It’s a pad-less afternoon practice for the 49ers on Wednesday. Special teams work is taking place at the moment, interior blocking, punt returning and form tackling by the gunners are all happening across the practice fields.
To start practice, the team is broken up in groups working on ball security drills. Then it switches to form tackling drills. This has been almost an every day occurrence at “Camp Singletary” as Takeo Spikes has dubbed it. The 49ers head coach places a high value in football fundamentals and it’s continued throughout camp.
After sitting out the morning session, outside linebacker Travis LaBoy is taking part in individual drills.
On a side note, Andy Lee is once again sporting his lucky red 49ers hat.
Brian Westbrook is getting the veteran courtesy this afternoon, and is watching practice as we;;. He’ll continue to take mental reps while learning a new playbook for the first time since his rookie season in Philadelphia.
Opening 7-on-7 period, Alex Smith completes first two passes, but third is broken up by rookie linebacker NaVorro Bowman on pass intended for tight end Delanie Walker down the middle.
Carr’s turn in the 7-on-7 period, he opens with touchdown pass to tight end Tony Curtis on perfect throw to Curtis’ back shoulder.
Smith caps red zone team period with quick slant touchdown pass to Josh Morgan. Like Tuesday, the offense will drive up the field to close out the afternoon session. No music being played, yet.
Now it is, it’s the sounds of Hank Williams Jr. – the voice of Monday Night Football’s theme music.
Smith completes first two passes, second to Dominique Zeigler puts the offense on the other side of the 50-yard line. Smith jumps to the line and kills the clock by spiking the ball. After a false start penalty and an incomplete pass intended for Ginn, Smith unable to hit Anthony Dixon on a dump off pass. Appeared to be pass interference, no call. On fourth down, Smith throws high to Ginn and pass is almost picked off by Matt Wilhelm.
Second-team offense is up with Nate Davis under center.
Davis completes first two passes, but misses the mark on next two. It’s third-and-10, Davis throws incomplete, bringing up another fourth down. Davis sails deep ball to Kevin Jurovich missing the rookie wideout by a few yards, ending the second team’s drive.
That appears to be it for practice.
