a move that had to be made. Troy is not the qb that will win us the division this year. Maybe in the future if he stinks around, but not this year. Alex gives us the best chance at winning and just wait til sunday and you will all realize that it was the right move.

This season has been more painful that the 2-14 year when we only beat the Cards twice. At least then, everybody knew the 49ers didn’t have any talent on the roster.

We actually still have chance to win the west (small glimmer of hope) and at this point I dont care who is the qb. We have to win out and and hope the Rams and Seagulls lose at least 2 more games. Just check their schedules it is possible. I do agree with a lot of you guys coaching changes have to made in the offseason, as well as personel chages starting at QB. We gotta hire some real football consultants to guide us in this years draft. Owner ship has to “OWN UP”. This team is too talented to be 4-8. This is a nightmare of a season that for some reason seems to repeat itself and Im as well as many Niner Fans are sick of it. FIX IT JED. Alex Smith is a lot better than people think. The commentators like Troy Aikman, and John Gruden and Terry Bradshaw know that. Troy Smith is not as good as some people think. There is a reason he was cut from his previous team. Alex is very big, very smart, he runs well, he stands in the pocket and he has a strong and accurate arm. If he is surrounded by the right talent, he has the potential to be great. No quarterback wins games by himself. Did you watch Peyton Manning the last two weeks? Troy Smith is undisciplined and teams have figured out how to beat him.

Ninerfan49 I agree our secondary needs some help…I have been saying that right along. Our O-line will improve and will be “really” good in a year or 2. Play calling has been one of the big problems this year. Every team gears up to stop the run between the tackles.

H.C. – I think Gruden could come in and could hire really good O.C. and D.C. talent since he would not be intimidated by them and I think he would have a real good repoir with the players. He has been linked to the 9ers…

The issue on the 49s isn’t lack of talent at the QB position or any other player position. The problem is coaching and the organization. The Niners need an overhaul of the coaches and the whole supporting organization. Starting with the owner. The York’s have turned the winningest franchise in NFL history into an also-ran second rate team. What a shame.

Game 1 of the 2010 season: Seahawks 31 San Francisco 6

now for all of those fans that say everyone needs to stop bashing Alex Smith, and look at the difference in team rankings that both QB’s played. Here is a fact, above was the outcome of our first game this season, which by the way ALEX SMITH was the play caller. He couldn’t and didn’t do $h!t for us then, and what the h3!! makes you think he will be different this time around! He has had 6 seasons to do something and has proven nothing! Ya getting him a new coach and keeping consistency will help, but its obvious that he isn’t doing his part either, he as a person and “leader” should do what he can on his own to try and improve, he is a big boy and obviously if you can’t get the help you need, then you need to take it upon yourself to improve. Troy Smith is not the best thing out there, but he has shown to be more versatile and thinks a little bit clearer. so he got sacked instead of throwing the ball, How many times has that happened to Troy, maybe 3-4 times, now how many times has Alex been sacked instead of throwing the ball away. not to mention that when he does throw it, its usually in a very populated area, and most of those “throw aways” have turned into INT’s.

Screw the higher salary of A Smith and go with T Smith our new QB!!!!!!!!!!

  98. By JR on Dec 7, 2010 | Reply

I agree, we definitely need changes in the secondary, our DEF is great, and ya they’ve played poorly at times, but again, its difficult to play hard/smart when your tired and stay on the field 45 out of 60minutes., but i also think we need to have better WR’s. Crabtree is good, but i think he would work out better as a slot reciever, he has not shown to be spectacular, he lacks the speed and size.

Just listen to J. Gruden, Jimmy Johnson and others talk about Alex, they know he’s had a bad situation here with all of the inconsistant changingm, etc., so I think I’ll listen to them, plus Alex’s team mates first and foremost.

  100. By KDB on Dec 7, 2010 | Reply

That being said, they know he can play. But for some that want to bash this kid and blame him for where we are, you need to WAKE UP.

I’m not saying he is our Future , he could be and I’d have no problem with that if we had a GM and a Coaching Staff first, that’s got to be first, but in this situation, he’s the best we have and is certainly not to blame as the above mentioned coaches plus his team mates have said time and again, and I think they may know the game a little bit better than ANY of us.

    @Tybolt:
I did watch the game, and yes he did have a poor game against a GOOD team, I also said “Troy Smith is not the best thing out there” but the ball moves more down the field with Troy, granted Alex can score in the RZ, but lacks the consistency of moving the ball down field,

Why can’t the 49ers ever admit they made a mistake with Alex Smith? He has never been a top level, or even medium level QB. They should have traded him 3 years ago when other teams might have thought that there was a chance of him being good. Now they will play him the last few games and let him totally stink up the field. Hopefully the silver lining will be that they will fall far enough this year to get Luck in the draft. Then they can trade off Alex for whatever they can get for him.

Welcome back Alex! Nothing against you Troy, I appreciate the work you put in, but I still don’t think Alex has been played out. We could so easily have been sitting 4 and 2 before Alex went down. 3 pts to the world champs, 2 pts to the eagles, 3 pts to the Falcons, and 3 pts to the Panthers who we would have beet had Alex not been injured. Then came the soft spot in our schedule, which Alex missed! As gloomy as this season has been, we have been right there with many of the elite teams… our worst losses came from Seattle and KC! Which just shows that we are currently playing to the level of our opponent. That means we have the talent, just not coming quite together yet. I wouldn’t change anything yet becuase you might upset what we are on the verge of accomplishing… not this year, but next. @Sf4t9er… explain “get rid of the garbage”. Go back and look at the picks… look at them objectively. Many of them were the fault of the receivers, a couple of them were batted at the line of scrimmage… He has the best percentage of any QB in the NFL in the red zone – the most difficult place to throw the ball and A Smith has the best percentage of the entire league! Garbage? Excuses? When the excuses are real excuses, then they are justified. Point to a quality QB that had 7 different OC’s to start their career, while getting absolutely annihilated from zero protection. When Alex was drafted, we didn’t have anything around him. We handed him the ball and expected him to take us to the super bowl. The fact that he re-negotiated his contract to stay, instead of leaping at the chance to leave a place that has used him so poorly, says all I need to know about who this guy is. You don’t deserve him as your QB, but I do. Alex, when you went down, I was afraid your days in SF were over. I hope you have the ball from here on out, win the division and continue in the playoff long enough to convice these crappy fans that you’re the guy for the job. Good luck.

Oh man, that made me throw up just typing that. At best, the players read some of this crap, for Alex’s sake I hope he doesn’t, but that’s it. It’s just a forum for couch coaches to rant. I keep telling my kid that video games are a total waste of time, but they are nothing compared to these boards… and yet here I am, nonetheless.

I’m a Singletary fan as a person, but he’s not doing too well at coaching the Niners. We need someone who can get the best out of the guys. I truly believe we have one of the most talented teams in the whole league. But, Alex and Coach have to go, in my opinion. I’m tired of losing. Man, it’s been forever since we’ve even competed for playoffs.

    Alex Smith stats (this season)

    YPG:222
    9 TD
    9 INT
    Sacks PG:1.86
    1 fumble lost

Those stats include the game he didnt finish in CAR
as well as the games he played against playoff bound teams (Saints Falcons Chiefs Eagles) Not great stats I admit. But I knew from the beginning of the season we had to ride alex smith out because we didnt have a better plan in place.I expect to see the “fire York” shirts that I saw in the 2004 Season.

    @KDB,

75 yard drives is indicitive more of the OC than the qb. Bad play calling will stunt a drive far more often than any one player. In a 3 down possession, Alex may only get 2 opportunities to throw the ball at best, and often times they are short throws relying on the receiver to make a move for extra yards. His percentage is good, His number in the red zone are even better, but his INT numbers are awful. Unfortunatley for him, INT’s are never charged to the receiver, which is something that the league should look at.

Mario, I too have been a 9er fan since 1968 when I was turning 9 years old. We have been through some tough times, especially from ’73-’80 when we had coaches and QB’s in and out after Brodie. With the talent we have on the team, I hope we can be winning again soon. I had been screaming to draft offensive lineman, now I am screaming for them to address the secondary. The O-line will come together, I hope Frankie is here to relish in it!! I am frustrated like any other niner fan and hope we can right this ship!!

I am hoping for Alex’s sake that he does well in the last four games….we have to WIN OUT to have a chance and still need to do some “scoreboard watching”…remember we are in the NFC Worst…anything is possible.

I do agree that Sing isn’t up to being HC. He is a leader of men but he doesn’t have it upstairs. We just need to keep him on as a “spiritual motivator” and get someone like Gruden.

Please let us slaughter those filthy Seahawks this weekend. We need big help from our D….I am talking PW returning INT for TD’s.

Agreed, secondary is where we should concentrate. Although I think Clements is having a hell of a year – Green Bay game withstanding. O line is coming around, A Davis at tackle has some very costly mistakes, but he’s a rookie playing one of the toughest positions on the field.

Well, for yards after the catch, Green Bay was just about as painful a game to watch as any I’ve seen. Not sure what happened there… For the most part, I’ve been happy with the way the defense swarms to the ball. Another CB and more experience or different personell at safety will help shore up this secondary. I’m getting worried about Justin Smith most of all. How many more years is he going to play. He is totally irreplaceable on the Dline. I fear that right when we have things just right, he’ll retire, and we’ll have a huge whole to try and fill.

@terry. A farce? The record isn’t good, but anyone who knows anything about football knows this team isn’t a farce. Again, look at our losses: 3pts to the world champs, 2 pts to the eagles, 3 pts to the falcons, and until the 3rd quarter, we were just a point down on Green Bay. Our bad losses have come from the hands of sub par teams, which can be indicitive of coaching staff, but to call them a farce is off the mark. Every team who sees the niners coming in to town know they have a tough game ahead of them. Look beyond the record. I don’t have any problems with the ownership. They seem committed to the team and the fans to me. They’ve built a talented team that has, to this date, under-performed. Give it and them some more time to see how this shakes out.

I think with the right OC Alex Smith could be a great QB. Joe Montana wasn’t the best or greatest until Bill Walsh worked with him. Alex needs a real good teacher to show him how to move in the pocket. And someone with the right system to fit his abilities. Don’t blame Alex for all of this. The defense wasn’t playing that great all year to give up so many points. The corners we have now are mediocre. We got top notch linebackers, how about top notch corners. Clements sucks. He always gets beat. The Niners have so much talent, but there’s no one there to show them how to use it. Alex Smith I hope you can prove them all wrong. GO Niners.

“He also spoke of Smith’s experiences in the offensive system throughout training camp and the first seven games of the regular season where he led the 49ers to a 1-6 record.” HA HA HA,

I keep hearing about how Alex smith is the best choice for QB. We’re talking about the guy who has been around for 6 seasons, and still has yet to show us anything at all. I have not seen any greatness from Alex Smith, only mediocrity. Now Troy smith showed us a spark and hasn’t done too bad considering he is a 3rd string, 2 yr who had not played a whole lot in the league before he started with us against the broncs. I’d say he has done a hell of a job. we have seen the best that A Smith has and its not even close to good enough. He failed against some big teams, who cares, he failed! 1-6 with him! last year 8-8. He had us wanting shaun hill, another mediocre QB, worse than ever! Maybe T. Smith has hit a plateau but even then his plateau is higher than A smiths peak! Fire Singletary! let go of A smith and lets start getting ready for next year!

This was gonna be “the year” because he had time with this OC or whatever. He’s more mature blah blah blah. 0-5 start speaks for itself. Then people talk about him developing and making strides. Strides toward what??? a winning season the year before he retires???? Its the the point where I’d rather watch troy smith lose than alex win. I don’t want there to be any chance of alex coming back next year. We want playofffs and a superbowl. With alex all we can hope for is to maybe finish at .500

49ers fans cmon! The bottom line is we need a quarterback. Coach Singletary is doing the best with what he has. I think we are predictable as an offense and with Seattle having former players like mike robinson, jeff ulbrich, and kentwaan balmer, we are that much more predictable. I always felt like we used Frank Gore to much, now he is done for the season. If we want to keep Gore for a long time we had better find a one-two punch. I think Coach Singletary has done a great job, he was very loyal to Alex Smith and that will probably cost him his job, but who does not want to have a coach that will defend you to the end. Truthfully, Alex has always been in a bad situation and Coach Singletary knew this. That is why Alex has been given every opportunity to lead this team. That is why coach Johnson was namer the OC, has fans all we see is Sunday, but these coaches work with players on a daily basis and they see the little things we don’t see. This team has been through some adversity this year. FIrst Glen Coffee retires prematurely, then Kentwaan Balmer quits the team, then Mike Lewis quits the team, next we fire coach raye, then ALex gets hurt, then Joe Staley, Eric Heitman, then the heart and soul of the team Frank Gore, on top of that we are a young team. This will only make the 49ers better. Where is the loyalty? Maybe the 49ers fans have lost it like just like everybody else in society.

First of all those who truly believe that Alex Smith will be a succesfull QB in the NFL are as blind as Mike Singletary. This indiot can’t play under center his 3 step drop is more like a1 step. He does not look off defenders. Can’t step up on the pocket. His mobility skills truly overated.I have yet to see the guy get out of trouble and make a big play down field. He lacks football smarts period.

Sf4t9er…….exactly. If everything does not go exactly as planned alex is in trouble. Every time he stepped out of the pocket he either threw it away or threw an interception. That is why troy smith was such a breath of fresh air to watch. He stepped out of the pocket and actually made some plays. Granted he wasn’t the best qb either, he was still better than alex and after only 5 games. When did alex ever throw for 356 yards.

  175. By temper on Dec 7, 2010 | Reply

    @PAniners and Mario.

Most, not all, but most 1st round draft pics are given time to learn the system, adjust to the NFL speed, etc. Alex wasn’t. He was thrown in day 1 with absolutely no support around him or direction from the staff. That’s like buying a brand new sports car and handing the keys over to a 16 year old kid with a drivers permit. Alex was trashed the same way the car would be. He’s been battling injury caused from the abuse he received those early years. He’s had a new playbook to learn on the weeks that he’s been healthy and absolutely no confidence from the fans who are supposed to support him. To say he’s had 6 years with no results is just naive and narrow-sighted. The record is bad, you feel bad so you want to fire the QB and the coach. Very original.

  176. By PAniners on Dec 7, 2010 | Reply

Yea, time to develop is one or two years and then be competitive in the 3rd year. There has been absolutely no progress. Look at Ben Rothlisburger, or even like I said, Sam Bradford. And it has nothing to do with the playbook or being thrown into different systems. He knows the plays. He’s just very inaccurate and is unable to make plays outside the pocket. He has no instincts ans struggles with the fundamentals of the game. It would be different if there were a few games where he put up lots of yards and points but that has never happened……ever.

Alex threw for 309 yards against a much better Eagles defense. Troy Smith stepped out of the pocket and got very lucky on a couple of balls that never should have been thrown. Nothing against Troy, I’m thankful for the work that he did, but you can’t criticize Alex for throwing too many picks and then criticize him again for throwing the ball away if there isn’t a play to be had. If it’s not there you throw it away, that’s what smart QB’s do… and Alex is as smart a QB as they come.

I’m boycotting the NINER management not my players because they don’t how to run a business. People this is business and they should not take it personally. if a player or coach can not muster you must take the next guys waiting in line give them a shot. you must move forward not backwards. this is business, they all get paid millions. you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure this out. come on wake up!!!!!

WOW im such a die hard NINER fan its so painful to watch the offense with Alex. Everytime he throws the ball u hold your breath hoping it will not get piked off from being overthrown. Troy brings so much to the offense for big plays with his mobility and arm strength. so what he lost to the pack our defense gave that game up talk to our secondary bout that horrible display of tackling and coverage. and he 3-2 as a starter Alex 1-6 WTF is wrong with Singletary!!!!!!! leave TROY PLEASE!!!!! if anything i like Mike as a motivater and he is a great person but i dont think his 80z style football is working out in the bay area he needs to be a defensive cord……the damn Raiders are doing better LOL….. thats SICK

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. So a few quick questions:

How many years has Alex Smith been a starting QB for the 9ers?
    Answer: 5

In those 5 years how many times have the 9ers made the playoffs or had a winning record?
    Answer: 0 (4-12, 7-9, 5-11,8-8 currently 4-8 [1-6 under smith])

How many Touchdowns to Ints has he thrown in his career?
    Answer: 46TD’s 52 Ints

Anyway you slice it this guy is a loser (in any category). So as I was saying:

Insanity (Mike Singletary) = Expectations (winning) + Alex Smith (loser)

  209. By 49ermarc on Dec 7, 2010 | Reply

I liked troy, but he does not have the experience to carry the niners all the way. I wanted Alex to start against the pack, because of the little rivalry, but it did not happen. Troy was horrible against greenbay that is it.

Good call sing troy was going down hill. I hope alex learned something from troy thats all. Alex is our best QB, and his accurate with the ball. The bottomline is, we need an experienced QB now for the seahawks.

I will cheering strong for my niners (the players) every game they play this year and hope all niner fans will too. Next year there has to be a change in coaching, because they are all horrible and every niner fan knows it! Its is just ROOKIE coaching! and Fuktarded Management!!!!

Alex Smith? Incredible. It is time for a new coach, quarterback, and ownership. I find it hard to believe what is happening in this organization. Anyone who is a coach or has coached at any level can clearly see incompetence in the way players are being used, games are managed and game day preparation. We need an established coach and staff that will manage players and game-time decisions in a logical fashion. And the “stick” experience is worse than any professional venue. We hold season tickets and are constantly annoyed by the conduct in the parking lot, cleanliness of restrooms, stadium announcers, and general degenerate condition of the stadium. As fans, we expect more from the organization. Are the York’s up to the challenge?

I’ll have to look at the film, but from what I remember Nate Davis did a pretty good job until Sing threw him under the bus claiming the guy had A D D or something. If he does have a hard time with things, get him some help. He’s got a lot of natural talent. Remember when Steve Young used to run in circles and then over throw his man? It takes time to develop. The Niners have a lot of Hall of Famers to draw from, swallow your Pride, admit this is not workingg and ask them for help, some pointers, anything.

I admit that I was fooled by Singletary when he became the coach of my beloved 49ers whom I have followed faithfully for 30 years, but I was already losing faith in him this season until he finally went with the best QB that the 49ers have on the roster (Troy Smith). I thought that I read this article wrong when I saw that the BIGGEST JACKA$$ and FRAUD that this team has ever had at QB is back in to ruin the team some more. We all know that Alex will come in and look good for just long enough to fool Singletary into thinking he is a QB, and then BAM!! Back to the Alex that we all know followed with week to week excuses. Singletary…….. YOU ARE A JOKE, RETARDED, AND AN IDIOT!! and I hope to god that you are fired after this season along with Alex!!!! alex is better than troy. that last game proves that he can’t throw out of the pocket with accurately.and the couple of wins hes got were on blown plays by cheesy defenses Alex was improving with the new cordinator. but a proven coaching staff and a cordinators with some imagination would help.THE PROBLEM I SEEN IS THERE IS NO GAME PLAN, THERE IS NO ON-THE-FLY ADJUSTMENTS. at least when mooch had the team they could pile on the points. the line blocked pretty good (against gb) but the guy still can’t get the ball out. that was the worst defensive showing since game one.

If he goes 1-3, then he’s probably out next year and so is Singletary. If he goes 3-1, he just might save his job and Singletary is the one that gets canned. I think our problems are more than just one position as you know. So in any case. I don’t look at A. Smith to be our savior, I hope he is, for that matter I hoped T. Smith was. To me, this change just proves how dysfuntional we are right now. I think either QB with a stable coach/mentor, Sean Peyton D. Brees, P. Manning and their long time O/C, Vick or Kolb and Andy Ried, T. Brady/Belecheck, etc., etc., etc., and yes When Norv Turner was here with A. Smith.

We could go on and on, plyers need good mentors but I don’t look to see Alex win out with this team, perhaps 2 games.

I will agree and disagree. i think Alex does have the physical ability to win but he does not have the confidence to throw the long ball or the heart to motivate. unfortunately those are things you cant teach. Troy has heart and is not afraid to try big plays. Troy is responsible for our top 10 plays in yards gained, he throws long, runs makes mistakes and gets right back in there. you can learn techniques once you have heart but not the other way around. Troy isn’t going to walk on water and take us to the super bowl but i think he is the best starting point for a quality QB we have had since Steve Young. let him learn on the field so he has the chance to be great. 3-2 with no off-season and a cold start, not too bad! how long did it take Alex to win 3 when he came on board?

im just wondering how all of you guys are planning on having a dynasty qb next year. if there is any chance of a dynasty qb in sf next year it is going to have to be Alex. Yes i said that. The only qb that is in the league that has any shot at making it that will be available is Kevin Kolb and he lost his job twice this year. Sure Vick has played great, but had Kolb not struggled Vick would still be throwing the ball twice a game and running a couple zone reads. This is on a team full of weapons for a qb so Kolb is not the answer. Then you look at the draft. The closest to ready is Andrew Luck and im guessing that no matter how bad we pllay the rest of the year that Arizona will get him killied by starting him in week one next year. Then you look at Locker. How did he look in a big game? Take his effort against Nebraska. Bad decision making and un accurate. The 9ers can find those abilities within the system. Then there is Mallet who i think has the most potential. Let me be clear on that last word. POTENTIAL . He is three to four years from ready and will fall early in the draft. I like all other 9er fans want to win now. Are we willing to watch Alex for a couple more years to let Mallet pan out? Last is Cma Newton. Sure he would be a dynamic player, but we can only run a wildcat formation so many times because he is a Pat White type Qb and he is not going to lead a team drive after drive. I think we have got to get behind Alex and let him work his problems out and see if he can ever pan out. There are no better options out there.

Are some of you real niner fans or just pretenders. If you put Alex Smith in a Spread offence he is great. The team has been making a lot of penalties early and mid way through the season that is what has been costing games. What has troy done but been incosistant watch past games Alex and Troy both have issues. Get a coach that can adjust to a players style not a coach that wants a player to adjust to his it never works.

I think we as fans need to chant that, so he may come out of whatever he is in and show his fans(if he has any) different! He needs to take chances and believe in those fantastic recievers we have also. Westbrook can catch, lets not forget that! and we need to quit playing catch-up football and ram it down seattle’s throat and don’t look back. Clearly our running game is different without Gore! However, if Westbrook can shake the thought of being hit off, and run the damm footballwe will win out the season and hopefully our first playoff game will be in SAN FRAN!!!!!!

Hey Singletary! What if we lose? Are you going to flip flop QB’s again? Stay with won so that he can get better and know the team! I think so far this year T. Smith should at least finish the year. He may have not gone to the camp, but thats not his fault. There lies the problem with management! everyone just attend, look what happened and now you want to pull him because we lost. Remember coaches are like QB’s, they can be replaced too!!

The one good thing to come from re-instating Alex Smith is that it will help to guarantee us the No.1 pick in next year’s draft !! – Not that that will help us in any way – wasn’t Smith a No.1? Still, hopefully it will also guarantee the departure of Mike Singletary !!

The only reason that troy smith kept starting was because he beat winless teams, and cuz he was winning Alexs loses werent all him) us fans wanted him, but the truth alex is better, if he hadnt got injured we would probably be in a better position..singltary knew if he had gone with alex as soon as he was healthy fans would go crazy, but smith is capapble, this is his LAST CHANCE get us to an 8-8 record no losses and without gore and gut us in the playoffs and make some noise in the playoffs..hmm can alex smith do this?? we shll see

four more games and sing gets canned and we can
either get gruden or holmgren and get back to what
made the 49ers,the west coast offense. maybe we
can get mcnabb if washington decides to let him go
and then draft qb like mallet won’t get luck unless
we trade up in 11 draft.

That’s all !!

Ive been a 49er fan for 30+ years and as others have said Alex Smith is not the dynasty QB for us. Maybe in a different offensive scheme somewhere else. I recently read a poll of the top 20 draft busts in NFL history and Alex was ranked number 3 just under Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell. A lot of changes have needed to come for quite some time. We need to make smarter draft choices and trades. Its essential to continue building a stronger line on both sides of the ball. We have some awesome players both veterans and rookies. Alex has had more than enough time to prove himself and just cant consistently get the job done. Is Troy Smith the answer? Maybe, maybe not. Hes definitely more athletic and mobile. I just want to see my NINERS have a winning season. Its been too long! Change needs to occur. Santa all I want for Christmas is some wins in the 49er column:-)

Alex Smith will never be the answer! He always plays just good enough to lose. There are several teams out there in need of a QB. Have we tried to trade Alex? I don’t know if it’s possible but maybe some team with a really bad record would want him. If we could pick up their #1 draft choice??? Well I can dream. That wat Troy can be #1 for now while we groom who ever we draft. We are done this year!

everyone who thinks this is the wrong move. just take a look at the games alex and troy played alex has played the saints, eagels, atl, and the lost to the saints by 3 in that windy game go look at the stats smith had a better game then brees the philly game walker fumbold 2 times in the red zone and they lost by 3. and the alt game matt ryen had that pick at the end of the game then are cb fumbold the ball then they went down and kicked a fg to win by 2. now troy lost to bucs by 21 and lost to the pack by what 17 now who is better

All you “Alex Sucks” people, read the above again and again… We don’t even know what we have with Alex really… he’s been the victim of bad circumstance since since he’s been here. Maybe he doesn’t have it, but no one can be sure if you really look at the games… all you see is the record… watch the games!!! These losses are not all on his shoulders, not even close.

Guys, Troy Smith is not a good quarterback, why do you think that Baltimore went out in the draft and took a chance on Joe Flacco. I know that Alex Smith is not the greatest, but when we play to his strengths he gives us the best chance to win right now. Lets just hope we end this year off on a good note and acquire a good QB in a trade or in the draft, even though there are not any good ones out there. Go 9ers.

just wanted to say no body is jumping on the bandwagon of troy smith. out of the 49ers quarters backs right now he gives us the best chance to win. anybody can claim that alex smith played better teams but lets not forgot all the better teams we played with alex we lost. the only team alex beat was the raiders and that was becaus of our defense not because of alex. troy smith didnt go through training camp and he was third string how many recievers on our team have any reps with this guy is troy smith the answer no but he gives us a a lot better chance to win with the quarters back we have. i cant wait till singletary is done in sf and done bringing this talented team down. also all i have to say why is nate davis on the practiice squad and david carr is on the roster.

  293. By eric lobao on Dec 8, 2010 | Reply

also i wanted to say is that for the longest time ive been a alex smith supporter. the only times ive seen alex smith be great is last year when we ran the spread offense. singletary wants to be a running team and being in shotgun would be harder for frank gore but i trust frank gore to over come being in the position then alex smith if alex smith is going to be our quarterback then they need to put him in a spot where hes comfortable in the spread offense. i said in my last comment that troy gives us the best chance to win but i forgot to tell why and its because he doesnt make the mistakes alex does. i would say this if our defense was like pitsburg or baltimore one of the top defenses i would say alex is our best quarterback because then our defense can overcome his mistakes but our defense isnt there yet. thats why troy would give us the best chance to win by not making the mistakes alex makes

All quarterbacks even Payton Manning had a rough first year. Alex on the other hand has been around several years and has had enough chances we have to move on. Yes he does have a tough job but so does every other quarterback in the NFL. I have been a 49ers fan since I was 5 and I’m 36 now and starting to question my loyalty to them. I just don’t get it. Well as far as i’m concerned the season ended for me when Alex was named quarterback. So see ya next year.

Since Coach Singletary has taken over as the head coach of the 49ers, I have not had a more gut wrenching, disappointing time watching my 49ers. I have said before and will go to the grave believing Coach Singletary has more heart, Character and Guts than anyone in the NFL. However he coaches like a middle linebacker. It’s great for defense but is a disaster for the offense. The 49ers try and play football like Lombardi’s packers. Very simple, execute and zero finesse. It’s as if the great 49ers offensive teams of the 80s never existed. Bill Walsh invented the west coast offense. Joe Montana(the greatest QB that ever played) played it like a fine instrument on the way to 4 super bowl victories. When I compare the the two 49er offenses it’s enough to make you weep.

“Alex is a BORN LOSER”… ? Selected 1st round in the NFL and he is a “BORN LOSER”? Statements like that make you lose credibility on anything else you might have to say. It shows that you are speaking and thinking from emotion and not being rational. You don’t like him becuase you think wins and losses are soley on the shoulders of the QB. If that’s the case, then just take the rest of the players off the field and football will just become a QB shoot out. So to answer your question, “should I say some more”, no – please don’t. Not if all you have is, Alex is a born loser without anything but your anger to back the statement up.

I can make a better call than those coaches. it’s really SAD to see an explosive players be wasted because of coaching job and having QB (Alex) throwing interception in a crucial game.

If I were Singletary, I’d have Alex Smith call his own plays and run the spread as often as he wants.

I’d go shotgun formation 80% of the time.

I’d throw Ziegler in there and see what he can do.

I’d run two TE sets and have Delanie and Vernon run out posts all day while Crabtree and Morgan run underneath cross routes.

Last option would be to have westbrook out in the flats or dump off screens to Brian if there is nothing downfield. I’d also run draw plays for Dixon out of the shotgun.

Dude I swear, I’m way more creative than anyone on this staff and I never even played college football.

Hey Mike, I know the defence lost us 3 pivital games (NO, PHI, ATL), those were top tier 3 teams, Alex did his part but where did you do yours? Troy Smith aint gunna save your behind this time. Please do something for a change and stay with the spread offense where Alex was actually doing good with. Listen I hope Gruden takes you out.

Urban Meyer resigns from Florida. I’ll bet he’s NFL bound, either Denver, Dallas, Oakland, or Ninerland. I bet Alex goes with him so everyone RELAXXXXX.

I’d take him, but I think I’d rather have Harbaugh over him.

I laso think before any new coached or players, we need as Eddie D recently said. “The Niners need a good Football Man in the Organization.” Well said and I’m on board with that.

Having said that I’d like to see the Niners win out with Alex, just for his sake because of =ALL of the Negative things that this kid has had to put up with. That also being said—-He’s been paid well for all of the BS too!!!!!LOL!!!!!

First I want to say Alex Smith is HORRIBLE! Not that I could do any better, but if you’re going to throw that many interceptions you should stay on the bench. Troy is not much better. Say what you want about not having time to learn the offense, he is an NFL QB and that is his job!
Our secondary sucks! Look how many big plays they gave up to the Packers! We can’t stop people when it counts and that’s why we lose the close games.
Singletary is not the best coach in the world, but he is what we have for now. I would love to see him as DC and move someone else into the HC, but that is the Yorks job and they have not done their job since buying the team.
It’s been a rough 8 years since we last made the playoffs and it might be a few more, but those of you who say you are jumping the bandwagon were never fans in the first place. A TRUE fan sticks with their team at ALL times!!!!

Oh and another thing Ninerforlive–if you go stricly by the numbers, then T. smith should not be playing especially when you look at what he has done against winning teams, and NO he isn’t better than Alex.

Did you know that T. Smith has been sacked 16 times in only 5 games, WOW and he’s thrown a ration of Int’s close to alex’s but they wer akll T. Smith’s fault, not the wideouts, WOW again?

Let’s face it, we need more than help at the QB position and yes Alex will be gone next year and please sit T. smith down as second or third team. Rid ourselves of N. Davis and get a new coaching staff, PERIOD.

    Your direct quote here says

“Our secondary sucks! Look how many big plays they gave up to the Packers! We can’t stop people when it counts and that’s why we lose the close games”

So which is it, A. Smith or the Defense, you can’t have both.

I’d blame the Staff, the entire team, and an infantcy Ownership but it ain’t ONE GUY.

You are as frustrated as we all are. Let’s see them pull the Bunny out of their hat, we have no choice at this point and I ain’t jumping off the wagon. I am a NINER FAN FOR LIFE as well.

how sad, I’ve been a Niner fan since I was a kid and this truly is dissapointing, It’s time for Singletary and A.Smith to go, T.Smith is a young 3rd string QB who was tossed in the spotlight, he isn’t the best but a better option than A.Smith, on another note Niners need to pick up Kevin Kolb.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I cant believe that Alex will be starting………..again! Was the beginning of the season not enough torture for us fans!!! Our coach is sooooo predictable (give him the boot already). I see this as one last chance to save his job. If Alex does well (Yeah right!), then people will say that Singletary had a eye for talent and he saw in Alex what nobody else did. Give me a break! They both have to go!!!!!!!

As for those people who are looking for a reason for Alex’s poor performance. News Flash…… It doesn’t matter how many offensive coaches you have had because a good quarterback understands at least the basics (FLAG – - -Delay of game!) If he isnt going to get some darn points on the board, he can at least watch the darn clock!

    The season is over!!!!

KDB FANBOY or is that Alex Smith lol

Well I believe 49er nation have spoken. 98% of the comments want Alex Smith run out of town along with Singletary. Let alone Alex’s poor wins vs loses record, plain a simple, he is not clutch and has a very hard time at the end of games trying to drive 80 yards to win a game. Most of the time he throws a int or fumbles or is sacked. The few wins Alex dose have under his belt were only because of a outstanding defensive games. Alex shows no fire on or off the field. Ever notice how he hangs his head low during interviews, or before games he is sitting alone on the bench with only coaches talking to him. If I was a player I would want out of the 49ers with what I seen from Alex over the 5 years .No leadership abilities or big come backs in that guy. Management needs to suck it up and realize they blew that draft pick big time. KGB you really think Alex Smith will win a super bowl for the niners someday,if you do then its time to put down that pipe man and come back to reality.

In my opinion Alex Smith is a huge bust and no better then a back up for any team he plays for. You win some and you lose some Hey Alex do something good with all that money you got and give it to charity, at least I would respect that!

To think we could have had Arron Rodgers ….sigh

Alex is a legit qb. The game planning has been terrible. With a qb like Alex you need to open up the offense and let the guy work. Coaches are always trying to contain him and run all this short stuff. They opened it up to troy. I hear sing saying lets keep them out of harms way. They are nfl football players taks off the handcuffs and let these guys play. Alex smith is extremely successfull late in games and in two min drill before half why? beacuase he is calling the plays spreads the d out and makes things happen. just like last week with troy niner score down one force gb to punt. we get ball with 1 min left two timeouts. sing runs the clock out because he doesnt trust his qb to make plays. unless they let these nfl players play football they will never be good thanks to coaches. go back and look at hightlights of alex when he is running in out of shotgun and calling the plays… It’s not alex. troy couldn have won any of those first 5 games either. with alex we lost to saints by 3, atl, bye 2(nate fumble) phi beat oak and were in position to beat carolina untill alex went down alex threw for 6 tds and 2 ints in last 2.5 start before getting hurt.

  367. By ninersince83 on Dec 10, 2010 | Reply

Alex I believe you will lead the 49ers to victory this week. open it up and let the ball go.. shut all these hating 49ers fans up. We need you to step up and be a leader now even if that means calling audibles that you feel works dont be afraid to take over game and play calling and you will be succesful. Sing let the guy play football.. he was drafted high beacuase of how succesfull he was in college. he good because they spread offense and let him make plays. you can’t take a guy that was good at one thing and try and make him to something opposite. lets stop playing safe and just go have fun and play some football.. we have westbrook, crabtree, davis, walker, and morgan let these guys make plays. lets smash seattle and finish at 8-8

I’m a do or die Niner fan, but Alex Smith we can do without. I about choked when I heard that he was starting the weekend! I know they spent a lot of money on him, but give me a break, enough is enough. When I say him suited up last game, it gave me a knot in my stomach…..True, Troy has a long way to go, but he seemed to have a lot of respect from the other players, and Alex sure doesn’t have that….I think the coaching staff just needs to let Troy play his game and have a little more confidence…..
As far as Singletary goes, I was really excited when he first came aboard, but he has been a sad disappointment, but I am fearful of another change. But if it has to be it has to be….
Whatever we say it’s not going to make them change their mind, but we sure are going to need a lot of prayers with him back on the playing field!!!

Nothing, not a thing but bring the team down. I love SIngletary too but I think his time is done too.

Anyone who whatched the first 7 games and the last five have seen that troy is a much better QB………I love the niners dont get me wrong but come on mike!!!!!! Alex has had long enough to prove to the fans that he is a winner and 1-6 is not showing that at all……..I am hopping for us to win which would be nice and we definately need it but if we lose maybe the organization should concider losing Mike too!!!!!!! lets go niners!!!!!!!

I’ve always been an Aaron rodgers fan, i wanted him bad but even he would have had BIG League problems with this organization. when Iplayed, yes that’s right boyZZZZZ it was always about the organization, period.

So I could care less what a few folks think that’s why opionons some solid some not, are good to air out.

My point with A. smith is, he’s the best we’ve got, period, hands down, undisputed blah blah blah. Like it or not, that’s the way it is. T. Smith is at best a back up. Carr is weak and Nate Davis needs to be selling insurance.

As I have said all along. we need a football man in the GM spot. An entire new coaching staff, and then a few players, period.

I have a paycheck from the NFL, do you?

In my opinon the entire ring around the rosey coaching scenario over the last 7 yrs has been a complete bust there by making it diificult on any player to optimize their potential, especially the QB position. Facts, not excuses just like Gruden and J. Johnson and MANY top coaches and coordinators that UNDERSTAND the game have all pointed out.

    GO NINERS.

  375. By UpLateAgain on Dec 12, 2010 | Reply

They ought to platoon them. Troy to get them down the field, and Alex in the Red Zone. Sure, neither one will ever get “hot”, but that presupposes one of them would anyway. I gotta think, if Troy had anywhere near the snaps that Alex has had, there wouldn’t be a question of who starts. Despite his paucity of real NFL reps by comparison, and Alex’s vastly greater familiarity with the Niner system, Troy has three times as many wins. So start Alex. Makes sense.

What makes it all sadder is Alex will probably get pulled again…. but not until he has the team so far behind, Montana and Rice at their peak couldn’t have brought it back.

Let’s see… game plan… When Alex is in there, run the ball twice up the gut for a total two yard gain, throw a slant that misses the receiver by six feet, then punt. When Troy’s in there, run the ball twice up the gut, throw a screen that the receiver drops or take the sack (at least there’s an option there), then punt. It will be tough to remember, but I think I got it.

All the national commentators have effectively eliminated the Niners from any playoff hopes. Actually, If they win their three remaining division games (i.e., 3 of the next 4), they’ve got probably at least a 50-50 chance, because Seattle and St. Louis still have at least two games each against competent teams, THAT THEY BOTH OUGHT TO LOSE. The Rams should lose to New Orleans and Kansas City, and The Seahawks should lose to Atlanta and Tampa bay. And, of course, the season finale between St. Louis and Seattle would (in the case of SF winning their division games) have one of those teams eliminating the other.

If they do lose those games against contending teams, and SF does run the table within the division, the Niners win the division on tie breakers (having beaten the Rams twice and having a 5-1 inter-division record compared to what would be Seattle’s 4-2 or 3-3 division record).

Oh wait…….. I see why they’ve eliminated the Niners. They heard Alex Smith was starting today’s game.

    Never mind.

Called it on here 12/09.. alex smith would rip seattle d and we would blow out seattle.. alex is a legit number one qb their first 5 games may have be the toughest in the nfl and alex had us in all but two of the games.. He has played the best teams in the nfl this and competed he had atl beat all but a nate fumble…. he beat the raiders and the seahawks we will win our last div game easily.. if we go 7-9 we may win div due to seattle and rams sched. if we beat sd.its a lock we will win div at 8-8.. lets go niners.. imagine if gore was back.. this is a good team and they will make noise in playoffs if the can sneak in.. if they finsih-8-8 that means they finished season 8-3 after being 0-5. nobody will want to come and play sf in the first round!!!!

I’m no 49er hater…I just have lost all confidence in the decision making abilities of Singletary and company. Where was this Alex Smith the whole time? That is not how he played before…heck I think in this game he threw for more touchdowns than he did in the first five…further the Seahawks GAVE him every opportunity. How many turnovers five? six? With that many chances yea even A Smith could look good. This hasn’t proved anything except he can destroy a team with an injured QB and several of the best receivers injured. What will show me wrong and I will admit it on here is if he can win the rest of the games. I do not think he can.

Don’t worry all you long time fans of the 49 ers, I believe the owner will get us back on tract with a new coach who can come out of a time out without getting a delay of game penalty or one of the many MS game management highlights with a coach who cut his teeth under a fairly successful HC, Bill Walsh. Switching QB’s is a sign of loosing control of the team and being in over your head at this point, Please look at the QB from boise state he will be a steal in this draft
