Live Game Blog: 49ers at Falcons

Posted by Scott Kegley on October 3, 2010 – 8:24 AM

We arrived at the Georgia Dome which features a unique press box.  It features a spiral staircase in the center and is not enclosed from the stands.  That should make for a rather loud atmosphere!

This is also the first game for offensive coordinator Mike Johnson in his new role.  You can read our story on Johnson from this week and watch his first press conference.
Some of the players will also be wearing pink gloves and shoes during today’s game for breast cancer awareness.  A photo of one of the pairs of gloves is below.

Stay tuned for the inactives and our Teddy Football podcast.

Inactives:

49ers – QB Troy Smith (3rd QB), WR Ted Ginn, CB Tramaine Brock, CB Will James, T Barry Sims, C Eric Heitmann, T Alex Boone

Falcons – QB John Parker Wilson (3rd QB), CB Dominique Franks, RB Gartrell Johnson III, LB Sean Weatherspoon, T Garrett Reynolds, G Mike Johnson, DT Trey Lewis

Make sure to listen to this week’s edition of Teddy Football.  I spoke with Ted Robinson by the radio booth prior to kickoff.

You can also check out our photo gallery from the game.

FIRST QUARTER:

The 49ers kicked off to Eric Weems who returned it out to the 30-yard line.  The Falcons quickly moved the chains as Ryan dumped it off to Turner on 1st down and then found Finneran on a comeback just shy of midfield.  On 3rd and 4, Goldson made a great play, timing his hit on Harry Douglas perfectly.  Ryan would have had the first down on the slant pass, but Goldson broke it up and forced the punt.  Kyle Williams called for a fair catch at the 12.

On 3rd and 1, Alex Smith took the snap from the shotgun and hit Michael Crabtree on a quick slant for a gain of 14.  The 49ers had another 3rd and 1 situation and Mike Johnson dialed up a play action pass.  Smith threw deep for Delanie Walker who drew a pass interference penalty, giving the 49ers a first down at the 22.  The 49ers couldn’t convert on the next 3rd down as Smith hit Frank Gore on a screen pass.  The play was well executed as David Baas and Chilo Rachal made key blocks, but the ball was marked just an inch shy.  Smith dove forward on the QB sneak and the officials had to measure.  Smith got just enough on the play to get the 1st down.  Smith hit Vernon Davis on a screen to the right side and was ruled down at the 1.  Singletary challenged the call and from the replays it looked like Davis was never down as he reached the ball over the goal line.  The call was reversed, touchdown 49ers!  That was the 49ers first touchdown on an opening drive since 12/28/08.  Ted Robinson talked about getting off to a fast start in this week’s edition of Teddy Football.  Smith put together a nice drive, completing all six of his passes.

49ers 7 – Falcons 0

The Falcons were called for holding on the kickoff and were backed up to the 8.  On 3rd and 7, the 49ers pressured Ryan and forced a high throw to Douglas. The punt was blocked by Zeigler.  The ball popped high in the air and was caught by Taylor Mays, who barely got both toes in for the touchdown!  It was the 49ers first blocked punt for a touchdown since 1987.

49ers 14 – Falcons 0

Weems returned the kickoff out to the 29.  Ryan was sacked by Parys Haralson for a 5-yard loss on 1st down.  Ryan hit Turner who was able to avoid Nate Clements for a gain of 13 on 2nd down.  Jason Snelling plunged straight ahead to move the chains on 3rd down.  Ryan took a hit as he threw but found Roddy White for a gain of 20, down to the SF 36.  The quarter comes to a close as the Falcons have a 2nd and 1 from th 15.

Standout Stat: Alex Smith was 6 of 6 for 43 yards and a touchdown on the opening drive.

Highlight Reel: Zeigler’s blocked punt was definitely the play of the quarter.  Mays showed good awareness to stay in bounds and grab the ball for the score.

Put it in Perspective: With the Falcons threatening, the 49ers will try to force the field goal.  The 49ers got off to a fast start, but a 14 point lead isn’t safe against an explosive Falcons team. The defense has been on the field for quite a while so the offense will need to get momentum once again on their next drive.

SECOND QUARTER:

On 3rd and 5, Ryan found Douglas on the right sideline all alone and Douglas was able to get in for the score.

49ers 14 – Falcons 7

Kyle Williams was stopped at the 14-yard line on the kick return.  Smith rolled out and hit Josh Morgan crossing and picked up the first down.  The 49ers spread the field on 2nd down.  The Falcons brought pressure and Smith was sacked by Curtis Lofton.  Smith pitched the ball to Gore who got out to the 26, but was still well short of the sticks.  Weems broke a tackle on the punt return and got into 49ers territory.

Turner picked up 10 yards on the first play as he got around the right tackle. Tuner got the carry on the next play as well and had lots of running room right up the middle for a gain of 9 yards.  Ryan hit Tony Gonzalez on a quick slant for another first down on the drive and the Falcons are in the red zone.  Ryan threw for Gonzalez, but Spikes was able to tip the ball and Shawntae Spencer was in the right spot to pick it off.  The 49ers got the ball at their own 6.  That’s the first time Spencer has had interceptions in back to back games during his 7-year career.

Gore picked up 13 on first down as he bounced the run out to the left.  Smith hit Crabtree on a comeback to the left side.  Crabtree lowered his shoulder into Robinson for a gain of 15.  Smith hit Walker on a screen.  Walker got a good block by Crabtree for a gain of 6.  On 3rd and 4 from the 40, Smith tried to hit Morgan who slipped as he cut to the sideline. Weems fielded the punt around the 5 and returned it to the 17.

Bowman got into the backfield on the first play of the drive to bring down Turner for a loss of 2.  Ryan scrambled up the middle and was stopped for a gain of 1 by Franklin. Ryan hit Douglas on the cross, but the ball was knocked loose by Tarell Brown.  The punt rolled out of bounds at the 31.

Smith hit Crabtree on a comeback for a gain of 13 on the first play of the drive.  Gore gained 3 up the middle on the next play and the clock stopped for the two minute warning.  The Falcons blitzed and Smith hit Gore in open space for a gain of 19 – good block by Rachal on the play.  Smith was pressured and tried to hit Gore, but the pass was high and tipped off Gore’s hands, right to Curtis Lofton.

The Falcons got the ball at their own 33 and had all three timeouts remaining.  Ryan had a free play as Brooks jumped early and hit Douglas crossing for a 44-yard gain down to the 19.  Ryan scrambled and got out of bounds at the 10.  There is still 41 seconds left in the quarter.  On 3rd and 1, Franklin stopped Mughelli just short of the first down.  Atlanta went for it on 4th and inches.  Ryan picked up the first down on a QB sneak.  Ryan was pressured and tossed the ball to one of the offensive lineman.  The Falcons were called for illegal touching and intentional grounding.  They were penalized 10 yards.  Ryan took a shot for Roddy White in the end zone, but Spencer had perfect coverage.  Matt Bryant’s 37-yard field goal was good and that ended the half.

49ers 14 – Falcons 10

Standout Stat: The 49ers held the Falcons to 10 points on three trips to the red zone.  Spencer’s pick stopped one drive and the 49ers ended the half well, by holding the Falcons to a field goal.

Highlight Reel: The screen pass to Gore was well executed.  Rachal got down the field to make a nice block to spring him for a gain of 19.

Put it in Perspective: The first quarter was dominated by the 49ers early on.  They got out to a 14 point lead thanks to an opening drive touchdown and a blocked punt which Mays recovered for the score.  The Falcons came back in the second quarter though.  The interception on the 49ers last drive really hurt the 49ers as they could have at least picked up 3 points to end the half.  The defense was resilient however, holding the Falcons to 3.  The 49ers will get the ball to start the second half.  It’ll be important to re-establish their early momentum.

THIRD QUARTER:

Williams took a knee on the kick for a touchback.  On 3rd and 2, Smith looked for Gore on a quick slant.  The pass was incomplete but the Falcons were flagged for interference.  On 3rd and 5, Gore got the carry on the draw and picked up 6 yards up the middle.  Gore got the carry on the draw on 3rd and 6 and again picked up enough for the first down.  Smith was looking for Josh Morgan, but threw the ball right to William Moore.  The interception gave the Falcons the ball at the 46.

Turner got around the left side of the line and had all kinds of running room, gaining 27 down to the 27.  Haralson was flagged for a personal foul for pushing Tyson Clabo after the play.  On 3rd down, the secondary had good coverage and gave Travis LaBoy enough time to get to Ryan for the sack.  Bryant’s 31-yard field goal was good.

49ers 14 – Falcons 13

The 49ers started their next drive at the 20 after the touchback.  The 49ers couldn’t get anything going and went three and out.  Lee’s punt was downed at the 27.

On 3rd down, Ryan’s pass was behind Gonzalez as the 49ers defence forced the three and out.  Williams called for the fair catch at the 26.

Gore got the toss left on first down and picked up 4.  Smith stepped up and hit Crabtree on second down after he found a hole in the zone.  The draw play continues to work well for the 49ers as Gore picked up 7 up the middle on 2nd down.  Smith’s pass on third down for Morgan was batted down incomplete.  Weems signaled for the fair catch at the 12.

Manny Lawson jumped early as Turner got the carry up the middle.  That was the last play of the quarter.

Standout Stat: The Falcons have converted just 2 of 10 third downs.

Highlight Reel: Travis LaBoy brought down Matt Ryan on 3rd down to force the field goal.

Put it in Perspective: The 49ers offense has not scored since the first drive.  They need to string together a couple solid drives in the fourth quarter.  A one point lead against the Falcons is not safe.

FOURTH QUARTER:

Ryan hit Roddy White out to the 39.  Snelling got the carry on the next play and had good room to run and picked up 8 up the middle.  Snelling carried it once again and picked up the first down out past midfield.  Nate Clements made a great play on first down, flying in to trip up Turner for a loss of 6.  On 3rd and 7, Ryan hit Snelling over the middle, but Clements was right there to bring him down for a short gain and force the punt.  Williams called for the fair catch at the 8.

Smith’s pass to Crabtree down the right sideline was too high and incomplete.  Gore was stopped for no gain on 2nd down.  Smith checked down to Gore over the middle and Gore was able to break a tackle to get the first down.  The Falcons came with pressure on 2nd down and batted Smith’s pass at the line.  Smith stepped up and hit Morgan on a comeback to the left side of the field, gaining 10 yards and a first down.  On 3rd and 1, Anthony Dixon got the carry and broke a tackle to move the chains.  Smith hit Davis on a screen to the left side.  Davis hit full speed and picked up 15 yards down to the ATL 40.  Smith was called for intentional grounding on 3rd down which will back the 49ers out of field goal range.

With just 3:40 left, we have to run down to set up for postgame.  Follow us on Twitter for remaining updates.

Winning on the road has been hard for the 9ers. This will be a season defining game. I am sending positive mental vibes to exacute the game plan, finish the plays, and hold on to the ball. Lets also have a great defensive score. Go 9ers.

If the 49ers fall like they did lat week in the first quarter, Changing to Carr by halftime it will only be worse it should be before that. They beat us like 100 to what ever last year in SF, this year its in Atlanta and as I have seen them this year, They are much faster and stronger than they were last year. Mike, don’t wait till the half if you do 9er fan will start saying “WE NEED ANOTHER COACH!!!” AND if you don’t make that move I too will say that, As for me I will not see or go to the game the 49ers play till I hear smith is out. Sorry Smith lots of love to you but this is just not your system.

Having Alex Smith starting its already a loss…. (0-4) wake up Singletary you’ve got rid of one problem by firing Jimmy Raye, but there’s more than one problem if you want to win.

Need a win bad and I mean bad. Its going to be a tough day. Really need the defense to step up today.

I know our season didn’t start out good, but I too still have faith. Come on Niners. Singletary needs to keep his job.

  12. By Felicia on Oct 3, 2010 | Reply

We need a better quarterback. Smith needs to be a leader and he is not leading us anywhere. We are starting to look better on the defense and offense except Smith. He looks strong one quarter and then when he starts to choke he chokes BAD!!!

This game looked like the most difficult game of the early season while looking at the schedule before the start of play. It remains a difficult game but now is a must-win if the 49ers want to succeed this year. This is the one we need to pull up by the bootstraps and show what we are made of…. we need to DOMINATE, not just win. Can we do it? We have the talent. Will we do it? So goes the 49ers. With a loss it’s time to start planning next year and finding a real QB that defenses have to defend first in to make the type of running game Singletary wants to run work. If not out with him, too and start over from square one re-building.

The 49ers offense will score 4 Tds today. You will see that changing OCs was the best decision that should have been made a long time ago. It is what is now and that decision will pay off today- guaranteed.

As a fan since early 70’s I lived through the 2-14 , 10-6,etc seasons and so this team blossom into one of the winningnest organizations in football history.
We have to remember Bill Walsh did not come into this league winning super bowels. He was hired in 1978 to hopefully turn arouund the organization. he too was a nfl rookie coach. The difference between him and singletary are obvious, starting first with their individual philosophys on how the game should played. He was more of a offensive coach and he was able to surround himself with exceptional coaches and players. He seemed to have the respect of his players and was able to motivate his players by simply treating them as men as well as players. Therefore he ended up with players who would play hard for him week in and week out. Tough in your face coaches are not in fashion, especially now when players are making millions of dollars and more than the head coaches. I believe that we can provide this team with some real offensive leadership relatie to the offensive coordinator positon you are going to see a whole different team. Why, because now you have a younger creative person in one of most important coaching position. This is a young team, whichneeds a young/intelligent offfenswive coordinator. Hopefully he will be successful today and for the remaining of this season. We must get all our p0lay makers involved; crabtree, v.davis, j. morgan, d. walker, b.westbrook , f. gore, and a. dixon. Yes, anthony dixon who scored 3or 4 touchdowns i the preseasons. West Coast offense, this team is perfect for this offense. The biggest question pending, if this team goes 0-5 will the york family terminate the HC asap or will they ride the season with coach sing. I really hope sing can turn this team around. he is sincere about what he is trying to do, but he seems to be getting in his own way. He needs to be quiet and listen to others than can help him. Confer with other coaches or former players, bottom line did deep withi9n himself. Make the necessary changes whether it relates to personnel changes or self-evaluation. No coach goes into a season wanting to lose, so he needs to figure how to get this team to win. Above all he needs to listen to his players and his current coaches. Admit his shortcomings , try to learn from his mistakes. Hey he is a rookie coach in all sense of the term. He was going to and has made mistakes , just try to learn from each and everyone, something he has probably said to his 7 children, needs to adhere to his own advice.

wow, smith sucks and needs to go! I live in Buffalo and the bills finally dumped their crappy qb this week. the niners need a qb badly and also im sorry but singeltary is not the answer…all yelling and drill seargant like but sucks as a head coach. ive been a niners fan my whole life and this is really bad. Im rootin for 0-16, sorry but they need a qb and this season is done! sing may have to go also….we will see.

GO NINERS! We all know you not a 0-3 team or 0-4 team for that matter, take it to the falcons……good start so far, but got to keep it going…..continuity on offense, ball control, don’t get too conservative, keep it away from that falcon offense, and defense, c’mon….keep smacking those receivers in the mouth…..safeties got to tackle better…..let’s GOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I keep hearing how “smart” Smith is, but he has no common sense. Another 6 point swing. Then, on 3rd down he panics and throws the ball away instead of making another rookie mistake. Only problem is..he fails to see that Crabtree is wide open. He has to sit down.

this reminds me of last year with the Bills. they fired their O coordinator at the start of last year and went with their qb coach as the new guy…..it doesnt change anything…its the same playbook minus a few subtle changes. the O wont be any different until they hire a new coordinator next year. Singletary probably plays a big role in what kind of O they run and its obvious it is way to conservative. this is not 1985 mike…..u need to open some things up. riht now im watchin the bills on tv pissed cause they are gettin killed. i want them to win a few so the niners can get the #1 pick! come on baby…0-16!!!!

  112. By noel on Oct 3, 2010 | Reply

Alex looks like he wants to bomb it out in the open field but he’s hesitant I wonder if its his Sy-kee about throwng more INT’s or just good coverage…He needs to do something always chuckin out to gore isnt going to get it done, there gonna run him outta gas. I wish they would throw dixon or westbrook in there. C’mon NINERS its still early in the season you go 0-4 then it might be all down hill from there but I really hope not. LET PULL THIS OUT!!!!

  255. By David on Oct 3, 2010 | Reply

The head coach isn’t the problem its the qb and after this week if Alex Smith is behind center than maybe we do need a new coach. Alex Smith cost us too many game that interception and intentional grounding could have led to field goals. The coach can only do so much. We haven’t played that good in games we have won, besides the Alex Smith turnovers. Its time to turn the page on him we gave him his chance and we could have stuck with Shaun Hill if we’re gonna play like this at least he took care of the ball.

Yeh..14-4 season..as soon as it snows in Palm Springs on Labor Day. This team makes way too many mistakes to be a contender. Snake bit or what? A game winning interception by Nate and he goes hero on us and tries to run it in knowing someone has got to after a strip play. Brain dead. You sucked on that decision. This team will be 0-8 going into the bye week. Mayber we can get a coach that knows x’s and o’s and a draft pick like Luck from Stanford. Season is done. Fan since 1958 and I’m not a whiner, I am a realist. If you think this team is playoff bound..well…think again.

  311. By Bone on Oct 3, 2010 | Reply

The problem is Alex Smith. The guy cant produce. He gets stressed out to easy and makes crucial mistakes at the most inoportune times. Lets review shall we? Both times we were in position to kick a feild goal instead of keeping focused and at least getting us a feild goal he throws two interceptions. Now if you just relax and keep the ball in niner posession we have two feild goals and niners win 20 to sixteen or at least a ties and a chance to win in overtime. This one kills me as well. When you intercept a ball you have to be aware of what is going on around you. I mean your not running at full speed waiting for a blocker to open up the feild, you have to know someone will be coming from behind to make you fumble. Why not just fall down and give Alex smith another chance to throw an interception…just kidding, but for real at least another opportunity for a feild goal gone away. Come on NIners! You guys are better than this. Great game Defense you heal the most explosive offense in the NFL to 1 Touchdown that is an accomlishment.

It’s got a couple of major staff problems but Niners need to nut up and earn their paychecks to save themselves from the end of the season pink slips. Playoffs don’t matter anyway when your whole division is crap. They need to lock Alex Smith in San Q’ Prison for the season and release him on game day so he learns how to put up a fight.

Is it just me or hasn’t anyone noticed how inaccurate Smith is, how afraid he is to throw the ball downfield, or how he is complete inept in the leadership category???

When FRANK GORE, running back, is your leading receiver this season… this should say something about SMITH’s ineptness at the quarterback position.

It’s time to bring in NATE DAVIS. Not David Carr. NATE DAVIS. He is the only QB on our roster that can possibly build a camarederie with our “high profile” receivers because it is obvious MIKE CRABTREE is done with Smith.

At least there was some improvement this week.
Go 49ers. one step at a time.
you have to eat an elephant one bite at a time.

    Can anyone answer this question?

The coaches must see something in Alex, Just what is his strong point?
If there is something he does exceptionally well then please let him do it.
Maybe that is part of the problem, Maybe Alex is not being given the control he needs.
Then if he can’t succed it is time to move on.

I hope Mike S. isn’t trying to turn our team into the Bears of old.
Becaue old school won’t work in todays game. Those plays are being used in little league now to teach kids the the game.
If your going to look at film to come up with any answers please look at film from this decade.

Lets face it. We are cursed, really. We have talent on both sides of the ball, but the stupidest things happen EVERY TIME. I mean, the Detroit Lions could spot us 49 points and we would still find a way to lose 50-49. It’s like we go out of our way to give the game away. COME ON MAN! I expected Alex to throw a couple of goose eggs, nothing new there, but Nate? COME ON MAN! Nate has been in the league long enough to know when he “Slows down to wait on a block, that the other 11 players chasing him are NOT SLOWING DOWN BEHIND HIM!” Tuck the rock in your stomach and have a seat, we just won the game! BUT NO!!!! Like I said, we are cursed, I am sure Nate feels bad, I really don’t think it’s his fault. We could have Vince lombardi back from the grave coaching with an All Star staff and Montana at QB and it wouldn’t matter, WE AEW CURSED. God hates the 49ers! LOL I don’t know what else to do but laugh, I can’t take it anymore. Murphy’s law is tattooed on our butts. If I don’t find a way to laugh, I will make myself sick at the stomach, really, I’ve watched them for 29 years now. This 8-9 year stint has been painful and it just seems to get worse each year. This year was so promising, that I physically get sick at the stomach watching this, I have to laugh, don’t know what else to do.

Hey yall, another loss. WE HAD THE GAME–DAMN!!!!!!! Clements had the game in his hands!!!…Damn

There were some changes to the offense that needed to be addressed from the start of season. This ground and pound rushing isn’t going to happen without going to the air…and johnson knew that just like we all did–spread the field.

I hate to say it but A. Smith cost us the game today with turnovers–bottom line.

Yes everyone is tired of loosing, but some niner fans need to stop whinning–yall grow up! Right away…off with someone’s head mentality. Yes it sucks…but it is what is. New OC, players quiting, it does not matter, niners still need to work.

It will show up in the end and we will win the devision. We have too much talent not to go anywhere this season.

Hopefully, can gain some something from this loss. Hang in there niners…we will succeed.

I’ve sat here and read everyone’s comments. Agreed with some and disagreed with some. Overall, if coach Singletary goes with Alex Smith next week against the Eagles, he clearly doesn’t want to coach the 49ers anymore. He needs to bench him! He didn’t mind benching Shaun Hill last year and we actually won some games with Shaun. If Alex starts, Jed York should start the interviewing process for coaches right now. Manusky does a great job with the defense, but if you’re on the field 60 to 70 percent of the time I don’t care how good you are, you’re gonna get scored on by at least 3 points! Good play calls by Mike Johnson, bad execution by Alex Smith. He stares down the receivers he’s gonna throw it to. He’s very inaccurate as alot of you know. Last but not least, he makes bad decisions with the football as well. I say start either David Carr or Troy Smith and watch how things start to change. The strip ball caused us the victory, but you have to look at the mistakes before that as well. Thats my take on the situation 49er Faithfuls, keep holding it down.

Why other teams like Arizona ,Carolina, Oakland, Philly, Buffalo, has benched their Starting QB. what in the world that Singletary is waiting for, to get fire!!

This is guy is not good to be a Head Coach. He can be a good LB Coach only.

will the Yorks ever get it?We’re tired of supporting a losing team!Make the next coach a proven one , not another experiment , It makes me sick , we have the game in a bag , look it the Rams they appear to game plan.We just seem to go into a game thinking because we’re the favorites teams will roll over.Well we’re 0-4 so noone sat back and let us win. This team is so unprepared we would have trouble beating a varsity team.Looking at our remaining schedule we’ll be lucky to win 6 games.Any fan that has faith is the reason why the Yorks don’t care , cause we’ll continue to buy tickets , the fans need to not enter candlestick park until start of second quarter next sunday night!

A lot of good things today. The defense looked pretty good except for that stripped ball after the interception by Clemmons. The offensive game plan was a breath of fresh air, I love it. As for Alex Smith, maybe “He Is What He Is.” What about letting Mike Johnson decide on the quarterback situatuion after working with what we have, including Nate Davis. Singletary had better swallow his pride on the QB situation, you can see how we, the fans feel.

WE THE NINER FANS HAS BEEN WAITING FOR GODD RESULT THIS SEASON, BUT IT SEEMS TO ME THEY ARE GOING BACKWARD. THEY NEED TO GET RID OF ALEX SMITH. HE IS NOT A GOOD CALIBER QB. IT’S BEEN 5 YEARS SINCE THEY DRAFTED ALEX SMITH BUT THERE ARE NO GOOD IMPROVEMENT. LOOK AT AARON ROGERS, HE’S BEEN DOING GOOD AND HE CAN TAKE HIS TEAM TO THE PLAYOFF OR MAYBE SUPERBOWL.

IF SINGLETARY WILL KEEP ALEX SMITH AS THE STARTING QB, LET”S BOYCOTT THE NINERS GAME. WE ARE JUST WASTING OUR MONEY TO WATCH THEM. REMEMBER THE FANS ARE THE ONE PAYING THEIR SALARY.

  360. By realistic fan 49 on Oct 3, 2010 | Reply

I like Lillians quote above, “Once again the niners snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!!! That, Coach Sing is not a good thing, so stop clapping when other teams excell and stop thanking other coaches for whippin out behinds.

“They sit on it, and the game is over,” Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez said.
Clements made the leaping grab at the Falcons’ 49. He tore up the left sideline with linebacker Ahmad Brooks as a lead blocker.
“I am sure he thought he was going to score,” Niners coach Mike Singletary said. “That is all there is to it.”
“He was carrying it like a loaf of bread, and Roddy got it out,” Falcons receiver Harry Douglas said.
“We have to grow up real fast,” Singletary said. “I thought this would be the week, but obviously that did not happen, which makes things very difficult for the entire organization.”

  362. By realfaned on Oct 3, 2010 | Reply

Point blank truth Mike Singletary will be next the one gone because he can’t be a man and fire Alex Smith. The Idiot QB scored one TD on opening drive,in his interview who can see that he thinks he played a good game.I’m going to say this every week win or lose get rid of Alex Smith watch Carr lose 3 games then please get Davis out of practice squad and on the field.Let are draft pick play for 2 seasons and lets see where we are at, its ok if we lose with him the fans can deal with that but we are tired of watching Alex Smith throw interceptions and then saying yea that Alex is coming around.

  363. By JimD on Oct 3, 2010 | Reply

Sing doesnt cause fumbles and stripped balls. We lost games to the Saints and the Falcons because of those very mistakes at very critical points in the game. We are going in the right direction with Mike Johnson calling plays. I just wish our team could fix their ball control problems. Its really annoying

  364. By Jay on Oct 4, 2010 | Reply

That was one close game it was like that new orleans game, the field goal had it clinced for the Falcons. Damn! If only Nate had ran out of bounds we would of won. But no hes so selfish, that he would go for the endzone and cost the team on that interception. I was seeing some good stuff in preson they played smart, why are we playing like back from 04-05 season, the worst one. Thankfully we have a bye after the eagles game and its home, but it will be tough against the new revamped Vick. Please beat the Eagles niners, I still have faith on you guys, its ok your on the road we understand, but please win some road games and home games.

I say hire a high school quarterback instead of Alex Smith, Garcia was waaaay better.

  366. By Olli Germany on Oct 4, 2010 | Reply

    this is unbelievable!!!!
Losing the game because of some very bad decisions. Who decided to throw the ball short to the half in field goal range??? Run down the clock and take the FG! Nate is a very good corner but you should tell him that the team is more important than his statistics . . . .go out of bounds and the game is over . . . . .don’t want to talk about some dopey penalties . . . .

  367. By Lara on Oct 4, 2010 | Reply

Maybe they should hire Joe montanas Kid he plays very good better than wat we got. Or joe should be the quarterback coach for the 9ers?

  368. By lex1979 on Oct 4, 2010 | Reply

I’m dissappointed in this team. They have quality talent but they are losing games that they should win. I don’t think Alex Smith is going to work out, they need a new QB…and while I do like his fire, I think Mike Singeltary isn’t the man for the job either. I like Davis, Gore , Crabtree and ofcourse Willis. They have guys that can make plays….I don’t know whats wrong with this team…

  369. By ALi saheb on Oct 4, 2010 | Reply

once again A SMITH SUCKS. Why is he crying about the crowd noise. you dont hear tom brady and payton manning even bringing crowd noise up…..when will this team get it…dump smith…..is SIng doesnt do it then he should be gone tooo. we need some smarts on this team

mod: I know ur reading this… why do you not post my comment addressing Smith’s demeanor during the post game press conference saying that he’s lost all confidence in himself and that he appears like a man who know he’s lost his starting job? Tell me, what is wrong with this comment? Am I degrading or insulting the man? Surely not! Am I speaking profanity? I don’t think so.

Well stop deleting my comments because all I’m doing is stating the obvious.

SMITH IS DONE AS A 49ER. I GUARANTEE IT. If the NINER COACHING STAFF HAS THE AUDACITY TO START SMITH in next week’s home game vs. the Eagles, I GUARANTEE CANDLESTICK PARK WILL BOOOOOOOO HIM until he leaves the stadium!!!

they need to bench smith…bring in carr and rotate our backs w/westbrook & dixion…carr never had a good line to protect him in houston…lets see wht he can do with the guys we have now…at least he will run the ball…he just mite bring back that fire that he once had at fresno state….i think he is due to take over the roll as the niner QB..

oh by the way yes announcements, new coach lombardi, and I think our new qb is tom brady, we got him for a 6th round pick in the 2015 draft.

  374. By z9ers on Oct 4, 2010 | Reply

Have you ever thought that maybe, just maybe, alex smith is the best qb on the team. I mean all of you people are saying bench alex, and if sing doesnt then he should be fired. Think about what you are saying. If there was a better qb he would be playing. Or maybe sing and alex have a pack to go 0-16 so they can each loose your jobs. you so called fans crack me up

  375. By Jose on Oct 4, 2010 | Reply

z9er I’m tired to see smith looking like his not even trying and he is but he has happy feet like Jim Evert of the Rams. He does not trust his players or himself. He is scared to throw the ball since his going to throw it high and be picked. This is not his system ( I thought that after 5 years we would know. Maybe he is the best QB we have but if we put in Carr and we still lose hey we know we have to pick a QB next year since with Smith we will have the number one pick. Does anyone know that we are the 2nd worse team in the NFL? I love my 49ers and I will always be a 49er, But its over, Even if we make the Playoffs because of our weak division, We not have what it takes to win it all. WE NEED A QB. HEY SMITH DO WHAT MIKE DID AND QUIT!

  376. By Top Niner on Oct 4, 2010 | Reply

Niner faithful lets calm down and think about the whole situation for a second. We had the hardest first quarter schedule within our division. Did you know the same NFL expert that predicted us to win the division also expected us to be 1-3? We are 0-4 not a big diff. The next 2 gms are home and 3rd gm away at Carolina. We do have a chance still for NFC West crown especially given our divisional opponents schedule (Look at their upcoming opponents).

  377. By Top Niner on Oct 4, 2010 | Reply

Alex Smith yes Alex Smith. He has received chance after chance….. and still making very DUMB decesions – – Unfortuanley, his chances of becoming a superstar QB or taking this proud Franchise to SB (No. 1 Goal right?) are VERY SLIM. He is a bests a decent back up. After 6 yrs, he is not showing leadership, discipline in the pocket, has less-avg accuracy, and is still making poor decesions. DID YOU GUYS REALIZE IF HE HAD NOT THROWN THE BALL FOR INTTL GROUNDING WE WOULD HAD POSSIBLY SCORED A FG? Hmmmmm. But with all that said, he is the current best QB on our roster and that is the ONLY reason hs is still starting. My 2 cents – – – if he does not win next game AT HOME than lets take a chance on Nate Davis (D Carr and T Smith are actually what Alex Smith might be 3 yrs later). Sorry Alex but results do matter and your results have been very ugly. GO NINERS!!!!!

Well vick got hurt hes out. So realy wat now they need to put CARR in for the eagles game. We dont have a chance.

I watched Sing at the Press Conference this morning and he is still pumping the “Alex is our guy” crap. I don’t get it. He acts like everything is OK with this team. Is he blind? Take those shades off during the game Mike and see whats happening. Your team is 0 and 4.He does not have this team prepared to hang on to a win when it is in his hands. Did he not see his defense give up a game winning drive after “brain dead” fumbled the ball? How much patience does he expect with Smith. (6 years and I haven’t seen a whole lot of progress). If we cant beat the Eagles at home without Vick and their best running back that will tell a huge story. A GREAT TEAM IS LIKE A GREAT MEAL. YOU NEED THE BEST INGREDIENTS, A GOOD COOK, AND A GOOD RECIPE. SOMETHING IS MISSING WITH THIS TEAM.

  382. By ryan49ers on Oct 4, 2010 | Reply

if the 49ers are going turn this round win games mike singletary needs think about benching alex smith and go with david carr for qb
others teams have done it to, the niners can beat eagles on sunday night
football michael vick will be out for while with injury and eagles qb kevin kolb back as starter lets pick him and sack him six times out of six times and least win game at least the niners made right move by putting rookie safety taylor mays as starter is right idea he is the next
taylor ronnie lott mays lets goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooniners

When Alex wins over the Eagels next week, I;m saying this now instead of after he wins, who cares get rid of him please. All the fans get is more false hope, and the torcher of hearing Alex Smith and Analise say how they feel Alex is now coming along. Don’t prolong cuting him do it now, forever, not even as a back up, because that means we might have to see him again.Bring me in and I will cut him for you, this is not a joke I will do this for the organization.
