The 49ers are in the middle of a long road trip, playing the Carolina Panthers today before leaving for London after the game. After the Giants won last night and punched their ticket to the World Series, the 49ers will look to follow suit today. As Giants closer Brian Wilson would say…”FACT.”
Stay tuned to this blog throughout the game for updates from the game.

The Panthers won the coin toss and elected to receive. They had a good kickoff return to start the game, taking it out to the 35. DeAngelo Williams had a good run on 2nd down, getting the first down at the 45. The 49ers defense didn’t allow any more first downs on the drive as Matt Moore’s 3rd down pass for Steve Smith was well over his head. Ted Ginn fielded the punt and spun back to the right side of the field out to the 26.
Frank Gore got the carry on 2nd down and picked up 20 right up the middle. Alex Smith faked the handoff on the next play and hit Vernon Davis in stride as he beat his defender. The play gained 53 yards as Davis was hauled down at the 1. On the next play, Smith faked the handoff and rolled right and found Davis wide open for the score.
49ers 7 – Panthers 0

49ers 7 – Panthers 3
Gore had a nice run on 2nd down, picking up 6 as he cut up the right side of the line. On 3rd and 2, Gore got the carry once again and had enough running room up the middle for 3 yards. On the next 2nd down, Smith hit Gore on a screen pass for a gain of 10. On 3rd and 2, Smith hit Michael Crabtree on a quick out for a gain of 3. Gore had a good gain on 2nd down as he followed Joe Staley for a gain of 6 up the middle. The Panthers had good coverage on 3rd down and Smith had to throw it away. Steve Smith muffed the punt, but was able to recover it at the 15.
Standout Stat: Alex Smith had a QB rating of 129.2 in the first quarter.
Highlight Reel: Smith and the 49ers offense showed some aggressiveness on the opening drive as Smith hit Davis foe 53 yards.
Put it in Perspective: The 49ers played well to start the game, but slowed a bit on their next drive. Mike Johnson has been taking more shots down the field as Smith connected with Davis for 53 yards. Smith also looked deep for Morgan on the 2nd drive, but the pass was just outside. The 49ers can widen the lead by getting off to a good start in the second quarter.
The 49ers defense held the Panthers as Goldson had a nice hit on Williams on 3rd down. Ginn fielded the punt and returned it to the 39.
The 49ers were backed up in a 3rd and 12 after a false start by Iupati. Smith looked for Ginn on the left sideline, but Ginne couldn’t make the grab. The Panthers had a nice punt return as they got it out to the 47.
Moore hit Gettis for a gain of 20 on 1st down. Nate Clements stripped the ball from Williams on the next play and Parys Haralson recovered it at the 44.

Nedney was good on the 24-yard field goal.
49ers 10 – Panthers 3
Moore hit Smith on a deep slant on the first play of the drive for a gain of 21. Taylor Mays was called for pass interference on 3rd down. The ball was about 10 yards long and looked to be uncatchable. Moore’s pass on the next 3rd down was incomplete intended for LaFell, but Will James was called for PI. Moore hit Smith on a quick pass to the right side for a gain of 7 on 2nd down. Moor hit Rosario on 3rd down for 4 yards and a first down. Moore hit Gettis for the touchdown as Nate Clements fell down on the play.
49ers 10 – Panthers 10
Gore got the carry to start the drive and picked up 7 up the middle. Following the two-minute warning, Smith hit Crabtree who broke a tackle and got out to the 45. Smith’s pass on the next 3rd down was incomplete intended for Gore. Lee’s punt sailed into the end zone for a touchback.
Moore moved the chains, hitting Gettis for the conversion on 3rd down. The Panthers called timeout with 42 seconds left in the half and the ball on their own 35. Nate Clements came on the blitz and sack Moore for a loss of 5. Carolina ran out the clock, giving the ball to Williams to end the half.
Standout Stat: Gore is averaging 6.4 yards per carry in the first half.
Highlight Reel: Nate Clements’ forced fumble against DeAngelo Williams was perfect and the 49ers got 3 points on the ensuing drive.
Put it in Perspective: The two PI penalties on the Panthers touchdown drive really hurt the 49ers. The 49ers looked to have stopped Carolina twice on the drive, but the two questionable calls extended the drive. Carolina capitalized with the score. The 49ers will get the ball to start the second half and a score to open the half would be huge.
Gore had a nice gain on 2nd down, but it was called back for holding. Smith was sacked on 2nd down at the 2. The training staff came on to look at Smith who was banged up on the play. David Carr came in at QB. Smith had a left shoulder injury and his return is questionable. Carr had Davis open on 3rd down, but was unable to complete the pass. Delanie had great coverage on the punt and brought down Smith at the 42.
Moore hit Rosarion on 2nd down to get enough for the first down. Williams picked up another first down on the drive with a short carry. The Panthers tried to set up a screen pass on 3rd and long, but the 49ers defense red it perfectly. Kasay came on and connected on a 55-yard field goal that would have been good from 60 to give Carolina the lead.
Panthers 13 – 49ers 10
The 49ers were called for a false start on the first play of the drive and they couldn’t recover. Carr’s pass was well over the head of Ginn on 3rd down. Walker had good coverage once again on the punt as he wrapped up Munnerlyn at the 28.
The 49ers brought the blitz on 3rd down, but Moore was able to get the ball away to LaFell for the first down. Smith dove at Spencer’s legs and then jumped on top of him after the play was over. Moore hit Smith on 3rd and long, but Spencer got his revenge stripping the ball and recovering it at the 41.

Gore cut up the field for 8 yards. Gore got the carry and gave it to Morgan for an end around that picked up enough for the first down. Gore continued to have a strong drive with another nice run up the middle, picking up 11. Carr was hit as he threw on 3rd down and that is the way the quarter came to an end.
Standout Stat: Gore has 14 carries for 97 yards.
Highlight Reel: It was great to see Spencer get revenge on Steve Smith after he dove at his legs. Spencer made a great play to not only strip Smith of the ball, but recover it as well.
Put it in Perspective: Nedney can tie things up at 13 with a field goal to start the fourth quarter. With Smith out, Carr has completed just one pass so far, a short out to Gore. Gore ran the ball very well on the last drive, but the 49ers will need to pass the ball with some success to leave Carolina with a win.
Nedney hit a 38-yard field goal to start the quarter and tie things up at 13.
49ers 13 – Panthers 13
Delanie Walker made another great special teams play, bringing down Goodson at the 11. On 3rd down, Moore threw the ball behind LaFell who spun and caught it to gain 15 yards. On 2nd down, Moore was pressured and threw the ball right to Ray McDonald. The defensive lineman made the grab, ran over Moore and followed two nice blocks for a 31-yard interception return. Just guessing, but I think that will make Sportscenter.
49ers 20 – Panthers 13
Walker made another tackle, bring down Goodson at the 17. Moore hit Rosario on a quick out to the right side for a first down at the 33. Moore’s pass on the next third down skipped low of his target. Ginn returned the punt to the 29.
Gore ran the ball three times on the drive and the 49ers go three and out. The Panthers were called for holding on the return and they’ll get the ball at the 44 with 8:24 remaining. Moore hit hit Gettis who beat Clements deep and was brought down at the 17. Moore hit Williams on a screen on 3rd down, but Willis read it perfectly for a loss of 5. Moore had Gettis wide open on 4th down, but the ball bounced right off his hands and the 49ers dodged a bullet.
