The praise just keeps coming in for Taylor Mays.
The 49ers rookie safety made his first career start Sunday at Atlanta, and a day after his coach and teammates lauded over his performance, the NFL did the same thing.
On Tuesday, Mays was named one of five candidates for Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week honors.
Now that Mays has been nominated, it’s up to the fans to help him win the award.
Fans can vote at NFL.com/rookies beginning Tuesday at 6 a.m. PT and the voting will end on Friday at 9 a.m. PT to determine the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week. The winner will be announced Friday evening at NFL.com/rookies.
Last Sunday Mays led the 49ers with a career-high 11 tackles, but it was his first NFL touchdown that made highlight reels across the country.
With the Falcons punting out of their own end zone, 49ers wide receiver Dominique Zeigler blocked a punt which sent the football straight into the air. Mays caught the ball in the back of the end zone and did a tremendous job of keeping both feet in-bounds.
“It was kind of like I was a receiver on the play,” he said.
The other finalists for the award are Rams quarterback Sam Bradford, Browns cornerback Joe Haden, Chargers running back Ryan Matthews and Titans cornerback AL Terraun Verner.
