Niner Noise Members Win Gold

Posted by Sam Good on August 27, 2010 – 3:57 PM

The 49ers would like to give a special congratulations to the Concord Blue Devils, who recently won the International Drum and Bugle Corps Championships for the second year in a row.

Blue Devils Director David Gibbs also helps produce Niner Noise, and many of the Niner Noise drummers come out of the Blue Devils program.

“It takes an extraordinary effort to win the world championships, and to do it two years in a row is amazing,” Gibbs said. “Everybody put in a tremendous amount of time, and to have it pay off like that is great.”

At the competition, the Blue Devils performed “Through a Glass, Darkly.” Gibbs said he wasn’t sure the 1950s-era jazz song would transition well to the football field, but he was glad when it ended up being very well received.

There are more than 150 people on the Blue Devils squad, and Gibbs said 14 of them are members of Niner Noise as well.

Every year there are about 25 drummers on Niner Noise, and 16 of them play at each home game.

“We love working with a first-class organization like the 49ers,” Gibbs said. “I think our favorite part is going through the parking lot while people are tailgating and meeting the fans.

“We always look to bring new excitement to our Niner Noise performances, whether it’s using garbage cans or new drums, we just want to energize the fans at Candlestick Park.”

Here are several pictures of Blue Devils drummers from a recent competition.

I’m on the opposite coast, root for other football teams and other corps than the Niners and Blue Devils, but I’m so glad to see the NFL franchise take the time to recognize the musical and marching excellence that is affiliated with them.
