We arrived at the Georgia Dome which features a unique press box. It features a spiral staircase in the center and is not enclosed from the stands. That should make for a rather loud atmosphere!
This is also the first game for offensive coordinator Mike Johnson in his new role. You can read our story on Johnson from this week and watch his first press conference.
Some of the players will also be wearing pink gloves and shoes during today’s game for breast cancer awareness. A photo of one of the pairs of gloves is below.
Stay tuned for the inactives and our Teddy Football podcast.

The 49ers kicked off to Eric Weems who returned it out to the 30-yard line. The Falcons quickly moved the chains as Ryan dumped it off to Turner on 1st down and then found Finneran on a comeback just shy of midfield. On 3rd and 4, Goldson made a great play, timing his hit on Harry Douglas perfectly. Ryan would have had the first down on the slant pass, but Goldson broke it up and forced the punt. Kyle Williams called for a fair catch at the 12.
On 3rd and 1, Alex Smith took the snap from the shotgun and hit Michael Crabtree on a quick slant for a gain of 14. The 49ers had another 3rd and 1 situation and Mike Johnson dialed up a play action pass. Smith threw deep for Delanie Walker who drew a pass interference penalty, giving the 49ers a first down at the 22. The 49ers couldn’t convert on the next 3rd down as Smith hit Frank Gore on a screen pass. The play was well executed as David Baas and Chilo Rachal made key blocks, but the ball was marked just an inch shy. Smith dove forward on the QB sneak and the officials had to measure. Smith got just enough on the play to get the 1st down. Smith hit Vernon Davis on a screen to the right side and was ruled down at the 1. Singletary challenged the call and from the replays it looked like Davis was never down as he reached the ball over the goal line. The call was reversed, touchdown 49ers! That was the 49ers first touchdown on an opening drive since 12/28/08. Ted Robinson talked about getting off to a fast start in this week’s edition of Teddy Football. Smith put together a nice drive, completing all six of his passes.
49ers 7 – Falcons 0
The Falcons were called for holding on the kickoff and were backed up to the 8. On 3rd and 7, the 49ers pressured Ryan and forced a high throw to Douglas. The punt was blocked by Zeigler. The ball popped high in the air and was caught by Taylor Mays, who barely got both toes in for the touchdown! It was the 49ers first blocked punt for a touchdown since 1987.
49ers 14 – Falcons 0
Weems returned the kickoff out to the 29. Ryan was sacked by Parys Haralson for a 5-yard loss on 1st down. Ryan hit Turner who was able to avoid Nate Clements for a gain of 13 on 2nd down. Jason Snelling plunged straight ahead to move the chains on 3rd down. Ryan took a hit as he threw but found Roddy White for a gain of 20, down to the SF 36. The quarter comes to a close as the Falcons have a 2nd and 1 from th 15.
Standout Stat: Alex Smith was 6 of 6 for 43 yards and a touchdown on the opening drive.
Highlight Reel: Zeigler’s blocked punt was definitely the play of the quarter. Mays showed good awareness to stay in bounds and grab the ball for the score.
Put it in Perspective: With the Falcons threatening, the 49ers will try to force the field goal. The 49ers got off to a fast start, but a 14 point lead isn’t safe against an explosive Falcons team. The defense has been on the field for quite a while so the offense will need to get momentum once again on their next drive.
On 3rd and 5, Ryan found Douglas on the right sideline all alone and Douglas was able to get in for the score.
49ers 14 – Falcons 7
Kyle Williams was stopped at the 14-yard line on the kick return. Smith rolled out and hit Josh Morgan crossing and picked up the first down. The 49ers spread the field on 2nd down. The Falcons brought pressure and Smith was sacked by Curtis Lofton. Smith pitched the ball to Gore who got out to the 26, but was still well short of the sticks. Weems broke a tackle on the punt return and got into 49ers territory.
Turner picked up 10 yards on the first play as he got around the right tackle. Tuner got the carry on the next play as well and had lots of running room right up the middle for a gain of 9 yards. Ryan hit Tony Gonzalez on a quick slant for another first down on the drive and the Falcons are in the red zone. Ryan threw for Gonzalez, but Spikes was able to tip the ball and Shawntae Spencer was in the right spot to pick it off. The 49ers got the ball at their own 6. That’s the first time Spencer has had interceptions in back to back games during his 7-year career.
Gore picked up 13 on first down as he bounced the run out to the left. Smith hit Crabtree on a comeback to the left side. Crabtree lowered his shoulder into Robinson for a gain of 15. Smith hit Walker on a screen. Walker got a good block by Crabtree for a gain of 6. On 3rd and 4 from the 40, Smith tried to hit Morgan who slipped as he cut to the sideline. Weems fielded the punt around the 5 and returned it to the 17.
Bowman got into the backfield on the first play of the drive to bring down Turner for a loss of 2. Ryan scrambled up the middle and was stopped for a gain of 1 by Franklin. Ryan hit Douglas on the cross, but the ball was knocked loose by Tarell Brown. The punt rolled out of bounds at the 31.
Smith hit Crabtree on a comeback for a gain of 13 on the first play of the drive. Gore gained 3 up the middle on the next play and the clock stopped for the two minute warning. The Falcons blitzed and Smith hit Gore in open space for a gain of 19 – good block by Rachal on the play. Smith was pressured and tried to hit Gore, but the pass was high and tipped off Gore’s hands, right to Curtis Lofton.
The Falcons got the ball at their own 33 and had all three timeouts remaining. Ryan had a free play as Brooks jumped early and hit Douglas crossing for a 44-yard gain down to the 19. Ryan scrambled and got out of bounds at the 10. There is still 41 seconds left in the quarter. On 3rd and 1, Franklin stopped Mughelli just short of the first down. Atlanta went for it on 4th and inches. Ryan picked up the first down on a QB sneak. Ryan was pressured and tossed the ball to one of the offensive lineman. The Falcons were called for illegal touching and intentional grounding. They were penalized 10 yards. Ryan took a shot for Roddy White in the end zone, but Spencer had perfect coverage. Matt Bryant’s 37-yard field goal was good and that ended the half.
49ers 14 – Falcons 10
Standout Stat: The 49ers held the Falcons to 10 points on three trips to the red zone. Spencer’s pick stopped one drive and the 49ers ended the half well, by holding the Falcons to a field goal.
Highlight Reel: The screen pass to Gore was well executed. Rachal got down the field to make a nice block to spring him for a gain of 19.
Put it in Perspective: The first quarter was dominated by the 49ers early on. They got out to a 14 point lead thanks to an opening drive touchdown and a blocked punt which Mays recovered for the score. The Falcons came back in the second quarter though. The interception on the 49ers last drive really hurt the 49ers as they could have at least picked up 3 points to end the half. The defense was resilient however, holding the Falcons to 3. The 49ers will get the ball to start the second half. It’ll be important to re-establish their early momentum.
Williams took a knee on the kick for a touchback. On 3rd and 2, Smith looked for Gore on a quick slant. The pass was incomplete but the Falcons were flagged for interference. On 3rd and 5, Gore got the carry on the draw and picked up 6 yards up the middle. Gore got the carry on the draw on 3rd and 6 and again picked up enough for the first down. Smith was looking for Josh Morgan, but threw the ball right to William Moore. The interception gave the Falcons the ball at the 46.
Turner got around the left side of the line and had all kinds of running room, gaining 27 down to the 27. Haralson was flagged for a personal foul for pushing Tyson Clabo after the play. On 3rd down, the secondary had good coverage and gave Travis LaBoy enough time to get to Ryan for the sack. Bryant’s 31-yard field goal was good.
49ers 14 – Falcons 13
The 49ers started their next drive at the 20 after the touchback. The 49ers couldn’t get anything going and went three and out. Lee’s punt was downed at the 27.
On 3rd down, Ryan’s pass was behind Gonzalez as the 49ers defence forced the three and out. Williams called for the fair catch at the 26.
Gore got the toss left on first down and picked up 4. Smith stepped up and hit Crabtree on second down after he found a hole in the zone. The draw play continues to work well for the 49ers as Gore picked up 7 up the middle on 2nd down. Smith’s pass on third down for Morgan was batted down incomplete. Weems signaled for the fair catch at the 12.
Manny Lawson jumped early as Turner got the carry up the middle. That was the last play of the quarter.
Standout Stat: The Falcons have converted just 2 of 10 third downs.
Highlight Reel: Travis LaBoy brought down Matt Ryan on 3rd down to force the field goal.
Put it in Perspective: The 49ers offense has not scored since the first drive. They need to string together a couple solid drives in the fourth quarter. A one point lead against the Falcons is not safe.
Ryan hit Roddy White out to the 39. Snelling got the carry on the next play and had good room to run and picked up 8 up the middle. Snelling carried it once again and picked up the first down out past midfield. Nate Clements made a great play on first down, flying in to trip up Turner for a loss of 6. On 3rd and 7, Ryan hit Snelling over the middle, but Clements was right there to bring him down for a short gain and force the punt. Williams called for the fair catch at the 8.
Smith’s pass to Crabtree down the right sideline was too high and incomplete. Gore was stopped for no gain on 2nd down. Smith checked down to Gore over the middle and Gore was able to break a tackle to get the first down. The Falcons came with pressure on 2nd down and batted Smith’s pass at the line. Smith stepped up and hit Morgan on a comeback to the left side of the field, gaining 10 yards and a first down. On 3rd and 1, Anthony Dixon got the carry and broke a tackle to move the chains. Smith hit Davis on a screen to the left side. Davis hit full speed and picked up 15 yards down to the ATL 40. Smith was called for intentional grounding on 3rd down which will back the 49ers out of field goal range.
