FIRST QUARTER:

Bobby Guillory got the 49ers good field position on the kickoff out to the 30.  1st and 10, Anthony Dixon gets the start at RB and plunges straight ahead for a gain of 2.  2nd and 8, Smith hit Dixon out of the backfield.  Dixon didn’t have much room, but was still able to pick up 6 and give the 49ers a 3rd and short.  3rd and 2, Smith took the snap in the shotgun and hit Ted Ginn on a comeback round beyond the first down marker.  1st and 10 from the 43, Dixon was barely tripped up by E.J. Henderson in the backfield and gained only 1.  2nd and 9, Dixon got the carry once again and bounced out to the right side fir a gain of 5.  Henderson was again in on the stop.  3rd and 4, Smith stepped up in the pocket as the pressure came around him.  Smith could’ve run, but dumped it to Zeigler for a gain of 13.  1st and 10, Dixon couldn’t find any running room as the Vikings collapsed the middle of the line.  No gain on the play.  2nd and 10, Smith stepped up in the pocket and hit Walker cutting from right to left.  Walker made the first man miss and picked up 24 yards down to the 14.  1st and 10, Dixon was met at the line of scrimmage as he tried to get outside.  he was stopped for a loss on 1.  2nd and 11, Smith tried to Walker along the left side of the end zone.  The Vikings had good coverage on the play and the pass sailed high.  3rd and 11, Smith hit Walker in between tight coverage.  The spot looks to be just short and the officials will measure.  The 49ers got the first down by just a couple of inches.  1st and goal from the 4, Smith pitched to Dixon who followed a nice block by Ginn and dove in for the score.  Nedney’s extra point is good.  Great way for the 49ers to start the game, driving 70 yards to take the early lead against a good defense.

49ers 7 – Vikings 0

Darius Reynaud nearly broke the kickoff, but was held up at the 30.  A chorus of boos rain down as Brett Favre takes the field.  1st and 10, Favre hits Peterson on a swing route.  He’s brought down by Spikes and Willis after a gain of 13.  1st and 10, Peterson is met in the backfield by Lawson and jean Francois for a loss of 3.  2nd and 13, the 49ers sent both middle linebackers on the blitz.  Willis and Spikes dropped Favre for a loss of 10.  3rd and 23, the Vikings play it safe with the draw play, giving it to Young for a gain of 9.  After the punt, the 49ers will begin their next drive from the 15.

1st and 10 from the 15, not much room for Dixon as he’s stood up by Chad Greenway after a gain of 2.  2nd and 8, Anthony Davis was called for the false start.  2nd and 13, Dixon was stopped for a loss of 2.  3rd and 15, Smith hands off to Dixon who picks up 9.  Three straight running plays and the 49ers go 3 and out on their second drive.  After a 53-yard punt, the Vikings will start from the 28-yard line.

Favre’s night looks to be a short one as he is replaced by Tavaris Jackson.  1st and 10, Peterson didn’t have much room to run but dove forward to pick up 3.  2nd and 7, Peterson broke two tackles as he bounced out to the left side for a gain of 13.  1st and 10, Peterson was stopped by Justin Smith after a gain of 3.  2nd and 7, Jackson hit Peterson over the middle for 4 yards as Willis tracked him down.  3rd and 3, Jackson got the snap off just before a delay of game.  Jackson hit Logan Payne in traffic.  Lewis and Clements leveled him, but Payne held on for the first down.

SECOND QUARTER:

49ers 7 – Vikings 3

Another good kick return by Bobby Guillory, nearly breaking another one as he got out to the 36.  1st and 10, Walker got the handoff, but the Vikings kept good containment and dropped him for a loss of 1.  2nd and 11, Smith took the snap out of the shotgun as the Vikings showed blitz.  Smith hit Byham on the right sideline for a gain of 4.  3rd and 7, Smith hit Zeigler crossing.  Zeigler immediately turned up field and dove for the first down.  1st and 10, Minnesota got good pressure, but Smith stepped up and hit an open Delanie Walker who dropped a shoulder and picked up the first down.  1st and 10 from the MIN 43, Smith must not have liked what he saw and called timeout.  1st and 10, Dixon got the carry, but slipped as he tried to turn the corner and lost 2.  2nd and 12, Smith couldn’t find an open man and threw it away as he was flushed from the pocket.  3rd and 12, the Vikings came on a delayed blitz, and Smith could only throw it away before taking a sack.  Lee’s punt rolled out at the 7, but an illegal man downfield will back the 49ers up 5 yards and they’ll have to kick again.  Lee dropped in another good punt as it was downed at the 8.  So after all of that, the Vikings net one yard as a result of the penalty on the punt.

1st and 10 for the Vikings from the 8, Jean Francois was called for encroachment.  1st and 5, Stanford’s Toby Gerhart gets his first carry and picks up 3.  2nd and 2, Jackson’s pass falls incomplete intended for Biddle.  3rd and 2, Wilhelm made a great play tipping the ball intended for D’imperio in the flat.  Guillory muffed the punt, but was able to recover and keep possession.

1st and 10 for the 49ers from the 32, Dixon mad a few cuts up the middle, but picked up only 2.  2nd and 8, Smith stepped up and threw for Ginn, but the pass was high and off his fingers.  3rd and 8, Smith escaped the pocket and checked it down to Dixon for a gain of 6.  Asher Allen returned the punt for the Vikings and got out to the 21.

1st and 10, the screen pass for Gerhart was sniffed out by Khalif Mitchell and broken up.  2nd and 10, Jackson hit Biddle on the right sideline.  Tarell Brown was right there and threw him to the ground after a gain of 6.  3rd and 4, Mitchell nearly had the sack, but Jackson escaped and scrambled for the first down.  1st and 10, Mitchell came with the pressure again and brought Jackson down as he threw it away.  The Vikings were called for holding on the play and will back up 10 yards.  1st and 20, Jackson set up the screen to Gerhart for a gain of 7.  2nd and 13, Bowman flew up the middle, but Jackson got the ball out to Gerhart to pick up 4.  TWO MINUTE WARNING  3rd and 9, Jackson threw incomplete for Biddle on the left sideline.  Karl Paymah was called for PI and the Vikings get the first down.  1st and 10 from the 49, Young got the carry up the middle and gained 2.  2nd and 8, LaBoy and Briggs met at the quarterback and dropped Jackson for a loss of 9.  3rd and 17, Gerhart took the carry straight up the middle for a gain of 7.  The 49ers called timeout to stop the clock with 25 seconds left in the half.  The Vikings were called for illegal formation.  The punt rolled into the end zone so the 49ers will get the ball at the 25.

1st and 10, Smith hands to Dixon out of the shotgun and that will do it for the first half.

THIRD QUARTER:

The Vikings were called for holding on the kickoff and begin the drive from the 27.  1st and 10, Wilhem stops Gerhart behind the line for a loss of 1.  2nd and 11, Rosenfels is now in at QB and threw incomplete for Dugan as Mays and Bowman had good coverage.  3rd and 11, Bowman hit Rosenfels as he threw and Adams broke up the pass.  Guillory takes the punt and didn’t have much success bouncing it out to the right side.

Nate Davis is now in at QB.  1st and 10, Nate Davis is dropped by Brian Robinson for a loss of 11.  2nd and 21 from the 31, Davis threw incomplete for Dixon on the screen.  3rd and 21, Davis threw behind Ginn.  If the pass was on target, they might have converted the 3rd and long.  Raynaud returned the punt back to the 39.  Zeigler was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and the Vikings will gain an extra 15 yards.

1st and 10, Rosonfels threw for Dugan, who couldn’t hold on to the ball.  2nd and 10, Gerhart was met in the backfield by Tukuafu for no gain.  3rd and 10, Rosenfels hit Reynaud for a gain of 4 and the defense does well to force the three and out.  Guillory signaled for the fair catch on his own three yard line.

1st and 10 from the 3, Dixon plunged ahead for a gain of 2.  2nd and 8, Davis hit Byham on a comeback over the middle for a gain of 6.  3rd and 2, Davis play faked and launched the ball roughly 65 yard in the air to Ginn.  It’s a huge play as the 49ers move down to the MIN 29.  1st and 10, Dixon gets the carry and finds some daylight up the middle for a gain of 7.  2nd and 3, Dixon got another carry, but couldn’t get much room and picked up 2.  3rd and 1, Dixon slipped a tackle at the line of scrimmage and got enough for the first down.  1st and 10 from the 16, Davis calls timeout as the 49ers ran out of time getting lined up.  1st and 10, Dixon followed a nice blog by Alex Boone around the left edge to gain 6.  2nd and 4, there was some miscommunication as Davis’ pass was intended for Ginn who broke his route off short.  Davis’ pass was in the back of the end zone.  3rd and 4, Davis couldn’t find an open man and the pass went out of the end zone.  Nedney connects on the 28-yard field goal to put the 49ers up by 7.

49ers 10 – Vikings 3

The Vikings will begin their next drive from the 25.  1st and 10, Phillip Adams made a nice play to break up the pass intended for Brown.  2nd and 10, Rosenfels hits Biddle on the right sideline for a gain of 7.  3rd and 3, Rosenfels’ pass is behind Small and the 49ers get the 3 and out.  Guillory fields the punt and after a penalty on the 49ers, they’ll begin their next drive from the 16.

1st and 10 from the 16, Davis hit Dixon out of the backfield, but the play was read well and Dixon will lose four yards.  2nd and 14, Davis hit Byham over the middle for a gain of 18.  1st and 10, Davis hit Caulcrick out of the backfield as he picked up 6 down the left sideline.  2nd and 4, Dixon got the carry and bounced it out left for a gain of 4.  1st and 1o, Davis tucked the ball and escaped the pocket.  he made the first man miss and slid for a gain of 11.  1st and 10, Davis calls timeout prior to the play.  1st and 10, Davis hit Caulcrick out of the backfield for a gain of 15 down the left side.  1st and 10 from the 34, Davis threw for Byham on the seam.  Byham was hit hard and couldn’t hold on.  The rookie tight end was shaken up, but was able to stand up and walk off on his own.  2nd and 10, Davis hit Zeigler on the slant for a nice gain of 13.  1st and 10 from the 21, Dixon picked up 3 on the carry and that will be the last play of the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER:

2nd and 7 from the 18, Dixon moves the pile as he runs straight ahead for a gain of 4.  3rd and 3, the 49ers were called for holding and the Vikings returned what was ruled on the field as a fumble for the score.  Judging by the replays, this will be overturned after Singletary’s challenge.  The play was reversed and Nedney will get a chance at the 31-yard field goal.  It’s good the 49ers tack on 3 more.

49ers 13 – Vikings 3

The Vikings will start their drive from the 30.  1st and 10, Joe Webb comes in at QB and hands to Reynaud and gains 2.  2nd and 8, Reynaud is met at the line of scrimmage and loses 1 yard on the play.  3rd and 9, Webb throws to Small on the rollout and picks up the first down.  1st and 10 from the 43, Webb escapes some pressure and stretches to pick up 2.  2nd and 8, Webb hits Hamilton for a gain of 6.  3rd and 2, Briggs pressured Webb who rolled out of the pocket and threw it away.  Guillory lets this punt bounce and it rolls into the end zone.

1st and 10, Robinson got the carry for no gain.  2nd and 10, Davis threw low for Robinson out of the backfield.  3rd and 10, Davis’ pass skipped low for Hill as he was under pressure.  Kristick makes the stop on the punt and the Vikings take over at the 36.

1st and 10, Webb tries to hit the back out of the backfield, but Kristick was right there to break up the play.  2nd and 10, Webb was under pressure and scrambled for 3 yards.  3rd and 7, Briggs came off the left edge and sacked Webb for a loss of 8.  Guillory returns the punt out to the 20.

Davis remains in the game.  1st and 10 from the 20, Robinson got the carry up the left side and lowered the shoulder to pick up 6.  2nd and 4, Davis tried to hit Zeigler on a slant but was off target.  3rd and 4, Davis rollowed out of the pocket and probably could have run for the first.  He took a shot deep to Hill, but the pass was broken up.  Reynaud returns the punt out to the 34.

We have to run down to the field, but check us out on Twitter for more updates.

Here’s some postgame reaction from the locker room.  We’ll have more videos coming up on 49ers.com!

I’ll give Alex a chance because the line hasn’t been good in the pass, but if he screws up this year I’m rooting for Nate Davis to QB. He hasn’t had a chance at all and he is a great QB. David Carr had his chance too I think its time to let Nate show what he has to offer to the Faithful.

All the Smith haters are quiet tonite. Is that because he showed what he could do tonite without his three best weapons? And againest one of the best defences in the league. I think all the true 9er fans out there need to show the young man some love and support. Go niners good two preseason wins.

Rock on….How about Nate Davis. Half of his passes were dropped by Ginn, Dixon, and Bynam. He looked awesome. How about the comparison to Elway on that bomb to Ginn. Davis is our boy. Smith didn’t do anything but average football tonight, which is what is expected of any starting quarterback. Move Davis to 2nd string that way when Smith starts throwing his interceptions, we have Nate the Great to take his place. Nate Davis is the future of the 49ers. SuperBowl or bust for 2010.

If Smith Matches Brees touchdown for touchdown and throws no pics Then I will start believing the rumors that he is getting better. Not a hater I just seen to many sensless pics thrown In his carrer to believe that he can make It In the NFL. His leadership seems to be weak possibly due to not having an O line . we will see I hope he does good ! F R I S C O !

Aside from the first drive, Smith was garbage. Nate Davis led them to two scoring drives off the bat (albeit FGS) and made plays with his feet. I’ll bet you defenses love it when Smith plays. no threat of a throw behind the defense. A lot of the first drive was runs, after that either the play calling shifted from runs to passes or the defense took them away…what did Alex Smith do???

With Davis, on pass plays, someone has to stay back cause he could make plays with his feet and then launch a bomb, Smith can’t do that.

If you think the Niners could win playoff games with Smith you are mistaken. Nate Davis should start based on his footwork alone. His footwork alone allows him to make NFL throws. Alex Smith floats the ball. He is not an NFL QB.

good game for a pre-season for the 49ers! It was even better seeing nate davis going deep to Ted Ginn. Big ups to Nate!! Good job Alex Smith. WAY TO KILL BRETT FARVE Takeo and P. Willis!! a Sick combination.

Alex Smith showed some good poise out their today…not bad. Defense with a little slap in da face on Farve..way to go D!….The play of the day goes to my boy Nate D for throwing that 65yard BOMB!!!!…to the GIN MAN (BOUT TIME HE CAUGHT A PASS) happen to be the biggest one yet!…Nate still showing some great promise for sure……Oh! digging that LABOY cat also. As the season nears lets just hope our Niners will be primed and ready. Oh yeah NinerNation Silver and Black next week….should B fun messing with those idiots over their…I just may show up in my RED&GOLD just to start something…..God knows they always act like idoits when they come to the STICK!!!

Niner Nation in a Class to stomp that A—-!!

Average football??? Alex looked great against arguably the best defencive line in football so did the O-Line stepping up in the pocket and delivering the ball. And I think he only had one three and out and that was largely due to a penalty. He converted several 3rd and longs and all with out Gore, Davis and Crebtree. It will be scary when those guys are back in the mix. GO NINERS

And I will say Davis looked good until he hung Bynum out to dry and started over throwing wide open receivers. And the drops were 50/50 not well placed passes but coming from someone who played WR if you touch it you catch it. Hope Davis keeps getting better cause you always want good back up players so if they do come in there’s no drop off at that position. Nice 65 yarder though. :-)

Niner Nation…All I gotta say is LET’S GO!!! Our “D” is stingy, physical, aggressive, and violent…Our Offense performed well considering playing a Top Rated “D” in the NFL without Gore, Davis, or Crabtree…MAN!!! I can’t wait!!! Smith had receivers drop some balls that Crabtree or Vernon would of caught easily…I gotta say…I love this dude Dixon…No homo…That boy is gonna be something special…Westbrook will be a great 3rd down back…If Gore gets hurt I say we start Dixon and keep Westbrook as a 3rd down back…But no matter what the 49ers decide to do…I can proudly say I will for sure support that decision!!! NINERS FOR LIFE BABY!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way…Byham, Delanie, and “Ziggy” are lookin’ real good…I heard that “Ziggy” get that 3rd reciever slot behind Crabtree and Morgan…Then Ginn as a deep threat and kick returner??? O BOY!!! I love what we got going…I can’t wait til’ Mr. Mays gets to play with the starters…I mean did you see him rock that wideout on the sideline??? The crowd ERUPTED!!! That’s what I’m talkin’ about!!! Knock some heads off Mr. Mays!!! Intimidate those receivers!!! I don’t think ya’ll understand how PUMPED I am right now!!! This season can’t come quick enough…Next VICTIM??? OAKLAND RAIDERS!!!

IVE BEEN SAID FROM DRAFT DAY WHEN NATE DAVIS WAS 1ST ROUND TALENT, BUT FELL TO THE 5TH ROUND BECAUSE THE SCOUTS HATED ON HIM FOR HAVING A LEARING DISABILITY.. THAT HE WAS A BEAST… THE MAN IS A ATHLETE, HES A FOOTBALL PLAYER, HE SHOWCASES LEADERSHIP FROM THE START, YOU CAN TELL HE WANTS TO WIN, AND YOU CAN TELL HE WANTS TO BE GREAT. IF I WHERE COACH, I WOULD START HIM NOW,HES READY TO DO JUST AS GOOD AS ALEX IF NOT BETTER…AND HE WILL DO BETTER, HES FEARLESS AND SHOWS HEART………

Yeah Frisco Fans the Niners look good and we are going to woop some butts up coming season. Alex look decent for once I hope he holds up because when the 3 boyz are starting GORE, CRABTREE, & DAVIS we are gonna be deadly holla out loud at the niners all home games so play offs are in the mix at home. NINERS YO!!!!

I grew up in Muncie and watched Nate Davis play at Ball State. When the time comes, Nate will elevate the niners to the level of Montana and Young…Go NATE!!!!

Heard the post game comments from the coach, agree on comment about QB Davis sliding down before the hash marks, he should have known where the 1st down marker was, but really have to question the 6 straight running plays in the last two possessions, everything went to the heart of the Vikings defense, Dixon showed he can turn the corners, yet not one play called in that direction,
Good luck if this is a example of the run play coming this season. we will see a whole lot more of the three and outs and a defense expected to play 3/4 of a 4 quarter game.
Davis may be inexperienced and raw, but looks more like a natural quarterback, in vision, poise, touch, and ability, then either of the QBs ahead of him.
Looking forward to another frustrating season from a vary talented team, with uncreative play calling, and a quarter back who exemplifies the “deer in the headlights” slogan.

Coach Singletary, his O-coach and his QB coach are all paid to evaluate as well as to coach. Please note the head coach’s comments re: Nate Davis in today’s Chron (or SFGate). “Far from ready to take the controls” is the headLine. Work ethic, mastering the playbpook are key requirements,, according to the coach. Important to me, too, as a fan.

LOVED THE GAME YESTERDAY . WE WHOOPED THE VIKINGS FROM THE OPENING KICKOFF WITH A GOOD KICKOFF FROM BOBBY GUILLORY (VALLEJO,CA) KID WHO IS GOING TO TAKE OVER THE RETURNS . ONCE HE SETTLES IN HE’S GOING TO LOOK LIKE DEVIN HESTER RETURNING KICKS . THE OFFENSE LOOK GREAT WITHOUT OUR MAIN 3 PLAYERS (GORE,CRABTREE,DAVIS) STILL DRIVING DOWN FOR A TOUCHDOWN ON THE OPENING DRIVE . THE DEFENSE LOOK GREAT AS USUAL HITTING BRET FARVE MAKING HIM QUESTION HIS RETURN . NEXT WEEK WE ARE GOING TO WHOOP THE RAIDERS EVEN WORST GIVING THEM A PREVIEW OF HOW WE ARE GOING TO DO THEM IN THE REGULAR SEASON !

This was a fun game to watch. Nice to see them treat Farve that way. I know it is only pre-season, but they did very well without their first string on the field. Lots of potential. Rookies looked great. Alex looked better and is finally stepping into his pocket to throw. Good protection for the most part. I don’t want to get too pumped up because 16 games is a long season. Injuries, play calling, execution etc. I’m hoping for the Div Title for a change. It’s time SF stepped on the necks of Seattle, Arizona and St Lous.

to say some thing. apparently coach sing made Alex the starter cause he believe in him. go Niners#########

I’ll be surprised if Favre makes it to the forth game of the regular season. He’s too old and has had one too many surgeries. What he did last year was remarkable , but considering his age, his injuries and the fact every team the Vikings play will be testing Favre’s ankle when ever they get the chance, the odds will be stacked against him for going injury free for even four games of the regular season.

If we start the season with Nate Davis, then the other QB’s could learn how to make quick decisions and get rid of the ball (like 65 yards downfield to one of our guys)!

  75. By Natetown on Aug 24, 2010 | Reply

Smith and Carr were both repeats of Tim Couch; their careers are almost over (especially Carr’s). If Nate gets more time in preseason and moves ahead of one of them, then he will see the field this year when Smith throws picks. Smith is the thing keeping this team from a playoff run. The defense is set. I want to see Nate sending bombs to Ginn and Crabtree; who are you going to cover. Gore could have a break out year!

I, too am tired of hearing and seeing Farve, but in consideration of late, great players. I never tired of hearing of Montana, Rice and others in thier day. I do not believe it ever got to the point where we tried to get a whole nation to worship any of them as a god! The media needs to focus on the league as a whole, not just one man. Besides, look what Singletary has done with our 49er’s! Nate Davis looked good in Sundays’ game.

I am confused by Coach Sings interpretation of Nate Davis Play last against the Vikings. The guy had to get down before reaching the down marker to keep from getting his head knocked off. This QB is the best QB with raw talent we seen in awhile in SF. They know he has a learning disability but still brings a decent game evetime out. Instead of being critical maybe the QB coach can spend more time with him. Don’t be a fool 49er brainthrust and let this guy go. Put him on waivers and see how fast another team picks him up. The jury is still out on Alex and I am pulling for him but…. And David Carr, why did they pick him up when other OBs were avaiable? Remember P Willis comments after that pickup? Come on Coach, get a grip, and use another type motivating tool for Nate Davis. Don’t chase him away or dampen his confidence. Lets finally go, 49ers. Hamp
